  • I’ll complete ongoing projects before handover – Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State late on Wednesday allayed the fears of the residents of the state over ongoing projects.

He said that his administration was making concerted efforts to complete many of them before May 29 when its tenure would end.

Ambode gave the assurance during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in parts of the state.

The governor said the good thing about continuity in governance which he had been preaching, is that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had signed on to the projects.

“I know that the feedback we are getting is that Lagosians are worried whether some of our critical projects will be delivered before we leave office.

“We want to assure them that with what we have had from the contractors and the inspection we have done today, these projects will be completed.

“And some of them if they are not completed, Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu will complete them on assumption of office.

“That is the whole essence of governance of continuity that we are preaching.

“That is why we believe strongly that he will not only complete them but also escalate them to higher level and that is the whole idea about APC,” Ambode said.

He said that plans had been firmed up to roll out the Bus Reform Project of the State Government in March with 820 high and medium capacity buses.

He said the initiative was basically designed to inject 5,000 buses, modern terminals, facilitate ease of mobility for residents and also rev-up Lagos economy, among others.

Ambode inspected the assembly plant at Awoyaya in Ibeju-Lekki area of the state which also served as the temporary holding bay for 500 out of the 820 buses.

He said that he was optimism that the buses would be rolled out after the general elections.

He said the next phase of the project would be to assemble the buses in Lagos.

    “This is an assembly plant.

“The dream is that beyond the procurement of 820 buses by the government, the next set of buses in the vision should be assembled in Lagos:  in this assembly plant and in another one in Epe,’’ he said.

The governor and his team also inspected other projects that include: the Oshodi Transport Interchange which is 85 per cent completed.

The team also inspected the bus depots at Oshodi, Yaba and Oyingbo to be ready by March.

The Annual Musical Youth Fiesta organised by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central District) was held yesterday at the Expo Centre of the Eko Hotels and Suites on Victoria Island, Lagos.

About 5,000 youths were expected, but more turned out.

Youths from various church denominations and musical groups displayed their skills at the four-hour fiesta.

Guests, including the wife of the Lagos State governor, Dame Abimbola Fashola; her Ogun State counterpart, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun; former Lagos State Deputy Governor Mrs. Sarah Sosan; the Asoju Oba of Lagos, Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas; Dr. Stella Okoli and Lagos State House of Assembly Deputy Leader Lola Akande, took to the dance floor as the youths sang melodious songs.

Senator Tinubu said: “I thank God for taking us this far. The vision given to me in 2011 was to bring about 5,000 youths together under one roof to entertain people. In 2011, the theme was ‘One church’; 2012 was ‘Dare to be like Joseph’; this year’s theme is ‘The Generation that seeks Him’.

“All we offer as an organisation will not have been possible without the Lord, who blessed us with many individuals and corporate bodies, who have partnered us. Be blessed by all God provides for you in this fiesta and, please, go out there and transform your community. Remember that your life is incomplete until you are committed to the community. Do this with the fear of God and our world will be better for it.”

She wished the people a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Dame Fashola, who described Senator Tinubu as ‘Grandma of the state’, saluted her efforts to give youths a sense of belonging.

She urged youths to use the opportunity presented at the fiesta to showcase their talents.

According to her, the gathering was to fellowship with one another and discover talents.

“We all belong to different denominations but we have come here to praise God. The generation that seeks Him will have all the good things of life,” she added.

Mrs. Amosun said: “It is astonishing to see the amount of talents being showcased here. I saw the angelic performance of these youth and marveled. No doubt, this platform provides an opportunity for you all to be noticed outside this hall.”

The performances that thrilled the gathering included those of the Enoch Peter-led Enoch and Group band; the Christ Apostolic Church (C.A.C.), Ebute Meta choir; Oluwatobi Befo-led Tobi Sax; the Acapella Band and the Mountain of Fire (MFM) Guitar choir.

Chairman of the Organising Commitee Jide Sanwo-Olu thanked those who supported the fiesta.

Sanwo-Olu, a former Lagos commissioner for Establishment, said: “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. Your selfless contributions have made this event and its impact in the lives of youths possible.

“We recognise and acknowledge with gratitude the talents displayed by our participating choirs, drama groups, bands and individuals, who performed beautifully this (yesterday) afternoon. May the joy you bring us be multiplied in your lives.

“I believe the success and future of nations lie in the hands of today’s youths. And if young people have strong values, the best education, good health, right priorities and full sincerity, then we can say that the future is bright.

“We say a big thank you to all our young people for coming and being a major part of the fiesta. May your futures be great, bringing pride to your parents, generation and the entire nation.”
