  • Judge’s absence stalls arraignment of alleged drug peddler

    Absence of Justice Maureen Onyetenu of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday stalled arraignment of a 25-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Biola Dele.

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) charged Dele with trafficking in four kilogrammes of cannabis sativa (hemp).

    Dele’s arraignment, slated for Tuesday, could not take place as Onyenetu was not available.

    The judge was said to be on another official assignment.

    According to the NDLEA counsel, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, Dele committed the offence on Dec. 4, 2018, at Marssy area of Lagos Island.

    Aernan alleged that the defendant engaged in the sale of the substance, in contravention of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    He noted that hemp was restricted along with cocaine and heroin, among other narcotics.

  • Man bags 50 months for drug trafficking

    A 38-year-old man, Ayo Ogunjobi, is to spend the next 50 months in prison for drug trafficking, a Federal High Court ruled in Lagos on Tuesday.

    Ogunjobi was sentenced after he pleaded guilty of trafficking in 1.1 kg of Cannabis (Hemp).

    The convict, who is unemployed, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a charge of drug trafficking before Justice Chuka Obiozor.

    Delivering his judgment, Obiozor pronounced the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to 50 months in jail, directing that the prison term should run from the date of his arrest.

    After his plea, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan of the NDLEA, reviewed the facts of the case before the court.

    Aernan tendered in evidence a written statement of the convict, the bulk of drug exhibit, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form, as well as remnants of the restricted substance.

    The court, accordingly, admitted the evidences as exhibits.

    The prosecution told the court that the convict committed the offence on Feb. 19.

    Aernan said the convict was arrested at Odonla Odoguyan in Ikorodu in Lagos State with 1.1kg of hemp.

    The offences contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    The convict had begged the court for mercy, asking for another chance to make amends and  change

    Federal High court jails Labourer, 23, for trafficking

    A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday, sentenced a 23-years-old Labourer, Musa Danjuma, to one year imprisonment, for trafficking in 350g of Cannabis Sativa, also known as `Hemp’.
    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Jan. 29, arraigned the convict on a one count charge of trafficking Hemp.
    Danjuma pleaded guilty to the charge.
    The prosecution said that Danjuma was arrested on Sept. 13, 2017, at Ajao Estate in Lagos, with 350kg of the narcotics.
    He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004
    The prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, after Danjuma’s plea of guilt, reviewed the facts of the case before the court and led one prosecution witness in evidence.
    He tendered in evidence, a written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form, and a bulk of the exhibit.
    Aernan, thereafter, closed the case for the prosecution, and urged the court to sentence the accused in accordance with section 356 (2) of the ACJA 2015, and based on evidences adduced.

    At the resumed hearing, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, found the accused guilty as charged and accordingly, convicted him.
    The convict, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded for mercy and asked the court to give him a second chance to make amend.
    Oguntoyinbo sentenced the convict to one year imprisonment and held that the sentence would commence from the date of his arrest.
    “The convict is hereby, sentenced to one year imprisonment, to be calculated from the date of his arrest.
    “The drug exhibits are to be returned to the NDLEA for destruction,” she held.

    Court jails labourer for trafficking cannabis

    A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday, sentenced a 23-years-old labourer, Musa Danjuma, to one year imprisonment, for trafficking in 350g of Cannabis Sativa, also known as `Hemp’.

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ), on January 29, arraigned the convict on a one count charge of trafficking Hemp.

    Danjuma pleaded guilty to the charge.

    Man jailed 18 months for drug trafficking

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday  sentenced a 28-year-old man, Oluwaseun Olamilekan, to 18 months imprisonment, for allegedly trafficking in cannabis sativa (Indian-hemp).

    In his judgment at the resumed hearing, Justice Ayokunle Faji, said the imprisonment would begin from the date of his arrest.

    He ordered that the drug exhibits to be returned to the NDLEA for destruction.

    The convict had begged for leniency and promised to turn a new leaf.

    Olamilekan was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one count charge of trafficking in narcotic substance.

    He had earlier been arraigned before the court on Sept. 8, 2017 when he pleaded guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, had told the court that the convict was arrested on Aug. 10, 2017 at Kasimu Street in Agege, Lagos, with 3.1kilogrames of narcotics.

    Aernan tendered some documents in evidence as well as some remnant of the narcotic substance.

    He said the offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Thursday  sentenced a 30- year-old man, Abubakar Nasir, to  two years imprisonment for drug trafficking.

    The unemployed convict who was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a count charge of dealing in narcotics, had pleaded guilty.

    He begged the court to temper justice with mercy and give him another chance and promised to be a better person in life, if given the opportunity.

    In her judgment, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, found the defendant guilty as charged and accordingly convicted him.

    She, consequently, sentenced him to two years imprisonment, beginning from the date of his arrest.

    He said that about 300 grammes of cannabis sativa known as Indian hemp was recovered from the convict and he was arrested and subsequently charged to court.

    He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act Cap. 30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    Man jailed five years for selling cocaine

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, sentenced one Micheal Adebowale, to five years imprisonment for selling cocaine.

    Adebowale was charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge bordering on drug trafficking.

    In the charge, the convict was said to have been arrested on July 6, at Oniru in Lekki Lagos, where he engaged in the sale and distribution of cocaine.

    Adebowale pleaded guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, said that following a tip off, the convict was arrested; adding that 0.7g of cocaine was recovered from him.

    Aernan tendered a written statement of the convict, a request for scientific aid form and a drug analysis form as evidence before the court.

    He also tendered the remnant of the narcotic substances that the convict unlawfully trafficked.

    The pieces of evidence were admitted by the court and marked as exhibits.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 11 of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    He then urged the court to convict the accused accordingly.

    In his judgment, Justice Rilwan Aikawa found Adebowale guilty of the offence as charged and sentenced him to five years imprisonment, saying that the sentence should begin from the date of the arrest.

    Shortly before the sentence, the convict had pleaded for leniency, claiming to be a first offender and prayed the court to give him second chance and promised to be a changed person.

    Barrow pusher to spend 12 months in jail for dealing in Indian Hemp

    The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 30-year-old wheel barrow pusher, Ibrahim Suraja to 12 months imprisonment for peddling 500g of Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp).

    Suraja was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for dealing suspected to be in Indian hemp, had pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him.

    After his plea, the prosecution counsel, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case before the court and urged that Suraja should be convicted.

    Aernan tendered in evidence, a written confessional statement of the convict, a scientific aid form, a test analysis form, and the seized Indian hemp.

    The court admitted and marked the pieces of evidence as exhibits.

    In her judgment, Justice Rabiu Shagari, found the convict guilty of the offence as charged and sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, beginning from the date of his arrest.

    In the charge, the prosecution said that the convict committed the offence on May 12, at a filling station in Ikeja, Lagos.

    Aernan said that the convict was arrested with 500g of Indian hemp, a restricted narcotic similar to heroine LSD (one of the most potent, mood-changing chemicals).

    The prosecution counsel said that the narcotic was seized from the convict, arrested and charged to court.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    During allocutus (plea for mercy) the convict, who was not represented by a lawyer, implored the court to show mercy on him.

    He promised to become a transformed person, if justice is tempered with mercy.

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a 48-year-old Mechanic, Tunde Oseni, to 24 months imprisonment for trafficking in Cocaine and Heroine.
