  • My husband says spirits complain about my hair, wife tells court

A 28-year-old businesswoman, Lola Ologuntere on Wednesday urged an Iyana-Ipaja Customary Court to dissolve her two-year-old marriage to Niyi, over alleged fetish lifestyle and incessant complaints on the part of her estranged husband.

The petitioner, who resides in, Ishefun Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, told the court that her husband sprayed perfume into her nostrils while she was pregnant.

“My husband told me that his family complained about my not covering my hair whenever he wants to make love to me.

“Before we got married, my husband was homeless. He used to sleep in a mosque at Oshodi. After we got married, he rented an apartment with no other tenants and electricity.

“I was the only one staying in the whole compound.

“My husband used to spray perfume. I told him I hate perfume odour because of my condition, but he would not heed to my complaints.

“One day, I wanted to sleep in his room but he told me he was having a special prayer and that the spirits in the house were complaining that I did not cover my hair.

“I wanted him to make love to me the following day but he angrily sprayed perfume into my nostrils, pushed me out of the room pulling my hair.

“He always complained that I do not cover my hair. He is a Muslim, while I am a Christian. I am a make-up artist. How will I, advertise my business to my customers when my hair is covered,’’ she said. The petitioner said that her husband is fetish.

“My husband is fetish. When I was in labour I needed to be operated on, my husband said I should leave the hospital and come back home so that he would do a special prayer that would enable me have normal delivery.

“My sister saw a white thread, one black thread, a gourd and a key in one travel bag after I gave birth. I am sure it was my husband that put them there because no one else stays with us.

“Please separate us, let us go our different ways,’’ she begged the court.

Niyi, 40, a contractor, denied being fetish, but admitted that spirits complained to him about his wife’s refusal to cover her hair.

“ I am not fetish. My wife played music whenever I prayed. She disturbed my prayers. From what I was taught, the angelic spirits curse any woman who does not cover her hair.

“I use perfume which I bought from her. My wife is very dirty. She cannot sweep, wash plates or clothes.

“She would not sweep her room. She would bring dirty clothes to my room. I did the sweeping.“I stayed in a separate room because I did not want her to litter my room with her dirty clothes.“My wife is very rude to me and my parents. I do not want her in my life anymore,’’ he said.

The President of the court, Prince Adegoke Adewale urged both parties to maintain peace and adjourned the case until Dec. 4 for further hearing.

  • Davido’s presence electrifies NYSC Camp

Soldiers, police and the officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had a Herculean time controlling corps members when popular musician, David Adeleke entered the Orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja on Thursday after the opening ceremony of the three week orientation programme for 2,152 2018 Batch B Stream II corps members.

The graduate of music from Babcock University was greeted by a crowd of cheering corps members who almost mobbed him as he came out of a white Mercedes Benz with a Police Force plate number PF 413-S.

The NYSC’s Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh’s best effort to avoid commotion as a result of the star’s presence proved abortive as corps members surrounded his office screaming with excitement after soldiers and officials managed to get him in.

Davido dressed in the NYSC ceremonial uniform signed the NYSC oath for corps members admidst camp officials and soldiers.

The officials had to summon the corps members to the parade ground with the beagle to draw them away from the State Coordinator’s office.
Afterwards he was brought out to the corps members who had been made to sit on the parade ground. He refused to stand on a makeshift stage brought for him but preferred to stand if front of his peers instead.

He told them to stay motivated in serving their country.

“Stay motivated; I love you all,” he said before he was whisked away.

In an interview with journalists, Davido said he chose to serve three years after graduation because he was still young.
“I am still young and I want to spend my time as a youth to serve my country. I am corper like any other and I think I can withstand the pressure.

Corps members and even others who sell in the Mammy Market ran around as his car left the camp. In his characteristic way, he threw a wad of cash in the air which made some stop the pursuit to scramble for the money. But others still went on until the car left the premises.

Some corps members described the experience as exciting, while some others felt it was unnecessary.
“Today was like the bomb. Lagos is the best camp. The best thing Davido came to camp. It was amazing.

Being a celebrity doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to school or serve. It is just to promote our country that no matter what you are go to school and serve your father’s land,” said Victor Adebiyi a graduate of Business administration
    from Ekiti State University.

Another corps member, said it was okay that the NYSC was cautious about Davido’s presence in camp because of the distraction
” This is the best they should have done.

Even if he is here in camp it would cause a lot of distraction because many people would want to mingle with him,” he said.
However, Tolani Tells, a Psychology graduate, felt the corps members should not have been kept on the parade ground because of the music star.

“It was embarrassing to me as a person. I see it as demeaning to me.

You won’t tell me to sit on the floor because someone is coming. He went to school like I did. I even spent six years for a four-year course; I spent more years in school than he did. I didn’t see him when he came to register and life did not end so if I didn’t see him today, it wouldn’t matter,” she said.

  • Ambode urges corps members to report security risks

Fresh set of corps members serving in Lagos State have been asked to help the government with security by reporting anything suspicious.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode gave this charge at the swearing in for Batch B Steam 1 Corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, in Iyana Ipaja on Thursday.

Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Oluseye Oladejo, gave them toll-free lines that they could use to reach security agencies and emergency services.

He said:” I implore you to key into our community security strategy of ‘if you see something, say something’ by calling our toll free lines, ‘767’ or ‘112’”.

He described Lagos as a hospitable place for them to do their national service.

While in camp for the three-week orientation programme, the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh, said the 3,087 corps members would be exposed to security tips by experts.

“We inculcate security consciousness in them right from the orientation. First they need to be secured during orientation before they go to the larger community. Part of what we do is we bring in security agencies to tell them about local and perculiar security issues in Lagos; and what to do to avoid falling victim of such,” he said.

Momoh also said the NYSC does not post corps members to volatile areas for their safety.

“We work with the security agencies to identify locations that have security challenges and we go all out to ensure that corps members are not posted to such communities because it it only I’m the atmosphere of peace that the corps member can effectively implement the national service,” he said.

Regarding disclosure of health status, Momoh said corps members were gradually opening up on medical issues that they may have. He said full disclosure was in Thier best interest so they could get support and be posted close to their families.

He said: “It is only when we know we can support you morally, medically because we have working relationship with all the Federal tertiary health Institutions in Lagos State. Presently we have a corps member at Yaba and we paid his bills.

“The present DG had been doing a lot I the area of corps members’ health and he has been supporting the states to ensure that we do our best because corps members’ health is a priority for him.”

Momoh thanked the Lagos State government for rehabilitating the camp ahead of the orientation programme which started on Monday.

He counseled the corps members to be law abiding, disciplined and participate in all camp activities including paramilitary drills, lectures, skills acquisition, leadership/citizenship trainings and inter-platoon competitions.

Highpoint of the event was the swearing in of the corps members by Justice Femi Segun who represented the Chief Judge of Lagos State.

  • Disclose health status, NYSC DG urges corps members

The Director General, National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ), Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure, has urged corps members to disclose their health status so they could be well taken care of.

He spoke while responding to questions at the closing of the orientation course for 2018 Batch A corps members at the NYSC Iyana Ipaja camp, Lagos Wednesday.

Kazaure assured the corps members that disclosure of any health challenge would not lead to their expulsion from camp.

“When you disclose your health status; when you are sick, it is not that you will be expelled from camp but for you to be moved closer to your doctors.  Please help us appeal to corps members to always disclose their health status,” he said.

Responding to questions on quality of food served corps members on camp, the DG praised state coordinators for making the most of the N650 daily allowance they are given to feed each corps member.

“I think the state coordinators are trying.  How much are they paid? As at last year, it was N500 per day but now they have increased it to N650 per day – maybe divided into N200, N200 and N250 per meal.  What kind of food will you cook with N200? I think the state coordinators have been trying,” he said.

In his speech, the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh, praised the corsp members for their discipline while in camp.

He however appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to expedite action on the construction of a new camp on the land he allocated to the NYSC in Agbowa, Ikorodu, saying the Iyana Ipaja camp was too congested for the 2,794 corps members it hosted.

“We are indeed very grateful for the allocation of land at Agbowa for the construction of a befitting orientation camp and it is our fervent hope that the construction of the camp be urgently looked into as the present facility is grossly inadequate considering the number of corps members deployed to the Centre of Excellence,” he said.

Attesting to the inadequacy of the camp, Jennifer Obi, who won the most outstanding corps member award, said the overcrowding of the camp was one of the few issues she had during the three-week programme.

“I enjoyed the camp.  It gave me an opportunity to learn a lot about things outside the classroom.  The camp officials were like our parents.  We were able to network, tap into our talents.  But the feeding wasn’t too good; the stew was watery.  Also the accommodation was not good.  We were 32 in a room and ventilation was an issue,” the graduate of Geography from the Obafemi Awolowo University said.

In his speech, Governor Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Oluseye Oladejo, urged employers of labour to accept corps members posted to their organisations.

The clash which occurred at Abule-Oki, Iyana-Ipaja, was over a girl.

It was gathered that youths from two streets engaged in a free-for-all on Tuesday, following the harassment of the Iyana-Ipaja girl by suspected cultists at a party in Elere, Agege.

The girl reported to youths of her area, who went on a reprisal.

They were said to have thrown bottles across the road, obstructing traffic until the arrival of policemen.

The fighting resumed on Wednesday during which a young man was killed.

An RRS officer was wounded on the head when the warring youths smashed the rear windshield of his patrol car.

When she got back to her base at Iyana-Ipaja she recounted her ordeal to those in her area who immediately embarked on a reprisal attack.

“As at 2am yesterday when the situation was brought under control, a body was recovered. This brings to question the moral of those involved in the fracas.
