Injured  Musiala eyes competitive comeback in 2025

Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala said on Wednesday he was confident of making a competitive return this year for the German champions after he broke his leg and ankle in the Club World Cup tournament in July.

The 22-year-old Germany international, a key player for the national team’s 2026 World Cup hopes, sustained a fibula fracture with a broken and dislocated ankle following a collision with then-Paris St Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in their Club World Cup match in Atlanta.

“The leg is progressing well and healing according to plan,” Musiala told SportBild magazine. “I do not need crutches any more but I don’t want to rush things. I will take the necessary time.

“I don’t want to set a specific date. But given the progress I have made so far I want to be playing competitive matches with Bayern in 2025,” he added.

Musiala, who finished last season with 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions as Bayern won the Bundesliga title, has not blamed the Italian keeper for his injury, saying such injuries happen in football.

“Mentally the first few weeks were not easy for me. But there is no point in being constantly frustrated about the situation,” he said.

Musiala signs new Bayern Munich deal with $183m exit Clause

After signing Alphonso Davies to a new long-term contract, the next domino at Bayern Munich has fallen. On Friday, the Rekordmeister announced that Jamal Musiala had signed a new deal with Bayern Munich that will run until 2030.

“I’m really happy,” Musiala said in a statement released by the club. “Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I took my first steps in professional football here and firmly believe we can achieve something big with this club in the coming years.”

How big is the package of the deal. Media reports in Germany suggest that Musiala will earn around €25 million gross ($26.3 million) annually. The signing fee is understood to be around €20 million ($21 million). It is a significant package but with the club breaking through the $1 billion revenue mark, Bayern felt comfortable concluding the deal.

The biggest aspect of the deal is that it includes a release clause. Bayern Munich has resisted adding such a provision to any player’s contract in the past. But it recently emerged that star striker Harry Kane has a release clause that would allow him to leave Bayern Munich this upcoming summer for €60 million ($63 million).

Perhaps setting that precedent made it easier to agree to a release clause in the Musiala contract as well, especially as it appeared to be the final stumbling block to getting this deal across the line. Furthermore, the release clause is significant. Active from this summer onwards, Musiala can leave the club for €175 million ($183 million) over the next four years and for €100 million ($105 million) in 2029.

Man City lead race for Musiala

Manchester City are leading the race to sign Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala this summer, the Independent reports. Liverpool, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are among the other clubs interested, although the trio have financial constraints.

Musiala, 21, is uncertain about Bayern’s ability to compete for the Champions League, and is therefore said to be weighing up his own options.

“Musiala’s contract runs until 2026, and he has so far shown little inclination to extend or improve as his profile grows. There is a belief among other clubs that he may be buyable this year or next, with City the most interested,” The Independent  wrote.  “The club’s hierarchy want to specifically improve their attacking areas this summer, especially as Phil Foden moves into a more influential role and Kevin De Bruyne advances into his mid-thirties. City want two players who can fluidly play in a few areas of the forward line, and there is also interest in West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta and Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise.
