  • Open letter to John Kayode Fayemi

I DID not intend to write you an open letter. I only wanted to respond like other Ekitikete to your hard fought and won victory on Ekiti Renewal Agenda WhatsApp platform as I woke up middle of the night while holidaying outside Nigeria when the writer in me was spurred to action. Let me state that I was present in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, 5th May 2018 doing a form of ethnographic survey of the aborted APC primary. Prior to this time, I was at the grassroots to get genuine feedbacks from Ekiti Kete.

Saliently and succinctly stated, Many Ekitikete will be waiting, believing to see a better Dr. John Kayode Fayemi who now understands the sociology of Ekitikete, who will not just stay at Isan Ekiti dishing out directives for people to gather to him but will rather go out to local Ekitikete in Efon, Aramoko, Ijero, Ido, Ikerre, Omuo, Emure, Igbara Odo, Otun, Iye, Ise, Ikole, Ilawe, Igede, Ogotun, etc., dinning and wining with them and ready to listen to them rather than believing he knows what they need. This is crucial and core if you will return to Oke Ayoba again. Doc, please do not treat this political contest as a familiar terrain, as a lot of water have passed under the bridge between June 2014 and now. Unfortunately, you made your intention to run known about a month ago even though prior to your declaration you often summoned your adherents and followers to your country home at Isan Ekiti testing the waters!

One good thing: exhibiting humility by starting to apologize to Ekitikete. Let Dr. JKF act the full script in humility. That done; I will be one of your iconoclastic followers. To your ardent disciples and followers, they need to do a lot for you at the grassroots not billboard or money politics campaign. Basically, with you at the forefront, you need a down to heart issue based campaign meeting with strategic stakeholders in the Ekiti project in humility! Google and learn from erstwhile USA First Lady, Senator Hilary Clinton, who, while running for the Senate seat did nothing than going round and emphatically listen to electorates . She won. Dr. Fayemi, you can take a cue as you have not seemingly displayed and depicted you fully grasped the sociology of Ekitikete between June 2014 and now. I am still feeling the ‘pain’ that defeat inflicted on some of us. I mean it. Anyway, congratulations on a hard won victory.

Before, I go; Doc, please work on your ardent supporters, followers and disciples. You are refined and urbane as a person, having met you at close quarters. In slugging it out with other contestants in the race to Oke Ayoba, caution them against the use of uncouth, uncivilised and un-dignifying mannerism that could mar your chances and so portray you as an Abuja product, with powerful influential backing, forced and foisted upon Ekitikete. Please take this seriously as I am writing frankly to you as ethnographic scholar and researcher in followership and leadership, having interfaced with Ekitikete in my traversing and triangulating Ekiti landmass.

Once again, congratulations to Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti APC gubernatorial candidate. I wish you the best while I remain one of your few iconoclastic followers.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi will restore Ekiti’s lost glory – Group

A political pressure group, the John Kayode Fayemi Group (JKFG) has welcomed the decision of Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to run for the Ekiti State governorship seat.

The group said Fayemi’s entry will enrich the governorship race and give him an opportunity to offer his service to the people.

Fayemi told reporters at a press briefing over the weekend that he would seek the nomination of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest in the 2018 governorship election.

He promised to formally declare after the lifting of ban on open campaign by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement on Thursday by its State Coordinator, Comrade Bisi Dada and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Victor Irewolede, the JKFG said Fayemi’s return will make Ekiti better in all sectors.

The group expressed appreciation to the various interest groups who mounted pressure on Fayemi to take another shot at the governorship ahead of the July 14 governorship poll.

It identified the stakeholders that mounted pressure on Fayemi to contest to include politicians, labour movement, youths,  students, women groups, artisans, civil servants, among others.

JKFG urged the APC delegates to vote Fayemi at the May 5 primary to have another opportunity to view for the governorship seat.

It expressed confidence that the minister would win the governorship poll if fielded as his party’s flag bearer.

The statement said: “Dr Fayemi, in agreeing to view for the governorship post again has promised to surpass his achievements of his first tenure.

“He will continue to  enhance the welfare of all civil servants and teachers through payment of special allowances to teachers and all categories of workers.

“He has also reiterated that the social security scheme for the aged will bounce back.

“It is on this note that we solicit the support of all teachers, civil servants, the youth and all people of the state in making Dr Kayode Fayemi the preferred candidate in the forthcoming general election.

“Dr Fayemi will bring back the lost glory of Ekiti  State which has deteriorated over the past few years.

“As at today, workers are owed several months of unpaid salaries, education sector is in comatose, elders no longer enjoy the social security scheme, infrastructural development is restricted to few towns.”

  • ‘Fayemi deserves second term’

    ‘Fayemi deserves second term’

In this piece, social critic Dare Babalola contends that Governor Kayode Fayemi will have an edge over other candidates because of his impressive performance in the last three and half years.

As the countdown to the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State begins, the candidates have been delving into their respective individual histories to convince the electorate to vote for them. For former Governor Ayo Fayose, his singsong has been that he is no longer the Fayose that was governor 10 years ago. From one rally to the other, especially in locations where many of his actions had alienated the people from him, Fayose repeatedly claimed that he is now ‘born again’ and would be a different governor if given another chance.

It has been another ballgame with the incumbent governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who is leveraging on the execution of his eight-point agenda to convince the electorate that he deserves a second term on the crest of his performance.

The flagship of the Fayemi government is the infrastructure development of the state. Fayemi has used his campaign rallies to point at many roads he has constructed or rehabilitated in all parts of the state, bringing the attention of every community to how they have benefitted under the scheme. He had promised in 2010 that the scheme is to establish optimum communities that will improve citizen’s lives and attract investments so much that by 2014, all parts of the state is accessible by major roads, making water dams in the state functional to increase water supply by 80per cent and engage in private-public partnership for independent power projects. To actualise the vision, he embarked on the construction of five kilometre road in each of the 16 local governments bringing the total to 81.5 kilometres in the first phase. The second phase covered another 91 kilometres across the 16 local councils. A total of 958 kilometres of federal, state and local government roads have been rehabilitated, reconstructed and/or constructed in the last three and half years. The highpoint is the dualization of major highways in the state capital complete with road furniture that has transformed the face of Ado Ekiti into a modern state capital.   The government is also currently laying 400 kilometres long water pipelines to provide pipe-borne water for every community in the state as envisioned in the eight-point agenda.

The vision of the Fayemi Government is to establish a knowledge economy that will ensure that skilled manpower, for which the state is renowned, becomes an economic advantage. In three years, the government renovated 836 primary schools and 183 secondary schools. The government also established 24 new primary schools in 2011 and another 18 in 2012 bringing the number of primary schools from 776 in 2010 to 836 by 2012.These initiatives has led to remarkable increase in primary school enrolment which jumped from 155,296 in 2010 to 170,768. This trend has been repeated in secondary school enrolment making Ekiti State the highest per capita in terms of public school enrolment in the country.

In its effort at promoting e-learning and making the students competitive in the global economy, it distributed 33,000 laptops free of charge to students and 18,000 laptops to teachers at a subsidised price. The government also introduced the payment of Rural Allowance to teachers in the rural areas. It introduced the payment of Core Subject Allowance to teachers of subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Biology to promote the teaching of science and ensure that Ekiti students are competitive in this age of technology. In tertiary education, the government restored peace and industrial harmony to Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti; reduced fees paid in higher institutions and introduced various scholarship schemes to help many indigent and brilliant students of the state. Between 2011 and 2013, a total sum of N315.7Million was disbursed as scholarship to 2,329 students while bursary awards of N148.2Million were paid to a total of 9,919 beneficiaries.

These initiatives have not taken time to yield fruits. Although Ekiti State has always being renowned for high literacy level, the level of literacy in the state has further gone up from 67 percent in 2011 to 72.2percent by 2012. In the formal sector, the state has recorded many recognitions of the advancement in education. The state has won the Best Overall Performance State in the Annual National Mathematics and Science Competitions by Science Teachers (STAN); first position in Mathematics for Senior Secondary School Category in the National Quiz competition organised by MAN in 2013; first position in ANCOPPS National Stage Quiz/Essay Competition in 2013; Best Male Student in 2013 WAEC Result and for two years running; has produced the best student in the Nigerian Law School.

It is in recognition of these remarkable strides that the World Bank recently announced a $10 million support for the state under the State Education Programme Investment Project (SEPIP).

Fayemi has also recorded significant strides in the provision of healthcare services. He introduced free health care for pregnant women, children under the age of five, elderly citizens, the physically challenged persons and people living with HIV/AIDS. He renovated all general hospitals in the state and constructed a new one, Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, in the state capital, to bring healthcare service to the doorsteps of the people. He constructed a Cancer Diagnostic and Wellness Centre, named after his late deputy, Aduni Olayinka, in Ado Ekiti. In general, Fayemi has increased the number of health care facilities in the state from the 350 he inherited 2010 to 495.

Beyond the walls of the hospitals and the health facility centres, Fayemi introduced a regime of health missions through which specialized teams of medical personnel travel across the communities to provide healthcare services to the people. At the last count, 363,050 persons have benefitted from the programme. Another 7,850 persons have benefitted from the Ilera Lafin programme through which health care services are taken to the palaces of the traditional rulers for the benefits of the communities, bringing number of beneficiaries of the health outreach programmes to 370,900.

The benefits of these initiatives are beginning to manifest. The state now has the lowest infant mortality in the country. It has the lowest maternal mortality in the country as well. It presently has the highest life expectancy in the country at 55 years; against the national life expectancy of 47 years. These records are not surprising given the response of the people to the healthcare initiatives of Fayemi. For instance, in-patient attendance of public health care facilities jumped from 9,448 in 2010 to 11,867 by 2012. Delivery of birth in the secondary health facilities increased from 2,190 in 2010 to 2,823 by 2012, while out-patient attendance at secondary health facilities rose from 62,374 in 2010 to 85,730 by 2012.

A major initiative of the Fayemi administration is the enactment of the Ekiti State Senior Citizen Welfare Law under which citizens above the age of 65 are entitled to a monthly stipend of N5,000. The government has enrolled 25,000 senior citizens of the state under the scheme. The senior citizens also enjoy free medical service.

In the area of industrial development, Fayemi resuscitated the Ire Burnt Bricks Industry which had been moribund for 23 years, established enterprise development centre sat Iloro, Aisegba and Ilupeju to train the people in entrepreneur skills, increased the number of small scale industries from 1,066 in 2011 to 2,257 by 2012 through the provision of a conducive environment and several economic empowerment schemes. He also remodelled the Ikogosi Warm Springs and embarked on a scheme to develop the tourism corridor of the state.

For gender equality and development, Fayemi led the way in the country when he enacted the Gender-based Violence (Prohibition) Bill and the reservation of at least one third of all appointments and promotions for women. Skill acquisition programmes has been provided for girls out of school, the number of women based cooperative societies has been increased from 100 to 386 between 2010 and 2011 and micro credit facility has been extended to over 5,000 women and special empowerment schemes were designed for market women.

  • Ohanaeze backs Fayemi for second term

Ohanaeze backs Fayemi for second term

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ekiti State Chapter, has said that Igbos  would support Governor John Kayode Fayemi’s  for a second term because the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in the June 21 governorship election is transforming the state.

According to the group’s leader, Prince Nathaniel Uzoma, Igbos in Ekiti State are partners in progress with their host community adding that they will vote for the candidate that would bring peace, stability and progress to the state.

He said:  “There have been pressures from different quarters on the stand of Ndigbo living in Ekiti State on the forthcoming governorship election. Let me state categorically that Ndigbo has enjoyed and maintained rosy relationship with successive governments in Ekiti State, including the incumbent Governor Fayemi. Remember that Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a socio-cultural organisation and not a political party, but even at that we still have the right to exercise our fundamental human rights, which include the right to vote for who we want to govern the state.

“If a father has six children, he does not cast some away and embrace others. That is not the characteristics of a good father. A good father accommodates all his children, but when it becomes necessary settles with the one that has shown him love and care. That is our position. We want peace, stability and progress in Ekiti State. We want our interest to be upheld and protected and we will vote for the candidate that would make that possible.”

  • Why we donate Vuvuzela to Fayemi’s campaign organisation, by Foundation

Why we donate Vuvuzela to Fayemi’s campaign organisation, by Foundation

The introduction of Vuvuzela to the JKF (John Kayode Fayemi) Campaign Organisation has introduced a new dimension into electioneering campaigns in Ekiti State, even as the donor explained his motive.

Vuvuzela, the instrument that brought glamour into the 2004 World Cup staged in South Africa has found its way into political rallies of incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi and the standard bearer of the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Youths have been blowing the instrument to spice speeches and addresses of party chieftains at rallies in communities.

House of Representative Member and Director-General of the campaign group, Mr. Bimbo Daramola, who received the truckload of the materials from Caring Heart Foundation, described the donation as a boost to the ongoing campaign of his candidate.

Daramola later made a symbolic presentation of the materials to the governor through his deputy, Prof Modupe Adelabu, who coincidentally is the mother of the donor’s representative.

According to Daramola, Vuvuzela has the sound of a trumpet, which he noted symbolizes victory. “We are sure of victory with these campaign materials”, he said.

Also speaking, representative of the Foundation, Mr. Dapo Adelabu said the donation was his contribution to the re-election bid of governor Fayemi who he noted, has doing a lot to bring Ekiti State to loftier heights.

Besides, he described the donation as a message to politicians to be sportsmanly while politicking as only the best can triumph in any electoral process.

He said the incumbent has laid a solid foundation for greater Ekiti and therefore should be supported by every lover of progress residing in the state.

  • Opposition has nothing to offer, says Fayemi Campaign

Opposition has nothing to offer, says Fayemi Campaign

The John Kayode Fayemi (JKF) Campaign Organisation has urged the people of Ekiti State to be wary of “the lies of opposition politicians, who are bare of progressive and development ideas”.

The organisation’s spokesman Mr. Dimeji Daniels spoke on a private radio station in Akure, the Ondo State capital, ADABA 88.9 FM.

Daniels said: “It is less than three months to the election, what can anyone say are the campaign points of the opposition parties?”

Urging prospective voters to see the June 21 election as an opportunity to “retain that which they already have”, Daniels said: “The opposition is confused by the superlative performance of Governor Kayode Fayemi, who has instituted transformation in every sphere of life.”

According to him, the rumour by opposition parties that Fayemi would sack workers if he wins is “untrue, baseless and unfounded”.

Rather than sack workers, he said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government had been employing more workers.

Daniels said: “The opposition is overwhelmed by the numerous achievements recorded by Fayemi and they are peddling lies, but the people are not buying into their lies. How can a government that is daily employing people sack workers, who have contributed to its success?

“The governor has achieved so much that the opposition has nothing to campaign against him and that is why they are resorting to lies. I go around on a daily basis and the people are saying the governor has performed well. Ekiti people are too enlightened and discerning to be fooled by the antics of the opposition.”

He was optimistic that Fayemi would have landslide victory at the poll, “based on the record he has set as the best performing governor in the history of the state”.

Daniels said: “We cannot do anything without the support of the electorate. A vote for Fayemi is a vote for the continuity of good governance and consolidation on the transformation being witnessed across the state. It is a vote for transparency, decency, focus, dedication and devotion to a common cause.

“Between 1999 and 2003, the state enjoyed peace, but that changed when another party took over power in 2003. Between 2003 and 2006, people were harassed, intimidated, hounded and killed. The people could not comment freely on how they were being governed. But since October, 2010, our people have been enjoying peace, which has brought development to our state.

“Ekiti people are enjoying peace under the administration of Dr. Fayemi and they want this peace to be sustained so that we can continue to enjoy the development that we are witnessing now.

“They do not want to return to the dark days of violence, killings, assassinations and all other vices experienced before the progressive government took over in Ekiti.”
