CHAN Eagles praise Jonathan for cash gifts

Nigeria players from the recent Championship of African Nations (CHAN) have praised President Goodluck Jonathan for rewarding them for placing third at the tournament.

President Jonathan showered cash on the Eagles with coach Stephen Keshi receiving 1.5 million naira, his assistants got a million naira, same as the players. Other backroom staff got half a million naira each.

The president told the team when he hosted them on Thursday in Abuja he was inspired by their sensational comeback against Morocco in the quarterfinal of the tournament, where they came from three goals down to win 4-3.

Warri Wolves forward Joshua Obaje told MTNFootball.com the team appreciate the president’s cash gift.

“I am so happy with the reception and the reward given to us by the president. I really appreciate what the president did to us to recognise our efforts at CHAN. And his words of encouragement were great,” Obaje told MTNFootball.com

In same vein, reserve goalkeeper Dele Alampasu told MTNFootball.com he was excited to be part of the great occasion.

“I am happy with the recognition from the president. It was a nice reception and I happy to be involved,” he said.

Rangers midfielder Ugonna Uzochukwu added: “I feel so happy with the reception and the reward. It was a nice experience for me.”

CHAN Eagles’ largesse: Ebonyi fans hail Jonathan

Football fans in Ebonyi have hailed the historic presidential reward for the bronze medal-winning Super Eagles at the recent African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday hosted the team in Abuja. He gave N1 million to each of the players and assistant coaches, while the Head Coach, Stephen Keshi got 1.5 million.

Some of the fans commended the president for the gesture in separate interviews with NAN on Friday in Abakaliki and noted that it would help to reposition sports in the country.

Macson Uche, a sports historian, said this was the first time in the annals of the nation’s football that a bronze medal-winning team would receive financial reward from the government.

“The Super Eagles team who won bronze at AFCON in 1992, 2002 and 2006 did not receive cash rewards. The 2004 team received a ‘Presidential Handshake’ from former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The above listed teams may have been rewarded by individuals and corporate organisations but this is the first time the team will receive as much as N1 million each,” he said.

In the same vein, Obinna Ogba, a former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Vice-Chairman, described President Jonathan as the best ‘sporting president’ in the nation’s history.

“This is the only president that rewards athletes whether they win medals or not. This motivates them to represent the country creditably in competitions. Football stakeholders in the country should reciprocate this gesture by maintaining the prevailing peace in sports administration for improved performances by our teams,” he said.

Justin Mmegwa, a footballer, called on the country’s teams to always exhibit the “Never Say Die’’ attitude they are known for.

“The President was particularly impressed by the CHAN Eagles’ come-back from a 0-3 deficit in the quarter-final against Morocco to eventually win 4-3. I am sure that the feat propelled him to reward the team as he uses it to preach on national resilience and integration during public speeches,” he said.

Christopher Agbii, a businessman, called on the president to extend such gesture to athletes who participate in other sports and not only football.

“Equal treatment to all athletes will correct the impression that football is the only recognised sport in the country and will serve as a source of motivation for the athletes,” he said.

Jacinta Ukah, a youth activist, called on the president to personally intervene in the nagging issue of hiring a foreign assistant for Keshi as the team prepares for the World Cup.

“The NFF leadership has debunked the issue but such at this critical period of World Cup preparations will constitute undue distraction for the coaches,” she said.

Jonathan’s attitude to Poly, Colleges of Education worrisome, says COEASU

President Goodluck Jonathan came under fire yesterday over the running of the education system in the country.

Colleges of Academic Staff Union (COEASU) accused Jonathan of operating an elitist government by ignoring the masses in its educational drive.

COEASU President, Emmanuel Asagha, who addressed newsmen at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) College of Education, Zuba, described the attitude as unfair and capable of destroying the system.

According to him, government has not accorded the two sub-sectors respect enjoyed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) because it feels only the children of the peasants, artisans and the less privileged attend them.

Asagha’s word: “Nigerian government is running not only an elitist government but a class government. The specification is so clear. When ASUU is on strike, everybody gets concerned.

“Certain persons serving in the present government asked me to suspend the strike because I may not have the sympathy that ASUU has gotten. I told him it is because he does not have a child in the Colleges of Education. When ASUU is on strike, they will even call the governor of a state to mediate.

“ASUP has been on strike since October, nobody called them to anywhere. The more we (COEASU) met with government, the more the memorandum we signed and the more we got betrayed”, he lamented.

Asagha said the money required to bail the Federal Colleges of Education was just about N30 billion, “which is a small money for the ruling party”.

Asagha likened the problems in the education sector to the crisis in the North and South-South where issues had been left unattended to overtime.

“We believe one day God will send us somebody that has an interest in the system and save the masses. We would have had peace in the North and South South today if people had heeded warnings.

“We will carry the protest to the presidency and not to the National Assembly. We are going to write the security agencies, nobody should beat a child and ask the child not to cry.”

Jonathan assures of enhanced welfare for Nigerians

President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday to improve the living standard of Nigerians.

The President restated his administration’s commitment to consolidate the reforms in the Housing sector to address the huge deficit in the country.

Jonathan spoke at the inauguration of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria’s (FMBN’s) Aviation Village in Abuja and the National Housing Fund (NHF) e-card scheme.

He said the implementation of the recommendations of the 2011 housing retreat in Abuja gave birth to the new housing units.

According to him, the National Policy on Housing, adopted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in 2012, would also drive the reforms because mortgage institutions were being strengthened to accommodate low-income earners.

Jonathan hailed the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and FMBN for initiating and financing the Aviation Village project.

The President described the project as one of the products of the reforms in the housing sector.

He said: “I assure you that improving the living standards of Nigerians is an imperative which we are resolutely pursuing.”

On the NHF e-card scheme, he said it was an effective tool for NHF contributors to access and monitor their contributions and transactions with the fund.

Jonathan explained that part of his administration’s objectives was to promote openness in government business, boost contributors’ confidence and encourage defaulters to comply by making their contributions when due.

The President hailed the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement, which led to the birth of the Aviation Village.

He said: “Our intention is not to create a government monopoly but to encourage the private sector to drive the process while we provide the right policies and environment.”

On the few number of houses being inaugurated, Jonathan stressed that “what makes change is not the big things we do but the little things we do and do them well.”

The President said the ability to recreate and replicate small housing estates in more places was better than one large estate of thousands of houses that may not keep provide jobs for Nigerians who work there.

He said: “I am pleased to inaugurate the Aviation Village, a residential housing estate developed for Nigerians under our housing scheme and to formerly launch the National Housing Fund’s electronic card. The significance of both projects is better appreciated when we recall that only three weeks ago, on January 16, I launched the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company.

“Together, there are strong indicators of the quick wins emerging from the invigorated approach this administration has adopted in addressing the housing challenges facing our people. Having listened to others who spoke, you will say that these are government functionaries. But when you listen to Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar (Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president), you will not but agree that we are working.

“In every economy, the housing sector plays a critical role in economic empowerment, job creation and wealth generation. For this administration, improving the living standards of our people is a cardinal objective for which we are committed, and we are pursuing the development of the Nigerian housing sector under our transformation agenda.

“Contributors will not only find the e-card useful in managing their fund but also boost their confidence in the national housing scheme. Those who are still in breach of the law by not contributing should now be comfortable to comply since they are assured of the safety and proper application of their money.”

    Group lauds Jonathan, Sambo

An umbrella body of 105 youth groups in the North, Arewa Youth Vanguard, has supported the measure adopted by the Goodluck Jonathan/Namadi Sambo administration in tackling the challenges confronting the region.

The group also described the planned national conference as an opportunity for all strata of the state to contribute toward amicably resolving the challenges bedevilling the country.

In a communiqué after its national executive working meeting by Jamillu Abdulahi and Annum Jethro Terhile, chairman and secretary, the group noted that the establishment of Almajirin nomadic schools would stamp out ignorance among youths.

The communiqué reads: ‘We, members of Voice of Arewa Youths, have taken a deep and patriotic assessment of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President, Namadi Sambo and hereby to commend their commitment to peace in the region and Nigeria in general.

‘That the establishment of Almajiri and nomadic schools will put to rest the era when perpetrators of violence in the region often capitalise on misinforming ignorant youths, who were mostly illiterates.”

The group further lauded the administration for the proposed N2 billion counterpart initiative funding for a special economic development, urging it increase the amount to cover the huge loss the region has witnessed due to the activities of insurgents.

    • Seven back room staff N.5m each

Others included N500,000 each for Team Secretary, Team Doctor, Team Physiotherapist, Team curator, Media Officer,Technical, Team coordinator.

The President, who announced the N31 million cash rewards during the Presidential Reception for the team at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, said that the supporters will be rewarded at a later date.

He said: “As a sign of our appreciation, we have decided to give you very little token because ‘Thank You’ does not go to the market.

“We feel like welcoming you in a golden way even though you got bronze because of your outstanding performance in the march against Morocco.

“Although you did not get gold, you got the hearts of Nigerians.Your achievements speak volume. You may not have won the championship but you performed gallantly.”

He added: “I think we are succeeding in sports because of the strong link between the executive and the parliament.

“We are reaping the dividends of our investments in sports. Although there is still much more to be done. Let me encourage you to remain committed and disciplined.”

The Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi applauded the decision of the President to host the Super Eagles home based inspite of winning bronze medal just like the teams that won gold in the past.

“You are the best President sports has ever had in Nigeria,” he stated.

Among those who graced the occasion included the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam and some members of the cabinet.

  • Jonathan to anti-graft agencies: prove Fed Govt’s resolve in fighting corruption

Jonathan to anti-graft agencies: prove Fed Govt’s resolve in fighting corruption

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to prove to Nigerians that his administration is fighting corruption.

The President spoke yesterday in Abuja at the swearing-in of the chairman and members of the National Population Commission (NPC), a member of ICPC and two new special advisers.

The ceremony took place before the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Those sworn in were Eze Iheoma (NPC chairman); Bala Qbayen and Aliyu Kwali (NPC members); Bako Abdullahi (ICPC member) and Senator Suleiman Ajadi and Fidelia Njeze (special advisers for National Assembly and New Partnership for Africa’s Development NEPAD).

The President faulted remarks claiming that his body language showed that he was not fighting corruption.

He insisted that the anti-graft agencies had made huge gains in the fight against corruption, which many Nigerians were unaware of.

The President cited the conviction of about 250 people for various acts of malfeasance under his administration.

Jonathan said: “ICPC and EFCC must make Nigerians believe that they are working. I know what you are doing, but not everybody knows what you are doing. Ordinarily, these are agencies whose activities are not supposed to be made too loud because you don’t celebrate a situation where you send 100 or 200 Nigerians to prison.

“But the society is so funny. These days, anybody who wants to claim any element of credibility will go to the television and attack the government for corruption. ‘The President’s body language shows that he is not fighting corruption or he is not ready to fight corruption.’ Sometimes, it’s even the corrupt people who are making these statements… If you want to be an angel, just attack the government; whatever you have done is covered.

“Recently, the EFCC published the list of about 250 people it convicted. That is a huge number. Yet, some people say the government is not fighting corruption. How many countries have convicted half that number of people within a space of time?

Dr Jonathan urged Iheoma to give Nigerians the accurate population figures to enable the three tiers of government to plan properly.

He said: “…Only yesterday (Tuesday), when we had our Economic Management Team meeting, the coordinating minister for the Economy and the Finance minister said people talk about the growth of the economy at six to seven per cent but it is not impacting on the people.

“People say if the economy is growing, it should impact on the people, such as employment, feeding and other things. She said well, if the economy is growing at a particular rate and our population is growing much more than the growth of the economy, then we have challenges. When we relate the two, the economic rate and population rate then you run at a negative, and probably these are the issues.”

“So, when we have a country that the population is growing than the way our economy is growing, then we must know our population figures, so that government at federal, state and local levels will be able to plan,” he said.

On why he removed the former Chairman of NPC, Festus Odimegwu, Jonathan said: “So population commission is critical and you also have to be mindful about the statements you make and that is not limited to the National Population Commission but to all of us holding offices. You must be mindful and not make statements that will create problem for the society. I dropped your predecessor because of certain statements he made and brought credibility problem to the commission.”

“Perception in most cases are stronger than reality; no matter what you do, if the perception is wrong then society will not follow you. So I believe that you will bring strong leadership to the National Population Commission as the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, I believe you are at the highest level of practice, you are at the top and you will do a good job there,” the President added.

“And for the special adviser on National Assembly, you are coming at an interesting time when people are crossing to the left and right. Luckily, you have been a part of the National Assembly; you have been a senator, you know the games you play there; you know the trick. You will be able to relate with every member. The Federal Government is for everybody and that is why we cannot talk the way they talk. Because as long as you won election to be the president of a country you are the president of everybody, even those who abuse you, even those that are ready to kill you, so you have to protect them.

“To the SA on the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the key area you are going to handle are relatively new in our political history. It was formed by some African heads of state; of course, President Obasanjo was one of the pioneers who came up with the concept of NEPAD and APRM. I believe as African states, we have not been able to reach the level of their vision or dream of what made them form NEPAD and APRM. So, you have a lot of work to do, to work with your colleagues in other countries to see that Nigeria gets to where these great men and women envisioned for us to be.

Congratulating them, he said their appointment is coming at a critical time when many things are happening at the same time.

Speaking for the others, Iheoma promised that they would leave up to the expectations of Nigerians.

“We are eternally grateful to you for giving us the opportunity to serve this country,” he added.

  • Tinubu accuses Jonathan govt of turning NNPC into ATM

Tinubu accuses Jonathan govt of turning NNPC into ATM

ormer Lagos State governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has described the Jonathan government as one that routinely abuses power and manipulates the people.

Speaking as after-dinner speaker and special guest of honour at the NG Annual Dinner in Lagos at the Muson Centre on Thursday February 6, 2014, Tinubu drew a distinction between the PDP and the APC.

He blamed the Jonathan-led PDP government as one spinning recklessly out of control in terms of spending, corruption in the oil sector and other slush funds channelled through government programmes to fill the pockets of party loyalists.

Tinubu noted that Nigerians are yet to get a satisfactory explanation on the 400,000 barrels per day that is stolen. He opined that the NNPC has been converted into an automated teller machine (ATM).

Tinubu said: “Like I have maintained previously, the Sure-P project is a drain pipe; a slush fund for political patronage. For instance, the N253.5 billion alleged to have being spent on projects by the Federal Government as at December 2013 is not reflective in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. In 2012, about N180 billion accrued to the Federal Government in Sure-P alone.”

“Under the heavy weight of corruption, heavy dose of insecurity, the ticking time bomb of youth unemployment and a near total absence of institutional rationalisation, Nigeria under President Jonathan clutches on like a battered engine in need of a complete overhaul. In fact, a change of engine.”

Tinubu, who spoke in a very conversational tone at the dinner, used his experience as a former governor of Lagos State as a tool to examine what is wrong with Nigeria politically and economically.

According to him, Nigeria punches below its weight and is trapped in a disarticulated economy occasioning poverty and frustration on people. “The AFDB, in its African Economic Outlook report of 2013 revealed that poverty has worsened since 1996 and through 11 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rule. The efforts of President Jonathan’s government at combating poverty were also faulted.”

The former governor of Lagos State asserted that under the current economic environment, it is almost impossible for Nigeria to meet any of the predictions about its prosperity.

“The projection that Nigeria will soon emerge, at least in the next 30 years alongside three other countries as an economic giant by the British Economist, Jim O’Neil, will for long be a mirage. O’Neil predicted that Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey are to become what he refers to as “MINT’.

“We all know that this is another Vision 2020 gimmick. A very distant hope with no chance of coming to fruition. Let us not for once delude ourselves that this is possible. A country that is yet to export the smallest plastic product or one that generates a miserable 12 per cent of the total energy needs of the country can never be a candidate for “MINT”, “BRICS” (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and as we now know, Vision 2020. Our energy woes abide.”

Tinubu was on call to explain the vision and mission of the new party, APC and offer an insight into the ideology of the party.

He said: “We formed this party to improve the lot and the lives of those who don’t have. We formed it to bring dignity, hope, justice and the reality of prosperity to those Nigerians who seek these things.

“The PDP has never been a friend of the people and each year, it becomes less of one. They have turned their backs on the people. Now it is time the people turn their backs against the PDP.

“The PDP claims we don’t have an ideology. We have an ideology but it is one PDP can’t understand. What the arrogant and mean don’t understand, they pretend does not exist.

“One can no longer dance on both sides of the fence. Either you are resolute for justice or for injustice. Stake your claim and sign your name to it so history may record your decision and your deeds at this critical hour.

“For me, I have but one life thus I have but one choice. I choose the right way. I follow the APC. I urge you all to hitch a ride on the rescue mission APC is about and rally for change and the re-building of a Nigeria that meets our dream.”

He added: “We have come to a moment in time when there is no time to waffle, obfuscate or prattle. Beginning from now and as we march toward the elections of 2015, the people shall decide whether they want to enshrine injustice, inequality and the rule of arbitrary might over their lives or do they want to build a finer existence where the light of fairness, prosperity and the rule of law shines on all. “

The NG dinner, held once a year, is an association of core professionals drawn from diverse fields and mostly Lagos based. The NG group formed in 1998 has produced a number of governors, ministers, commissioners and other key government functionaries. It is an informal think tank, a sounding board of sorts for government types and policy makers.

Mr. Wale Edun, the chairman of the NG group, welcomed all members and expressed delight that Governor Tinubu found time to honor their invitation.

  • 2015: North splits over support for Jonathan

2015: North splits over support for Jonathan

THE North seems to be divided over the 2015 presidential election, with a new group emerging yesterday to push President Goodluck Jonathan’s yet unannounced ambition.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is seen as the voice of the North.

A splinter group, the Northern Elders Council (NEC), was unfolded in Kaduna. It is led by elder statesman Tanko Yakassai.

Other key members of the NEC are Ambassador Ledan Shuni, Vice Chairman of the ACF’s Board of Trustees and a former Nigeria Ambassador to Spain, Alhaji Yusuf Mamman.

The new group declared its unalloyed support for the 2015 re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

This is contrary to the position of the ACF and the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) that the presidency should return to the North in 2015.

But the ACF seems unfazed by it all.

To the ACF, it is not unusual to see such activities as elections approach.

ACF spokesman Anthony Sani said in an SMS: “Surely, the proliferation of groups by northern elders who profess to speak for the North is not the preferred option. But ACF is not very worried, precisely because actually the North has never been a united whole unit when it comes to partisan politics.

“Most of these groups springing up are partisan in intent and purposes. This is because it is unrealistic to expect all northerners to speak with one voice at partisan level. That is not possible and is not desirable either. Even the law does not allow it when it provides that the President has to be voted for by the entire country and not by only a section.

“So, when we talk of speaking with one voice, it is about the majority, since there is always minority right in any democracy. And that was why Alhaji Shehu Shagari contested with Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim and Mallam Aminu Kano in the North and with Zik and Awo in the South during the Second Republic. So what I believe is happening is clearly democracy in action.”

Kaduna State Governor Mukthar Yero is concerned that there is growing tension in the country ahead of the 2015 elections. He has urged elders to engage stakeholders, and educate the youth on the sanctity of the ballot box.

Yakassai said the new group was ready to partner with others and individuals from all parts of the country who believe in dialogue, mutual respect, harmony and peaceful coexistence.

Yakassai said the NEC would “protect the socio-economic and political interest of the North, the corporate existence and stability of the Nigerian nation”.

“We are firm and committed beleivers in the Nigerian project,” he said, adding:

“We recognise the significance of Nigeria’s centenary as a political entity and call on all Nigerians to serve as agents of consolidation of national unity and continued existence of our nation as one indivisible country. Northern Nigeria has made immense contributions to the unity, well being and development of Nigeria as well as the historical relationship of its people between the North and the South long before amalgamation.

“The Northern Elders Council acknowledges the current state of violence and insurgency in the North, armed robbery and kidnapping in other parts of the country. We urge all men and women of goodwill to act in concert to eradicate and stabilise the polity.

“We in Northern Elders Council appreciate the tremendous progress made in Nigeria’s march towards establishing a stable democratic order. We will work alongside Nigerians who wish to ensure that machinations of anti-democratic forces in this country are frustrated… It is unacceptable for elders to make inflammatory statements capable of breaching the peace…”

The NEC pledged its support for the National Conference.

Addressing the Elders, Yero said: “As elders, it is time for you to put heads together in proffering workable solutions to the myriad of socio-political as well as economic challenges plaguing development in our country.

“Our elders must urgently seek ways of reviving the strong bond of unity and brotherhood that used to be the major basis of stability of the region within a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. The present situation where our people have been divided along ethnic and religious lines is unacceptable and inimical to sustainable growth and development.

“We must work together towards finding ways to stem the growing tension in the region as well as in the country. In achieving this, we cannot underestimate the power of dialogue and all aggrieved persons must be allowed to ventilate their opinions on the way forward.

“It is also a common knowledge that the heightened tension is directly linked to next year’s general elections”.

In their 11-point communiqué read by Yusuf Mamman, the NEC welcome the publication of the election time table by the Independent National Electoral Commission and urged all political parties and actors to avoid heating up the polity.

They called on governors to promptly develop a master plan for the modernisation of agriculture, address the problem of massive unemployment, poverty and lack of economic empowerment and also initiate programmes that will address social issues as unemployment and widespread poverty and other social challenges.

  • Jonathan: I won’t hand over Boko Haram to another President

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday promised not to hand over the campaign to curb the insurgency of the Boko Haram sect to another President.

Jonathan spoke at the inauguration of the Wuye Ultra-Morden Market in Abuja.

The President said his administration’s onslaught against insurgency would be sustained until the battle is won.

Jonathan said he would be selfish in the prosecution of the campaign against Boko Haram insurgents since he would not want to hand over the problem to another president.

He said: “The master of ceremonies (MC) …said I am the luckiest President and he mentioned two key things: the golden jubilee of our Independence, the celebration of which I supervised and, of course, the centenary anniversary. But the most important one he forgot to mention is that I’m also the luckiest one managing Boko Haram.

“That is why I want to be very selfish here in not wanting to hand over Boko Haram to another president.”

Jonathan noted that trade is the lifeline of every country and the market is the basis of every economy.

The President said for an economy to grow, it must trade meaningfully with the wider world.

He said: “We have various markets in the country that have contributed robustly to the economic growth of our country. These include the Kano, Onitsha, Ibadan, Ariaria markets. Some of these markets are not only used by Nigerians or people living in Nigeria but also by some other people who come to trade here from neighbouring countries…”
