  • Police arraign prophet for defrauding man of N6.35m

    The  police on Friday arraigned a prophet, Vincent Adewunmi, in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly defrauding one Apostle Austin Okeke of N6.35 million.

    Adewunmi, 36, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretense.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, told the court that the accused committed the offence between the month of May and  August 2018 at Ori-Okuta, Owutu in Ikorodu.

    He said that the accused, a prophet of a particular church, fraudulently obtained the money from the complainant, with a promise to secure an Australian visa for about 12 members of his Church.

    Iberedem said that the offence,  contravened the provisions of  section 411 and 314 of criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. (Revised)

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

    Chief Magistrate F.A Azeez, admitted the accused to bail, in the sum of  two million Naira with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until December 20, for mention.

  • Court remands two teenagers for theft

    An Ikorodu Magistrates’ court  in Lagos  on Friday ordered that two  teenagers, Ogunshina Kudus,19, Bashit Olalekan, 18, who stole electronics worth N154,000, be  remanded in prison until Dec. 6, for sentencing.

    Police charged Kudus and Olalekan,  with two counts bordering on felony and stealing.

    The accused pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against them.

    Following their guilty plea, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs F.A Azerz, remanded them in prison pending sentence.

    According to Police Prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, the accused committed the offences on Oct. 20 at Liado area, Igbogbo Baiyeku in Ikorodu at 10.45 a.m.

    Iberedem told the court that the accused break into the residence of one Mr Ogunyemi Olabode  and stole a computer system valued at N50,000,  LG plasma TV valued N100,000 and three crates of egg valued at  N4,000.

    The offences contravened Sections 411 and 307(c) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    Our reporter also reports that section 411 stipulates seven years imprisonment for felonious offence while section 307(c) seven years for break in.

  • Fake lawyer docked in Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court

    Three years after allegedly acting as a counsel, the law has finally caught up with a fake lawyer, Samson Obu, at an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

    The 43-year-old, residing at No. 5, Imam St., Owutu, Agric in Ikorodu, near Lagos, was docked on a count charge of impersonation, following suspicion raised by some lawyers.

    According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, the accused had appeared in the court on April 5 to represent an accused.

    “He announced his appearance for an accused and quoted a wrong section, which was what aroused the suspicion of other lawyers, including Mr Adetayo Ladega.

    “Ladega, the Vice-President of the Ikorodu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and other lawyers challenged Obu and he was interrogated and arrested by the police.

    “The accused has been appearing as a lawyer for the past three years,” the prosecutor said. Iberedem said the offence contravened Section 78 of the Lagos State Criminal Code, 2015. Obu, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F. A. Azeez, granted him bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Azeez said the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment and must make deposits of N25, 000 each.

    She adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

    Court docks man for bathing neighbour with hot water

    A 35-year-old man, Benjamin Osueke, was on Friday charged before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly pouring hot water on a female neighbour.

    Osueke, who lives at 24, James Olaogun St., Ikorodu, is facing a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, told the court that the accused on Feb. 18, poured hot water on his neighbour, Mrs Benedicta Orji,  in the kitchen.

    “There was an argument over electricity bill between the accused and the complainant; after the argument,  the accused warned her not to cook on his table because they share kitchen.

    “Suddenly, he poured hot water on the complainant which burnt her body badly,” the prosecutor said.

    He said that the offence contravened Section 230 of the Lagos State  Criminal Laws, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A. Azeez, granted the accused N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Azeez said that the sureties must reside within the court jurisdiction, be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until March 29, for hearing.
