Actor and Pastor Jimmy Odukoya has condemned the recent killings in Benue state, describing them as a “genocide” rather than mere casualties of war.

In an Instagram post, he expressed outrage and sorrow over the loss of over 200 lives in the Yelewata massacre.

Odukoya called on the government to live up to its duty and protect Nigerians, emphasising the need for justice and accountability.

His reaction followed a growing chorus of public figures and Nigerians demanding action and justice in the face of ongoing violence and insecurity in the region.

He wrote, “My heart bleeds over the genocide happening in Benue.  The blood of the innocent killed cries out for justice from the earth!

“How long will we stay silent?! When homes are turned into crematoriums and fields become mass burial grounds! Body parts and bones litter the ground and tell a harrowing story of wickedness.

“Evil that does not discriminate against the old man or the infant child. Men, women, and babies all pay this price at the ultimate cost!

“These killings are not casualties of war but as a result of pure and senseless evil perpetrated by callous beasts whose hearts have become stone. Men who do not regard the sanctity of human life.

“I call on the government to live up to its duty and protect Nigerians. I pray for the Yelewta community and all those who have been affected by this harrowing loss. Those whose minds and hearts are forever scarred. I pray for peace, I pray for strength. May God receive the souls of the dearly departed.”

  • God instructed me not to cut my hair, says Jimmy Odukoya

God instructed me not to cut my hair, says Jimmy Odukoya

Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Jimmy Odukoya has shared a compelling narrative about the decision to keep his dreadlocks.

Speaking during a recent sermon, Jimmy said he sought God’s guidance on his appearance before resuming pastoral duties and God clearly told him not to cut his hair.

To confirm this message, he asked his sister, Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun, to pray about it and she received the same instruction, validating Jimmy’s experience.

Odukoya said: “Before I came back, one of the things I asked the Lord was whether or not I should cut my hair. And the Lord told me not to cut my hair.

“I knew what God had said to me so I told my sister to go pray and that God will speak to her. She goes back and told me I wasn’t supposed to cut my hair, to which I replied, ‘I know, because God already told me’.

“A couple of weeks ago, someone had come to see me all the way from Zimbabwe just to come to church. I said please bring the lady in and she begins to tell me her story.

“She says, ‘People think I’m crazy. I told everybody I am coming to Nigeria for the next three to four weeks. I’m just coming to church’.

“She says, ‘It was 2016, I was in New York, it was Thanksgiving and I had a vision, it felt so real. In this vision, I see you with your hair and you’re speaking to me and I have been dealing with somethings in my life.

“There was this dog on my shoulder. I knew the dog represented the weight I was carrying and you had this long sword. You began speaking to me and it looked like thunder and lightning was coming out of the sword and it burnt the dog into ashes. And you began to declare over me and gave certain instructions’.

“She said, ‘Fast forward 2025, after that vision I went through a tough break-up, I lost everything in a divorce. My ex took the house.’ She said, ‘Everything I worked for… It was a tough time. To compound issues, my mom got sick and I watched her die in my arms’.

“She said she was trying to find God so she went on YouTube to hear sermons. And all of a sudden my preaching popped up.

“And she said, ‘You don’t understand, because when I had this vision, I didn’t know you existed. The person I saw, I did not know it was a real person. So when I saw the man from the vision with a long hair I screamed. I didn’t know any pastor would have long hair.

    “Here’s what’s crazy, in 2016, I didn’t have my hair.

“The God who sees, hears and knows, knew at some point  in February 2025, one of His children will have to see a man preaching. Guess what? If He did not ask me to keep my hair, I would have cut it.

“And when I popped up on the screen, she would have seen me with no hair and it would have meant nothing. God was making me keep my hair to save a life.”

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya speaks on mother’s death

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya has recounted the emotional journey of grappling with faith and personal grief after his mother, Pastor Bimbo Odukoya, sudden death in 2005.

On the Truth Table podcast, hosted by his sister, Pastor Tolu Odukoya, Jimmy opened up about how grief affected his faith in God.

Jimmy described his fear of losing a family member, particularly his mother, who was the most important woman in his life.

“The difference between when mum died and when dad died was that with mum it was very sudden and no one saw it coming. I think that my biggest fear in life at the time was losing a member of my family and mum was the most important woman in my life,” he said.

Jimmy said when she passed away, he felt like he was at a crossroads, where he had to choose between abandoning his faith or confronting his pain.

He then decided to stay and cry, rather than walk away from his faith.

According to him: “When it happened, I felt like I was at a crossroads with God and I had two choices. It was either the middle finger to God and saying, ‘You know what? I’m done. This is not what you promised, this isn’t what you said. I’m leaving, I’m not doing this anymore. Where has this gotten us? And the other option was to stay there and just cry.”

“I thought to myself that if I take the other option where I walk away, I’m still going to come back eventually so why waste my time walking away? Let me just stay here and cry,” he added.

Jimmy likened his emotional state to a battered soldier in the midst of battle, but found solace in a message from God, who told him to “get up, soldier” and that he was now fearless since his worst fear had already happened.

He added: “It was one of my biggest fears at the time and you know scenes in movies where you see soldiers in war-battered and broken; his shield is somewhere and he’s pretty much lifeless. I felt battered and broken at that time and I remember God saying, ‘Get up, soldier. Don’t you realise that you’re fearless now? The worst has happened so what can the devil use to threaten or scare you anymore?”
