    …As Makarfi harps on reconciliation

The former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has rejected the recognition given to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the candidate for the September 10 governorship election in Edo State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had, during the week, accepted Ize-Iyamu’s nomination. Ize-Iyamu’s name was submitted by the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee.

But, speaking in Abuja yesterday, Sheriff’s deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, described INEC’s decision to accept Ize-Iyamu as a “mere rumour”.

Ojougboh spoke while receiving a delegation of professionals from the Southsouth geo-political zone.

Ojougboh said: ”We heard a rumour making the rounds that INEC has accepted another person as candidate of the PDP for the Edo State governorship election

“I hereby dispel the rumour and categorically state that INEC has not yet communicated the decision to us”.

According to him, INEC was still considering the judgements and court orders arising from the lingering leadership crisis

He said the Federal High Court in Abuja had specifically asked the INEC to recognise only candidates presented by Sheriff.

Ojougboh said: “The court in Port Harcourt is not superior to the court in Abuja, and as such cannot reverse the specific orders of the Abuja court ruling that INEC can only accept PDP candidates from the Sheriff-led executive for purposes of Edo and Ondo governorship elections.”

He appealed to members of the party, particularly in Edo State, to remain calm as the matter was being sorted out. He urged the camp’s parallel candidate, Mr. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, to continue with his electioneering campaign.

The Makarfi camp has continued to record victories against the Sheriff camp in most of the court cases arising from the festering crisis in the party

Ize-Iyamu didn’t make Oshiomhole governor, says lawmaker

The lawmaker representing Egor Constituency in the Edo state House of Assembly, Mr Crosby Eribo, has said Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu lied when he claimed that he and few others made Adams Oshiomhole governor in 2007.

Eribo said it was laughable that the factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could make such claims when he (Ize-Iyamu) was ‘like a Personal Assistant to Governor Lucky Igbinedion.’

Eribo said Edo indigenes celebrated when Oshiomhole agreed to run for governorship because they wanted to associate with him.

He said: “all of us were in PDP then when Governor Lucky Igbinedion was governor, Ize Iyamu was just like Personal Assistant to Lucky so how can a PA make a labour leader governor.

“Oshiomhole came to Edo state as a popular labour leader who everybody respects in this country. And when he came he had to consult to know which political party he will use its platform to run for election.

“He was the beautiful bride then that every political party wanted to associate with including the then ruling PDP. I was three time local government chairman and people like Ize-Iyamu are even too small to talk then not to talk of bringing Oshiomhole.

“So, it is funny when we hear him always run his mouth that he made Oshiomhole governor. Ize-Iyamu left APC after he lost common Local Government congress in Orhiomwon. If he is now the Mr Fix it why did he not fix his people as executives in the Local Government where he hails from. Now he wants to be governor let us see how he can deliver himself. He should stop talking what he does not know, if Lucky Igbinedion is talking we will understand and not him.”

  • Ize-Iyamu to tackle insecurity

    Ize-Iyamu to tackle insecurity

The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has promised to tackle insecurity and turn the economy of the state around, if elected the governor.

He spoke in Lagos at the weekend during an interactive session with ‘Friends and Family of Ize-Iyamu’. He said his administration will ensure that the police and the local vigilante group are well funded.

Ize-Iyamu lamented that the state had not made judicious use of the security vote at its disposal, saying that only five per cent of the vote was being expended on the police and other security agencies.

He said his administration will hire experts who are well ground on security to save Edo from the hands of lawless men who have turned the place to a safe haven for their operations.

Ize-Iyamu said: “We have security agencies that are trained to handle security issues. The problem we have is that we are not giving them the necessary attention for the job. We will engage the police not at the state headquarters alone, but support the Divisional Police Officers at the various localities.

“We need the support of local vigilantes, who are well tutored in the terrains of their various communities. We will equip them with vehicles and whatever support they need, as long as Edo works again.

“The administration will enlist local support, because without them, it will be very difficult to combat crime. The youth need to be fully engaged in projects that will make impact in their lives. This will divest their mind from criminal activities.”

On the economy Ize-Iyamu said his administration will encourage local and foreign investors to embrace his economic policy, which will focus on agriculture and tourism.

He added that Edo indigenes who have travelled abroad for greener pastures will be encouraged to come back home. He noted that it was unfortunate that Edo youth were in foreign lands trying to eke a living from unviable sources.

He said: “This time around, it will not be like the jamboree that we have in the past; we will have to go there to engage them and see how we can bring our people to take part in what we will be doing in the state.

“Edo used to be the entertainment heartbeat of the country, but I am surprised that Edo is not benefitting from Nollywood. We are going to expand the scope of tourism and put our cultural heritage on the front burner for international consumption.

“If we have international support it will aid the economic environment of our state. So, we will ensure that the railway lanes from Lagos to Calabar do not only pass through Edo, but ensure they have stop station in the state.

“Any state that must make progress must have railways, sea ports and international airports. These are what we are going to work in partnership with the Federal Government and other relevant bodies.”

Ize-Iyamu expressed optimism that the PDP will excel at the poll. He urged the people to come out enmass to support his candidacy.

He added: “I have lived all my life in Edo State, it is with patriotic zeal that I want to serve the people and reposition the state to where it should be. But, we can only achieve this if you vote during the election.

“We need to return the state to where you and I will be proud of; the state is presently in deficit of infrastructure, where you have one teacher one principal in almost all the schools in the state.”

  • Stop insulting Igbinedion, APC tells Ize-Iyamu

Stop insulting Igbinedion, APC tells Ize-Iyamu

Edo State Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Osakpamwan Eriyo, has warned factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to stop insulting and embarrassing former Governor Lucky Igbinedion.

Igbinedion was absent at the flag-off of campaigns of Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

Eriyo challenged the PDP leadership to explain to Edo people why the former governor would not be leading the PDP campaign.

In a  press statement in Benin City,  Eriyo said it was shocking to see about eighty names in the campaign train of Ize-Iyamu but the name Lucky Igbinedion under whom Pastor Ize-Iyamu served both as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government  was missing.

The statement reads: “We see this as an insult and we demand an explanation from the Orbih led PDP. It is more shocking because everybody in Edo state knows the relationship between Ize-Iyamu and Igbinedion so how come he is being omitted in the list of those who will campaign for Ize-Iyamu.

“Ize-Iyamu was Igbinedion’s Personal Assistant when he was the Chairman of Oredo. When Lucky became governor, he made Ize-Iyamu Chief of Staff and later, the SSG. Why is it that Igbinedion’s name is missing on that list, or is Pastor Ize-Iyamu saying that he does not have confidence in the same person that made him”.

  • Ize-Iyamu: I ‘ll win

    Ize-Iyamu: I ‘ll win

Factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has declared that no amount of inducement would change the verdict of the September 10 governorship election.

He described himself as a veteran in election issues, adding that no intrigue by the All Progressives Congress will be too much for his team to tackle.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu said that his experience as The Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Government gave him a deep insight into the workings of government.

He said Edo has not fared well in the last seven years, owing to the abundant resources and the money received from the federation account.

He spoke when he visited the secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to introduce himself as the authentic candidate of the PDP.

Ize-Iyamu said the civil service has been depleted to less than 2000 workers and that the APC government has not employed into the service.

He said attention has not been given to agriculture, housing, industries, water and electricity.

Ize-Iyamu said the five star hospital and the new university built by Governor Adams Oshiomhole only cater for the rich and not the poor.

On the candidacy of Godwin Obaseki, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said he laughed after Obaseki emerged because no economic policy has been put in place in the state.

His words: “We cannot accept a situation that a state with so much resources has not move forward. A man who wants your vote must provide evidence of what he can achieve.”

“We are determined to rescue the state. We have a plan that is detailed. We are veterans in election issues. No intrigues that they will come up with that we will not tackle.

“The votes will count. No amount of inducement can change what will happen. The verdict is clear and we will not resort to violence.”

    PDM adopts Ize-Iyamu as candidate

The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) has adopted the factional governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as the governorship candidate.

It said the decision was taken after assessing the qualities of the candidates presented by the two dominant parties.

Edo State chairman of the PDM Nosa Omorodion said the PDM would use the resources at its disposal to actualise Pastor Ize-Iyamu  ambition.

He said the PDM would rally other smaller parties to give their support to Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

He noted that there was no need for smaller parties to present candidates that could not go anywhere in the polls.

The PDM chieftain, who held a meeting with the candidate said the change brought upon the country by the APC has been disastrous.

Responding, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said the Edo PDM leaders have demonstrated high level of patriotism and assured that he would not disappoint them and the Edo people, if elected into office.

He promised to integrate the Edo PDM members into his campaign committee, adding that his relationship with the PDM would not stop after the September 10 election.

The National Organization Secretary of the PDM, Paul Oronor; Edo State treasurer of the party, Philip Uwaifo; and Dr Saliu Edogiaware were some of the PDM leaders who attended the meeting.

  • Opinion poll shows I’ll win, says Ize-Iyamu

Opinion poll shows I’ll win, says Ize-Iyamu

Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional candidate in the September 10 governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said an opinion poll showed that he will win the election.

But he was however silent on the organisation that conducted the poll.

Ize-Iyamu addressed reporters in Benin, the state capital, where he declared his intention to begin his campaigns today.

The PDP factional candidate said over 20,000 seats would be moved to the venue of the event since the state government had allegedly denied him the use of the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

State Chairman of the Ahmed Makarfi’s PDP faction, Chief Dan Orbih, said the members were surprised to receive words that the approval for the use of the stadium had been cancelled.

The chairman said a new venue had been secured, adding that “a hundred Oshiomholes cannot stop the flagging off on Monday”.

He described the election of a factional candidate of the PDP as “a gathering of APC members, who voted for a suspended PDP member”.

Orbih insisted that various judgments on the party’s leadership tussle showed that Senator Ahmed Makarfi is the recognised caretaker chairman of the PDP.

But Edo State Commissioner for Sports, Priestley Ediagbonya, said he only received PDP’s letter, dated June 28, to use the stadium last Friday.

Ediagbonya, who said the letter got to the registry of the Ministry of Sports on June 28, added that he could not look into the requests made to the ministry on Thursday because he spent a good part of the day attending a party’s function.

He said his ministry had never declined PDP’s approval to use the stadium but did not say if the PDP’s request would be granted.

  • Edo 2016: Fresh hurdles for Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu

Edo 2016: Fresh hurdles for Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu

For September’s governorship election in Edo State, Godwin Obaseke and Osagie Ize-Iyamu have emerged the candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively, but there are fresh hurdles threatening their bids to succeed Governor Adams Oshiomhole, report Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu and Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan

THOUGH the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have concluded their primaries, leading to the emergence of Mr. Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as their candidates respectively, the issues that have trailed the results of the primaries have thrown up fresh hurdles for the candidates.

Before last week, most observers had said the results of APC and PDP primaries will, to a very large extent, make it clearer who will be Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s successor. Of course, both Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu were amongst top contenders in their parties but reports after the primaries show that except something is done quickly to reconcile the opposing stakeholders in the parties, the candidates and the parties may have more troubles than they ever imagined in their bid to take over Edo State Government House from the Comrade governor.

In the PDP, the trouble preceded the primaries. For example, before the primaries, the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, who was touted as an aspirant in Edo 2016 though he did not actually buy the nomination form of the party, shocked observers when he suddenly resigned his position, dumped PDP and pitched camp with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the PDP Governor’s Forum, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Onaiwu had explained that he took the decision in order to pursue his future ambition.

Part of the letter reads: “Unto every time there is a season, and in line with this Biblical truth, I wish to inform His Excellency of my resignation, effective, June 21, 2016 as the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum.

“I am persuaded to call it quits in order to pursue my future endeavour in other capacity. During my years as DG of the Forum, I am consoled by the fact that my loyalty, competence and service were at no time in doubt, therefore will be leaving with gratitude. I wish to thank His Excellency and all his brother governors, present and former, for their support during my term as DG and wish the Forum the best.”

He told journalists that he was still contesting the governorship election “But I am going to fly the flag of the APGA in Edo State”.

In the ruling party, APC, where aspirants had consistently alleged Governor Oshiomhole’s endorsement of Obaseke, there was fear, long before the primaries that if Obaseke wins, the other aspirants may not only protest the result but may go ahead to fight against the party. As it turns out, Obaseke won and the other aspirants have alleged rigging and manipulation. Chris Ogiemwonyi and Kenneth Imansuagbon for example have called for a forensic analysis of the voting materials used for the primary, alleging that the votes were cloned.

While Ogiemwonyi accused the Masari-led Committee of deploying cloned ballot papers used for the conduct of the primary, Imansuagbon ‎has said the primary election must be cancelled if the APC is truly committed to winning the general election.

According to him, talks about post-primary reconciliation ‎is an exercise in futility as the only option is for the party to reverse the governorship primary.

“We are not interested in reconciliation. We are approaching the Hon. Bamidele Appeal Committee. We are praying them to cancel the election and do a fresh primary. If they don’t do it, what will happen to the APC will be disastrous. If the appeal does not take our plea, then we will take our protest to the court of the people,” he said.

He also said, “When Anenih rigged me out in the Peoples Democratic Party, I told him he would loss and the party lost. So, the Bamidele Committee should cancel the election on the grounds of immorality.”

He added, “It was scientifically and electronically manipulated. Watermark technology was used to manipulate the election. You will not see it during the day. You will only see evaporated ink that will vanish in two minutes.

“One should ask why, despite the fact that accreditation finished around 2pm, voting was delayed till around 7pm. Under the floodlight they had allocated the votes to Obaseki.”

Since then, we gathered that moves have been made to reconcile the stakeholders in the party to enable the ruling APC to contest as a united force.

Though the state party chairman, Anselm Ojezua, in a statement said a Reconciliation Committee chaired by a Board of Trustees member, Prince Malik Afegbua, was set up soon after the primaries to reconcile aggrieved members, there were indications that the committee may not have achieved speedy results.

Other members of the committee are former deputy governor, Lucky Imasuen, Austin Omofuma, Charles Idahosa, Theophilus Okoh, Senator Domingo Obende and Lawrence Okah. A source however said not much progress had been recorded by this committee as at Thursday morning.

Towards the end of the week however, there were feelers that President Muhammadu Buhari may intervened directly in the crisis.

The Nation reported on Friday that the President asked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to meet with all the aspirants in the last governorship primaries and other stakeholders within 24 hours.

It would be recalled that the two aggrieved aspirants after the primaries, Ogiemwonyi and Imansuagbon, who took the matter to the Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele-led Appeal Committee, have threatened to drag the party to court or work against it if the committee and the party fail to nullify the primary.

As at the time of filing this report, it was not yet certain what the outcome of the appeal would be but Bamidele had said the committee was compiling its recommendations, adding that all the stakeholders invited met with the committee members and made oral presentations of the primaries.

How far this will go in resolving the matter remains to be seen.

    Ize-Iyamu’s many headaches

Even as his supporters continue to celebrate his emergence as the winner of last week’s PDP’s governorship primary election, the camp of Pastor Ize-Iyamu had a serious doubt cast on his going all the way to contest the general election, when early in the week, one of the claimants to the office of the National Chairman of PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, said his emergence as the party’s flag-bearer is illegal.

According to Sheriff, because the primary election purportedly held in the Edo State chapter of his party didn’t have his blessing and that of his executives, it should best be taken that the PDP, as led by him, is yet to conduct gubernatorial primary election in Edo State. He is, therefore, set to conduct a fresh exercise.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by him and his faction’s National Secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo, Sheriff urged the electoral body not to give legitimacy to the exercise as, according to him, it was a product of an illegal caretaker committee.

In another statement, the Sheriff’s group released a scheduled congress in Edo State to end on June 29, with the inauguration of congress committee scheduled for last Wednesday. Sheriff warned state chairmen and officers of the party to desist from meeting or having anything to do with the “illegal” caretaker committee and warned that anybody dealing with them is on his own.

Reliable party sources in Benin-City told The Nation that the Sheriff’s group is desperately reaching out to some party chieftains in the state, especially aspirants who contested and lost the last PDP governorship primary election in the state, to dump the Makarfi camp and seek the party’s ticket at the planned fresh primary election to be conducted tomorrow.

“We fear that serious confusion is imminent in the PDP here in Edo State. At a time when we should be plotting how to confront the ruling APC, a faction of the party has rejected the primary election held last week and is planning to conduct a fresh one.

In a bid to tear the party apart, they are now wooing some of the gubernatorial aspirants of the party who participated in the last primary election, especially Iyobosa Edebiri and Mathew Iduiyikemwen, to contest in their own primary. Should this happen, Edo PDP will be much divided against itself,” our source said.

The Nation also learnt that, aside from the threat posed by Sheriff’s plan to conduct another primary election, the camp of Ize-Iyamu is also worried about the likely reaction of INEC to the new development. Such is the anxiety that the group is said to be reaching out to Sheriff and his co-travelers for a truce.

“We are just hoping that this new development will not confuse INEC the more. Already, the commission has been making some funny statements over the state of things in our party. You will recall that it is yet to say categorically which of the two factions it will relate with. Given that one of the factions must submit the candidate’s name to INEC, we are worried.

There are so many court cases undecided and nobody can say when the judgement will start rolling in. This is why our candidate and his team are of the opinion that a truce with all warring factions is the best approach. If we have our way, I promise you there will be no fresh primary election in Edo PDP,” a party chieftain told The Nation.

The PDP candidate, Ize-Iyamu, is also struggling to shave off fears over his eligibility following allegations of his alleged involvement in the $155 million Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke campaign money scandal. Ize-Iyamu, according to reports, is undergoing investigation in connection with the alleged slush fund.

He was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of investigation into how the money was shared by some PDP leaders. Although he was interrogated and released by the anti-graft commission, there are allegations in some quarters within the PDP that he may turn out to be a problem for the party if more damaging revelations are made about the scandal.

“We hope our party had not knowingly played into the hands of Oshiomhole and the ruling APC with the election of Ize-Iyamu as our candidate. Knowing the ruling party, I can bet that they throw up this issue of his invitation by the EFCC when the campaign starts. I fear they may even use the EFCC to dig up salacious details of his alleged role in the scandal.

It is also not impossible that the opponent will ensure he is detained as the election approaches. If this occurs, what will happen to the chances of the PDP in the general election? Many of us are sincerely of the opinion that now that we can still correct our mistake, it is better for us to do so. A man with so many battles on his hands is not the best we can throw into the race,” our source said.

With so much to worry about so early in the race to Government House, pundits are of the opinion that it will not be an easy contest for Ize-Iyamu and his party against Governor Oshiomhole’s APC and its candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

Group urges Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu to pick women running mates

A women advocacy group, Women Situation Room Nigeria (WSRN), has urged the two major candidates in Edo State to pick women running mates for the election.

The contest is between Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At a media session in Abuja yesterday, the group’s National Coordinator, Joy Onyesoh, said the group would be ready to mobilise women voters in support of any of the candidates that picks a female running mate.

Onyesoh also said the group would always be ready to mobilise support for female contestants in elections at all levels, irrespective of party affiliations.

She accused the existing political parties of denying women the needed leverage in electoral contests, saying they are always overwhelmed by their male counterparts during nominations.

According to her, the WSRN would be engaging the nation’s political parties in the next few days, with the view to articulating the rightful position of women in the political system.

Onyesoh said the group will demand a review of the constitutions of the parties for the purpose of reserving some party offices and elective positions exclusively for women.

She identified material inequalities and domination of party machinery by the men folk as some of the factors working against women’s active participation in the electoral process.

The coordinator appealed to the political class to stop the trend in which women are seen and treated only as singing and dancing groups at political rallies.

She called on political party administrators to consider making nominations to elective positions free for women in all political parties.

She added that the WSRN was already working on a position paper to be articulated into a bill for onward transmission to the National Assembly for consideration.

Onyesoh called on the government at all levels to increase the number of women appointees in their administrations, adding that the present empowerment options for women appear constricted.
