So, you’re saying you’re comfortable not being sexually active. You’re so much more relaxed. There are things for dryness. Lubricants for both parties.”

  • Ambode’s wife, Joke Silva, others inspire LASU students

Two Nollywood icons Joke Silva, actor Segun Arinze and a pilot, Enitan Dan-Faparusi have given success tips to students of the Lagos State University during the institution’s second Distinguished Lecture Series held at its Ojo campus.

The lecture was themed: “Life skills education and entrepreneurship learning in the 21st century.”

Dan-Faparusi, a law graduate of LASU and a US-trained pilot, who set the tone for the event, made the hall reverberate while displaying her LASU degree certificate in addition to  the credentials she obtained as a certified aviationist from the US.

According to her, the gesture was to demonstrate that products of the institution could be much better than her, provided they could unlock and unleash their potentials.

Dan-Faparusi, who reeled out her name and matriculation no of her alma mater, admonished the students to inculcate in them virtues such as resilience, self confidence critical thinking, empathy, problem-solving ability, self confidence, time management, optimism and faith, describing them as core values for an aspiring entrepreneur.

Dan-Faparusi who confessed that she had no science background, added how her creativity and determination, saw her through while taking varying courses in aviation in the US.

“Naturally, I am not science inclined. I studies law and I was working in Nigeria. And then, my husband was to be transferred to the US to handle a project and the realisation hit me in the face that I had to give up my job here in Nigeria and travel with him. It was while I was in the Us that the idea to become an aviationist struck me.

“And then I realised I not only had to start learning basic sciences but also the rudimentary; all those little things about sciences I used to run away from when I was ins secondary school. So my children and husband became my tutors. I had to be humble enough especially when learning from my kids because oftentimes they would say ‘Mummy you are wrong’ and I would say “don’t say that; I’m your mother’.

Silva admonished the students to combine education with their divine endowments.

She noted that in this 21 century, employers are desirous of graduates who could demonstrate multiples skills in addition to what they study, adding that potential entrepreneurs also need multiple skills to have an edge in business.

“What makes you more viable as a person is not the certificate that you have, but additional skills acquired while getting the certificate,” she said.

She emboldened them not to dread future, but take advantage of the innovativeness and ICT that call the shots in this era. She warned them not to allow Nigeria’s harsh economic realities, put them off.

“Despite our economic challenges, you must all see Nigeria as a country with boundless opportunities. So the fact that you put your hands in one or two businesses but failed is not excuse not to try again. Learning is a key to success, and we cannot learn unless we fail. When you fail, you learn, then you can succeed.”

Arinze encouraged the students to be focused, open their minds to flexibility, and be ready to ask questions about grey areas.

Arinze pinpointed planning, education and skill acquisition as keys to attaining the zenith.

He said they would experience frustrations from friends and relatives as they move along the path of life; nonetheless, they must not be distracted, but be determined.

Earlier, wife of the Lagos State Governor Mrs Bolanle Ambode, herself an alumnae, warned students to stay off drugs and bad company, regardless of circumstances.

“No matter the peer pressure, emotional challenge or psychological issues you may be facing, I urge you to say no to drugs, cultism and other vices. One moment of indiscretion is enough to ruin a life; but l pray that your lives will not be ruined. I will advise you to make the best use of the knowledge gained today for your self-development tomorrow.”

She recalled her days as LASU undergraduate,  , adding that the ambience then was not as good as now that the current management is fashioning a new direction for the institution.

She said the fact that many products of the school have and are still gaining global recognistion is a testimony to the realisation of the dream of the founding fathers, who had a vision of academic distinction for all students that would pass through the university.

In his brief address, the VC Fagbohun sProf Olanrewaju Fagbohun, said the mentoring came at a time Lagos State government is committed to tackling youth unemployment.

Fagbohun said CDC was established with a mandate to entrench student’s potential towards charting a career pathways and producing employable and marketable graduates for global relevance.

Having been screened in film festivals such as Cannes Film Festival, Silicon Valley African Film Festival, Durban Film Festival, British Urban Film Festival and others,  ‘Potato Pohato’, by Ghanaian producer, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, centred on divorce, but told in a comic way, is set to hit Nigerian cinemas from November 24, 2017.

On her role as the mother-in-law of Tony played by OC UKeje, Joke Silva says, “I read the script and I knew it was something I wanted to be part of.  Many times, mothers-in-law are portrayed as difficult women who never relate well with their child’s spouse. ‘Potato Potahto’, shows another side to this; it shows a woman who takes her son-in-law as her son. It portrays a woman who allows her daughter make her choices, while gently nudging her on the right path. It is a truly wonderful movie.”

For OC Ukeje, the professionalism of the job, attracted him to accepting the role, “First of all I have a bias for Shirley Frimpong-Manso because she is a great person, an accomplished director and her work is pretty defined. Her team is strong and professional. And I had the advantage of working with Joselyn Dumas on a project previously so it was easy to tap into aspects of our chemistry. All those elements came together to make it a good call.”

According to the producer Shirley Frimpong-Manso, “The movie was really just wanting to write something fun: A romantic comedy that treats a serious topic differently.

The movie tells the story of a couple, who decide to still live in their matrimonial home even after they split.

‘Potato Potahto’ will also be released in South African cinemas on November 24th and Ghanaian cinemas on November 30th, 2017.

  • JOKE SILVA: Marriage is not do or die

JOKE SILVA: Marriage is not do or die

She has several movies and awards to her name, yet veteran actress Joke Silva is not resting on her oars. In this interview with ADENIYI ADEWOYIN, she speaks on some of the precautions to be taken to prevent domestic violence, among other issues.

WAS acting what you set out to do?

Oh yes. I knew from about the age of 10 and my parents supported me from the schools that I went to. After my A levels, I prayed. I asked God for confirmation and He said yes and I spoke to my father and he said, ‘take a gap for a year and see if this industry is yours.’ I’m talking of like late 70s and early 80s which wasn’t common in our time and they allowed me to do it. When they found out that this was what I wanted to do and enjoyed doing, they said ‘okay, go to drama school.’

Were your parents not bothered then because what most parents wanted for their kids was to be engineers, doctors and accountants?

I think what bothered them was the concern that would I be able to make a living out of this profession I was going into. They knew the talent was there. They nurtured the talents, they encouraged the talent but I think the idea was to encourage the talent to be a hobby. My mother played the piano as a hobby, so it was something like that for them.

They wanted to see how stressful the industry could be, how uncertain, in the sense that you don’t always have work all the time but unfortunately for them, in my gap year I was working right through. Sometime, I had like three jobs at the same time. I was working so often and they saw that I loved it.

You are one of the very few celebrities whose marriage has stood the test of time. But nowadays, we hear a lot of break-up among celebrities. Does that not bother you?

Not particularly. But I think people should know what their threshold of acceptability is. I think sometimes in this society, we tend to say you must stay in marriage no matter what it does to you. You hear some women who have stayed with their husbands right throughout the difficult times and when their husbands die they are so bitter because it seems that they wasted their life. This is something that the younger generations don’t know. That being said, I think there is need for both sides to see each other as human beings.

Do you have a pet name for your husband?

Oh yes, his name is Omoboy.

Are there moments that it becomes heavy to call him Omoboy because you are angry or you are having issues?

When Omoboy becomes Olu, that’s wahala (laughs) and same with me, my pet name is Iya but when he says Joke, I know I’m in trouble.

What are your thoughts on domestic violence?

I think I’m very happy that more women are coming out and talking about it. The partners must give themselves space once the violence starts. I think it is the most spirit destroying action that one can take. I think it is sad when relationships get to that point.

Can a woman really provoke a man into beating her?

I think in relationships, especially when we are angry with each other I think it gets to that point when you understand that you should withdraw. Like sometimes when I counsel young people, I tell them that there is a tone that you recognise that if I push any further I will be in trouble. When you hear that you will hold, you will see it. It’s in the eyes, you can’t hide it.

There is something I also want to mention that there is a violence that people don’t associate with domestic violence and that is emotional violence. Emotional violence is a violence that is so deadly you don’t see it. It damages the person psychologically and I think the onus is on those who love the
