  • Insecurity, poverty on the increase, says JNI

As Muslims entered the third day of Ramadan fasting, the apex Islamic body, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has raised concerned that, insecurity and poverty have been on the increase in Nigeria.

It therefore asked Muslims all over the country to be fervent in prayers for restoration of security, peace, stability, progress and development of the country.

JNI in a Ramadan statement signed by its Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu also called on leaders at all levels to deliver programmes that will reduce the public outcry against them.

According to JNI, “Overtime, JNI has been calling on Muslims to fervently pray for the restoration of security, peace, stability, progress and development in Nigeria. We once again reiterate same call, as the situation seems to be deteriorating with armed banditry, kidnappings, theft and abject poverty in the increase.

“Similarly, JNI uses this medium to remind leaders at all levels that success shall only come their respective ways when they rollout friendly policies to the citizenry. At the moment, the outcry is loud and clear! Therefore, this period should be a sober reflection time for us all and make the necessary amend, in order to seek Allah’s pleasure.

“Governments at all levels as well as individuals who have the wherewithal are called upon to extend benevolent gestures – such as alms giving and supports to the indigents in severe need, as well as millions of IDPs spread across the country. This is the most appropriate time to show compassion and of course, the needy would want to see such assistance now. Moreover, it is more rewarding,” It said.

Speaking further on Ramadan, the statement read that, “following the successful commencement of Ramadan fasting two days ago, JNI under the leadership of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, JNI, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, felicitates with the Nigerian Muslim Ummah, as it was very pleasing that Allah (SWT) made the commencement in harmony. Alhamdulillah.

“JNI as usual uses this medium to call on the Nigerian Muslims to redouble their respective efforts in being more God-conscious through punctual observance of the five daily and Taraweeh prayers congregationally, frequent recitation of the Glorious Qur’an, ardent supplications, as well as continued remembrance of Allah (SWT).

“Certainly, Ramadan is a month of servitude and dedication to Allah, the Most High, self-restraint and patience, thus we must collectively strive to earn Allah’s pleasure, and forgiveness in this blessed month. Slacking in performing good deeds is the enemy of time. Therefore we must be more dedicated to the worship of Allah now and beyond, as there is no better time than the month of Ramadan.

“Ramadan being the month of Tafseer (Exegesis) of the Glorious Qur’an, respected Mufasseerun (scholars engaged in the exegesis of Glorious Qur’an) are urged to put the citizenry on the pedestal of goodness and be reminded of the consequences of vices.

“In addition, the Mufasseerun are implored to conduct their respective Tafseer sessions in line with the Qur’an and Sunnah of the Noble Prophet, using courteous language and kind words. They should as well shun bad preaching during the Tafseer sessions.

“By and large, JNI wishes all Muslim faithful an accepted and rewarding Ramadan. Aamin,” It read.

  • Plateau crises deliberately planned with political, religious mindset – JNI

The apex Islamic body in the north, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has raised alarm that, the recent crisis in Plateau state that led to the killing of scores of residents and motorists was deliberately planned and orchestrated with political and religious mindset.

JNI, while lamenting the devastating effect of the crisis especially on innocent passers-by, after three years of peaceful and harmonious coexistence among the people of the state, decried the return to the “black-dark days of bloodbath”.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu and made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Thursday called on security agencies to immediately fish out the culprits of the dastardly acts for punitive measure to be meted to them.

The religious body however urged Federal and state governments to immediately rehabilitate the Saminaka-Jos road to create alternative routes for motorists and to establish intelligence strike forces along the Abuja – North east route to safeguard motorists passing by in case of another crisis.

According to JNI, “It is very demoralizing after experiencing three solid years of success stories of harmonious coexistence between the citizenry on the Plateau to have woken up back to the black-dark days of bloodbath of the past.

“After critical and careful perusal of the sad and painful happenings of the recent horrific carnage on the Plateau, JNI national headquarters observed with dismay that the most recent attacks on the Plateau were well orchestrated with political and religious mindset.

“Despite the fact that in the past three years, there has been success stories of peaceful coexistence between the inhabitants of Plateau state. It is disheartening that once again, human life does not matter to some disgruntled elements within the nation.

“Aren’t we making ourselves a laughing stock before the comity of nations? Why must we allow ourselves to be used by miscreants and senseless politicians at all cost? As a matter of fact, the dastardly acts went on for some days unabated and why?

“It is with utmost concern and sorrow that the JNI condemn in-toto such dastardly acts and calls on security agencies to intensify efforts in fishing out the culprits. We call on the Federal, Kaduna and Plateau state governments to as a matter of utmost urgency rehabilitate the Saminaka – Jos Road, as Muslims and other innocent passersby are no longer safe plying the Southern Kaduna to Jos Road, as well as the Abuja North-East routes through Plateau state.

“An intelligence strike force unit should be mounted at the Southern Kaduna – Jos, and the Abuja to North-East routes through Plateau state, for the safety of those who don’t have any choice but to ply same road. This is because most victims of the recent carnage are innocent Abuja to North-East travelers through Plateau state. We also advise that serious security measures should be taken on all the identified villages that have been notorious in causing distress to motorists, particularly in Kaduna and Plateau states.

“If perchance crisis erupts on the Plateau and/or Kaduna state, Muslims are always the soft targets on the Southern Kaduna Road to Jos. The Plateau state under the present leadership is trying it’s best to share the state resources in equity and justice. But the bad ones are busy trying to make things difficult and inaccessible to the poor in order to frustrate the state and federal government.

Plateau state has appreciated positively. It is this development that is being envied by the enemies within and outside Plateau state. The developments in terms of agricultural, human and land resources have seemingly progressed. We call on all to propagate the mission of peace, tranquility, humility and humbleness, for no one has the right of living over and above the other citizens in Nigeria. Moreover, we cannot be humans without humanity,” the JNI scribe added.

Southern Kaduna killings: Diverse stakeholders meet for peace and reconciliation

KAFANCHAN – The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria on Thursday, July 13 hosted an all-inconclusive meeting of critical stakeholders of Southern Kaduna as it continued its longstanding mediation for dialogue, reconciliation and peace-building in Southern Kaduna where several communities have experienced violent crisis resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties in the past.
This is coming after the organization successfully brokered a similar peace deal and reconciliation in June 2017 between the Fulanis and Natives of Kaninkon Chiefdom in Southern Kaduna.

GPF Nigeria, which had held several separate meetings with each of the stakeholder groups and communities since January, for the first time brought them together for the Southern Kaduna Peace and Reconciliation Meeting.

In attendance at the meeting in Kafanchan were leaders and representatives of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MABCAN), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Jema’a Foundation, Local Fulanis and other Southern Kaduna stakeholders.

Chiefdoms and communities that suffered violence in recent past including Kaninkon, Godogodo, Numana, Moroa, Atakar, Chawai, Kagoma, and Dangoma which is the Fulani District under Kaninkon Chiefdom were all represented by their leaders.

In his remarks, the Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria Mr. John Oko thanked all the stakeholders and community leaders that have been involved in the ongoing consultations and mediation process over the past several months which has culminated to the meeting being held today. He said: “It is our hope that today will mark the beginning of the important part of the process of our working together for Peace-building in Southern Kaduna which is fundamental to the achievement of sustainable development.”

“During the consultations, one point we heard repeatedly was that everyone was tired of the hostilities and wanted it to end. We believe that this meeting today should send a clear signal that the end of the violence has come, and going forward, you will all work together to resolve all pending issues. I want to assure you that Global Peace Foundation is committed to supporting you in that process until lasting peace returns to Southern Kaduna.” Oko added.

Northern Nigeria Co-Coordinators of Global Peace Foundation, Sheikh Halliru Abdullahi Maraya and Rev. John Joseph Hayab earlier in their opening remarks reminded the people the crisis has affected every family in the State while calling for the killings to stop and give peace a permanent place. They reminded the participants that “We are One Family Under God.”

Also speaking, President of the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU), Solomon Musa said the group would not support killings in the area. “We in SOKAPU will not support killing of human beings or animals, we will defend the Hausas, Fulanis, Bajjus, Jabas or any other tribe; we are committed to peace and justice.”

Leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) delegates Alhaji Haruna Usman Tugga, urged all to live as brothers and sisters, stressing that, “we must forget the past for a brighter future, we must support peace for development.’’
Jema’a Foundation President Alhaji Abdullahi Zubairu, said all parties need peace, and urged all stakeholders to go back to the olden days when everybody lived peacefully as one.

Leaders of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) John Bwankwot and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) Audu Barau, both urged the people to learn to live together as one to engender love and understanding.

Several other speakers during the meeting thanked the Global Peace Foundation for her fairness, commitment, and efforts throughout the mediation process while calling on participants to take the message of peace and reconciliation to the various groups they represent.

A highlight of the meeting was a ceremony where attendees embraced each other as a sign of forgiveness and reconciliation.

One of the outcomes of the meeting was the consensus that Global Peace Foundation should constitute a Southern Kaduna Peace and Reconciliation Committee with membership representing the stakeholder groups and communities which will work together going forward to resolve all pending issues in order for lasting peace to return to Southern Kaduna.

There was pandemonium in Kaduna metropolis on Monday morning, as angry mob were said to have lynched to death, a man suspected to have burgled a house the previous night in Kabala West area of the city.

Security agencies have however arrested 18 persons suspected to have been involved in the unrest that followed the lynching in Kabala West and Ungwan Muazu.

A Kaduna State Government statement said that security agencies arrested the hoodlums around the two communities following reports of threats to law and order.

The Nation gathered that, the incident started around Kaje street of Kabala West on Sunday, but it led to serious fracas between youths of two neighboring communities of Kabala West and Ungwan Muazu on Monday.

Accordingly to an eyewitness account, the incident which occurred on Sunday evening led to fracas on Monday morning between two groups suspected to be for and against the alleged thief that was lychned to death by angry mob.

This development caused tension around the city, as many drivers, passing through Kaduna had to divert to another routes from Nnamdi Azikiwe bypass, western side of the city.

The protesting groups were seen throwing sharp objects at each other as well as at other passersby.

Another eyewitness account said, “Some of us cannot go back home since we managed to escape from the area in the morning because soldiers and police have blocked the roads leading to our houses.

“Those residents that left for work in the morning have to call back home to their families to remain indoor while those that have left the house are asked to look for a safer place within the city centre and stay.

“It is unfortunate that people are linking the fracas to religion, but I want to tell you that it has nothing to do with religion at all,  a thief was lychned to death and his so called friends decided to take law into their hands.

“We are however happy that security people intervened immediately, and the situation is returning to normalcy as I speak to you”.

Spokesperson to Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Samuel Aruwan while confirming the arrests of the suspects, said they will be charged to court as soon as the investigations are concluded.

Aruwan dismissed stories making the round on social media that the crisis has escalated to other parts of Kaduna town leading to the killing of a few person and others injured and warned those peddling false stories to desist.

According to him, “the state government has sent a high powered delegation to mediate between Kabala West and Ungwan Mu’azu communities. The delegation was led by Acting Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim Sani, the Special Adviser on Internal Security and Special Assistant Media and Publicity Samuel Aruwan.

“The delegation met with the leaderships of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), youth leaders, security agencies and traditional rulers of the two communities.

“At the end of the meeting, the two sides unanimously agreed that all those responsible for the unrest should be fished out and brought to justice. The delegation also commended all residents of the communities that collaborated with security agencies in containing the unrest that could have degenerated beyond the two communities.

“The meeting resolved that all communities will be proactive in reporting any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies, and that it is illegal to resort to self-help or any act that amounts to taking the law into their hands”.
