The new shape of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national caucus emerged yesterday.

There are new faces, such as former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and former Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio.

Uduaghan’s membership of the APC was largely unknown until last night when President Muhammadu Buhari met with the party’s national caucus at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Gen. Marwa is from Adamawa, home state of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who quit the APC to pursue his presidential ambition in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was active in the CPC.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed was at the meeting. He is now the leader of the party in Kwara State, following Senate President Bukola Saraki’s defection to the PDP.

Former Ebonyi State Governor Martins Elechi, formerly of the PDP, was also at the meeting.

The Caucus meeting will prepare the ground for tomorrow’s National ExecutievCouncil (NEC) meeting which will ratify the plans for the party’s congresses and convention to pick its candidates for all the various offices, including the standard bearer in the presidential election.

A decision on whether to adopt direct primaries being advocated by National Chairman Adams Oshiohmole or indirect primaries, through the delegates system was expected to be taken.

President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the meeting held at the New Banquet Hall of the State House. Proceedings started around 8.30pm.

  • Ojukwu, Zik varsities join NASU, SSANU strike

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) and the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), both in Anambra State, have joined the nationwide strike of some academic unions.

The institutions joined under the aegis of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions comprising Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic technical (NAAS).

Members of the unions held separate meetings in their institutions where the decision to join the national body was taken.

At the end of the meeting at Ojukwu Varsity at Igbariam, the chairman of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions at the school, Andrew Okeke, said the unions had joined the strike.

The union leader described the strike as total and indefinite, adding that any member seen on the three campuses of the institution would be penalised.

In a statement, the chairperson of SSANU at UNIZIK in Awka, Njideka Nwangwu, noted that a monitoring team of the institution’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) had been sent out to monitor compliance with the strike.

She said: “The monitoring team has been set up to monitor the activities of members. Anybody who misbehaves will be severely dealt with.

“From Tuesday (yesterday), no worker of these three unions is to be seen on this campus unless that person wants to challenge his or her chi in this circumstance.

“We will wait for further directives from our national leaders. We are not going back on the decision.”

  • Ondo PDP leaders join APC, flay Mimiko’s govt

Ondo PDP leaders join APC, flay Mimiko’s govt

Akure, the Ondo State capital, yesterday stood still for the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party formally received four close allies of Governor Olusegun Mimiko and their supporters.

For hours, vehicular and human movements were halted on the popular Oba Adesida Road.

The defectors include Senator Ayo Akinyelure (a.k.a All Over); Technical Aid Corps Director- General Pius Osunyikanmi; Mrs. Cecilia Ifayase and a former Speaker of the State Assembly, Kenneth Olawale.

Their supporters, decked in various attires and vests, were in ecstasy as they welcomed their leaders into the APC.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, Akinyelure said they have come into the APC with machineries that will win elections.

Akinyelure, however, appealed to the party leaders not to see them differently.

He said they have always threaded the path of progressivism, adding that they decided to part way with Mimiko because he has left the ways of the progressives.

Osunyikanmi, a long time close associate of the governor, described Mimiko as a governor without integrity.

His words: “He is a governor who has failed our people. He is a man who I have served for years but he has consistently broken his promises.

“I commend former Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi because he refused to be bought and he has never supported illegalities.

“Former Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko Prof Femi Mimiko is the governor’s wfe. They stole our common wealth in Akungba. The Wealth Creation Agency is headed by Bolanle Olafunmiloye, who is a member of the Mimiko family. They said we are rearing 5000 cows, have you seen any cow in the town?

“They went to hire a fake professor to claim that we have the best medical facilities in Ondo State, we are all living witness, go to the General Hospital Akure. This is a 419 government.

  • Ndoma-Egba set to join APC

Barring any last minute change of mind, former Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources close to the senator said talks between him and the party’s leadership were in top gear for Ndoma-Egba’s defection.

The senator’s decision to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it was learnt, is not unconnected with the way he has been sidelined in the running of the PDP in Cross River State, where he hails from.

Almost all his supporters in the state are said to have defected to the APC and have been urging him to follow suit.

Ndoma-Egba was elected into the Senate in 2003 on the platform of the PDP to represent Cross River Central.

He became Senate Leader in 2011.

But former Governor Liyel Imoke allegedly turned the machinery of the party against him in the run-up to the 2015 general elections.

Sources in APC also said Ndoma-Egba is highly priced by the party to enable it make an in-road into Cross River State and the Southsouth.

  • Giving me conditions to join APC hypocritical, says Bamidele

Giving me conditions to join APC hypocritical, says Bamidele

House of Representatives member Opeyemi Bamidele has declared that he followed due process in joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bamidele in a statement yesterday by his media aide, Ahmed Salami, condemned the position of APC ward leaders in his hometown, Iyin-Ekiti, who listed some conditions to be fulfilled before he could be admitted into the party.

He claimed that the ward party chiefs are being used by those he described as “unscrupulous leaders”, who are afraid of his astuteness and ingenuity in politics.

The APC leaders in Iyin Wards A and B in a communique at the end of a meeting said they learnt of Bamidele’s defection in the media as the ward executives  were not carried along.

In a 10-point communique, Ope Ogundele and Folorunso Adeuyi listed certain conditions for Bamidele before he could be admitted into the party.

Bamidele described the stand of the Iyin APC leaders as “not only antithetical to democratic norms and ethos but also hypocritical smacking of ignorance about the party’s modus operandi”.

He argued that Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution vested on individual citizens, the right to join or exit any party without hindrance, once such person has not been expelled or suspended from such  party.

Bamidele, who represents Ado-Ekiti/Irepodun Ifelodun Federal Constituency, said he told the National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun and the Deputy National Chairman (South), Segun Oni, and he got their blessings.

He wondered where ward executives got the affrontery to act in such a “brazen manner” saying such an action suggests that they are ignorant of the constitution and party operations.

“How on earth“would the ward executive have more powers than Odigie-Oyegun and Oni, who gave me the green light to cross over to the APC?

The lawmaker advised the ward chairmen against committing what  he described as “insubordination  and flagrant violation of the party supremacy”  in their  disastrous quests  to massage the egos of some politically irrelevant party leaders, whose political prowess had plummeted by their  haughty and cunning actions.”

He said: “If these ward leaders had not  displayed naivety, they ought to know that going by the normal party practice and conventions, somebody of  my  political standing must contact the national leaders of the party and effect the defection after getting the go-ahead, before thinking of contacting my ward for registration.”

Bamidele urged the  ward  leaders to concentrate their energies on how to redirect the nosediving fortunes of the party, rather than  allowing some egocentric leaders to mislead them .

He said: “Where were these  people and their so- called  leaders when Bamidele was heralded in to APC rally with a standing ovation in Ado Ekiti when he came at the instance of the national leaders of the party to become part of Buhari/Osinbajo presidential campaign project in Ekiti State?

“Why did they not reject the massive contribution of Bamidele and his group between January and March 28 that led to Buhari securing 41per cent of votes in Ekiti State?

“Genuine APC leaders   in Ekiti State are happy that Bamidele is  back within the fold because they are confident that with his coming things can not be the same in Ekiti State.

“I am sure the national leaders of APC know what to do to abate this political nuisance.”

  • Iheanacho, 3 others to join F/Eagles’ camp in Germany

Iheanacho, 3 others to join F/Eagles’ camp in Germany

Nduka Ugbade, Flying Eagles’ Assistant Coach, on Friday in Abuja, said Kelechi Iheanacho and three other foreign-based players are expected to join the team’s camp in Germany.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Flying Eagles are expected to leave for Germany in a fortnight ahead of final preparations for the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The African Champions will then leave their camp in Germany for New Zealand on May 30.

Ugbade told NAN that Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City, England), Wilfred Ndidi  (KRC Genk, Belgium) Isaac Success (Granada CF, Spain) and Moses Simon (KAA Gent, Belgium) will join the Flying Eagles’ camp in Germany.

NAN recalls that after failing to properly shake off a knee injury, there were doubts that Manchester City’s teen star, Kelechi Iheanacho, may miss the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

However, Ugbade quickly responded to dispel fears that the Manchester City talent will not star for Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 World Cup on account of injury.

He revealed that the Golden Ball winner at the 2013 FIFA U-17s had resumed full training with Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad and would soon be allowed to join the U-20 team.

“Kelechi Iheanacho has started full training with Manchester City’s Academy Team. He was supposed to play Monday’s game against Chelsea U-18s, but was dropped at the last minute because the medical expert wanted to prevent him from suffering a relapse.

“All things being equal, he’ll be in action when the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final is played on the 27th of April. The word from Manchester City is that if Iheanacho comes through the Chelsea game unscathed, he would be allowed to attend the Flying Eagles training camp in Germany,’’ he said.

  • Thousands join Oyo APC

ThousandS of defectors from Accord, Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and KOWA Party have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.

The defectors were led by Dr. Adegoke Adeyemo aka Okebadan, Mr. Olawale Oladoja, a former director of Odu’a Investment , Mr. Musa Kazeem Obisesan (Accord), Mrs. Olubunmi Oladeji Bamikole, popularly known as ‘For the Mama Ke’ (PDP), Mr. Anthony Makinde (KOWA) and Mr. Agboola Oni (Labour).

The followers of a late Accord stalwart, Mrs. Bola Amole, who died mysteriously on the eve of her planned defection to APC, led by Alhaja Sola Olasunkanmi and Alhaji Salawu Taiwo wept as they announced their exit from the party.

The ceremony also witnessed a solidarity rally and endorsement of Governor Abiola Ajimobi by members of the state chapter of Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders and Operators of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), the Okada Union within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Mrs. Bamikole hinged her defection and that of other PDP members on what she called “lack of discipline and integrity among the leadership of our former party”.

The endorsement rally also featured members of  the Islamic Musicians’ Association of Nigeria (ISMAN), led by the state Chairman, Alfa Sarafadeen Bembe Oru, who pledged their support for the governor.

Ajimobi promised them equal opportunities and urged them to work harmoniously with other party members to ensure the APC’s success during the general elections.

  • Ajayi unlikely to join Eagles

    Ajayi unlikely to join Eagles

Reports suggesting that Arsenal central defender Semi Ajayi will link up with the Super Eagles squad in Abu Dhabi next month for exhibition matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Mali might not come to pass.

Assuming Nigeria had qualified for the 2015 African Cup of Nations(AFCON), the English Premier League side would have no choice than to release the former Flying Eagles stopper or face the wrath of football’s governing body, FIFA.

In theory, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) cannot twist the arm of Arsenal to part with Semi Ajayi, as the aforementioned games are outside the international window.

The 21-year-old’s agent, who is a man of few words, confirmed as much after he strongly hinted that his client may be unavailable for the friendly matches.

“I am not sure Semi will feature in the games in January. At the moment, everything is up in the air,” said Semi Ajayi’s agent to SL10.ng.

18 months have now passed since the centre back trained with the Flying Eagles, only for him to be dropped by John Obuh before the squad left for Turkey for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Semi Ajayi confided to SL10.ng that his priority is to represent the country’s Olympic team.

3SC’ Amaniyi, 9 others join Kaduna Utd

The management of Kaduna United have beefed up the squad with  an additional 10 players ahead of the kick off of the Glo Premier League on Sunday.

The club’s media officer, Uba Ibrahim, who disclosed this to SportingLife, said the decision was taken to address the dwindling situation in the club.

Kaduna United is currently occupying 18th position on the log, the situation, according to Uba, did not go down well with the club’s management.

The new players are David Amaniyi (3SC), Sumaila Sulaiman (Gombe United), Arinze Nwaogwu (Bayelsa United), Solomon Bitrus (Plateau United) and Emeka Ekueme (Akwa United).

Others are Musa Sulaiman (FC Taraba), AbdulRasaq Yahyah (former player), Nasiru Shehu (Spotlight), Nasiru Jarmai (feeder team) and Collins Amadi (South Africa club).

Uba informed SportingLife that the new players are the last of the registered players for the first stanza.

“We have 10 new players in the team now. We registered 32 for the first stanza instead of 42 players. So we have the remaining players to complete the number. We are doing everything within our capacity to ensure that we change the situation in the team.

Uba also disclosed that the club are yet to release any players due to the fact that the club still owes them.

“Ordinarily, when you bring in new players you are supposed to allow some players to go but in our own situation we are yet to do that. We still owe them and it will be unfair to now ask them to go,” Uba said.

  • 236 PDP members join Kwara APC

236 PDP members join Kwara APC

Two hundred and thirty six members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State.

The defectors attributed their decision to PDP leaders’ insensitivity to their plight.

The defectors, mostly youths from Ajanaku ward in Ilorin South Local Government Area claimed to be members of the Solidarity Oba Abu Youth Vanguard.

They were received by the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Sulaiman Yusuf.

The defectors claimed that PDP “lacks organisation, team work, credibility and service to humanity”.

They lamented that the party leaders “lacks sincerity and do not have their interest at heart. They only make empty promises to gain popularity and followership among the youth of the community”.

The group’s Chairman, Usman Olaiya, explained that they have nothing to show for their support for PDP leaders.

Olaiya said: “They are so self-centred, they only want to benefit from us and care less about the situation of our group or the ward we represent.”
