Jonathan, ministers jittery as May 29 approaches

THE President, ministers and aides seem to be jitery as the May 29 handover approaches.

Dr Goodluck Jonathan told ministers yesterday to brace for “persecution”. He gave no details.

It was all at a thanksgiving and farewell service in his honour at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

He was relective – he recalled how good the system has been to him – and grateful – for his achievements, which he said ordinary people appreciated.

But Jonathan seemed to betray the nervousness that has gripped his cabinet since it became inevitable that a new administration will mount the saddle on May 29.

He said his ministers would be persecuted, adding: “For ministers and aides who served with me, I sympathise with them; they will be persecuted. And they must be ready for that persecution.”

Jonathan went on: “To my ministers, I wish you what I wish myself. They will have hard times; we will all have hard times. Our ways will be rough.

“But we are happy the ordinary people appreciate what we did and that is most important. It’s not what the elite or the privileged few talk or say about you but what the majority of the Nigerian public think about your actions and inactions that matter.

“We came to Abuja peacefully and we are returning peacefully. I thank the church and Nigerians because they stood by us at our most difficult times.

“Even for election, we had people who supported us all over the country and for the success of the incoming administration.”

Recalling how good the system has been to him as an individual, President Jonathan said he was ready to pay the supreme price for Nigeria.

Dr Jonathan said having received scholarship to study and having been a major player on the nation’s political landscape in the last 16 years, including his six years as President, paying the supreme price would not be out of place.

The service, conducted by the Primate of Church of Nigeria, ArchBishop Nicholas Okoh, was attended by Jonathan’s wife Patience, who was appearing for the first time in any public event in the country since her husband lost the March 28 election.

The President said: “When I look at the whole picture of my life up to when I became the president of this country. And I say that if soldiers and police officers that have not received 0. 5 per cent of the benefits that I have received from the state can lay their lives for this country, I should do anything in the interest of Nigeria, including paying the supreme price.

“As long as I live, I will continue to do my best for the state because the state has helped me as a person. I have to thank Nigerians, especially my state, for giving me the opportunity to serve as deputy governor and the country gave me the opportunity to serve as vice president and then president, first was to complete the tenure of the late president and later serve as president from which I am exiting now as a very happy and fulfilled man.”

Jonathan added: “I believe there are reasons for everything. Some hard decisions have their own cost, no doubt about that. That I have run the government this way that stabilised certain things; the electoral process and other things that brought stability into this country. They were very costly decisions which I myself must be ready to pay for.

“Some people come to me and say this or that person, is he not your friend that benefited? Is it not your government that this person benefited from? But this is what the person is saying. But I always say worse statements will come. If you take certain decisions, you should know that those close to you will even abandon you at some point. And I tell them that more of my so-called friends will disappear.”

He recalled that when Frederick W. De Klerk took the decision to abolish minority rule in the Republic of South Africa, his wife divorced him.

He said: “I hope my wife will not divorce me. But that is the only decision that has made Republic of South Africa to still remain a global player by this time. If we still had that minority rule there, by this time, nobody will be talking about Republic of South Africa.

“If you take certain decisions, it might be good for the generality of the people but it might affect people differently.”

The President also pointed out that his ministers would be persecuted as he hoped that they are prepared to face the situation.

According to Jonathan, people will benefit more when the country is in good shape and things are going on well.

He said: “You don’t need to know Mr. President or Mr. Governor. The issue is not about Jonathan or Buhari or any other person. The issue is how the government functions, stability and buoyant economy that will enable Nigerians to move forward and live happy. That is our interest; that is my prayer point.”

He also urged religious groups to continue to pray for the peace and development of the nation.

The President took the Old Testament lesson from Isaiah 40: 25-31. His wife read the New Testament lesson from 1st Timothy 6:11-19.

There was thanksgiving by the first family, which got a farewell gift.

Prayers were said for the first family and the nation.

In his sermon, the Most Revd. Okoh spoke on the need for all Christians to give thanks at all times, in all circumstances.

He took the congregation through 1st Thessalonian 5:16-18, Daniel 4:17 and the book of Hebrew.

Noting that President Jonathan gave thanks to God when he assumed office, he said the Sunday service was to thank God with him as he is rounding off his tenure.

He said: “By God’s divine grace, he was chosen to be President after being deputy governor, governor and vice president. Whichever way you look at it, our God has been good to him.”

“Furthermore, we thank God for the contributions you have made to our development in your tenure. Generations unborn will read about Jonathan.”

“Nigeria will need you. Africa will need you. The international community will need you. You are not expired. The whole of Nigeria is now your political party,” he added.

Former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, who has served in all governments since the Gen. Babangida administration, also thanked God for what He has done through President Jonathan for Nigeria.

He said: “You have deepened democracy, the trains are moving again and you have brought hope again to Nigerians.”

“Mr. President, you don’t know what you did for many Nigerians, for conceding that defeat at that point in time is worth celebrating. You are now a hero for Africa.” He said

Minister of Power Prof. Chinedu Nebo also highlighted the good qualities Jonathan brought to bear during his tenure.

Also at the service were Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Chief of Staff to the President Jones Arogbofa, Senator Emmanuel Paulker and Senator Hope Uzodinma. There were also ministers and other top government functionaries.

The APC position on probe of Jonathan’s govt

The APC last month decried the allegations of last minute looting of resources, hurried recruitment into the public service and rushed privatisation of key financial institutions.

The party warned that such actions would have serious repercussions.

It said though “it is true that the incoming Gen. Muhammadu Buhari Administration will not get itself bogged down by an endless probe of the activities of the Jonathan Administration, all actions taken since the result of the May 28 presidential election was announced may come under the searchlight.

Gen. Buhari himself said he would revisit the “missing N20b” investigation, a statement that elicited panic in government following which the audit report of the PriceWaterCooper (PwC) was released.

I was ready to die for Nigeria, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said he was ready to pay the supreme price for Nigeria with all the benefits he has derived from the country right from his school days.

Apart from getting scholarships in school, he said he became a deputy governor, governor, vice president and president by the grace of God.

Jonathan, who noted that he was not more hardworking than other Nigerians, said that security personnel who have not gotten 0.5 percent of the benefits he derived from office, have been paying the supreme price for the country.

He spoke during the Thanksgiving and Farewell service in his honour at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life-camp, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

He said: “When I look at the whole picture of my life up to when I became the president of this country. And I say that if soldiers and police officers that have not received 0. 5 percent of the benefits that I have received from the state can lay their lives for this country, I should do anything in the interest of Nigeria including paying the supreme price.”

“As long as live, I will continue to do my best for the state because the state has helped me as a person. I have to thank Nigerians especially my state for giving me the opportunity to serve as deputy governor and the whole country gave me the opportunity to serve as Vice President and then president, first was to complete the tenure of the late president and later serve as president from which I am exiting now as a very happy and fulfilled man.” he said

Stressing that there are reasons for eveything, he said that some decisions taken by him and the government have their costs.

He said: “I believe there are reasons for everything. Some hard decisions have their own cost, no doubt about that. That I have ran the government this way that stabilized certain things, the electoral process and other things that brought stability into this country. They were very costly decisions which I myself must be ready to pay for.”

“Some people come to me and say this or that person is he not your friend that benefited. Is it not your government that this person benefited from? But this is what the person is saying. But I used to say worse statements will come. If you take certain decisions, you should know that those close to you will even abandon you at some point. And I tell them that more of my so-called friends will disappear.”

  • Genesis of Amaechi’s quarrel with Jonathan

Genesis of Amaechi’s quarrel with Jonathan

Hon. Oji Ngofa is the Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He served two terms as the Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, between 2007 and 2014. In the April 11 governorship election in the state, which he described as “a fight of blood and fire”, he delivered his LGA to the APC. In this interview with PRECIOUS DIKEWOHA, he offers an insight into what transpired during the election and why Governor Rotimi Amaechi fell out with President Jonathan and his wife, Patience, among other issues.

How would you assess the last general election in Rivers State?

To be very candid with you, there was no election in the proper sense of the word. We have seen the trend of elections in Nigeria, especially in Rivers State, but I can say with all honesty that the elections of March 28 and April 11 were severely compromised.

This time, it was not just the usual situation that we see and call irregularities; we had elections during which the institutions charged with the responsibility of conducting elections, I mean the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security forces were involved in obvious cases of collaboration with a political party, the PDP, to rig the elections in Rivers State. The Resident Electoral Commissioner was specifically posted to Rivers State to perfect the rigging modalities that PDP embarked upon. And that is the reason why the result has turned out the way it is, strongly criticised by both local and international observers. And so there was no election. What happened in Rivers State was a total sham.

Is it not an irony that your party, which is governing the state, is the one crying over alleged rigging during the elections?

That is what I am saying; that the institutions charged with the responsibility to make the votes count are all federal institutions. INEC is a federal institution. The security forces are also controlled by the Federal Government. So they apparently acted in a way to show bias in favour of those calling the shots at the federal level.

And, of course, if you have been following the political trend in Rivers State since 2013, it makes sense to say that the government of Goodluck Jonathan, through the instrumentality of his wife, Patient Jonathan, arranged the whole sham of elections in Rivers State since 2013. This they did by taking over the security forces of the state from the governor through the posting of Joseph Mbu as Police Commissioner. It is the consistent pattern of the Federal Government, which employed its weight in the politics of Rivers State just to deal with Governor Chibuike Amaechi who disagreed with Jonathan at some point.

That disagreement went on, manifesting in the process of election. And I think the President and his wife, in a bid to prove that they are in control at the federal level, instigated the sham that happened in the elections of Rivers State. And they can specifically be held responsible for the desecration of the election process that happened in the state.

What have you to say about the politically motivated killings during and after the elections in Rivers State?

The politically motivated killings in Rivers State were part of the entire script. It was a deliberate arrangement. When you look at the killings that took place, you will know that the whole idea is to intimidate voters and violate the electoral process, to attack APC members who opposed the President retuning for a second term. It was an attack on APC members who supported Governor Amaechi as one who has the mandate of Rivers State and the issues Rivers people stand for.

So they knew that majority of Rivers people are with Amaechi, and they believe that the only way they could forcefully have their way is to violently attack people. And the pattern has been consistent; they think that when they intimidate and kill people, it will stop them from supporting Amaechi’s cause in Rivers State. And that was what created the kind of violence we have suffered in the state.

Don’t forget that when this crisis started in 2013, when they procured judgment against the PDP led by G. U Ake (former PDP chairman in River State). They posted Mbu to Rivers State as the Commissioner of Police. The whole idea was to muffle any opposition to the President in the state. And at that point, for the first time in the state, militants were out on the streets of Rivers State protesting against the governor of the state and protected by the police.

Don’t forget that those that have been identified as known criminals and had been curtailed by the security in Rivers State were, for the first time, let loose on the streets of Port Harcourt and they started feeling that they had the power to go back to their old ways. Of course, most of them were deployed by the PDP to carry out their electoral enchantment. Unfortunately that has led to the killing of several people and the electoral sham that took place in Rivers State.

You were part of the movement that brought change at the national level. What made it possible?

Of course, most Nigerians were disenchanted with the PDP. After 16 years of governance and the disaster of President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerians were yearning for change. And those who believed in change and those who think Nigeria was not properly governed galvanised their forces together. APC just took the opportunity that Nigerians were yearning for change.

The PDP was in its comfort zone, thinking that having governed this country for too long, they had tormented the people to stupor and the people would have no choice but to accept whatever they would bring. Of course, for the first time, the people said no. Don’t forget that the PDP itself has actually imploded with bad governance and lack of internal democracy. This is a party that allowed five governors to leave the party in one day.

They couldn’t even govern themselves; they couldn’t govern the PDP family and the entire process imploded. They were changing their national chairman as if they were changing gear in the car. So Nigerians were tired of this, but they thought they could take Nigerians for granted. Sixteen years of PDP have not brought significant change in this country and we think that we have the expertise in this country. We have the resources and if properly applied, Nigeria will be much better than it is today.

And of course, the impunity of Jonathan’s administration; they thought they could go away with that. The interference of the wife of the President in the governance of this country was intended to bluff people off. So when the APC came together through the merger of different political parties, people saw that this could possibly be a way out.

I tell you, if Nigerians did not do what they did in the last general elections, Nigerians would not have hope anymore. The ouster of Jonathan during the election represents the desire of Nigerians to improve and to get better. I can tell you that this improvement has just started. My party will learn from PDP’s mistakes because if we fail, we will also be voted out.

The significance of what has happened on 28 March is that political power has shifted to where it should be. No matter how big the party or the country, power belongs to the people. The people have demonstrated that on the platform of APC. Any political party that takes Nigerian people for granted will be treated the way PDP was treated at the national level. I think that is good and positive for the democratic growth of this country.

A lot of people have accused Governor Chibuike Amaechi of plotting against the Niger Delta people by joining forces with the North and the South West to abort Jonathan’s quest for a second term…

You know that when people fail, they tend to look for other people to blame rather than blaming themselves. Now, in what ways did Amaechi connive with the North to undercharge the Niger Delta people? First, we have a Niger Delta President who allowed his wife to interfere in the governance of a state. As President, he did not see the need to call his wife to order. And the President didn’t realise that governor Amaechi got his mandate through the electoral process. The President’s wife has no mandate; she has no constitutional role to play in the country.

Before our very eyes in this state, the wife of the President snatched the microphone from a sitting governor. The President from Niger Delta did not care to come home to resolve whatever the issue was. Rather, he took sides with his wife and decided to punish Rivers people.

The President from Niger Delta was against Governor Amaechi when he contested as the chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum. The President from Niger Delta did not see the need to protect the Niger Delta governor who was contesting to lead the governors’ forum. We all are aware that Governor Amaechi scored 19 votes and a Niger Delta President who sponsored Jonah Jang (Plateau State governor) didn’t see the need to protect his Niger Delta governor. He took sides with the Northern governor to be the chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum. Nobody saw anything bad in that.

In the process, the governor from Niger Delta won the election by 19 to 16. But President Jonathan interpreted 16 to mean 19 and therefore supported the Northern governor who got 16 votes. The President also allowed the festering crisis in Rivers State, which led to the defection of Amaechi and his supporters. They attended several meetings to see how that could be resolved but the President of the country could not resolve that. So Amaechi was forced out of PDP, and he is a governor, a politician.

In Nigeria, you must play politics on the basis of a political party. Since they didn’t want him, they procured a judgment in Abuja and foisted Obuah who never contested as the chairman of the PDP in Rivers State in 2012. I was privileged to be at that congress as a local government chairman then. Felix Obuah was not anywhere near the venue of the congress in March 2012. But one year later, they forced him in as party chairman. So what do you expect the governor to do? Who would have been subjected to what governor Amaechi was subjected to and would not find an alternative to protect his mandate as governor of the state?

The same President from Niger Delta didn’t know that Rivers State was part of the Niger Delta and ceded oil wells meant for Rivers State to other states. Oil wells meant for Etche were given to Abia. The oil wells at Souku in Kalabari were ceded to Bayelsa, and the oil wells meant for Andoni were ceded to Akwa-Ibom State. And Governor Amaechi has the mandate of Rivers people to protect their common wealth; he has the mandate of Rivers people to protect their property. But the President didn’t see any need to protect what belongs to the Niger Delta, particularly Rivers State.

The same President grounded the plane of his Niger Delta governor, which was meant to make his transportation easier. The NLNG, which was to be built in Bonny, the President stopped it against the interest of Rivers people. What did the President do for Rivers people? The answer is nothing. We have never had it this bad in our history.

Let me take you back a bit: every federal investment you see in Rivers State was built by Northerners: from the petrochemicals, the two refineries, old fertiliser company, Federal Ocean Terminal; they were all built by the Federal Government under the administrations of people from other regions, not from the Niger Delta.

Of course, you are aware that the President himself admitted when he came to campaign in Rivers State, that he had not done anything for Niger Delta people, particularly in Rivers State. And we are saying you cannot continue with this level of impunity. Look at the level of insecurity in Rivers State. I am telling you that a Wike-led government cannot manage the security of the state because it is the same people he has used to secure sham electoral victory. So this state will be in big trouble under Wike.

Some people said that the governorship candidate of your party could have played the sportsman’s part by congratulating Wike, who was declared winner in the last governorship election in Rivers State…

There is no basis to congratulate him, because election did not hold in Rivers State, Wike did not win an election in Rivers State. What they did in Rivers State was that a top INEC official gave them the result sheets, they wrote and returned it. But in Eleme Local Government Area where we took charge, they did not succeed and we got that through fire and blood. That was why APC won in Eleme LGA. People deliberately go to war in the name of election. The luck we had is that the soldiers that came were not biased. They didn’t chase us away like they did in other LGAs. That was what made it different in Eleme.

Your party rejected the outcome of the election in Rivers State. What is your expectation at the ongoing tribunal? And if the tribunal nullifies the election, do you think APC can contend with PDP in another election?

The method will change because we don’t see how the sham that happened in Rivers State will stand. The mandate of the people that has been violated and stolen must be restored. The people of Rivers State cannot be in the government that is not their own. This incoming government will suffer illegitimacy until it is restored by the tribunal’s decision. We wouldn’t have issues in the next election if the tribunal nullifies the election because the dynamics would have changed. The next government would have come and it is a government that would not deploy police on partisan basis, and that was what we saw in Jonathan.

Everything about Jonathan was how he would return as President for a second term. And what has happened has proved the futility of human thinking. The crisis we saw in this state was that Jonathan thinks that Amaechi’s position was in contrast with his political career and Wike being an opportunist just saw an opening and took it.

If Wike and those running around were interested in solving the problem between Amaechi and the President, it would have been resolved. But they were interested in taking the opportunity provided. They came in and divided them the more. But who is laughing last? Amaechi and APC will laugh last in this state.

How sure are you that the incoming government of APC will deliver?

The crisis that led us to leave PDP has shown that it was a separation between those who desire the good of this country and those who chose to perpetuate themselves in old ways without any sound principle or morals underpinning their politics. Even in Rivers State, the separation is between those in the evil kind of politics and those who desire the good of this country. Of course, the progressives are in APC and those who want to continue with evil ways are in PDP. I can tell you that we have very smart, intelligent people who love this country as APC members. With the resources available, I can assure you that you will see a government deliberately working for the growth and development of Nigeria and working for the happiness of Nigerians.

May 29 controversy: Amaechi raps Jonathan

•Rivers gov: they’re busy sacking people and making appointments that should be left to incoming govt
•Amaechi, APC leaders should be ignored, says Rivers PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday dismissed as  diversionary and unnecessary, claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Presidency and the PDP were not cooperating in the transition process.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, said that the meetings of the transition and inauguration committees of both parties have been going on fruitfully and wondered where the  false alarm was coming from.

But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who is a member of his party’s transtition committee,  insisted that no formal meeting between the panels  has taken place.

Governor  Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State  joined the fray yesterday as he   took a swipe  at  President Goodluck Jonathan  for  allegedly spending valuable part  of his last days in office sacking people and making appointments that ought to  be left to the incoming administration to handle.

Chief Metuh, in a statement in Abuja branded the APC’s allegation as an unfortunate display of arrogance and falsehood ostensibly aimed at heating up the system and creating room to cover for its inadequacies, thereby inventing excuses for any failure in office.

He said: “We can confirm that the APC Transition Committee led by Mallam Ahmed Joda has met at least twice with the Presidency team led by Vice President Namadi Sambo, while the Timipre Sylva-led APC Inauguration Committee has been meeting almost on a daily basis with the PDP team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. It is, therefore, most uncharitable for the APC to attempt to mislead the people by claiming that the PDP-led Presidency was not cooperating in the process.

“Although the ruling party suffered some electoral set back, Nigerians are witness to the fact that the PDP has remained humble in defeat, while focusing on rebuilding and reinventing itself. Such should not in any way warrant the unnecessary attacks, vituperations and insults from the APC.

“As we look up from the lowest level we have ever fallen, we are fully determined to start the process of ascending back to an acceptable level in earnest. The APC must, therefore, learn to be decent and cease to be arrogant as that would amount to taking the goodwill of the people for granted.

“What should be of more concern to an incoming government like APC is the negative signals and the rising worries by Nigerians over its flip-flops and apparent nervousness of its President-elect who has started reneging on his campaign promises.”

But Alhaji Mohammed stood by his position that “as of today (yesterday), there has been no meeting between members of Jonathan’s  Transition Committee and  the President-elect’s,” even while admitting   that the Chairman of the President-elect’s committee, Alhaji Ahmed Joda “in the company of two or three members of our committee has met with the Vice President and the Secretary  to the Government of the Federation.”

He added: “However, there are 19 members  of the President-elect’s committee of which I am privileged  to be one and as of today, we have had no formal meeting with Jonathan’s team.

“We don’t even  know who the members are. Or is Jonathan’ Transition Committee made up of only the Vice President  and SGF?

“If the VP and SGF have met with four members of a 19-man team, does that constitute a meeting with the President-elect’s Transition-committee.

“As a matter of fact, we have formally requested in writing  for a meeting with the Jonathan’s Transition Committee  and have received no reply.”

He said Metuh failed to controvert the APC claim that the Federal Government had refused to  “give us  one page  of handing over notes.

“They told our Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Joda, in one of their informal meetings  that we should not expect any handling over documents before the 14th of May 2015.”

He challenged Metuh and the Presidency to deny this, saying: “Is this Metuh and the Presidency’s  understanding of a smooth transition?”

In Port Harcourt, Governor  Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State  took a swipe  at  President Goodluck Jonathan  for  spending valuable part  of his last days in office sacking people and making appointments that should be left to the incoming administration to handle.

The governor described the development as provocative.

But he said the  All Progressives  Congress  (APC)  “has refused to dance to PDP’s drumbeats, choosing to show maturity.”

Governor Amaechi was reacting to the allegation by the President’s party, PDP, that  he had refused to co-operate with Mr. Nyesom Wike, winner of the last governorship election in the state, ahead of the May 29 handing over.

Information Commissioner   Ibim  Semenitari who spoke for the governor said that the PDP and not the APC was guilty of trying to frustrate its successor in power.

Amaechi said he and his commissioners are ready with  their hand-over notes, preparatory to the terminal date of his administration on May 29.

He  wondered what he would be doing in office after  the expiration of his tenure.

His words: “We are ready for handover, unlike the PDP at the centre that is busy making new appointments and sacking people.

“They have refused to brief the Muhammadu Buhari Transition Team, and the APC is not screaming blue murder. Rather, the APC at the centre is meeting, planning and preparing for government.”

He denied  that he has not been co-operating with Wike, saying: “They stole the outcomes of the April 11 elections and gave no hoot. They declared their candidates winners with the criminal connivance of the INEC and cared less about local, national and international opinions that what took place in Rivers State on April 11 was everything, but an election.

“The more the APC leaders had pushed for electoral materials, which are statutory demands of an electoral litigation, the farther PDP and INEC had kept them, and seemingly, they have had their way.

“So, they have all going for them. They have nothing to worry about. If and when Mr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike will be sworn in, the issue of handover notes and other statutory briefings should not be any worry to him. After all, PDP in Rivers State has constituted Inauguration and Transition Committees.

“Already, Wike has, as part of his transition team, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Renner Ikuru, who is the Vice-Chairman of the Rivers  State Executive Council and who is abreast of all projects and programmes of the current administration, having chaired many sensitive state government committees and state cabinet meetings.”

Semenitari admonished  PDP leaders  in the state to learn from  APC  members  who, according to him, have refused to be provoked by the PDP.

She  said: “Governor Amaechi has not made any new appointment, as he knows he is leaving office on May 29, unlike what PDP is doing at the centre. They are busy sacking and making appointments, functions that should be entirely left for the incoming administration.

“Provocative as it is, APC has rather concerned itself with continued preparations to give Nigerians good governance. APC has refused to dance to PDP’s evil drumbeats, choosing to show maturity.

“Let PDP in Rivers State leave Governor Amaechi alone. He is a busy man and did not contest any election. Governor Amaechi is known for committing his all into any worthy assignment or duty he is called to do.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Rivers, Dame Gesila Khan  denied that the commission helped PDP rig the election as claimed by Amaechi while the   Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state , Samuel Nwanosike, said  Amaechi should be ignored.

Khan and Nwanosike maintained that elections took place in Rivers state on March 28 and April 11, insisting that the polls were free, fair, transparent and credible, with the PDP winning overwhelmingly, in view of the popularity and wide acceptability of the party’s candidates.

The Rivers REC of INEC stated that all the requested electoral materials were being made available to the leaders and lawyers of all the political

The party’s 330 seats – four more than needed for a Commons majority – was their first of such victory since 1992.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cameron has promised to lead a government for “one nation” and make “Great Britain greater” as he returned to Downing Street as prime minister.

Speaking after visiting Buckingham Palace, the PM said the United Kingdom was “on the brink of something special.”

Retirees to Jonathan: pay our arrears before May 29

Hundreds of pensioners poured into the secretariat of the Ogun State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, yesterday protesting alleged 10 months pension arrears owed them by the Federal Government.

The retirees, who protested on the platform of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on PENCOM to settle their arrears before he leaves government on May 29.

They lamented that the non-payment of the arrears was affecting their survival, adding that over 20 of their members died from hunger and health challenges.

The union’s National Chairman, Samuel Kajusola, who spoke on behalf of the members, said they have noticed some aspects of the Pension Reform Act 2014, which the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) failed to implement.

Kajusola, who expressed suspicion that their arrears might have been used to fund 2015 polls’ campaign, said such areas include computation and compilation of retirement benefits, review of pension and non-payment of retirement benefits.

According to him, pensioners across the country, who retired under the contributory pension scheme since August 2014 till date, were yet to have their “lump sum or monthly payment settled by PENCOM”.

He said: “What do they want the retirees to be eating after serving Federal Government of Nigeria for 35 years meritoriously? We suspect that our money with PENCOM has been used for 2015 election campaign.

“Retirees have been complaining seriously on meagre amount paid as monthly pension, either as monthly withdrawal or annuity. Contributory pensioners received only 20-25 per cent of their last pay as monthly pension, while a pensioner in the old pension scheme receives 80 per cent of his last pay as monthly pension.

“Pension Reform Act 2004 section (4) stipulated that retirees will have not less than 50 per cent of their last pay as monthly pension as at the date of their retirement.

“None of the retirees enjoy this amount since the inception of the Act till date. Unfortunately, the portion has been expunged from the new Pension Reform Act 2014. What have we done to deserve this ugly treatment?”

Jonathan inspects rail, other projects in Abuja

Activities in Abuja came to a halt yesterday, as President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned and inspected some projects.

The exercise caused gridlock on major roads in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Residents and commuters had to wait in heavy traffic for almost an hour because of the road blockage by security operators as the president inspected and commissioned Lugbe roads and tested the train at the Abuja light rail terminus.

Other multi-billion naira projects inspected include the Abuja Light Rail project, the Abuja Airport Road and Kubwa Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Jonathan said the projects have improved Abuja tremendously, expressing confidence that the incoming administration of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari would continue  with government’s efforts at reviving and expanding the nation’s railway network.

Jonathan said he would brief the President-elect on the issue before May 29 handover date.

He harped on the need for a robust railway network to ease and reduce the cost of transportation in Nigeria.

The President thanked the FCT authorities and the Chinese  Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) for bringing the project to fruition. He also congratulated Abuja residents who will enjoy the facility.

He said: “I emphasise the need to develop an effective mass transit system in the country. We cannot talk about mass transit using taxis, small cars  and small buses even the luxury buses.”

“It will be too  expensive, until our rail system works; that is why we are emphasising on inter-city rail and intra -city light rail systems.”

“Of course, this government is leaving on May 29, but definitely, the incoming government will have to continue. This is a noble project; it will benefit Nigerians , especially residents of the FCT.”

Before the President and his entourage embarked on a train ride to Idu terminus, Minister for FCT, Bala Mohammed, said the entire stretch of the rail line will be completed in August.

He said: “This project is driven by your grace with a robust financial plan that you bonded N150 billion for the project and that is why the time line has been easy to comply with and we have been able to take it to 98 per cent.”

“The only remaining portion that is not completed is the bridge behind the Aso Villa. Otherwise, everything has been delivered and we are trying to look at the challenges of financing because we are owing the contractors about N10 to N15 billion on the two roads.”

The President promised that government would fulfils its obligations on the debts.

“These projects have improved the face of Abuja tremendously and people who come to Abuja are full of praises because the roads are really making Abuja to look like a real modern city.

“We are quite pleased with the progress of work; we will do our best to see that the commitments of government are met,” he assured.
