Lawyer extols Iwuanyanwu, renews calls for Kanu’s release

United Stares based- lawyer and public affairs commentator, Chief Owolabi Salis, has mourned Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

In a tribute, he described the departed Igbo-born industrialist as a great patriot, who  contributed to the development of sports and journalism, through his Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Champion.

Salis, in a statement,  renewed his appeal to President Bola Tinubu to hearken to plea of Ndigboe elders, and  Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for release of  its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The lawyer-politician, who in 2019 contested for Lagos State governor on the platform of Alliance for Democracy and who holds the title of Oyeama Ndigbo Gburugburu of Etiti Mgboko, Abia State said his call was necessary in view of persistent pleas by the  late  Iwuanyanwu, for Kanu’s release, coupled with concern being over his health.

“This is why I am once again calling on the President to grant an amnesty for release of the IPOB leader.”

“The argument that his case was complicated by court procedures doesn’t hold.  If the President is interested in his release, he will be. Kanu, to me, is a freedom fighter and if other freedom fighters are walking free, equity demands he should be too. Yoruba spirituality demands on all true Yoruba people to demonstrate fairness and equity.

‘’And I beg Mr. President to follow the Yoruba spiritual order”. Kanu could be requested to sign an “affidavit of good behaviour” towards ensuring peace in Igboland and Nigeria. I believe he will be willing to do that.

“We are tired of seeing igbo killing one another in igboland. This has gotten out of hand” – Salis lamented.

“We will not like the young man to die in detention,as that might trigger a chain of reactions, the end of which no one can fore-tell,apart from casting a big slur on the democratic and human right credentials of the incumbent government in power”,said the popularly acclaimed social critic.

Citing the Ghana precedent,Salis recalled that the indefinite detention of Dr. J.B. Danquah, the renowned Asante-born prince, lawyer and intellectual,by Nkrumah, leading to his death after about a spell of five years in detention, turned out to be the irreversible nemesis that accelerated the disastrous exit of the great Ghanaian ruler from power, under the volatile agitation of the irrepressible warlike Asante kith and kin of the great Ghanaian Lawyer and intellectual,in a resistance, unprecedented as second to none,in the annals of political opposition in world history.

He stated that Tinubu’s release of Kanu without further delay, will be in keeping with the president’s antecedent as a patriot who along with like-minds struggled valiantly for democratic liberty in Nigeria, during the era of military rulership.  And  his (Tinubu) tenure as governor of Lagos State, through his several litigations against the incumbent federal powers, which went a long way in defining and upholding the rule of law in diverse aspects that were critical to effective operation of a political federation as embodied in the Nigerian experience.

“I am making this plea, not just in my capacity as a titled High Chief of Igboland, but more importantly in accordance with the universal value of justice, equity, and fairness, which are generally accepted canons of modern liberal democracy”, said the Ikorodu-born Lagosian and activist-politician “

‘’I wish to believe that by now,Kanu would have undergone repeated moments of sober reflections, which in turn would have mellowed his fanatical overzealous temper for a matured lease of level headedness, said Salis.

He implored the Igbo to shed every lingering vestige of the Biafran syndrome and rather key into the edifying vision of a united, virile, prosperous and greater Nigerian federation.

While lauding the Igbo for their numerous sterling qualities, which according to him are unique and uncommon,he urged that those qualities are essentially maximized within a larger Nigerian framework, just as he also called on other non-Igbo Nigerians to embrace their Igbo brothers where-ever their paths crossed,he Said, adding that it is by so doing that the ugly specter of the Biafran experience could be said to have been banished. We have to forgive andforget”.

Iwuanyanwu’s death: Ohanaeze debunks leadership tussle speculation

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide says there is no leadership tussle in the group following the recent death of its former President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

Dr Alex Ogbonnia, National Publicity Secretary of the Igbo socio-cultural group, disclosed this on Friday in Enugu, stressing that such speculation by a section of the media was untrue.

“There is no leadership row or tussle in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide at present and there is not likely to be one in the near future,” Ogbonnia said.

He said the group’s National Executive Committee (NEC), comprising erudite scholars, technocrats and veterans of diverse fields, was already seamlessly carrying out the functions of the umbrella body of the organisation.

“This is being done seamlessly on a daily basis by the appropriate structures under the administrative competence of the Secretary General, Amb. Okey Emuchay.

“Iwuanyanwu passed quietly on July 25 and it is very ill-advised and strange for an Igbo to begin to claim the position of the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, even when the burial committee for Iwuanyanwu is yet to be constituted.

“There is a letter in circulation that Dr Jackson Omenazu was nominated or selected to replace late Joel Kroham, who until his death was the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“However, such a letter was not made available to the NEC of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” he said.

Ogbonnia added that it would be insensitive and inconceivable for the NEC to adopt a replacement of Kroham based on a mere letter from Rivers State.

This, he said, was especially so where many of them were very ambivalent and “skeptical about their Igboness”.

He stressed that Omenazu had all the right to pursue his interest as the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo come January, 2025 without bringing Ohanaeze Ndigbo to disrepute. (NAN)

    Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu (1942-2024)

    • An ‘Iroko’ departs in glory

His towering physical stature and presence was a reflection of the monumental and indelible impact that the late Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuayanwu was to make in diverse spheres of Nigeria’s socioeconomic and political landscape in his sojourn of 81 years this side of eternity.

Born on  September 4, 1942, in humble circumstances to the family of Pa Bernard and Madam Hulder Iwuanyanwu of Umuahii Atta in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, Chief Iwuanyanwu died on July 25, 2024, having established himself as a veritable colossus in business, politics, sports, culture and philanthropy, amongst other spheres of life. He was neither born great and neither did he have greatness thrust on his laps on a platter. Rather, he became a man of no mean reckoning both among the Igbo, his kinsmen, and in Nigeria as a whole by dint of clarity of vision, intuitive brilliance, hard work, commitment and determination.

Chief Iwuanyanwu had his elementary education at St Patrick School, Nkpokwu, (later renamed Rukpokwu), Port Harcourt, and the Holy Trinity Primary School, Umuapara, from 1948 to 1954. He attended the New Bethel College, Onitsha, Anambra State, from 1955 to 1959 and, in 1960, he was among a select number of brilliant students to be offered admission into the Federal School of Science, Lagos, where he studied Pure and Applied Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

As a result of his academic brilliance at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), into which he was admitted to study Civil Engineering in 1963, he was awarded the coveted German Academic Exchange Scholarship covering school fees, boarding, feeding and holiday tickets with all costs borne by the Federal Republic of Germany.

Like many other young men in the Southeast at the time, the young Iwuanyanwu’s education at the UNN was disrupted by the Nigerian civil war which broke out in 1967 and ended in 1970. Given his engineering orientation, Iwuanyanwu was drafted into the Biafra Research and Production (R&P) Directorate during the war and served in the Directorate’s Rocket Unit. Working alongside other accomplished scientists such as Professor Gordian Ezekwe, Professor Chukwuka Nwosu and Dr Felix Oragwu, he contributed to producing essential armaments and amenities for Biafra’s war effort at a time when the fledgling republic had limited access to weapons from the outside world.

At the expiration of the war, Iwuanyanwu completed his studies at the UNN and graduated as an engineer in 1971. He was quick to demonstrate his astuteness as an engineer in his places of employment and became a registered engineer of the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) on 12 April, 1972. In the course of his professional career, he successfully experimented on flexible pavement and parameters for concrete, producing a mixed design of asphaltic concrete which was approved by the Federal Ministry of Works for the construction of airport runways and highways in Nigeria.

Combining his professional expertise with an astute business acumen, Iwuanyanwu, in 1976, started a construction company with two Americans, Messrs Harper and Delano. He later acquired the company from his partners and renamed the business Hardel and Eric Construction Company. It is a mark of his versatility and dexterity as a businessman that he grew the business into a conglomerate of over 20 companies spanning advertising, media, insurance, shipping, hotel and hospitality as well as aviation.

He was an active participant in the political transition programmes of the Babangida and Abacha regimes, respectively, being an active member of parties such as the National Republican Convention (NRC) and United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in the two dispensations. After the transition to the fourth republic midwifed by General Abdulsalami Abubakar in 1999, Iwuanyanwu eventually found his natural political habitat in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party with which he remained aligned as a member of its Board of Trustees till his death.

Iwuanyanwu was a member of the National Political Reform Conference in 2005. He served at various times as Chairman, Raw Materials and Research Development Council (RMRDC); among many others.

A household name in sports, he founded the Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club (now Heartland Football Club of Owerri) which excelled in national and international competitions.

He also made his mark as one of the country’s most eminent philanthropists. The Iwuanyanwu Foundation, for example, has reportedly offered scholarships to no less than 10,000 indigent students across the country. Until his death, he was President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze-Ndigbo. Before his ascension to the position in April 2023, he had served the body in several capacities. Iwuanyanwu holds the national honours of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). He was awarded honorary academic degrees by several universities in Nigeria and abroad. In his demise, an ‘Iroko: has departed the Nigerian forest.
