NGF to review report on President’s health

Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi last night described the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari as “a miracle” given reports on his health in the social media. He said the social media portrayed the President’s health as “bad”.

Umahi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), spoke after the visit of seven governors to the President in London.

Others on the team are: Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Abdulahhi Ganduje (Kano), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Kashim Shettima (Borno) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

The delegation had lunch with the President at Abuja House, Nigeria’s official residence in London.

President’s wife Aisha, was with him to receive the delegation. Ortom’s wife, Eunice was also in attendance.

It was the second delegation to visit the President after Sunday’s visit by some All Progessives Congress (APC) leaders and governors led by National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

Umahi told the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Network news at 9:00am that he was “excited” to see the president in a good frame of mind adding that he was grateful to God that the prayer of Nigerians for the president’s recovery had been heard.

Ganduje said the President was in a good state of health. “We believe he will soon be back to Nigeria.”

In a tweet under the photograph of the visit, Ajimobi said: “My counterparts, the governors’ forum delegation and I were warmly received by His Excellency President @MBuhari in London, United Kingdom.

Another governor in the delegation said the President cracked jokes with the delegation without any speech inhibition.

He said: “Buhari walked without support to receive us and he took time to exchange pleasantries with each one of us. We also had a group photograph.”

“His voice was the usual intonation and he has no speech inhibition in whatsoever manner. He was overwhelmed by our visit.

“He told us that he is ready to come back to his desk once clearance is given by his doctors.

“We compared notes on the state of the nation and the tasks ahead.

“The signs of recovery were visible but not overwhelming on him. He was looking healthier than when he came back the last time. Buhari is back to life.”

It was gathered that the President’s official photographer, Bayo Omoboriowo, was deployed in London in order to “take many shots and clear all doubts about his recuperation and fitness.”

There were indications last night that the Northern Governors Forum( NGF) will meet today in Kaduna on the security challenges in the region and to review reports on the President’s health.

“The insecurity in the North has relapsed, the Federal Government has to bail us out. This is one of the reasons why we are holding a session.

“Some of us who were not in London will seize the opportunity to get status report on the health of the President.”

  • PDP faults APC leaders, governors over handling of President’s health

PDP faults APC leaders, governors over handling of President’s health

Rumours on the President’s health were debunked again yesterday.

He is not confined to a chair, Nasarawa State Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura said.

President Muhammadu Buhari hosted an All Progressives Congress (APC) delegation in London on Sunday. The Presidency released the photograph of the meeting and a short story on the visit. After a brief silence, the critics returned to action yesterday, insisting that the President is gravely ill.

Al-Makura was in the delegation led by APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun. Also on the visit were Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Governors Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Yahaya Bello (Kogi).

Al-Makura said the President was “agile, mentally alert” and brainstormed on state matters for about an hour with the delegation during the meeting at the Nigerian House in London.

He described those doubting the photograph of the meeting as being “comical”.

The governor, who spoke exclusively with our correspondent shortly after returning from London, said: “The President is fit enough to return anytime.”

“We did not only visit the President, we walked, we sat down with him and we fraternised the way we used to do. He was not confined to any chair or any place.

“The President was really looking himself and very healthy. He was very alert, very concerned about the country and he was abreast of the latest issues in Nigeria. He has information on everything going on in the country.

“He maintained his agility, his strength, his wit and the alertness of his mind. As far as I am concerned, the President can come back anytime from now. He is fit to return home.”

Al-Makura said: “For about an hour, we brainstormed on a number of issues, especially about national interest and the unity of this country. We spoke generally on how to handle issues or policies that will enhance the quality of life in this country.

“The President also tried to find out how each state was doing from the governors on the trip. And he asked questions from party leaders and all members of the delegation.

“After a long session, we ended up on the dining table where we feasted with the President.”

On the allegation that the trip was a make-believe, Al-Makura said: “Anyone can embark on wishful thinking. I was a member of the delegation and I have told you the truth about the way we met and interacted with the President.

“The onus is on who alleges to prove otherwise. Whoever says we didn’t go is casting aspersions on our integrity. This is really unfortunate. We have no cause to lie to Nigerians. I just came in this morning and I have all my travel documents intact.

“I am surprised that anyone could say that we didn’t see the President. It makes me appreciate the extent to which a person can go comical.”

Leading the critics is the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has faulted the approach adopted by the APC and some government functionaries in communicating with Nigerians about the President’s health.

In a telephone chat with our correspondent in Abuja, PDP spokesman Dayo Adeyeye chided the delegation, saying they were not being fair to Nigerians.

Adeyeye said if the President was indeed well as shown to Nigerians, the APC delegation ought to have got from him audio and video messages to Nigerians.

Adeyeye said, “For God’s sake, President Buhari was elected to represent about 200 million Nigerians and they are circulating just one photograph without any word from the leader.

“That is not the right way to treat Nigerians who have been feeling the President’s absence from the country for close to three months. They are being unfair to the Nigerian people.”

The opposition spokesman challenged the ruling party and its officials in government to do what others in the civilised world do in similar situations by providing detailed information on the President’s state of health.

“The Presidency and the APC should learn to do the right. Nigerians deserve better treatment from a President they elected to run the affairs of their country.

“It is very unfair to keep them in the dark concerning the health of the President only to be circulating just one photograph in the media for people who have been praying for the recovery of our President all this while”, Adeyeye added.

Restating the commitment of the PDP to continue to pray for the speedy recovery of the President, Adeyeye maintained that the opposition party sincerely wished Buhari well.

“As a party, we have been praying for the President’s speedy recovery and we will continue to pray for his recovery because when it comes to matters of health, nobody is immune to illness.

“But the Presidency and the APC should stop taking Nigerians for granted with the way they are handling issues around the President’s health. This is not the way to treat a President they elected to govern them,” Adeyeye added.

  • Buhari recovering from illness – APC

Buhari recovering from illness – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari is fast recovering from his illness contrary to allegations that he is on life support.

The National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, gave the assurance in Abuja while speaking with newsmen at the end of a meeting between the party`s National Working Committee (NWC) and state governors elected on the party’s platform.

“We are glad to inform you that President Muhammadu Buhari is recovering in a very robust manner.

“We hope he takes it easy and when he comes back, I have no doubt at all that we will have a new and active period of activities.’’

He, however, said only the president’s doctors abroad could decide when he would be fit to return to the country.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, had recently alleged that President Buhari was on life-support in a London Hospital where he is receiving medical attention.

The APC chairman, however, refused to respond to the governor’s comment, saying he would do that at an appropriate time.

“If I respond, I will be dignifying him.

“At the appropriate time, people will answer him; at the appropriate level; at the appropriate time.

“He is in a different world altogether,’’ Oyegun stated.

According to him, the party’s leadership has confidence in President Buhari.

He added that the meeting x-rayed the nation, ongoing agitation for its restructuring and inciting statements emanating from different parts of the country.

Oyegun stressed that such inciting statements are not good “for the nation`s health and have to be stopped.”

According to him, the party maintains its earlier position on the restructuring of the country as clearly stated in its manifesto.

He further said the party’s leadership would do all it could at all times to ensure that the unity of the country was preserved.

  • Committee identifies communication breakdown as reason for Kogi APC crisis

Committee identifies communication breakdown as reason for Kogi APC crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Fact-Finding and Reconciliation Committee on Kogi Crisis has blamed acrimony in the state’s chapter on communication breakdown.

It said that the hitch in communication engendered the ruptured relationship among the party in the state, the government and the governor.

Chairman of the committee, Chief Tony Momoh, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja, while speaking with newsmen after submitting the committee`s report to the party`s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

He said that while the committee`s assignment lasted, it met three times with Gov. Yahaya Bello because the bulk of the issues; “ really stopped on his desk“.

Momoh added that the committee also met with members of the House of Assembly and other relevant stakeholders in the state.

He said that while everybody in the state accepted that Bello was its chief executive, issues on his style of governance were raised.

According to him, lots of people testified on what the governor was alleged to have done.

“We came to the conclusion that the problem of Kogi is absent of communication, miscommunication or even inadequate communication.

“There was breakdown of communication and everybody was singing his own song and telling his own story, “ the Momoh said.

He added that while the committee pleaded with all aggrieved party members in the state to be calm, it ensured that everybody that had a case was heard.

He, however, said that while most aggrieved party members had their grouse against the governor, he also came up with his own defence.

Momoh said that some of the identified problems in the state were skewed appointment against the party, non-payment of workers’ salaries and political reconciliation with late Abubakar Audu and James Faleki’s group.

He said the exclusive membership registration which the governor was said to be doing without relating to the party`s leadership was also identified as a problem.

Momoh said that also identified was poor state’s House of Assembly relations, dictatorial governance and corruption allegations and not to give anti-party activities during the elections.

The committee chairman said that the party`s national headquarters complicity and poor stakeholders` consultations was also identified as an issue.

He stressed that all identified issues were comprehensively discussed, adding that the committed had submitted its recommendations to the party`s leadership for scrutiny.

This, he said, included five pages of executive briefs which summarised the recommendations and 300 pages of presentations.

He maintained that the recommendation was a win win consensus and would be acceptable by all parties.

“I can assure you that the recommendations we gave will be acceptable to all parties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Momoh, was the former National Peter Chairman of the dissolved Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

Members of the committee which was inaugurated on April 12, were earlier charged by the party`s leadership to carry on their personal prestige and integrity and undertake the assignment without fear or favour.

  • Contempt of Court: Oyegun, Buni make U-turn

Contempt of Court: Oyegun, Buni make U-turn

…Withdraws appointment letter to APC Deputy Chairman

Following the threat of imprisonment for alleged contempt of court, the All Progressives Congress (APC)  National Chairman, John Odigie Oyegun and the National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni have made a U-Turn in the leadership tussle that have engulfed the Ebonyi state chapter of the party.

The duo in a letter date 25th of April 2017 to the State Deputy Chairman, Eze Nwachukwu withdrew an earlier Interim Approval they granted to him as Acting State Chairman.

The State High Court Abakaliki presided over  by Justice A. A. Nwigwee had last week summoned the duo to appear before it next week to answer questions as to why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying an order of interlocutory injunction granted in November, 2014.

The order retrained  them, their agents and privies from appointing caretaker committee in place of the executives elected during the ward, Local government and state congresses conducted in the state on November 11, 16 and 19 2014 respectively pending the determination of the substantive suit.

But the national chairman and Secretary in total disregard for the orders of the court transmitted a letter to the state deputy chairman, Eze Nwachukwu as the state Acting chairman of the party.

The court irked by their action, summoned them to appear before it on 4th of May 2017 to explain why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying it’s orders.

While Nwachukwu claimed that Nwobasi was suspended, the state chairman of the party on his part insisted that he still remained the authentic chairman of the party, describing his deputy as an “impostor”.

Perhaps, in a bid to avoid the punishment of the court, the duo now transmitted a letter Titled, “RE:INTERIM APPROVAL AS ACTING STATE CHAIRMAN FOR EBONYI STATE LETTER OF WITHDRAWAL”.

In the letter, which he signed, Mr Buni, claimed he was withdrawing the earlier appointment letter because of the restraining injunction granted by the court.

“I write in respect of my letter dated the 23rd of February, 2017 conveying the approval of the National Working Committee (NWC) of your nomination as acting state chairman of our party in Ebonyi state”

“My attention has been drawn to a subsisting order of court (please find attached) granted by Hon Justice A.A. Nwaigwe J of the state High Court Abakaliki, Ebonyi state on the 6th day of November 2014, restrainingthe party from taking any step in relation to the existing state executives”.

” This therefore precludes us from continuing with your appointment as Acting Chairman of A.P.C. in Ebonyi State as such appointment will run foul of the court and will be an affront to the rule of law which the Party has sworn to uphold and abide by”.

“In the light of the above, I write to withdraw the said letter appointing you as the Acting Chairman of the Party in Ebonyi State. We regret any inconvenience this error may have cause you”, read the letter.

NASS crisis: My hands are clean – Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Thursday exonerated himself from the National Assembly crisis.

He noted that the crisis has assumed an unbecoming dimension with people accusing him of accepting gratification from senators.

The APC chairman hosted South East/South South Professionals who visited him in his office in Abuja.

Oyegun said the accusations are strange to him because he has no reason to collect money from Senators since he is not in a position to vote for them in the National Assembly.

He described those peddling the rumour as devoid of conscience, noting that God will eventually vindicate him and make his opponents regret their actions.

He said: “So if they are saying you have taken money from a Senator, I am not a Senator. I cannot do it. I cannot at this age be a Senate President or Senate Leader.

“So what is he giving me money for? And in politics when you throw this into public domain, how many people know me personally? So it is annoying, it is dirty. It is crude, it is unbecoming.

“It shows the people are so devoid of conscience. It doesn’t make me lose sleep because I have God that is so preventive of me because the people who are doing this will eventually eat their own words. I have no doubt at all in my mind.”

He expressed surprise that the party is not completely done with the 2015, members are already accusing him of conspiring to favour the north in the 2019 elections.

Oyegun noted that since he is not from the north and does not organize them for elections, the accusation is meaningless.

  • BUHARI’S VICTORY: John Odigie-Oyegun

    BUHARI’S VICTORY: John Odigie-Oyegun

THE National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) assumed the role of a prophet in the build up to the election, predicting emphatically that the end of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had come. He made the announcement at different fora with the conviction of a credible seer. Today, the PDP that dismissed his predictions with a wave of the hand has paid dearly for it.

Interestingly, the Edo High Chief is a man of many firsts. He emerged the first National Chairman of the APC on June 13, 2014, after contesting in a very keen but transparent national congress of APC. Oyegun succeeded the interim chairman and former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, at the first National Convention of the party, held at the Eagles Square, Abuja.

The APC chairman was bringing into office a robust wealth of experience. He was elected the first civilian governor of Edo State on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform during the transition to democracy launched by General Ibrahim Babangida and served from January 1992 to November 1993. He and others were removed from office after General Sani Abacha seized power. Later, he became the National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2009 he was chairman of the Technical Working Committee of CODER. After stirring the ship of the ANPP successfully, Chief Oyegun in 2012 joined the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

He has also booked a record in history as the first chairman of an opposition political party to oust an incumbent president in the annals of the country.

Born on 12 August 1939 in Warri, Delta State, he attended St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, and then went to the University of Ibadan where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He then served in various capacities as a federal civil servant working as a development planner.

Right from the very day that he emerged the chairman of the APC, Chief Odigie began to announce the demise of the PDP in a manner that was devoid of the spineless boast of politicians in the country. He started this while giving his acceptance speech, assuring    Nigerians that the era of the PDP would be over after the general election.

“Tonight I say to Nigerians: Your wait is over. Your prayers have not been in vain. Help is on the way. The APC is here! In 2015, Nigerians will finally have the opportunity to kick out a long-ruling party that has, among other things, failed to provide them with stable power supply, failed to provide them with security that will enable them sleep peacefully on their beds at night, failed to provide employment for millions of Nigerian youths, and failed to stem the tide of corruption that is robbing Nigeria’s children of their future.

“In 2015, the All Progressives Congress will provide Nigerians with a visionary, dedicated and people-oriented leadership that will liberate the nation from PDP’s rule of poverty and oppression. Under the stewardship of the APC, Nigeria will progress and Nigerians will thrive. This is our sacred pledge to Nigerians tonight.”

He did not stop there as he went ahead to predict that the funeral of the PDP would be held after the election. Speaking at the zonal rally of the party held Port Harcourt before the election, he said: “The ‘burial ceremony’ of the PDP which was postponed by President Goodluck Jonathan will hold on March 28. PDP is confused and disoriented. They have no sense of direction. PDP is down but not out yet. Let me also assure you that PDP’s funeral still holds despite the rescheduling of the elections. We will have a good funeral ceremony for PDP come March 28.”

He, however, had an unsavoury experience when his residence in Abuja was raided by armed invaders in January 2015. The invaders, two burly men, removed the window burglar bars to gain access to the residence from the back, and then made straight for the personal room of the chairman. He was not in any way deterred by the attack. Instead of being ruffled, the incident apparently spurred him to embark on more strategic campaigns that eventually sealed the coffin of the PDP.

Come May 29 when the President-Elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, would be formally sworn in as the next president of the country, Chief Oyegun will, no doubt, be fulfilled that his dream of seeing a new Nigeria that is rid of corruption, unemployment, poverty and other vices that were carried out with impunity has begun.

  • PDP, military in ‘unholy’ alliance – Oyegun

PDP, military in ‘unholy’ alliance – Oyegun

    We’re neutral, says Defence

NSA: March 28, April 11 stand

Another shift of the general elections is in the smithy, All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun alleged yesterday.

It is all in a bid to spark a constitutional crisis and subvert the will of the people, Odigie-Oyegun said.

His proof – a secret memo from the Presidency to the military, inviting officers to a conference in Kaduna, allegedly on how to intimidate the electorate in APC-controlled states and rig the elections.

Odigie-Oyegun accused the Military High Command of being in an “unholy”  and “dangerous” alliance with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to subvert the people’s democratic will. The Defence Headquarters denied it all.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade said: “We are not involved in politics and they should not drag us into it.

“Kaduna is a training base for the military. There could be a lot of seminars,  workshops and other forms of training, which will make officers and men to perform better. They should not give it political colouration.

“We will remain non-partisan, we shouldn’t be dragged into politics.”

The APC chair spoke at a briefing in Abuja, which was attended by four governors, a deputy governor and top leaders of the party.

He said the Service Chiefs had included “at least six weeks” in their letter to INEC demanding the postponement of the general elections. The elections were moved from February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11.

Odigie-Oyegun said: “It is important to note that the Service Chiefs’ letter to INEC demanded postponement for ‘at least’ six weeks. This, we must note, is a booby trap. Embedded in that phrase ‘at least’ is a window to push for another postponement. It is clear, however, that any further postponement can only lead to a constitutional crisis. The constitution demands at least 30 days before the handover date of May 29th.

“We have strong suspicions but hope this postponement is not part of an agenda to create a constitutional crisis in the country. We are just recently recovering from the crisis precipitated by the political crisis of 1993. We cannot afford another.

”We are all witnesses to the way INEC was intimidated into postponement of the elections despite repeated assurances of its readiness. We are aware of plans for worse intimidation in the days ahead.

“We are aware of plans to intimidate and orchestrate arrest of our leaders across the country on frivolous grounds. We are now aware of how PDP used intimidation and arrest to rig the last governorship election in Ekiti State.

“We are aware that this is the plan of the PDP. But we have no doubt that Nigerians will stand up to this. We have no doubt that the international community is watching.”

Odigie-Oyegun accused the Presidency of writing a secret memo to all divisions of the Army on how to intimidate voters in all APC-controlled states.

He said: “The greatest threat to our democracy today is the way the ruling party has compromised the leadership of the Nigerian military to serve the personal agenda of President Jonathan. This is a dangerous game.

“A recent court judgment in Sokoto clearly ruled that the military had no role in the electoral process.  What happened with this postponement is that Service Chiefs simply vetoed a democratic process on the directive of President Jonathan. We know what politicisation is doing to our once proud military institution.”

”We are aware that the Presidency has forwarded a secret memo to all commanders of divisions and battalions of Nigerian Army for a three-day strategy meeting in Kaduna from today( Monday)  on how to use the military to intimidate voters in APC states to rig election in favour of President Jonathan.

“Since recent revelations about the role of the military in Ekiti elections is demonstrable proof of how far this government  will go to compromise the military as an institution, could it be that when the Service Chiefs said they would not have enough personnel to provide security for the elections, what they are actually saying is that they would not have enough soldiers to intimidate voters in favour of the ruling party if the elections had proceeded as scheduled?”

The APC National Chairman expressed concern about the unholy alliance between the ruling PDP and the Military High Command to subvert the nation’s democracy.

He said the National Security Adviser(NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki and the Service Chiefs were economical with the truth on their alleged claim that there were security threats to the general election.

He said: “You will recall that on the 22nd of January 2015, Col. Sambo Dasuki(rtd) , the National Security Adviser (NSA), at Chatham House declared that INEC was not ready for the elections and he has therefore advised the electoral body to postpone the election.

“ The reason he gave for his unsolicited advice was that substantial number of registered voters had not collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).  He did not say anything about security concern even though Boko Haram was an issue then as it is an issue now.  So, at what point did concern over elections shift from PVC to security concern?

”When the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, visited on January 25th, he wanted a categorical commitment from President Jonathan that the elections would hold as scheduled.  The President assured the American envoy that the elections would hold. Was it that his Security chiefs had not briefed him on the security situation in the country and how this would affect the election time table at the time he was making this promise?

”On the 2nd of February,  at the National Peace Committee meeting in Abuja with the representatives of different political parties, the service chiefs gave assurances of their readiness for the elections.

“At the occasion, the Chief of Defence Staff,  Air Marshall Alex Badeh, gave assurances of the Armed Forces’s preparedness for the elections. According to him ‘even though we are busy in the Northeast, we also have capabilities across the nation’. Badeh also admitted that the role of the military is merely to support the police in providing security during elections.

“At the same event, Chief of Army Staff, General Kenneth Minimah said, ‘we are aware of the need for security, before, during and after the elections. We will deploy across the states of the Federation in areas we discover that have capacity for violence. We are prepared to ensure we have peaceful elections.”

” Also speaking at the event, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Adesola Amosu, said ‘we have commenced the airlift of the materials needed for the elections, starting from Abuja. We will continue with the elections.

” The sum total of all these is that only 12 days before the elections and despite the state of insecurity in the Northeast,  the entire military high command assured the nation of their readiness to provide security for the elections.

“However, only three days later on Friday  February 6th,  these same Service Chiefs wrote to INEC, in a letter, which by all practical purposes  could be described as blackmail, saying that they would no longer be able to provide security for the elections?  What happened in those 72 hours that brought about this complete volte face?

”It is also important to note that at the National Council of States meeting on Thursday February 5th, INEC reaffirmed its readiness and commitment to hold the elections as scheduled. Even though the Service Chiefs briefed the Council that they had security concerns, the consensus of opinion at this august body of eminent citizens was that elections should go ahead nationwide except the 14 LGAs identified as problematic by the security chiefs.

”After all, it was recalled that in 1999, elections were not held in Bayelsa State because of the activities of militants at the time, but it held all over the country. The activities of Boko Haram were clearly limited to 14 local governments in three states out of 774 local governments in 36 states and FCT. How would this then warrant the blanket postponement of elections in the entire country?

“Considering all factors building up to this postponement, it is difficult not to come to the obvious conclusion that the Military High Command is in an unholy  and dangerous alliance with the ruling party, the PDP, to subvert the democratic will of the people. We have no doubts that the letter sent to the INEC, warning it not to proceed with the elections,  emanated from the Service Chiefs’ hands of Esau and President Jonathan’s voice of Jacob.

“Isn’t it curious that only the PDP and its supporters are celebrating the postponement? We know that at the Council of State meeting, all the former Heads of State in attendance spoke against the postponement, except in the 14 LGAs and all the former  Chief Justices also concurred. And every non-PDP governor present in the meeting spoke against postponement.

Oyegun accused the PDP of plans to foist a constitutional crisis on the country, like the case in 1993 with the annulment of June 12 presidential election.

He said with the way, PDP was going, Nigeria not far from the road to Rwanda.

“Never in the history of our country had a Federal Government and the President of Nigeria so wantonly mobilised ethnic and religious sentiments to divide the people against themselves for selfish political reasons,” the APC chairman said.

“By now, everyone is aware how a close confidant of President Jonathan, Chief Edwin Clark, called for the sack and arrest of the chairman of the INEC because, according to him, the INEC chairman is working for the interest of the North. He said this under the aegis of a Southern Nigerian People’s Assembly.

”We are also aware of how the Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo, unfortunately invoked religious sentiment to campaign for his party in Niger State. The level of ethnic and religious baiting that we are currently witnessing is unprecedented in the political history of Nigeria.

“The road to Rwanda and other countries that have suffered tragic ethno-religious conflicts is not far from what PDP is currently invoking on our country. We owe it a duty to stress the point that under our watch, Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic origin or religious disposition, would be free to operate without let or hindrance.

“ Only few days ago, the Director of National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, claimed that government has uncovered a plan by Boko Haram to bomb polling centres without providing a single shred of evidence. The following day, President Jonathan declared in a church in Lagos that Boko Haram planned to bomb the entire country.

“We see this as deliberate scare-mongering to discourage Nigerians from coming out to exercise their democratic right to vote. This is quite unfortunate. The President that should be protecting the people and assuring them of their safety is now the one scaring them.”

Odigie-Oyegun urged Nigerians to regard the postponement as a sacrifice for the survival of the nation’s democracy.

He said: “This postponement comes with a huge cost to all Nigerians and every one involved, directly or indirectly, in this election, including international observers and journalists.

“However,  we should see this as the sacrifice we need to make for the survival of democracy in Nigeria. We must remain steadfast and committed to the cause of change. Like our presidential candidate, General Buhari, said, ‘our desire for change must surpass their desperation to hold on to power at all cost. We have no other country other than Nigeria, and we must remain focused and salvage it.’

“Gentlemen of the press, the contradictions we have pointed out in this briefing represent a clear and present danger to our democracy.

“It is clear that this is a surreptitious but badly disguised attempt to subvert the will of the people.  But we must assure Nigerians and friends all over the world that the power of the people is greater than the people in power. These too shall pass and we shall overcome.”

Asked if APC had lost interest in the nation’s military, Odigie-Oyegun said: “Let me loudly and emphatically say that we are largely proud of our men and women in uniform. There is no question about that. We are proud of the great job they are doing; we are proud of the sacrifice they have had to put up with in the North Eastern part of the country even when  under equipped.

“We are proud of them; we hail them for their patriotism and we know that they also share some of the pain that we are going through as a people.

“But there is no mincing of words, there is something seriously wrong at the top. There is no question at all. The unfolding events of the last few days have shown in clear terms that there is some collusion between the Service Chiefs and the present political elites in government. We will say that without any apology at all.

“It is unusual for the military that is clearly supposed to be at the background advising and assisting their Commander-in-Chief to sit down and write a letter to an independent electoral body. It is totally unheard of.”

He said he does not see the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, resigning before the general elections.

Odigie-Oyegun added: “When I attended the IPAC meeting, he was very clear that the only thing that will make him resign is if his honour is at stake. I do not see that happening now.

“We think he has done a good job, but his performance has not been faultless. But by and large, he has done a good job in the circumstances in which we operate in this country.

“In the report that he gave us, he mentioned repeatedly resource constraint, but nobody picked up on that. So, it was also certain that he was working under constraints of resources. So, by and large, we have confidence in him and we don’t expect that he will be forced out of his position.”

The briefing was attended by  a National Leader of the party,Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, Mr. Audu Ogbeh, Governors Adams Oshiomhole(Edo), Owelle Rochas Okorocha(Imo), Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe), and Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Moses Adeyemo; former governors Kayode Fayemi and Niyi Adebayo.

Others were   Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Senator George Akume, Senator Bukola Saraki, Senator Chris Ngige,  ex-Ministers Bolaji Abdullahi and Inuwa Abdulkadir, ex-PDP National Chairman, Alh. Kawu Baraje, APC Deputy Chairman(North), Senator Lawal Shuaibu, Deputy National Chairman, (South) Engr. Segun Oni, National Vice Chairman, North-East, Engr. David Lawal, National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alh. Lai Mohammed, a former Information Minister, Prince Tony Momoh, APC National Woman Leader, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani, and the Chiarman of APC in Adamawa State, Hajiya Binta Garba among others.

    ‘Buhari won’t probe Jonathan’

For the umpteenth time, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday warned against rigging next year’s presidential election, saying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is highly unpopular.

He said APC candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari would not probe President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration or past corrupt political office holders – if elected next year.

Speaking in Benin, the Edo State capital, Odigie-Oyegun chided presidential aide Doyin Okupe for comparing Jonathan with Jesus Christ.

Contrary to the fear in some quarters, the APC chair said: “The only people I can think of who will fear the Buhari presidency are those who do not want change, are those who want to continue with business as usual, are those who want to continue to profit from the level of corruption in the society.

“We will have no apologies for people like that. But it is clear that from the Buhari perspective and that of the APC, the future of the people of this country is too important for us to spend valuable time trying to dig into the past.

“The first moment of a Buhari presidency the outlook is on the future. The message will be clear; whatever you engage in before that is detrimental to the people of this country, please stop it, change has come. It is time for change and anybody who decides that he does not want to be part of change and want business-as-usual, that is his choice.

“And we are going to go into a situation post – May 2015 where the law will normally take its course, not going to be any looking back. Anybody who believes that the future of this country is greater than his personal proclivities will have nothing to fear. There will be a line drawn on the sand; on one part is the past the other side is the future.

“If you are part of the future, part of change, part of changing society from all these debilitating ills that have brought us to our kneels, you are our friend, you have nothing at all to fear. We don’t have time to go digging into the past the future of our people is the challenge that we have, not the past.”

Warning that Nigerians would resist rigging, Odigie-Oyegun said: “The other day, we watch a presidential spokesman running his mouth, comparing Jonathan to Jesus Christ. That is the highest blasphemous comment I have ever heard and the highest level of sycophancy. But they will be swept out by the power of the people and God.

“One will hope the PDP won’t rig. I hope they realise that there is a great movement for change and we hope they are wise enough, they recognise it and to allow the peoples vote to count. The international community has been sensitised. You can only rig when the people largely are on your side. I expect that they won’t be foolish enough to attempt the kind of crude and blatant rigging that can upturn the results that we expect and upturn the wishes of the people.

“I cannot predict; we are not in control of security forces; we are not in control of the police; we pray for peace, we want peace, we desire peace for the interest of the long suffering people of this country. But they will need to do something totally crude that any blind man can see for them to succeed in February 14. That, I think, is virtually impossible,” he said.
