“It will be difficult to find words that amply capture the true essence of what Dr. Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo represents. Your life is a living proof that the true value of existence is selfless service.

“Nothing endears one to his people than selfless service. That is what you epitomise. The men and women gathered here today to celebrate you is a reflection of that selfless service that you have provided for the people of Enugu State and Nigeria.

“Today, we celebrate an extraordinary journey. We celebrate 85 years of impactful life.

“As Governor at 39 years, you left bold legacies that are still evident today. As a Minister of Youth and Sport, your record remains unbeatable; and it’s still a heartwarming reference point in this country. As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, you were an epitome of courage and patriotism. We are indeed very proud of you.

“You are a priceless gift to humanity and to Enugu State and indeed our dear country. We are so blessed to have you. You have also provided a shoulder on which countless leaders stand on. You are a charismatic, yet unassuming leader; a man of all seasons,” the Governor stated.

He wished him many happy returns in sound health and cherished moments so that the new generation of leaders could continue to benefit from his fatherly counsel and wealth of experience.

Nwobodo enjoined leaders to utilise the opportunities God had given to them to work for the people, citing the Mbah example in Enugu State.

“Today, Peter (Mbah) is a success. Whether anybody likes it or not. He is a success because the results speak for him. Whatever he is in Enugu today was God’s design from time. God gave it to him. God inspires all that he is doing in Enugu today.

“Governor Mbah also listens. He really does. I suggested something to him not long ago. He reflected on it and told me that he would do it. Today, he is already doing it. That is how your know a leader that would go far,” the elder statesman said.

While thanking the governor for organising a state event to mark his birthday, Nwobodo said that Mbah had underscored the need to celebrate people while they are alive.

“I did not expect an elaborate celebration as this. But the governor insisted on celebrating me so well. He maintained that it was better to celebrate people when they are alive, to say all the beautiful things to their hearing. So, Governor, I thank you for this show of love and thank all of you, who came out in your numbers to celebrate me,” he added.

  • Nnamani, Nwobodo, others vow to resist PDP’s proxy candidate

Former Senate President , Chief Ken Nnamani and former governor of old Anambra state Senator Jim Nwobodo, have vowed to resist any attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to  impose erstwhile governor of the state, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, by proxy as candidate of the party for Enugu East senatorial district in the 2019 general election.

Speaking during the official flag off of the campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the district, Prince Lawrence Eze, in Enugu, Senator Nnamani, said the action of the PDP is a clear violation of the electoral act and nation’s constitution, and capable of  sending  those involved to prison.

Former Governor Nnamani, who is currently residing in the United States of  America , was declared winner of the recent  controversial PDP primary election, which the incumbent senator representing the zone, Gilbert Nnaji is presently  challenging in court over alleged manipulation.

The former Senate president, who is a chieftain of the APC in Enugu state,  wondered how someone who is in America could be declared winner of an election he did not participate in, adding that “Chimaroke Nnamani did not swear affidavit because such sensitive document cannot be sworn by proxy, yet some people went behind to declare him winner of the PDP primary.

“I know that there is no law in our land authorizing someone to swear affidavit for another person, am saying this because those who perpetrated this fraud may be matching to the prison.

“This action shows that the PDP impunity is still rearing its ugly head in Enugu East senatorial zone. Our political process in the country as well as the zone are on trial. We are going to resist this undemocratic act, because am an interested party in the matter.

“We cannot have a senator by proxy, warning that if not properly handled, the development is capable of igniting political crisis in the senatorial district.

“I’m yet to know why PDP chose to commit such high level of impunity in my own senatorial district. As much as we know,Chimaroke was not seen anywhere. He is still outside the country in his sick bed. Even if somebody filled the forms for him in proxy. The electoral law demands he must swear the court affidavits by himself. The conspirators might go to prison.”

Chief Nwobodo, in his remarks at the event, described the fronting of ex Governor  Nnamani as candidate of  PDP  as a great fraud which they must all join hands to  resist at all cost.

The former senate president and Nwobodo, hail from Enugu East senatorial district and at different times represented the zone in the red chambers of the nations National Assembly NASS.

Nwobodo, and Nnamani,  who had during the event endorsed the APC flag bearer, , boasted that he (Prince Eze), is likely to be the only candidate for Enugu East senatorial election and pleaded to be joined in the suit to seek ex Governor Chimaroke Nnamani’s disqualification from the contest.

Nwobodo, agreed with all that  Senator Nnamani, said and urged the electorate in the zone to “vote for Prince Lawrence Eze as the next senator of Enugu East senatorial district, just as he applauded  the APC candidate who has been using  his personal resources to  provide various social  amenities for his people, including construction of Asphalted roads in many communities .”

Prince Eze in his speech, had assured the people of the district that if given the mandate to serve, he would protect the interest of the entire people of the zone, adding that he will also make their empowerment and responsible leadership his watch word.

“I want to thank all  our leaders  and supporters here present, for your for your continued encouragement, and assure you that I will not disappoint your if vote into office.

  • Adequate funding, solution to falling education standard – ex-ASUU president

A former National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Dipo Fashina, says adequate funding remains the solution to falling education standard in Nigerian universities.

Fashina stated this in a lecture entitled ‘Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Funding and Academic Standard’ he delivered at the 8th Convocation lecture series of Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State on Thursday.

He noted that the present crisis in the system started with the introduction of an “individualistic socio-philosophical idealism” which harped on the privatization of the education sector.

According to him, the World Bank’s Structural Adjustment Programme treated the education sector in Nigeria as a market.

“The promotion of private universities had led to the abandonment of hostel projects, road network, accommodation, electricity and water projects in public universities.

“The Nigerian University system is sick; many of these universities are worse than others.”

The former ASUU president noted that the problem of funding had been politicised, adding that the lack of allocation for capital development had adversely affected many public universities.

He cited Ebonyi State University, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam and Enugu State University of Technology as examples.

“For instance, no capital allocation was released to Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, from 2012 to 2016 and Enugu State University of Technology from 2012 to 2015.

“You do not develop a university by only paying workers but by releasing allocations for projects.

“The funding of state universities is useless and those in position to advice the politicians have failed to call them to order.”

While noting that researches in universities had dropped with emphasis on text book knowledge, Fashina said it was the task of students and lecturers to prevail on political leaders to fund research projects.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, commended Fashina for delivering the lecture.

Okafor expressed the hope that the lecture would give advantage to university administration in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convocation proper will hold on Friday at the Igbariam campus, where Chief Jim Nwobodo, Prof. Kingsley Muoghalu and Mr Chike Onyejekwe will receive honorary degrees.

    Nwobodo re-marries in Catholic Church

Just Friday, former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo dumped his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

And Saturday he completed another defection by dumping the Anglican Communion for the Catholic Church.

He re-wedded his many years heartthrob, Patricia in the Catholic Church. He had wedded her in the Anglican Communion in the early 80s when the late Abubakar Rimi performed the duties of best man.

Nwobodo, hitherto, was a staunch Anglican. He single handedly built the multi-million naira St. Mathew’s Anglican Church in his hometown, Amechi, Awkunanaw in the 70s.

He fell out with the leadership of the Anglican Communion when his son, Ifeanyi died‎. The burial site of his son generated a big controversy.

This pitched the former governor who insisted that the his son would not be buried with his expanse compound but be buried in a land close to the compound.

  • Arms deal: Nwobodo denies receiving N100m from Yuguda

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Senator Jim Nwobodo, has denied receiving N100million from a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, John Okoreni, he said the reports that he got the money from the former minister were unfounded.

Nwobodo said he was the Chairman of the Contact Committee of the PDP Presidential Campaign for the Southeast, overseeing Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.

He said the only fund received by the committee for its work was N100million from PDP’s National Chairman, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu.

The money, he said, was for logistics, travelling and mobilisation of party members in the zone for the presidential election.

“The fund was properly disbursed to the states and dully signed by members of the committee for each state and accounted for to the party. At no time did Senator Nwobodo receive money from any person other than the then National Chairman of the party.

“It would be unusual for Senator Nwobodo and other members of his committee to query the source of campaign fund coming from the National Chairman of his party for official functions and purposes.

“This statement is meant to put the record straight and correct the impression making round some media on the alleged distribution of money by Bashir Yuguda as it concerns Senator Nwobodo,” the statement said.

Unpaid rent: Court orders Nwobodo’s eviction from Abuja home

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ordered former Anambra State Governor, Chief Jim Nwobodo, to vacate a mansion he lives in the highbrow Maitama District, Abuja, over unpaid rent.

Justice S. B. Belgore gave the order upon finding that Nwobodo had defaulted in paying rent and refused to relinquish possession of the property at the expiration of his tenancy.

The judge also ordered the ex-governor to relinquish the property to the owner, Adin-Miles International Limited.

The property, a six bedroom mansion with one bedroom guest chalet and two rooms’ boys quarters, is located at 24 Ona Crescent, Plot 768 Cadastral Zone A5, Maitama Abuja.

When Nwobodo refused to pay his rent, the landlord hired a lawyer, Obinna Ajoku, to evict him from the building.

When all overtures to Nwobodo failed, Ajoku filed a case against him at the Abuja High Court.

Adin Miles claimed four reliefs against Nwobodo, including that he should deliver vacant possession of the property, that he be ordered to pay N11 million as rent arrears and an order for Nwobodo to renovate the premises or pay N3 million only to enable the plaintiff renovate the premises.

Nwobodo later filed a counter claim, arguing that while the property was offered for sale, he expressed intention to buy it, but did not make any payment because the plaintiff allegedly induced his landlord to sell the property to it and consequently, the landlord sold the house to the plaintiff.

Justice Belgore, in a judgment he delivered on March 3, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, granted all the plaintiff’s reliefs.

The judge ordered Nwobodo to pay N11 million as arrears of the rent on the premises from June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2011.

    Re-unite Nigeria, Nwobodo urges Buhari

Former Governor of Old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo has congratulated President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on his landslide victory in the presidential election.

Nwobodo, a former chairman of the Governors’ Forum during the 2nd Republic, also congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan for his sportsmanship in conceding defeat.

In a statement issued in Enugu Wednesday, Nwobodo assured Buhari that the Igbos would support and cooperate with him and his government in moving Nigeria forward, “in spite of the way the Igbo voted.”

He appealed to Buhari to quickly reunite Nigerians, as the voting pattern in the last election showed a great divide across ethnic and religious divide.

“The campaigns and elections are over and every Nigerian irrespective of tribe, tongue and religion, would very soon become your responsibility,” Nwobodo stated.

  • Confab: Do traditional rulers deserve constitutional roles?

Confab: Do traditional rulers deserve constitutional roles?

In this piece, Okey Nnamani examines the limited role of trational rulers and how the institution can be strengthened to play complimentary roles governance.

Many Nigerians have been agitating for constitutional roles for traditional rulers. They point out that the monarchs are critical to the progress of their states. They make reference to Imo State, where the institution is perceived as a semblance of the fourth tier of government. though with flaws.

If democracy had grown in Nigeria, there would have been a grassroots government headed by the royal fathers. Conversely, some have also argued that, given the enormity of respect and peculiar responsibilities performed by the traditional institution, they deserve definite constitutional roles in the polity.

However, others have argued that the royal fathers should be shielded from trivial matters, especially  those that tend to be divisive or sectional, and that royal stools should be kept sacrosanct while the occupants should strive at all times to live above board. Every act capable of lowering their esteem should be avoided.

In the olden days, the only people that were known not to be blemish in any aspect were the traditional rulers. Their wisdom and technocracy in conflict resolution and enforcement of laws that promoted peace and good neighborliness were admired and celebrated. They were aptly described as reservoirs of wisdom. They offered good advice and moulded character. Considering their grassroots orientation, they represented the true reflections of the people. Both civilian and military administrations appreciated their strategic roles in nation building. Heads of Governments and visiting Heads of States paid them homage, apparently because they were completely detached from partisanship and sectionalism.

During the phantom coup trial in the days of the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, traditional rulers were transported to the seat of power to take a look at the purported video tape of the incident. The aim was to convince them that, indeed, there was a plot and an attempt to forcefully topple the government. The monarchs were viewed as the custodians of truth. Over time, it has become a practice for their opinions to be sought before any crucial decision is taken.

Borrowing a leaf from the Unites States of America, former Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani introduced the ‘Community County Council’, which was established in all the autonomous communities in the state. Frank Nweke (Jnr) was the Coordinator and it was visibly impactful as it fast-tracked developments in the rural areas. For either lack of political will or otherwise, the initiative could not be sustained beyond Nnamani’s tenure. But, it was laudable.

His successor, Governor Sullivan Chime, has also ensured every community has a traditional ruler. He went further to make them relatively comfortable. Also, he kept harping on their impartiality and non-partisanship. They are to con

tribute to governance by giving advice and maintaining peace in their domains. The governor has increased the welfare package for traditional rulers. But, the ovation was short lived.

The events that followed showed that those largesse were merely Greek gifts. Heavy strings were attached. Among others, they must become very partisan at the appropriate time. They must be used as vehicles to drive the petty and informal interests of their benefactor and his favoured team. Failure to do so would cost them their staffs of office and the government vehicles they have in their possessions. Those whose children, spouses and relatives are in government or enjoying government patronage would be victimised. The riot acts were read gradually and their emotions were systematically manipulated. For instance, nobody can contemplate the grim prospects of deposed royal fathers and sudden loss of pre-eminence.

When the governor unfolded his plan to retire many elders and contemporaries in Enugu State politics, he rhetorically informed the traditional rulers that the pay-back-time had finally come.Any suspected or confirmed dissenting voice must be ruthlessly dealt with.

Four traditional rulers are today having their powers and authorities being questioned by the government. Their offence: they openly associated with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, visited his house and acknowledged the developmental projects he attracted to their domains.

For fear of being visited with similar treatment, royal fathers in Enugu State are determined to play active politics. Majority are now state government contractors. This ignoble trend is more pronounced in Nkanu part of the state, which constitutes the Enugu-East Senatorial Zone where Ifeoma Nwobodo is scheming to replace Senator Gilbert Nnaji. On her entourage are council chairmen, monarchs and other party officials. Since the inauguration of the local council administration, no chairman has actually spent one full day in office. They always accompany Mrs. Nwobodo, who is on the political tour of the district, although she has not got the ticket.

Traditional rulers in Enugu State today, apart from attending party rallies, also accompany aspirants to political campaigns under duress. To underscore the extent of misplacement of priorities, these royal fathers have now joined the campaign that, whether he performs or not, any senator in that zone must do only one term. The implication therefore, is that, once it is your turn to become a senator, you do not need to offer anything, except seeking to settle yourself, knowing that whichever way, you will not return to the Senate. What a backward and counter-productive political ideology being championed only in Enugu State and in a zone that has produced the likes of Ken Nnamani, Jim NWobodo, Chimaroke Nnamani, Frank Nweke, Bart Nnaji, Ogbonnaya Onovo and a host of retired military officers. It is more disturbing that those that should speak the truth dispassionately are being used to rubber stamp this wicked falsehood aimed at destroying some people.

However, it is not in doubt that both Jim Nwobodo and Ken Nnamani had wonderful outings at the Senate, but Chimaroke Nnamani as the governor would not allow them to continue in office, due to the political maneuverings of the moment. He deployed state apparatus to frustrate them one after another for personal gain. His successor, Chime, used the same weapon on him. And now, Ifeoma Nwobodo, the de facto governor, is unleashing her arsenal to frustrate Senator Gilbert Nnaji. The traditional rulers who today are the praise-singers of Ifeoma Nwobodo were recently disgraced at a forum in the zone. Also, they did not see anything wrong in the way their son, Sunday Onyebuchi, the deputy governor, has been humiliated in the battle for the leadership of Nkanu Zone.

The freedom of the traditional rulers has been mortgaged. In all ramifications, their senses of morality and dignity are now being ridiculed, owing to their involvement in partisan politics. Are they not being conscious of the legacies they should leave for their children and loved ones? Is it merely for material gains that they brazenly desecrate the highly revered institution? Their self respects are now being sacrificed. In the nearest future, they shall be discredited. But then, for how long do they still need to walk this destructive road to realise that their birthrights have since been up for grabs? They should be reminded of the sanctity of the royal palaces of the old, except one is being made to believe that it is only in Enugu State that such absurdity obtains.

In conclusion, the Enugu State experience has greatly undermined the agitation for constitutional roles for the royal fathers, especially in the on-going national conference.
