Jigawa police step up surveillance, urge calm amid nationwide protest

The Jigawa state police command has intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering as part of efforts to strengthen security and prevent any unrest amid the ongoing nationwide protest by the Take-It-Back Movement.

Speaking with The Nation in Dutse, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shi’isu Adam, said the police have ramped up operations to ensure continued peace and security across the state.

“The Jigawa State Police Command is fully active and has expanded surveillance and intelligence gathering to maintain peace and protect lives and property,” SP Adam stated.

He added that the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Tijjani Abdullahi, has urged residents to remain calm and go about their daily activities without fear, assuring them of the Command’s commitment to their safety.

The police spokesman further noted that the Commissioner has particularly advised youths to shun any incitement by individuals or groups calling for actions that could threaten the peace and security of the state and the country at large.

“In addition to regular patrols, we have increased the deployment of State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) operatives to monitor public spaces and gather intelligence. This is a proactive measure to sustain Jigawa’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country,” he explained.

SP Adam reaffirmed that the police, in collaboration with sister security agencies, remain fully prepared to carry out their constitutional duty of protecting lives and property.

He also appealed to the public to support the police by reporting any suspicious activities that could disrupt the state’s peace.

Meanwhile, Comrade Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, Executive Director of the Civil Society Coalition on Security, Peace, and Conflict Resolution, distanced his organisation from the protest, stating there is no clear or justified reason for it.

Comrade Muhammad Musbahu Basirka said people, especially in Jigawa and other northern states, had got lessons from the last protest held in August, where lives and properties were lost without achieving anything.

He alleged: “The protest is organized by some people with intentions of getting money and recognition, not for the better lives of the mercies and national interest.

“The organisers mostly instigate some youth, while remain in hotels watching the situation waiting to be call for negotiations and if it got out of hand they will escape to a hide places.

Basirka called on the people and youth in particular to ignore, reject, and not participate in the protest, as it has no defined reason for it.
