  • JCI donates books to pupils

    Junior Chamber International (JCI), Victoria Island (VI) chapter, has donated exercise books to pupils of Arch-Bishop Taylor Memorial Primary School and Kuramo Primary School, both in Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Its President Abimbola Owosina said the gesture was to encourage the young ones and equip them with moral values.

    He said JCI creates development opportunities for young people to make positive change in their environment.

    He urged the pupils to study hard and pray well to be successful in life.

    He told them that they can achieve anything they want to achieve in life, urging them to surround themselves with the right people.

    Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Vice-Chairman Olusegun Ogunbiyi, described the gesture as  wonderful, despite the economic challenges.

    He urged other organisations to emulate JCI, saying that such gesture would relief parents and pupils of burden.

    Ogunbiyi advised  the pupils to be focused, pleading with their parents to always monitor their activities.

    Head Teachers of the schools, Mr Salami Akeem and Mr Muibi Olaniran thanked JCI, saying the gesture would go a long way to ease learning.

  • JCI’s Brand Master Class mentors brand enthusiasts

    The yearly Brand Master Class (BMC) of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Eko Chapter has held with Chief Leo-Stan Nnamdi Eke, chairman, Zinnox Technologies Group, and Dr. Ken Onyeali Ikpe, managing director, Zenith Optimedia, as seminarians.

    The theme of the symposium was “Building a Nigerian global brand,” and both seasoned entrepreneurs gave insights on brand identity, positioning, market segmentation and brand character.

    JCI President, Mr. Funmi Ayodele, explained that the event was initiated to give a mentoring platforms to brand enthusiasts and emerging entrepreneurs.

    He confirmed that both speakers agreed to take up part of the participants for long-term mentoring to build local brands that would go global. The Project Team Lead, Mr. Sherif Ibrahim, added: “The project is being held for the seventh year and impacts are being recorded. We have participants who attended two years ago and they have results to show.”

    A participant, Precious-Gift Ajudie, said she was excited about attending the symposium as it had introduced her to branding by “taking a position that relates with a specific customer segment in such a way that the product is designed to appeal to the target customers”.

     

  • JCI trains Ibadan school prefects

    The Junior Chambers International, (JCI) Ibadan has trained secondary school pupils on leadership potentials in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

    The thrust, according to the organiser, was to equip participants who cut across 11 local government areas of the state, to replicate leadership values in their contemporaries.

    In his address at Alayande school of Science, Ibadan venue of the event, President of JCI, Olawale Bakare, said the maiden edition of the program was tagged: ‘Muyiwa Bamgbose Academy’ to honour former (JCI) president Mr. Muyiwa Bamgbose, for his landmark achievement in education development.

    According to him, JCI handpicked prefects from four secondary schools in the aforementioned councils to make them socially responsible and create in them awareness of societal problems, needs and how to solve them.

    He said JCI would educate participants on ‘inclusive education’ one of the millennium goals, and through that make them understand education as a problem solving tool in their respective schools.

    Corroborating him, the coordinator of the programme, Sanmi Abiodun, said JCI intended the prefects to have positive impact on their fellow school mates by imparting knowledge and behavioral change in them and thus reshaping their future.

    Sanmi, who said the programme was free added: “Our aim is to make them better people so that they’ll be better leaders of tomorrow by being prepared for the tasks ahead them”.

    One of the participants, Thomas Theresa, said the programme has taught her how to picture what she wants to become in future as well as leadership potential to harness and achieve her goals in life.

    In his opinion Olaitan Samuel another participant, said the training has taught him how to imagine his goals and actualise them. With the change agenda of the present government, Olaitan is optimistic the training would inspire in him and others the kind of change required of a worthy leader.

    Alakija honoured at JCI 100th anniversary

    Africa’s second richest woman and philanthropist, Folorunsho Alakija, has been honoured for her outstanding service to humanity at the Junior Chamber International (JCI) 100th anniversary in Kanazawa, Japan.

    The businesswoman also recently bagged a honorary doctorate degree of Humanities from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom at the institution’s 21st convocation ceremony.

    With presence in 123 countries around the world and 200,000 active members, the JCI, a membership-based, non-profit organisation of young active citizens, ranks as the largest young people organisation in the world.

    In Nigeria, the JCI has 51 professional chapters spread across various cities in the country and institutional chapters in 60 universities, polytechnics and colleges of Education.

    Meanwhile for the first time, a Nigerian, Pascal Obinna Dike, has emerged the 2016 JCI World President.

    JCI celebrates 10 outstanding young persons

    Last week, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Nigeria honoured young entrepreneurs in Lagos, Daniel Essiet reports.

    Junior Chamber International (JCI) Nigeria celebrated young business owners and social entrepreneurs from all over the country at a ceremony in Victoria Island, Lagos at the weekend.

    The crème de la crème gathered, bringing positive role models, to celebrate those devoted to enhancing change and economic inclusion.

    This year’s  Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) were Adebola Olomo, Oresanwo Lolade, Odjenima Atinuke, Araba Steven Omogbolahan, Uyi-Aivinhenyo Patricia, AbdulkadirMukhtar, Onitiju Ibukun, Akintayo Stephen, Steve Harris and Olawale Rotimi.

    According to the organisers, out of 130 nominations received, 20 were selected. They were further screened  by a panel. The public then voted for the final 10.

    The process was anchored by the JCI’s TOYP Team, panel and a team from the international auditing firm – KPMG

    JCI’s National President, Seun Osikalu, said the group was delighted by the quality of persons  chosen for the awards. He said  TOYP, a global initiative which is being replicated in Nigeria, concentrates on formally recognising young people who are making waves in their chosen fields and creating positive impact on other people, their community and the society at large.

    The recognitions, according to him, are to motivate other young people and encourage them in their bid to be socially responsible leaders. However, a diverse and vibrant array of established entrepreneurs featured in the list, highlighting the strength and tenacity of modern entrepreneurship.

    One outstanding entrepreneur was Chief Operating Officer of Solous MRF Limited and West Africa Energy, Mrs Lolade Oresanwo,  who has done much to help businesses reduce and recycle a wastes. Her company has a facility that  picks solid wastes, such as  milk cans, soft drink cans and sort them through for recoverable purpose. The firm, WestAfricaENRG, operates the first materials recovery facility in Nigeria with a focus on zero waste to landfill across the country.

    The other is Olomo Adebola,  chief executive officer, Deefrent Limited. Trained as a lawyer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Olomo has garnered over 13 years’experience in Communications – in areas, such as marketing, technology, public relations and business strategy.

    Her work at MTN Nigeria won her several awards, including the much-coveted ‘Star Performance’ Award  for Nigeria and WECA (West and Central Africa) in her first year. This earned her a transfer to work with MTN Group, South Africa where she covered various aspects of communications and majored on E-Communications Consultant, Group-wide.

    However, Adebola’s most impressive career move happened in 2010, when she became the helmsman at Deefrent Limited. With her experience and impactful work, she has taken Deefrent from zero to over 100 clients in just five years.

    One  of the  awardess was Stephen Akintayo. An inspirational speaker and entrepreneur, he is the Chief Executive Officer, Gtext Media and Investment Limited, a leading firm in Nigeria, whose services span digital marketing, website design, bulk sms, online advertising, Media, e-commerce, real estate, Consulting and a host of other services.

    Stephen, popularly called Pastor Stephen, is the founder of Omonaija, an online radio station in Lagos.

    His mentorship has helped thousands of people, including graduates and undergraduates in business as well as in relationships. He is also the Founder and President of Infinity Foundation, an indigenous non-governmental organisation that has assisted over 2,000 orphans and vulnerable children, and has also partnered with 22 orphanage homes.

    One of the awardees, Dr Abdulkadir Mukhtar,  said  JCI  has done well to celebrate those unsung heroes who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve the lives of others in the communities around them.

    He  called on young people to take leadership roles in addressing the concerns of the economy and act as pioneers in transformation.

    Designed to highlight the country’s most inspirational and selfless people, the awards have attracted a growing list of corporate  supporters.

    TOYP Chairperson, Adetola Juyitan, said: “This year’s TOYP is coming with an unprecedented class, which is reflected through the quality of shortlisted nominees, the quality of the judges, the audit process managed by KPMG, the organisation of the grand finale of the event, among other things.”

    According to her, “Junior Chamber International, Nigeria has been participating at the international level over the years, and beyond hosting the edition, we will be taking advantage of the platform of this year’s programme to re-reinforce the presence of JCI in Nigeria.”

    She urged young people to contribute to the economy.

    Since 1983, JCI has honoured nearly 300 individuals across 57 countries.

    The criteria for recognition is that a Nigerian must be above 18, but less than 40, and must have excelled in their fields.

     

  • JCI fetes Asia business community

    The Junior Chamber International Nigeria (JCIN) has concluded plans to host a business forum – ‘Let’s go to Asia’ on Setember 27, at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos.

    Let’s go to Asia is a prelude to the centenary anniversary of JCI holding in Kanazawa, Japan.

    The forum is offers a platform of opportunities to promote business relationships between young Nigerian business leaders and Asian companies.

    On the initiative, JCIN National President Mr Seun Osikalu said: “Our members invest a lot of resources on their various travels around the world for JCI programmes and conferences. These events provide enormous opportunities for our members to establish lifelong relationships and we want our members and interested members of the public to take deliberate advantage of such opportunities. We have partnered with Asian trade and commercial missions in Nigeria to come sell their countries and they are excited at the prospects that the forum offers.”

    Also, the National Director of Business Affairs, Mr Jide Benson said: “We reckon that since a large delegation of our members will be attending the week-long world congress in Kanazawa Japan, which will be an opportunity for direct interaction with business organisations and people in the Asiatic regions – Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Phillipines, Malaysia, Japan and others – so we thought it fit to be equipped with the right information and knowledge before departure. The region, being the hub for manufacturing and production, has a lot to offer discerning business people.”

    The event is a fee for interested persons and is open to members and non members seeking opportunities to be tapped in Asia and JCI Nigeria is proud to see the need and take the lead.

    The Junior Chamber International is a world federation of  young (community  and business) leaders that provide development opportunities for active citizens to create positive change.

    Entrepreneurship is one of the ideals that the organisation promotes sand the LTGA is geared towards this area.

  • JCI wants credible polls

    The University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) has urged Nigerians to elect credible candidates into various political offices in the coming 2015 general elections.

    The group made the call at the 26th Annual Tunde Oshobi Public Forum  at the Conference Centre of the university. It had as theme: The Nigeria of our dream: 2015 elections as a case study.

    The JCI chapter President, Tolulope Ogunmuko, said the choice of the theme was to sensitise the people on the need to see their wellbeing through the election.

    The guest lecturer, Dr Fola Akinosun, an educationist, who is also the flag bearer of Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Oyo South Senatorial race, said Nigeria is endowed in human and natural resources and has capacity to be like China and the United States. He said the country’s greatness had been impeded by bad leadership and corruption.

    Akinosun said: “Nigeria of my dream is a society where leaders would lead with fear of God, where education would be compulsory and affordable, where employment will be for everyone, where judiciary is going to be independent and police will protect lives and property.”

    The senatorial candidate urged people to elect honest candidates in the elections.

    Odu’a, NMA campaign against Ebola

    Odu’a Investment Company Limited, in conjunction with the Oyo State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Junior Chamber International (JCI), has launched an awareness campaign on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

    The campaign began with a lecture by Oyo NMA Chairman, Dr Muideen Olatunji, at Cocoa House, Ibadan.

    In the lecture, titled: Ebola Virus Disease: Basic Clinical Syndrome, Care and Management, Olatunji listed some symptoms of the disease as fever, flu, sore throat, muscle pain, red eye, asthemia, rashes, diarrhoea, vomiting, among others.

    He said: “There have been more than 3,000 reported cases and over 1,600 deaths since the discovery of the Ebola virus. Nigerians should avoid direct contact with blood, dead bodies, fluids or cadavers. Also, aerosol spray, sexual transmission and percutaneous (through the skin) transmission can occur.

    “Wear personal protective equipment, manage patients in isolation, discourage traditional burial practices and practise barrier nursing techniques.”

    Odu’a’s Group Managing Director Adewale Raji said the campaign was aimed at increasing awareness on preventive measures.

     

     

     

    Raji, who was represented by the General Manager, Human Resources, Mr Abimbola Ilori, urged the workers and the public to always wash their hands, use sanitisers, avoid eating bush meat and touching or washing the dead.

     

  • JCI presents gifts to New Year babies

    JUNIOR Chambers International (JCI), Akure Chapter has donated gifts to the first, second and third babies that were born in 2014. The donations were made at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Ondo State.

    The first baby was given birth to at exactly 12:25am on January 1, 2014.

    The donation of gifts was done in conjunction with the office of the First Lady of Ondo State. The first lady, Her Excellency, Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Yemi Mahmud Fasanmi. They were received by the Matron of the Hospital, Mrs. S. M. Bosede. The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju was also present.

    While speaking on the idea behind the donations, the President, Junior Chambers International, Akure, Amb. Kunle Omowaye, said: “As part of community development and the belief by the Junior Chamber International that service to humanity is the best work of life, that is why we embarked on the 2014 annual baby of the year award ceremony.”

    Amb. Omowaye further commended the wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, for her gender-friendly programmes, especially for women in the state and he expressed readiness to partner in areas of need within the scope of JCI and the United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
