    Breaking: Jonathan drops sports minister

President Goodluck Jonathan has relieved  the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi of his job.

Dr. Tamuwo Danago was sworn in as the new Sports Minister  along with ten other new ministers on Wednesday by President Jonathan who gave no indication of Abdullahi’s fate.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati later confirmed to reporters that Abdullahi has been dropped  from the cabinet.

The former minister was not in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

The ex-National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau (Zamfara State) is now the Minister of Defence while Senator Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos) is  Minister of State for Defence.

Ambassador Aminu Wali (Kano) is the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Wakil (Borno) is the Minister of State for Power and Abduljelili Oyewale Adesiyan (Osun)  Minister of Police Affairs.

The new Minister of Land and Housing is Mrs. Akon Etim Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom) and Laurencia Labaran Mallam (Kaduna) is the Minister of Environment.

Asabe Asmau Ahmed (Niger) in the Minister of State for Agriculture, Boni Haruna (Adamawa), Minister of Youth Development and  Dr Khaliru Alhassan (Sokoto State) is the new Minister of State for Health.

After swearing in the ministers before FEC meeting started, President Jonathan charged the new ministers to see the new appointments into public office as a public trust and truly serve the people.

Stressing that the administration is emphasising on transformation, he urged the new ministers to ensure they listen to the people and address their concerns.

He said: “At the end, if you cannot say that you have brought innovations to your ministry, then you have failed. If you are not able to detect errors in the ministry, then you have failed. It is your responsibility to make positive changes.”

Urging them not to cause problems in their ministries, he hoped that they will bring additional values to their ministries.

He maintained that all the ministers are eminently qualified to be Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Stating that more new ministers will be announced next week, Jonathan said that he will reserve his comments on the appointments till next week.

  • Senate comes out of their reactionary closet

Senate comes out of their reactionary closet

Last week, I indicated in this place that the Nigerian Senate had unashamedly become a unit of the Jonathan presidency. I was led to that conclusion by the way senators spoke and behaved over the controversial removal of the CBN governor, not because any of them openly confessed to loving the unparliamentary tactics of hanging Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. But since I made what I at first feared was a sweeping conclusion, ranking senators have openly and proudly acknowledged their attachments to the Jonathan presidency, an identification they have neither bothered to conceal nor explain nor even anchor on any reasonable foundation.

We have both Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Victor Ndoma-Egba to thank for opening our eyes. If anyone should say Jonathan did not act within his powers in suspending Mallam Sanusi, argued Senator Abaribe disdainfully, they are making ‘spurious and self-serving’ arguments. Quite right, deadpanned Senator Ndoma-Egba combatively and with a barely disguised hint of exasperation. “Senator Abaribe is the official spokesman of the Senate,” he summed up. He obviously offered this reiteration for effect, in case anyone thought the jaunty senator spoke only his mind and not that of the majority of the Senate. Now that we know where the Senate stands, and how self-assuredly they array themselves against common sense and the people, it is up to us in the next polls to throw them out or watch our democracy get sucked into the autocratic vortex being created by the likes of Dr Jonathan.

The Sanusi affair is of course not the first time the Senate has acted with reactionary zeal and insouciance. They worked hand in glove with the president on the budget and confirmation controversy, and they angrily endorsed the president’s position on the Rivers State affair, even to the extent of turning a blind eye on the indignity meted out to one of their own, Senator Magnus Ibe. At first I thought there was no end to the Senate’s conservatism; now I think there is no end to its reactionary proclivity.

2015: Jonathan weighs four strategies ahead of declaration

President Goodluck Jonathan is testing the waters with four strategies ahead of his formal declaration for the 2015 presidential race, it was gathered yesterday.

He has decided to run with Vice-President Namadi Sambo, sources also said and shed light on why the President jettisoned the promise he allegedly made to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo that he would not go for a second term.

A Presidency source said that apart from such a promise being unknown to the 1999 Constitution, it is also untenable under the “principle of equitable estopel.”

The Namadi Sambo Committee set up by the President to work out modalities for his declaration is reported to have recommended three strategies to the President to test the waters before formally delaring his intention to seek re-election.

The President accepted all three and added one.

The strategies are: holding rallies in some states to receive defectors; zonal rallies to mobilise PDP members and gauge their feelings; and visitation to the Presidential Villa by governors/groups/ opinion leaders to persuade Jonathan to go for a second term.

The fourth strategy designed by the President’s kitchen cabinet is intermittent worship in some selected churches of different missions to “win their sympathy subtly ahead of 2015.”

A reliable source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Going by the proposal of the Declaration Committee, the President may make his second term intention known during the third anniversary of his administration in May or early June.

“The committee has however set machinery in motion for Jonathan to test the waters in three ways ahead of the declaration. The strategies are defection rallies in some; proposed zonal rallies to mobilise PDP members; and visitations to the Presidential Villa.

“After the three strategies have been executed, the President will then come out to declare his intention to seek a second term mandate.

“And judging from the defection rallies, the journey to 2015 has started. Although PDP has not been campaigning, the body language of its leaders at the rally suggested that it has kicked off the race for 2015.”

On the fourth strategy, the source added: “It is a product of the kitchen cabinet of the President.”

Asked why the President will contest in 2015 in spite of a promise to ex-President Obasanjo that he would spend a term in office, the source added: “The 1999 Constitution guarantees the President’s right to contest for a second term in office. And a constitution is superior to any other promise or so-called agreement which no one has produced.

“The President will also be relying on the principle of equitable estopel to seek a second term. A promise is a shield but not a sword. What it means is that a promise is lesser in strength than a right. The President deserves the right to seek a second term; no promise can override it.”

It was learnt that the President is disposed to retaining Vice-President Namadi Sambo as his running mate in 2015, contrary to the initial push by some forces in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Prior to the decision of the President to retain Sambo, there were speculations that either Governor Ibrahim Shema or Governor Isa Yuguda might picked.

A presidency source said: “I think the President has decided to stick with Sambo as his running mate. This was why he appointed Sambo as the chairman of the Declaration Committee.

“In fact, Shema and Yuguda are members of the Declaration Committee, foreclosing the chances of the governors becoming the VP.

“The stable presidency which Jonathan has enjoyed with Sambo was a critical factor in guiding Jonathan to make up his mind.

“Instead of what obtained during Obasanjo’s presidency, Sambo has been trailing the shadows of his boss. He is not rocking the boat in any manner.

“The recent political gains in the North-West by Sambo also encouraged the President to give his deputy a second chance too.”

Jonathan, Mu’azu to visit Ilorin on Monday

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State is awaiting the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu to the state on Monday.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the PDP in the state, Solomon Edoga, disclosed this to reporters in Ilorin, the state capital yesterday.

He said the existing Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency (KWASSA) law would not prevent the party from mounting billboards bearingt the photographs of the President and the PDP National Chairman in different parts of the state because the party in the state enjoys a good relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “The government has cooperated so far and I believe the governor will be there that day to welcome the President.

“You will recall that we wrote to the state government and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has graciously approved the use of the Metropolitan Square.

“Our relationship with the various government agencies and parastatals has been very wonderful and they are willing to do whatever is possible to ensure the success of the presidential visit.

“I have met personally with the DG KWASSA and he assured that presidential visit is unique. It is one opportunity in a life’s time and that the billboards and photographs of Mr. President will not be touched.

“We are also willing to cooperate and extend fellowship and fraternity to KWASSA.”

He, however, warned anyone planning to pull down PDP’s billboards ahead of the presidential visit to have a rethink.

He said: “Mr. President is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His constituency includes Kwara State. But I am made to understand that some persons are toying with our billboards.

“Let me warn that no man can touch the billboard of the President. Any attempt by any individual or groups, by whatever name, or organs of government to tamper with the photographs of Mr. President, or to deface them or render them useless will be visited with appropriate action, because for me that amounts to treason. It amounts to plotting a coup against the President. We will not allow that to happen.”

  • Jonathan’s broadcast on centenary misplaced, says APC

Jonathan’s broadcast on centenary misplaced, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for devoting his broadcast to the nation on Wednesday night to the centenary celebrations instead of the national tragedy involving the cold-blood murder murder of over 40 school children in Yobe state.

In a statement in Lagos yesterday yesterday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the President’s action sends a wrong signal to the world about the value which the Nigerian government places on the lives of the nation’s children.

It wondered what was so important about the centenary celebrations that it would be elevated over and above what in any nation would be considered a monumental tragedy, describing the President’s broadcast as insensitive, misplaced, and an embarrassment to the nation.

‘’Even as the nation is still counting the death toll from Monday night’s senseless and gruesome murder of our children, and the ceaseless killings of innocent civilians before that, the President has already switched into a celebratory mood, dwelling on the money-wasting centenary-celebrations instead of leading a clearly distraught nation in mourning.

‘’Nothing better illustrates the fact that the President showed more concern about the centenary celebrations than the calamity that befell the nation than the mention, in only about three paragraphs, of the tragedy in a speech that spanned over 40 paragraphs.

‘’This is very sad indeed, considering that President Jonathan is the head of a government that has failed woefully in ensuring the welfare and security of Nigerians, especially those of our children, which is the very reason for the existence of any government,’’ APC said.

The party said now that the President has goofed again, he should quickly make amends by visiting the scene of the tragedy to empathize with the families of the victims as well as the government and people of the state, which is what any leader worth his salt will do under the circumstance.

It said in case President Jonathan is still in doubt on whether or not to take a trip to Yobe, and indeed Borno where hundreds of innocent citizens have been dispatched to their early graves by rampaging insurgents in the past few weeks, he should take a cue from what other

Presidents do in times like this.

‘’In the US, for example, President Barack Obama was his country’s ‘consoler in chief’ as he visited scenes of the tragedies that have occurred in his country since he assumed office, whether it is the school massacre in Connecticut, the mass shooting in Fort Hood,Texas or the tornado in Joplin, Missouri.

‘’While the nation waits for the President to hit the road to Yobe and

Borno, we call on the federal government to massively scale down the centenary celebrations, if it does not want to cancel them. It is incongruous, unconscionable, unacceptable and an assault on our collective humanity to be celebrating, throwing fireworks and popping champagne cocks when the ashes of our children, who were slaughtered and burnt to death for no fault of theirs, are still so fresh.

‘’We should not do what will amount to dancing on the graves of the children whom we have collectively failed. Yes, we cannot bring those children back to life, but we can at least soothe the pains of their families through genuine empathy and soberness,’’ APC said.

2015: World leaders task Jonathan on free, fair elections

The United Kingdom (UK) and Germany were among the world leaders that urged President Goodluck Jonathan to put everything in place to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2015.

They spoke in Abuja at the Nigeria’s Centenary conference themed: “Human Security, Peace and Development: Agenda for 21st Century Africa.”

Nigeria, they said, should strive to get it right in the forthcoming elections in order to continue to be role model for other African countries.

U.K Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, who represented the British Prime Minister at the conference said, “By virtue of her scale and energy, Nigeria could lead the way. Next February’s elections will be a vital milestone – Nigeria’s fifth consecutive Presidential election under civilian rule.”

“Mr. President, you have committed yourself to ensuring that the elections are free and fair. I am confident Nigerians will accept nothing less. And in doing so, you and your government could be a role model for many other African governments.”

He went on: “I am honoured, Mr President, to speak today of Nigeria and Africa. I am always struck by Nigeria’s youth and vitality. I believe strongly that your country, and the countries represented here today, should be viewed through the lens of promise and ambition. I want to take this opportunity to focus on the great future ahead of Nigeria and its African counterparts face.”

“It is a future that is closely linked to the achievement of prosperity, stability and democracy. And I believe that, as is the case in Europe, it is the choices African leaders make in these three areas that will determine Africa’s future.

“Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, said on Independence Day in 1960 that Nigeria’s relations with the UK were “always as friends.” That is as true now as 54 years ago.

“Our relationship is rooted in our joint history; in the large and important Nigerian community in the UK; the deep and expanding trade relationship; and our countless educational, sporting and cultural connections.

“So it is exciting to recognize, as we stand at the dawn of a new century for Nigeria, that the future brings with it extraordinary possibilities for your country, and for many African nations.

“In 1914, the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates and Lagos, brought together peoples, territory and resources that had never before considered themselves as having mutual interests. That brought challenges- and perhaps still does.

“But Nigeria’s diversity has brought the Country strength, resilience and a multitude of talent. It has growing international influence as a peacekeeper, as a leader in the African Union and on the United Nations Security Council. The Country has become the driving economic and political force of its region.

“I believe we share a vision that we want to see realised in our lifetime. It is the vision of independent, thriving and dynamic African countries, overcoming poverty, famine and conflict.”

Yobe: We’ll bring murderers to justice – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathanon Thursday promised that no resource will be spared in bringing to justice all murderers engaging in violent activities in the northern part of the country.

The Boko Haram sect and other terrorists groups have killed thousands of Nigerians, maimed and destroyed billions of naira worth of properties.

Speaking at the Centenary Conference in Abuja, themed: “Human Security, Peace and Development: Agenda for the 21st Century,” Jonathan said that Africa must address some fundamental challenges to the continent’s human security, peace and development.

He said, “But as I address you today, I have a heavy heart. Two days ago, terrorists invaded a secondary school and murdered innocent children in Yobe State, while they slept. The children, the hopes of their parents and the future leaders of our dear nation, had their hopes and dreams snuffed out, leaving behind grieving families, schoolmates, communities and a sad nation.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with their families at this difficult moment of loss. This gruesome and mindless act of savagery is not Nigerian. It is not African. Let me assure all Nigerians that we will spare no resource in bringing those murderers to justice.

According to him, terrorism which is a global menace has extended its tentacles to Africa and Nigeria.

Stressing that the menace of the use of small arms and light weapons is on the rise, he said that out of the 500 million illegal small arms and light weapons in the world, an estimated 100 million are in Africa, with 10 per cent in West Africa.

Jonathan said that the cost of wars and insurgencies are too high and that Africa has been estimated to lose $18 billion per year from wars and insurgencies.

“In concert with our regional and global partners, we will continue to respond strategically and decisively to this scourge, and together with our people we shall end the killings and bring terrorism to an end.

“Your Excellencies, let us work together across boundaries, not only to coordinate and strengthen our defences, but also to address any socio-economic roots on which these extreme ideologies thrive.

“Terrorism must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. We all must work together, collectively, to rid our world of haters of peace, who use terror to maim, kill, instill fear and deny people their rights to peace and security.

He said that greater regional cooperation in intelligence gathering and control of insurgents will not only ensure Nigeria’s security, but also the security of her neighbours.
