    Tricycle rider appears in court for alleged manslaughter

    A 26-year-old tricycle rider, Temitope Sunday, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly causing the death of two women through reckless driving.

    The News  reports that Sunday, a resident of Ayobo area of Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and causing death.

    According to the Police Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on Jan.17 at Pako Bus Stop, Ipaja, Lagos.

    He said that the accused, being the operator of the tricycle, rode it on the highway in a reckless and dangerous manner, and caused the death of two women.

    “The accused caused the death of Mrs Rosemary Okpanachi, 60, and Mrs Rebecca Momodu, 41,” he said.

    Ayorinde, who said the victims boarded Sunday’s tricycle, noted that the accused was on a high speed when the accident occurred.

    “The accused was on full speed, he lost control and rammed into an incoming Nissan bus that was on the other side of the road.

    “The victims (accused’s passengers) were rushed to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead,” the prosecutor said.

    He said that the offences contravened Section 19(2) Law No 4 Vol. 45 of Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted a bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The magistrate, Mrs J.O. Awope, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidences of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Awope adjourned the case to Feb. 12, for mention.

    Security guard bolts with employer’s generator first day at work

    A newly-employed 35-year-old security guard, Akinwale Akinduro, who allegedly stole his employer’s  generator valued at N2 millon on the first day of assumption of duty, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Akinduro was, however, released on a bail of N500,000.

    Akinduro, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a charge of stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs J.O. Awope, who gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on Dec. 2, 2016 at Agege, a Lagos suburb.

    He said the accused stole a 20 KVA generator valued at N2 million, property of the complainant, Mrs Sidikatu Oyeleye.

    Ayorinde said the complainant employed the accused as a guard to protect the generator, but the generator was stolen the day he started work.

    “The following morning after the accused started work, the complainant discovered that the generator was missing and the accused was nowhere to be found.

    “All efforts made by the complainant to find her generator and the accused were unsuccessful as the accused’s phone was switched off.

    “He was later arrested on May 22 by the police,” he told the court.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates three years imprisonment for offenders.

    The case was adjourned until July 26 for mention.

    Trader charged with break-in, stealing

    A 27-year-old trader, Matthew Alebiosu, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into an apartment to steal phones.

    Alebiosu, a resident of Egbeda area of Lagos, is charged with burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, said that the accused committed the offences on June 19 at Alaja Road, Ayobo, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and one other person still at large conspired to burgle the apartment of one Mr Adeyinka Dada, stealing a Blackberry phone and one Ipad mini phone, both valued at N27,600.

    Ayorinde said that the accused jumped into the compound of the complainant and destroyed the window burglar proof to gain access into the flat.

    “He was, however, arrested when he wanted to sell one of the phones at the computer village; having sold one already,” the prosecutor said.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 307 prescribes seven years jail term for burglary.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs J. O. Awope, adjourned the case till July 10 for mention.

  • Security guard jailed 12 months for threat to life

    A 23-year-old security guard, Ali Sani, is to spend the next one year in prison for threatening to stab a man with knife, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court ruled on Wednesday.

    The Magistrate, Mrs J.O. Awope, pronounced the verdict after Sani pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, threat to life and breach of peace.

    Awope said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

    “You are hereby sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.”

    Sani had at his arraignment on May 3 pleaded guilty and was remanded in prison.

    He blamed his action on the Devil.

    The accused, a resident of Ijaiye Street, Agege, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offences with another man still at large on April 26 in Agege.

    According to him, the accused with his accomplice threatened to kill a man, Muhammed Kudan, with a knife for an undisclosed reason.

    “The accused unlawfully entered the complainant’s room and held his shirt.

    “He brought out a knife and attempted to slit the complainant’s throat but he was rescued by some neighbours, who reported the case to the police.

    The offences contravened Sections 56, 168, and 412 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
