No emotions, sentiments in team selection – Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has revealed that he had to “take away emotions” before selecting his 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Keshi dropped seven players from his final squad and revealed that it was not an easy decision.

“It’s always tough when you have a relationship going on with your players. I had to take away emotions. You have been together with the players for several weeks and some have to go, it’s tough,” supersport.com quoted Keshi as saying to journalists in the team’s training camp in Pennsylvania.

The Nigeria trainer eventually dropped Daniel Akpeyi, Sunday Mba, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Nosa Igiebor, Joel Obi, Obinna Nsofor and Ejike Uzoenyi from his World Cup squad and revealed that he “removed sentiments” before arriving at his decision.

“You can’t bring emotions into this. I removed sentiments from this because I knew I had to be pure in my selection.

“I was realistic and knew I had to do what I had to do. It’s not about me; it’s not even about Nigeria but about Africa because we are flying the flag of the continent in Brazil.

“It’s a shame that I could not take the 30 of them (named in the provisional squad to Brazil) because if I could, I would have done it but some had to go,” he said.

Nigeria begins its World Cup campaign against Iran at Arena da Baixada, Curitiba on June 16.

The Super Eagles will then face Bosnia-Herzegovina at Arena Pantanal, Cuiabá on June 21 before rounding off the preliminary campaign against Argentina at Estádio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre on June 25.

Injury cost Nsofor, Joel Obi World Cup places

A knee injury cost Obinna Nsofor a place in Nigeria’s World Cup squad.

Nsofor was one of seven players axed by Stephen Keshi when he named his final 23-man squad and team sources told KickOffNigeria.com that Nsofor would have been in the 23 but for his knee issues.

“His knee swelled up after the first training session, and that’s why he missed out on the Scotland friendly.

“The doctors worked on it and monitored it over the next few days, but in the end, a decision was taken not to risk it, because he could aggravate it at the World Cup and that could be bad for his career.”

Joel Obi’s fate was also similar. Although he featured against Scotland, the midfielder was not at full tilt, and Keshi also decided to allow him time off to get fully fit.

    Keshi stands by Joel Obi

Joel Obi’s bad luck with injuries could cost the midfielder his place in the Nigerian squad for the 2014 Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil.

Head coach of the Nigerian national team, Stephen Keshi has insisted that he rates the AC Parma midfielder but may find it difficult to give the 22-year-old a chance to shine in Brazil as a result of his recent injury woes.

Obi has started just two league games for AC Parma this season (against Juventus and SS Lazio) as he struggles to find his best form and Keshi said he feels sad about the struggles Obi has had to face with injuries in recent months.

“When I first took over (as Nigeria coach), Joel Obi was one of the players I wanted to build the team around.

“I feel so sorry for the kid because more often than not, he’s been injured,” Keshi told supersport.com.

Obi played just 95 minutes in Serie A in the 2012/13 season and Keshi revealed that he tried to help the midfielder during that difficult phase of his career.

“I tried to help him and spoke to him a lot but after a while, you feel like giving up because you know what the footballer is going through at that period.

“He wasn’t playing (for Inter) at that time because of the injuries and I made him understand that I wanted him back.

“I knew he was going the extra mile to return to full fitness. Whenever he was nearing fitness, the injury would recur again and become even more complicated than it was before,” he said.

Obi now seems to have turned the corner and has now made seven league appearances this season for Parma in the Italian top flight.

He was particularly impressive against champions, Juventus on match day 30 (his first league start in 2014) and played for an hour at the Juventus Stadium before the Parma trainer, Roberto Donadoni decided to replace him with Ghanaian midfielder, Afriyie Acquah.

Keshi admitted that he has been carefully monitoring the progress of the midfielder in recent weeks and is pleased with the strides the former Internazionale man has taken.

“He’s been playing regularly for the past three weeks. When I was in the United States on vacation recently, I watched him play once for Parma.

“I am happy for him but it is still too early for me to say if he will make it (to Brazil) or not because he’s been out for almost two years but we’ll see how it goes,” he said.

Obi has 11 caps for Nigeria at senior level since earning his debut in 2011.

    JOEL OBI LISTED

NIGERIA’S Joel Obi has been included in Parma’s squad for today’s Serie A trip to San siro.

The Nigeria international who was formerly a player of Inter Milan will be playing on a familiar ground when Parma tackle AC Milan at the San Siro by 14.00 GMT.

However, the Ducali will be without Walter Gargano and Gabriel Paletta for Milan, while Nicola Pozzi needs knee surgery.

Paletta is ruled out by suspension and has been joined by Gargano, who is out with a muscular problem in his left calf.

There is a far more serious issue for former Sampdoria striker Pozzi, who damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Pozzi will require surgery and the season is now over for him.

Parma squad for Milan: Acquah, Amauri, Bajza, Biabiany, Cassani, Cassano, Cerri, Felipe, Galloppa, Gobbi, Lucarelli, Marchionni, Mirante, Molinaro, Munari, Nyantakyi, Obi, Palladino, Parolo, Pavarini, Rossini, Sall, Schelotto

    • Parma’s goalkeeper denies Onazi

The injury hoodoo of Super Eagles midfielder, Joel Obi emerged on Sunday as the Nigerian was pulled out of Parma’s 1-1 draw to Ogenyi Onazi’s Lazio at Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Obi barely played for 26 minutes before he left the pitch due to injury, and was replaced by Jaime Valdes.

After an uninspired first half, Keita Balde put Lazio in front early on in the second half before Alessandro Lucarelli headed home the equaliser for the home team.

In the wet conditions, Lazio quickly took the initiative seeing most of the possession in the opening minutes. The first chance came from a Biancocelesti free-kick, Antonio Candreva putting it far of the post.

Not long after, Lazio proved dangerous again. Hernanes put the ball into the box and after some confusion, the ball came to the feet of Ogenyi Onazi, whose shot was blocked however.

Roberto Donadoni’s troops began to see more of the ball as the game progressed and this among other led to a good shot from distance from Marco Marchionni, not far from going in.

Lazio continued to be the team in control with Parma luring ready to initiate their counter-attacks. Neither team however were able to really get their link-up play flowing, chances often fizzling out in the last final third of the pitch as a result.

  • Parma win without Joel Obi

    Parma win without Joel Obi

Serie A side Parma on Sunday secured their second win of the season but the modest

Italian outfit attained the feat without the help of their Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi.

Obi, who made some ‘improvement’ by making the team list, was left to watch all 90 minutes of the tie which went down at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Sunday’s game was somewhat ill tempered as both the home and visiting teams saw red as the four yellow cards also issued.

It was Raffaele Palladino who opened scoring in Sunday’s duel as he put the home team ahead in the 36th minute but the visitors fought back and restored parity just

    before going for the break.

Things started tight in the second half as Prama had to wait till the 70th minute

when Aleandro Rosi restored the lead.

Antonio Cassano finished the day’s splendid display when he sealed victory in the

76th minute after previously providing the assist for the two earlier goals.
