Ibori unveils Foundation for Delta youths

Former Delta State governor Chief James Onanefe Ibori, has unveiled a platform, Otemu Educational Foundation (OEF), to provide education for young Deltans who are unable to access qualitative education.

Ibori made the disclosure on his Facebook page, Saturday evening, identifying education as critical in eradicating poverty.

With the motto, “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow,” the ex-governor expressed hope that the foundation would have the desired impact of changing the lives of its beneficiaries.

The Facebook post reads: “It is with great pride and a profound sense of purpose that I introduce the Otemu Educational Foundation (OEF). This initiative was born from a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education and a commitment to uplift the indigent yet incredibly talented youth of Delta State, Nigeria.

“The OEF is dedicated to transforming the educational landscape for underprivileged students in Delta State. We recognise the vital role education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty, and our foundation is committed to providing scholarships and resources to talented students who would otherwise lack the financial means to pursue their academic dreams.

“By investing in these bright young minds, we are not only fostering individual growth but also empowering future leaders who will drive positive change in their communities and beyond.

“We are in the process of developing a world-class system that will be digitally driven to enhance our pre-selection process and candidate profiling. This will ensure that the chosen beneficiaries are worthy in both character and learning. A dedicated web portal will soon be launched to mark the beginning of our application season.

“We believe that education is the cornerstone of progress and development. Our goal is to create an environment where every student, regardless of socio-economic background, has access to quality education and the resources needed to succeed. With the support of our communities, partners, and donors, we are confident that the Otemu Educational Foundation will make a significant impact, creating a brighter and more equitable future for all.

“On this note, I humbly invite you to join us on this journey of empowerment and transformation. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of promising young Deltans and pave the way for a prosperous future.”

Ibori: I’m impressed with Bayelsa’s development

    • …as ex-governor commends Diri

Former Delta state governor, James Ibori has praised Bayelsa state governor, Douye Diri, for his outstanding performance over the past four years.

Ibori, speaking during a visit to the Government House in Yenagoa, applauded Diri’s impactful governance and leadership in the Niger Delta region.

The former Delta governor, who is fondly called Odidigborigbo for his political sagacity, described his visit to Bayelsa as a homecoming, highlighting his longstanding friendship with the state dating back to the tenure of the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Describing Bayelsa as the heartbeat of the Niger Delta, Ibori commended Diri for his developmental achievements, leadership qualities, and efforts towards peace and unity in the region.

He said: “I am glad to be home. I came here last in 2017 and coming in now, I am impressed with the level of development I saw. I thank you for all you are doing for our people and we pray that God continues to guide you.

“This is the heartland of Niger Delta and let me recognise the contribution of Bayelsa people to the well-being of the region and I know you are not relenting.

“I encourage you to continue to perform. You did very well and that is why you got a second term. We all score you very high.

“You know how to unite people. You have the maturity and temperament to know when politics starts and ends. God will continue to give you more success.”

Ibori was on Saturday honoured with a chieftaincy title by the king of Ogboin Clan, His Royal Majesty Oweipa Jones-Ere, at his palace in Amassoma town.

In his remarks, Governor Diri hailed Ibori for his contributions to the Niger Delta struggle.

He recalled how Ibori was at the forefront of agitations for resource control by states of the region and expressed delight that he had continued to fight for the region’s interest.

Diri noted that the former Delta governor left lasting legacies in his state and the region at large, stressing that true sons of the Niger Delta were proud to have him as leader.

He also stated that the injustices Ibori fought against as governor still existed today and appealed to him to continue to join forces with other stakeholders in the region to right the wrongs.

He restated the need for Nigeria to practice true federalism based on equity, fairness, and justice.

  • Ibori drags UK to EU Court of Human Rights

Former Delta state governor, Chief James Ibori, had instructed his lawyers to institute an appeal against the United Kingdom in the European Court of Human Rights.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Ibori’s Media Assistant, Mr Tony Eluemunor, and made available to journalists in Warri.

Ibori’s decision followed on Wednesday British Court of Appeals’ decision to dismiss his appeal against his judgement of the lower court, which had sentenced him to a jail term.

According to the statement, “At 11: AM today, judgment of the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division, was handed down. Once again the British Courts have unjustifiably denied me justice.  The injustice contrived against me continued at the Court of Appeal. By this denial, I have been prevented from challenging my conviction even though the Crown Prosecution accepts the fact that there was a proven case of Police corruption.

“The Court of Appeal declined my application for leave to appeal my conviction based on Crown Prosecution (CPS) and Police disclosure failures compounded by police corruption unearthed way before I even arrived in the UK. The allegation of Police corruption, at least of Mr. John Macdonald, the Investigating Police Officer in my case, started on or about 10th of September 2007 while I was still in Nigeria. This issue of police corruption was raised by a different agency of the UK government working on an entirely different case at the time

“This material fact should have been disclosed to my legal team on my arrival in the UK but it was not disclosed because the Crown Prosecution Service and the London Metropolitan Police knew the devastating and fatal impact that would have had on the case against me. The UK authorities chose deliberately to cover it up even though my legal team asked that all-important question in open court.

“This continued cover-up, which is inimical to justice delivery, has been displayed again today by the Court of Appeal when it denied me the opportunity to appeal my conviction at the Appeal Court and possibly the Supreme Court of England and Wales. This is international conspiracy carried too far to the detriment of the integrity of the British Judicial System. ”Numerous people have asked me to discontinue the appeal adding: ‘But what do they care. It’s a matter that has to do with a bunch of “corrupt” Nigerians. They can throw judicial decency to the dogs’.

“I say to the members of the public who have shown personal concern for my predicament that I will strive with every breath of energy in me to pursue the cause of justice not only for my sake but because it is the right thing to do to make the world a better place and to defend the rights of the down-trodden.

“So, I have put my legal team on notice to explore every legal avenue to expose this massive cover-up – including applying to the European Court of Human Rights to ensure that this assault on my fundamental rights does not stand.

“As I said in an earlier statement, “The British judiciary is supposed to rest on a strong foundation of openness, transparency and the rule of law. My legal team have done their best to draw attention to the issue of disclosure and the protocol associated with materials obtained through interception. It is a short and simple case that does not require the length of time it has taken to adjudicate.

“It is either my application for permission to appeal is granted, based on the fatal nature of the disclosure-failure, or a brutal assault on the integrity of British Justice would be committed. The Crown Prosecution Service, the Metropolitan Police and the Department for Professional Standards deliberately spat on the law when they wilfully disregarded the stipulations of the law governing the use of disclosures. This flaw is unpardonable in the British legal system even in serious cases like terrorism much less fraud and money laundering of which prison terms have been served and expired”. Well, today, a brutal assault was committed against the delivery of justice in the UK.

“Unfortunately, I am the victim of this assault on the delivery of justice and this ruling further exposes the failing of the British legal system. Evidence exists which confirms the police corruption in my case, the Court is of aware of it, the prosecution is aware of it, and even though it was withheld from my legal team, they have now become aware of it.

“The Court of Appeal did not permit my legal team to even refer to this evidence let alone advance it as part of our case. Even now, I am not permitted to disclose the nature of this evidence for fear of committing an offence. In these circumstances, my legal team argued that there were only two options available. One; the prosecution should concede the appeal, or the Court should halt proceedings as an abuse of process because a fair hearing was no longer possible.

“Disappointingly, both the prosecution and the court took the view that saving face was more important than dispensing justice.  Yet, I am fully resolved to challenge the ruling of the Court of Appeal at the European Court of Human Rights. Let the days be gone when British legal luminaries come to give seminars in Africa boasting about having the best legal system in the world.

“I thank my legal team for a great job. They have fought gallantly to save the British justice delivery from those undermining it. I have no doubt in my mind that justice will come my way – eventually and no matter how long it takes”, it said

  • Ibori mourns Okogwu, Dafinone

Former Delta state governor, Dr James Ibori, has expressed sadness over the departure of two Delta men of means; Chief Sunny Okogwu and Senator David Dafinone.

Chief Ibori, in separate statements issued by his Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, described the two men as exceptional, leaving indelible legacies in the lives of Delta state and its various peoples.

Describing Okogwu, Ibori said  “though Okogwu was every inch a Delta state indigene and was particularly proud of his Asaba root and the town’s title of Ojisi, which he held, he at the same time felt very much at home in the preeminent Northern city of Kaduna. His remarkably picturesque house, the “Ship House” is a tourist masterpiece.

“Indeed, Chief Okogwu was a political reference point in Kaduna for decades. He achieved this status well-before his brother-in-law, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd) became the President of Nigeria and remained so for the decades after IBB had left office.

“Okogwu remained very colourful until his death. His press interviews and political statements were always as fiery as they were difficult to decipher. He once said he needed to be first decoded in order to be understood. What was not in doubt was his business acumen; he built his business empire in an area that many Nigerian businessmen and women would rather leave well alone; aviation. He had the dream of training pilots locally and manufacturing aircraft parts.

“Chief Okogwu, all through his life, always threw his doors open to people from the Mid-West region, Bendel and later Delta states. I experienced his remarkable generosity during my brief stay in Kaduna prison. Chief Okogwu was indeed one of my sureties and he offered his Ship House as a bond to meet my bail conditions. His fragrant memory will always linger in my mind. May God grant him eternal rest”, he said.

Speaking about Senator Dafinone, Ibori noted that he rendered a remarkable service to Delta and Nigeria, describing him as a “Jack of many trades.

“Though David Dafinone was globally known as a Chartered Accountant, one of the few ones who made it into the Guinness Book of Records – his family has the largest number of accountants in the world, he actually studied Economics. He combined this with part-time professional accountancy examinations as he progressed through the university. As he graduated with a degree in Economics he was also acquiring his professional certificate in Accountancy at the same time.

“He worked with topflight organisations both as an Economist and Accountant, he and Chief Akintola Willliams became the doyens of Accountancy in Nigeria.  Dafinone’s illustrious spirit had to embrace other challenges – politics, publishing, business, real estate development, etc, and he excelled in all.

“Dafinone joined the late Chief Jonathan Odebiyi and the late Dr. Olusola Saraki, to form the three most influential Senators of the Second Repblic – authoritative, in debate, carriage and highly respected across all the political parties of that from 1979 to 1983.

“His Ceddi Plaza, Apapa, is a very visible and highly known Lagos landmark just as the Ceddi Plaza Abuja helps to define the federal capital city’s Central Business District. Not many people may remember that Dafinone owned the encyclopaedic “Who is Who in Nigeria” publication and also published the “Abuja Handbook” for several years”, he said.

  • Between James Ibori and Gbenga Daniel

SINCE his return to the country after his incarceration in the United Kingdom, Chief James Ibori, former governor of Delta State, would not leave any opportunity of integrating himself into the social and political circuits.

He was among the dignitaries that graced the wedding of the Senate President’s daughter, the lavish birthday of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, the wedding of Orji Uzor Kalu’s daughter, as well as the close-knit, but grand marriage ceremony of Vice President Osinbajo’s daughter.

In his usual past time, he showed up again at the private birthday bash of former Governor Daniel in his Lagos home last weekend. Both Ibori and Daniel are members of the People’s Democratic Party – as well as former governors on the platform of the political party in the same dispensation.

Ibori tasks Nigerians on future elections

A former Governor of Delta, Chief James Ibori, on Thursday urged Nigerians to take the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration seriously to enable them elect the right candidates during elections.

Ibori made the call during The Daily Independent Annual Thanksgiving service held at the company’s premises in Lagos.

He said that massive participation of the electorate in the exercise as well as voting of right candidates was the only way they could effect good leadership.

“You should hold your leaders accountable by going to register, and vote in the right leaders.

“You should know that your vote counts; times are changing, your voter card is your strength,” he said.

The ex-governor, while addressing members of The Daily Independent staff, urged them to speak the truth at all times and “be hardworking.”

“The business model for publishing a newspaper has changed; we need to change with it. You as journalists should be fearless because it is your duty to speak the truth to those in power,” he stated.

Also speaking at the event, the Lagos Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, urged Nigerians to always give thanks to God, no matter their situation.

    James Ibori’s new love

Since returning back to the country after his incarceration in the United Kingdom, the ex-Delta governor,James Ibori seems to have developed a deep love for partying.  He never shies from social engagement of any kind; with his spouse, Senami and they have rocking high profile shindig together.

These days’ events seem incomplete without the Iboris in attendance and society watchers are speaking in hush tones that it may be the Ogidigbodigbo of Africa’s new past time.

    WIKE visits Ibori in Oghara

In what has been described as parts of moves to position the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the crucial 2019 general elections, the Rivers state governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has joined the list of party leaders who have met with former Delta state governor, Chief James Ibori, at his Oghara country home.

Although details of what the two party leaders might have discussed were still kept in wraps as at the time of filing this report Saturday evening as access into the Ibori Villa in Ogharefe was restricted, especially to journalists, The Nation gathered that it was all about strengthening the PDP in the South-South for the upcoming elections.

An Oghara based source told The Nation that the Rivers state governor arrived Oghara in a chopper Saturday afternoon and moved on to the home of the former governor in a convoy of cars.

“You know that Ibori’s house is something of an off limit these days, especially to journalists, so I don’t think many people had access. For now it is difficult to know what the meeting was all about, as it was held behind closed doors, but I heard someone suggest it was all about how to prepare PDP for the next elections in the region”, a source said Saturday evening.

  • Delta: No bad blood between Ibori and Okowa

Delta: No bad blood between Ibori and Okowa

Sometimes the strength of a friendship is best measured by the number of people trying to ruin it through bad blood. If the foregoing is extended to the romance between Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the strongman of Delta politics, James Ibori, then their friendship is very strong indeed. Not a week passes without one plot or the other hatched to tear the two apart.

    Governor Ifeanyi Okowa

Since Ibori’s ‘triumphal’ return to the state early in the year, it has become apparent that the friendship between him and Okowa goes beyond a political marriage of convenience. Theirs is a bond forged in the fire of mutual hardship, having seen each other through trying times. Unsurprisingly, not everyone is happy about the strong bond between the two, hence the repeated attempts to destroy their relationship. The latest attempt is the gist making the rounds that Ibori and Okowa are no longer on talking terms.

Those in the know have since debunked it as a false alarm peddled by some individuals with evil motives.
