  • UOSSM, Geneva, other demand aid in Al Rukban camp

Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations ( UOSSM ) alongside Geneva and Switzerland have demanded for the immediate delivery of food, water and medical aid to the Al Rukban refugee camp.

This call was made in a press release on Monday, 15th October, 2018 following series of causalities that has befallen the camp and its dwellers in the recent year.

In the release, it was made known that Aid has been blocked from reaching the camp since January, 2018, hence degenerating the camp to a critical state.

“The entire population is suffering from severe malnutrition and 15 people have died from preventable conditions in October alone. 150 patients currently require urgent medical attention.”

Dr. Hussam Al Fakir, The Chairman of UOSSM Intl. and Canadian Dentist expressed his anger towards the blockage of Aid saying that it is ridiculous to deny the inhabitants of the camp the basic necessities of life.

“It is barbaric and illegal under international law to deny these civilians aid. Children are facing horrific malnutrition and are drinking contaminated water”.

He added “Pregnant women are giving birth in the desert without even the most basic medical care. Those that desperately need cesarean sections have not been allowed to leave the camp and are in a perilous situation. We cannot wait another minute to send aid to Al Rukban.”

Attesting to the claims of the doctor, the community workers noted that on the 8th of October 2018, in less than 24 hours, two newborns died in the camp.

“4-month-old Huda Raslan died from malnutrition and lack of medical access while Munaf Al Mahmoud, a one year old baby died due to lack of adequate medical care.

  • ‘Reverend, sisters smoke in real life’- Beverly defends controversial photo

If you are confused as to why Beverly Osu has been on the typing hands and speaking lips of most Nigerians, here is the reason.

Prior to the photoshoot done by Beverly Osu where she was dressed as a “hot looking nun” for the cover page of the Taylor magazine, the pictures have turned out to bring more controversy from Nigerians who have refused to turn deaf ears and blind eye to the pictures.

To most, the picture is an insult to the catholic faith. To some, the photoshoot is merely an art.

After several cyber abuses towards her, Beverly Osu has come out to defend herself and the picture inclusive.

Taking to social media, Beverly has said that Reverend Fathers and sisters smoke in real life.

“In any case, reverend sisters and fathers smoke in real life which has not been established as a sin to my knowledge. Dear Nigerians I don’t do what I do for your applause…If these images came out for a movie, will it be ok? It is funny how you all just sinned because of a beautiful artistic picture: I laugh in Hebrew MATHEW 7: 1-5,” she wrote.

ASUU strike suspension: Students Happy, Unhappy, Indifferent

Mixed reactions by students of tertiary institutions have greeted the suspension of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The five weeks old strike was suspended  on September 18 by the union after a meeting with federal government officials.
The reactions ranged from those who were unhappy about the suspension to those who can’t wait for classes to resume.
ASUU said the strike which started on August 13 would be suspended till October to give room for the federal government to fulfill its pledges.

Below are some of their reactions

I’m totally indifferent about the strike, they can call it off or continue. I just don’t care. Whatever they decide is fine with me.
    Sarah Anderson,  Lagos state university
I’m not happy that this strike was suspended.I had plans of working hard to earn my tuition during this period. All those plans have crashed now.
    Victory Demonday
    Abia State university
I’m extremely happy that the strike was suspended, because if they had not suspended the strike, our academic pace would have been reduced in respect to the university’s academic calendar.
    Ibukun Dennis
    University of Lagos

The strike is just suspended, it will be called off, if the Federal Government goes ahead to implement the agreement reached with ASUU.

But if this doesn’t happen, there’s every chance ASUU might go back to the industrial action.
    Ejiofor Ekene
    University of Nigeria Nsukka

I’m happy the strike was called off but we don’t have to jubilate yet, because it was only suspended for a month. Probably, we should look forward to embarking on another strike of the federal Government does not meet ASUU’s demand by October.

We all know the way out. The government should meet the union’s demand by paying them so as to prevent them from embarking on further strike
    Wunmi
    Onabisi onabanjo University
I am not happy, I wanted to work a little before going back to school and now they have spoilt my plan,i think ASUU should continue the strike
    Anthony Chimerezie
    Ebonyi state university
I’m not really happy because I really don’t want to resume this year . I want to stay back home to get my body system prepared for the stress ahead.
    Obiageli Anthony
    University of Port Harcourt
I’m happy the strike has been suspended, because I want to spend only four years in school, and graduate with my mates, but I think they should conclude with the federal Government, in order to avoid another strike.
    Onwusonye Joy
Michael Okpara university of Agriculture, Umuahia
This suspended strike is a good sign that something would be done about ASUU’s demands by the federal Government and that the strike would not be stretched for long, as opposed to other industrial actions in the past.
