  • ‘Ondo, Ekiti political, cultural ties remain solid’

The cultural and political affinity between Ondo and Ekiti States will always be fortified.

The Ondo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ade Adetimehin made the observation at the weekend when he received a delegation of APC leaders from Ekiti State, who were on a thank-you visit, and led by the State Chairman, Chief Jide Awe.

According to a statement by the party’s spokesman, Alex Kalejaye ,the chairman noted that the support and efforts of Ondo State APC in Ekiti, during the campaigns, were informed by what the State chapter benefited from Ekiti, particularly,  the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in the past.

He said “In 2012, Fayemi was at the forefront of our governorship campaigns here in Ondo State. Though we lost that election but he was not deterred. Again in 2016, he presented himself a pillar to lean on till we emerged victorious”

Speaking earlier, Chief Awe, thanked leaders and all organs of the party in Ondo State, for what he termed massive support and encouragement given to them during their electioneering campaigns.

Awe said that though the Ekiti office was still basking in the euphoria of the electoral victory, the leaders considered it expedient to offer timely appreciation.

Awe said: “We are full of appreciation to the leaders and every member of APC in Ondo State for their support and encouragement. It is difficult to go to individuals for this, we are therefore using this corporate office as a means of contact to all members.

“It will be needless counting the number of ways through which you rendered assistance for us to get victory at the just concluded gubernatorial polls in our State.”

•Raises the alarm over plan to attack govt house, office
•Command spokesman: we have been fair to all parties

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Uyanna and his men of colluding with opposition parties to aid attacks on its members ahead next month’s poll.

The party equally raised the alarm over plans by the opposition parties to attack the Government House and the party secretariat with explosive devices.

Chairman of the party, Chief Jide Awe, while addressing journalists yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said: “If not for partisanship, they (the police) could not have been watching when a serving commissioner, Mrs. Ronke Okusanya, was being attacked by thugs in Efon Alaye on Sunday.

“The party has it on good authority that members of opposition were planning to detonate bomb at the Government House and also in our secretariat. We have to take extra caution. The police that would have dealt with the situation are partisan and this is highly unfortunate”.

The party chairman listed 14 instances in which members of the party were allegedly attacked by either Labour Party’s (LP) or People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) “thugs,” noting that in all instances, policemen were on hand, “but did not maintain open neutrality.”

According to Awe, the partisanship of the police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had worsened the situation for the APC.

The party chieftain also claimed that those who attacked Mrs. Okusanya were sponsored by a serving police commissioner, who he also accused of being “a strong supporter of Mr. Ayodele Fayose”.

His words: “We never loved to resort to self-help because we know the implications and this will not augur well for the nation even. If the police can not protect us, then we will resort to self-help and that will be sad. It is unfortunate that it is the Federal Government that has been backing them to do all these.

“Part of their plans is to announce the results of Ekiti election in Abuja. Ekiti election is a test case to what will happen in 2015. But we are determined to resist them and we shall ensure that this election is free and fair.”

The APC chairman also berated a governor in the Southwest for the violence in Ikere-Ekiti in which Labour Party (LP) members reportedly attacked those of APC during a mega rally organised by candidate of LP, Opeyemi Bamidele, in which one person was shot and several others injured.

But the command’s spokesperson, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who absolved the police of complicity, described APC’s statement as very unfortunate.

He said: “They are only trying to make the police the scapegoat and we will not tolerate that. We have been fair to all parties in the build up to the election but the politicians are behaving irresponsibly. So, rather than blame us, the APC must look inward and stop rubbishing the good work we are doing in Ekiti.

“The APC members are always the first to launch attacks based on our series of investigations and they are always the one to first blow the whistle that they are under attack”, Babayemi said.

APC registers over 720,000 members in Ekiti, Oyo

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State registered 226,527 people in its just concluded membership registration.

The Interim Chairman, Chief Jide Awe, said despite provocations from the opposition, the exercise was successful.

He thanked the people for coming out to register and urged intending members to register at their wards, adding that the registration was “continuous.”

Awe, who earlier forecasted that the party would register 100,000 members, said he based his earlier permutation on a 100 per polling unit.

He said the large turn out showed that the people have confidence in the APC and the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration.

    A breakdown of the figures, according to local governments, is as follows: Ado, 30,070; Oye, 23,130; Ekiti Southwest, 19,972; Ijero, 16,379; Ikole, 16,294; Ekiti West, 16,020; Irepodun/Ifelodun, 15,389; Ido/Osi, 13,100; Gbonyin, 12, 656; Moba, 11,028; Ikere, 10,568; Ekiti East, 10,070; Ise /Orun, 9,586; Efon, 8,594; Emure, 8,156 and Ilejemeje, 5,515.

Awe said the February 12 closing date announced by the party was intended to assess the turnout, adding that the registration continues in wards.

He debunked the allegation that civil servants were compelled to register as members of the party.

In Oyo State, the party registered over 500,000 members.

A source said the party was still collating data on the number of people registered in each local government.

  • Ekiti APC commences registration

    Ekiti APC commences registration

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ekiti State has fixed next Wednesday for the commencement of the registration of members.

The exercise is expected to last five days.

Disclosing this in an interaction with journalists in Ado-Ekiti, capital of the state, the interim Chairman of the party, Chief Jide Awe, said the exercise would hold in all 2,190 polling units across the 16 councils of the State.

Awe appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure proper and timely updating of the voters’ register to avoid hiccups, which marred the election in Anambra state.

He added that the updated voters’ register must also be made available to the public “at least two weeks before the election day”, noting that it would be necessary to do a delimitation of the voting units to include a list of the new areas which had just opened up in the State since the time of the last election.

The APC chair assured that no member of the party would be excluded in the registration for whatever excuse.

Insisting that APC was the most democratic in its internal democracy culture in the country, Awe maintained that the decision to field Governor Kayode Fayemi as its flag bearer in the July elections “is the clear pass mark he (the Governor) has scored in all that he has promised the people of the State through his 8 Point Agenda.”

Awe added: “This is because we were all impressed by what the Governor has done. The best for justice and for the party is to field Fayemi for another term as Governor.

“I want to say emphatically that a party may adopt a candidate without primary. All we need to do is to follow due process and at the appropriate time we will do the official affirmation of his candidature and sent to INEC for listing”.

  • Fayemi’ll break one-term jinx, says Awe

The Acting Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Chief Jide Awe, has said the state Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi will get a second term.

Chief Awe, who spoke at the launch of the Ekiti West Social Security Scheme in Aramoko- Ekiti, said the Governor Fayemi has achieved “what naturally qualifies him for a second term as Ekiti governor”.

Awe said: “ I see no reason a government whose approach to delivering democracy dividends to our people will not be allowed to continue; if it is a whammy that there is no governor that will rule Ekiti two times ‘we are ready to break it’.”

Lauding the initiative of the Caretaker Chairman of the local government, Pastor Ropo Famibode, the APC chief explained that the initiative would complement the efforts of Governor Fayemi.

In his welcome address, Pastor Famubode said, “The initiative is to complement the social security scheme of the state governor.”

He said the 150 people who benefited from the scheme, were selected from the wards in the local government without recourse to their social, religious, or political affiliation, but on the basis that they are above 65, are indigents whose social welfare needed attention and have not benefitted from the state social security scheme.

The caretaker chairman and former permanent secretary of ministry of labour, who reiterate Fayemi’s commitment to improving the lives of Ekiti people, pleaded for the continuous support of the people for his administration.

An octogenarian, Mrs Esther Adetunji, a beneficiary of the scheme, described the gesture as one that would, to a long extent, alleviate their sufferings by enabling them to meet some of their basic needs.

Other beneficiaries also pleaded their un alloyed loyalty and support to governor Fayemi’s administration.

The social scheme, which was kicked off by Awe, was witnessed by many dignitaries, including the Alara of Aramoko; Oba Adegoke Olu Adeyemi.
