Fans inspired my hair transplant journey – John Cena

Renowned WWE legend and 17-time world champion John Cena has openly discussed his experience with hair transplantation he underwent in November 2023.

Currently on his retirement tour, Cena revealed that it was the fans who initially brought his attention to his thinning hair. During events, enthusiastic fans would hold up signs pointing out his balding, often humorously labelling him “Bald John Cena.”

In an interview with People Magazine, Cena explained that he chose to address the issue rather than ignore it or shave his head completely. He described how the fans’ signs became a part of the narrative during his performances, with Cena acknowledging their presence and using them as an opportunity to engage with the audience.

The WWE star’s decision to seek a solution was ultimately influenced by the fans’ playful yet persistent reminders.

Notably, his surgery coincided with the beginning of his retirement tour in January, which meant he had to hit the ground running after his procedure. Despite the challenges, Cena was determined to make the most of his tour, and he credits the hair transplant for boosting his confidence during this significant career milestone.

“When I’m trying to hide my hair loss, the audience is just bringing it to light, like ‘you’re going bald’. I used it as a thing of the point of the story we were in, just because I also want the audience to know I see your signs, the one that says ‘Bald John Cena’, I get it, but I also know it’s something I’m going through.

“I want to be genuine with that audience, letting me know, either do some work or shave your head. They pushed me into going to see what my options were. I ended up getting a transplant last November, and the crazy thing is, I came back for the retirement tour starting in January.

“So I’m like, alright, successful surgery, but I’ve got to get out there and go. It was not easy”, he said.

He stressed that he prioritises his personal goals and understands the substantial time commitment required for effective parenting.

Despite his uncertainties, Cena remains committed to his aspirations and values the openness he and his partner maintain about their future.

Cena said: “My biggest fear is I don’t think I’m personally ready, nor will I ever be, to invest the time it takes to be a great parent. Because I still have a lot to do and I still want to do a lot. I have a wonderful partner, we’ve had open conversations about this. We share the same values.

“It’s a tough subject to talk about because it immediately puts you in a category. People tend to judge. Human nature, we are all judgmental. But I operate under the construct that everyone is okay living their lives. I’m very happy with where I stand. I have a lot of joy and fulfillment in my life.”
