PDP members stoned Jonathan’s campaign convoy, says Yuguda

    •Fani-Kayode: it’s not true

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation and the Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, have disagreed on the identities of those who pelted President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team in Bauchi and Katsina last week.

While Yuguda, who was elected on the platform of the PDP, insisted that the hoodlums that pelted the president’s team in Bauchi were recruited by Abuja-based PDP politicians, the Jonathan’s campaign organisation blamed the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) for the attack.

Speaking on a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa programme yesterday, Yuguda said: “I am sure and I want to let the world know that the people who did this thing were PDP members and those politicians in Abuja were the ones behind it. They were not APC members.

“They found these youths on the road and gave them brooms and they instructed them that when the President was passing, they should raise the brooms and pelt them at him.

“They did that so that the president would think that Isa Yuguda is against him. They have been telling him in Abuja that we are not supporting him. They did that to show the president that Isa Yuguda is nothing in Bauchi and to show that despite being an indigene of Bauchi, Isa Yuguda could not be respected with his guests in Bauchi.

“We were not aware of the plan ahead of the rally. They took us by surprise. Did you ever hear of such a disgrace to any guest in Bauchi, let alone the President?”

The governor’s position corroborated the statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that the stone-pelting hoodlums were recruited by certain PDP chieftains, as a decoy to blame the opposition for the dastardly act.

But the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP campaign organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, disagreed, insisting that the action was carried out by supporters of the APC.

He described the statements by the governor and the APC spokesman as “lies, ridiculous and unbelievable”, adding that the claims were “absurd, reckless and asinine.”

Fani-Kayode said: “Does it make any sense for the PDP to hire thugs to chant ‘’sai Buhari’’, to waive brooms in the air and to physically attack their own candidate’s convoy?  Does it make any sense for them to throw rocks at their own presidential candidate and injure his bodyguards?

“Honestly, it is clear to all those with discerning minds that the APC have lost touch with reality. They have been blinded by their hate, deceit and their sheer desperation for power.

“The truth is that they are the ones that have an inbred culture of violence and intolerance, and that encourage brutal and barbaric behaviour and not the PDP.

“The PDP values peace, tolerance, a plurality of views, differing opinions and the sanctity of life; but the APC do not.”

He warned the APC and its presidential candidate to be ready for what he described as “grave and far-reaching consequences,” if anything untoward should happen to Jonathan during the course of his campaign.

According to him, “All hell will break loose. The stoning, attacks, violence and intimidation have to stop and the safety and security of our presidential candidate, our supporters and our members must be guaranteed, if we wish to avoid being propelled into a vicious and reciprocal cycle of violence, turmoil, destruction and catastrophe in this country”.

  • Support for Jonathan

    Support for Jonathan

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Oyo State, Adebisi Olopoenia, has reiterated his commitment to the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Olopoenia, who spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday, assured President Jonathan of massive support in Oyo State and Southwest.

“President Jonathan is a leader, who has the people’s interest at heart. I believe and I am sure that the President will win next month,” he said.

He hailed the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, for leading the campaign for the president’s re-election in Oyo State.

“Oloye Akinjide should be praised for standing firmly for the campaign for President Jonathan’s re-election against all odds. She has brought good tidings to this state within the short period she was appointed minister.”

  • Why Edo won’t vote for Jonathan, by Oshiomhole

Why Edo won’t vote for Jonathan, by Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has said President Goodluck Jonathan abandoned the state in the last six years that he has been in office, despite securing 95 per cent votes from the state during his re-election in 2011.

The governor said the people had become wiser and would vote out the President on February 14 for abandoning them.

Oshiomhole spoke at the weekend at the All Progressives Congress (APC) rallies in Ehor, Uhumwode Local Government Area and at Igueben, Igueben Local Government Area.

The governor said despite several letters his administration wrote to the Federal Government for assistance on the erosion ravaging parts of the state, the Jonathan administration still abandoned Edo State.

He said: “The last time, we voted for President Jonathan. He got 95 per cent of the total votes in Edo State. Yet, I cannot think of any meaningful thing he has done in the state.

“We have written volumes of letters to Abuja on the Queen Ede erosion site. That erosion was caused by the Federal Government as a result of the design errors in the course of constructing the road to Asaba. It started as a small erosion. But over time, it has escalated.”

Oshiomhole added: “I have written for support from the Ecological Funds, which we are entitled to, to rebuild and reclaim the place. It has destroyed some houses, farmlands and a secondary school. Right now, it has almost destroyed a Catholic church. Yet, the Federal Government has not done anything.

“Last year, President Jonathan gave N2 billion each to some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) states, even where he lost election, to deal with erosion. Those that don’t have flood erosion were given money for desertification. But we in Edo State, who voted for him, got nothing.

“I am not lamenting this. We have learnt from it and we are determined not to repeat our mistakes. But the good news is that we have secured funds from the World Bank on our own effort to rebuild Queen Ede erosion and restore it and save the lives, farmlands and the property of the people who live around there. Soon, the construction work will start.

“For 16 years, the only Federal thing I see in Edo State is the resurfacing of Ofosu up to Benin old dual carriage way, which they only started after our government decided to construct additional lanes to Ugbowo. I can’t see any other thing they have done in 16 years.”

On the failure of the PDP-led Federal Government to prosecute those indicted in last year’s ill-fated Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment, Oshiomhole said it showed that Jonathan does not care about the welfare of the Nigerian youth.

He said: “Young people were defrauded in the name of providing jobs. They were asked to pay N1,000 to apply for Federal jobs that did not exist, illegally using consultants in clear breach of Federal laws.

“The PDP-led Federal Government defrauded our youths to the tune of N800 million. They organised a mock interview, using various stadia across the country and young people’s lives were wasted.

“The minister who presided over this national fraud was given honours. For the PDP, this is a normal way of life; not one person was punished. Several people died. Last week, the relatives of those who died in Benin were protesting to us that the Federal Government had not given them even the jobs they promised.”

The governor urged the people to vote out the PDP at the federal and other levels and in the country. He said: “I believe that with General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria will be in a safer hand, beginning with security. Under the PDP, security has completely collapsed. Insurgents have taken over our land. People are now afraid to go to church or mosque to worship.

    Olejeme drums support for Jonathan

The Chairman of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Dr. Ngozi Olejeme, has described President Goodluck Jonathan as an epitome of development, saying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate will continue to be accountable, accessible and approachable.

Olejeme, who is also Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee, Presidential Campaign Organisation, advised the electorate to lay emphasis on his achievements.

Speaking in Abuja, Olejeme said President Jonathan, through his people-oriented programmes and policies has rekindled the people’s confidence in civil rule and a better and prosperous future.

She praised Jonathan for putting the people at the centre of the formulation of government policies, providing facilities, encouraging women to participate in socio-economic and political activities, promoting foreign investments, providing ample incentives and giving exemplary leadership.

The PDP chieftain also extolled him for confronting the country’s problems, diversifying the  economy, reducing retail prices of petroleum products to reflect the downscaling in global oil prices, establishing 12 conventional and two specialized universities and cleaning up the electoral process.

Olejeme said: “The volumes of government programmes and projects are creating wealth and job opportunities, reviving collapsed business enterprises, stimulating agriculture and local food production.

Buhari’s certificate: ATTACKS BACKFIRE ON JONATHAN

A NUMBER of Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) leaders from the North are at loggerheads with the party’s Presidential Campaign Council over the controversy surrounding  the secondary school certificate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate,General Muhammadu Buhari.

The Northern PDP leaders are upset with the presidential campaign council for ‘ridiculing’ Buhari over the school certificate issue when the facts are obvious, multiple  party sources told The Nation yesterday.

over the school certificate issue when the facts are obvious, multiple  party  sources told The Nation yesterday.

Information yesterday from the United States of America (USA) where Buhari  attended one of the most prestigious military institutions  also shed light on his training there.

Sources said that  the certificate saga which the campaign council had obviously planned to use to rubbish   Buhari’s integrity  has now backfired in the North and the immediate worry is that the dust raised by the  controversy could cost the  PDP  more sympathy in the region.

“Most PDP leaders are worried that the issues being raised on Buhari’s eligibility may backfire on the party’s electoral fortunes,” one source said.

“I am aware that most PDP leaders and members from the North are just unhappy because the little goodwill for the party in the region may be completely lost.

“Already, the PDP is fast losing ground in the North since  the attacks on Buhari’s personality and credentials started. Some of those who had been sympathetic to PDP are now having a rethink.

“Some PDP leaders are already calling for a ceasefire on this certificate matter because it is portraying the party and its candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, as desperate.”

Another respected PDP leader said: “Some of our leaders and members in the North are angry. They are trying to use the certificate saga to reopen old prejudices by the South that Northerners are largely uneducated or without certificates. In 1979, they did it to ex-President Shehu  Shagari  by deriding him as a mere Grade II teacher.

“This type of politics will certainly not help our party at all. We have been making representation to the PDP leadership to halt this hate campaign.”

The PDP may also have  breached   Section 31(3-5) of the Electoral Act for joining issues with Buhari  on the certificate matter.

Sources  at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said   the PDP should  have laid its complaints between December 25, 2014 and January 1, 2015.

The commission,  in its timetable for the general elections  fixed December 25, 2014 to January 1, 2015 for claims and objections.

It was learnt that the PDP has failed to comply with three issues in Section 31 of the Electoral Act.

    These are:

    • Refusal to comply with the seven-day period for claims and objections

    • Failure to apply to  the INEC for a copy of Buhari’s nomination form

    • Ruling party yet to file any application before a High Court on Buhari’s credentials

Section 31(3-6) says: “The commission shall within seven days of the receipt of the personal particulars of the candidate publish same in the constituency where the candidate intends to contest the election.

“A person may apply to the commission for a copy of the nomination form affidavit and any other document submitted by a candidate at an election and the commission shall, upon the payment of a prescribed fee, issue person with a certified copy of the documents within 14 days.

“Any person who has reasonable grounds to believe that any information given by a candidate in the affidavit or any document submitted by that candidate is false may file a suit at the Federal High Court, High Court of a state or FCT against such person seeking a declaration that the information contained in the affidavit is false.

“If the court determines that any of the information contained in the affidavit of any document submitted by that candidate is false, the court shall issue an order disqualifying the candidate from contesting the election.”

A highly-placed source  said: “The PDP is confused because there is no record showing that either the party or any of its leaders has applied for a copy of the nomination form of Buhari from  the INEC.

“Instead, the party is just playing to the gallery in the media to heat up the polity. This is unfortunate for the nation’s political environment.

“As I am talking to you, the PDP is yet to comply with Section 31 of the Electoral Act on issues against Buhari.”

Meanwhile, the United States Army War College has opened up on how Gen. Buhari earned a Diploma from the elite institution.

The testimony by the college also confirmed that Buhari obtained a higher certificate beyond the minimum requirement of the West African School Certificate (WASC) required to be the nation’s President.

The college said the focus of the course was on Army professional education requirements.

The Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Army War College, Carol Kerr, made the disclosure in a January 23, 2015 response to an enquiry sent to the college by The Nation.

Kerr said : “The following is offered in response to questions you’ve forwarded to the Army War College. I am sending a single email so that you will all have the same information about the value of the 1980 diploma earned by Col. Buhari, and the role of international officers at the Army War College.

“Retired Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, of Nigeria, is a 1980 graduate of the 10-month Army War College resident education program, at Carlisle Barracks, Pa.

“Col. Buhari was a member of the third Army War College class to have included International Fellows. The Class of 1980 was the first student body to have a large enough number of International Fellows to sit one in every student seminar. The International Fellows Program was part of a major initiative to strengthen the Army War College curriculum by bringing broader perspectives of international partners into the War College experience.

“The Chief of Staff of the Army invites International Fellows from select countries to attend the Resident Education Program and Distance Education Program each year. These programs offer an opportunity for International Fellows to participate with U.S. students in seminar and to study, research, and write on subjects of significance to the security interests of their own and allied nations.

“The International Fellows establish mutual understanding and rapport with senior

U.S. officers and foreign officers and enrich the educational environment of USAWC.

“Since the International Fellows are immersed in U.S. culture, they have an opportunity to acquire firsthand knowledge of the United States and its institutions through study and travel.

“Since 1980, the International Fellows Program has expanded broadly. The Class of 2015 includes 79 international officers, representing 73 countries.

“Each student seminar group in the resident education program includes three to four International Fellows studying alongside US military officers of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, with representation from the US Coast Guard and selected civilians of several federal agencies.

“All US Army War College students are competitively selected for attendance – by their Service if a US military officer, or by their country’s armed forces when the country receives an invitation.

“In general terms, the Army War College resident education program still has the same major themes, albeit in 1980 there was more focus on operations. The college was, and remains, focused on professional education for national security professionals to serve society.

“Overwhelmingly the focus was and is on Army professional education requirements.”

The revelation by the college put paid to any agitation by the PDP.

Section 131 says: “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; (b) he has attained the age of forty (40) years; (c) he is a member of a political party; and (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its  equivalent.”

My sister died of heart related ailment, says Jonathan

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan confirmed yesterday that his younger sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan- Olei died of heart-related ailment. Nancy was interned yesterday in her Otuoke, Bayelsa State hometown. The president, who was giving the vote of thanks at her funeral service at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Otuoke, recalled that since his tenure as deputy governor of Bayelsa, Nancy used to go to India for treatment. He said: “Nancy that died is my immediate younger sister, though we are not of the same mother. I was very sad when she died because I knew she had been passing through pains for a very long time.

Sometimes I felt God has been really kind to her. “She started developing problems with her heart when I was deputy governor, then I started asking questions. I asked my personal physician where could we treat her; that she had problems with her iota valve. My doctor told me the nearest place to treat her was Ghana. “So, I said we have so many teaching hospitals in Nigeria and none can attempt to work on a human heart. I was worried. But today I am happy that the University of Ibadan is handling open heart surgery.” “We battled with her health and she was taken to India on, and on and for over three years she had been down. When her immediate younger brother died, she could not even attend the burial.”

  • Jonathan’s supporters take concert to varsities

A group, Goodluck/Sambo 2015 Initiative (GS2I),  is planning to rally support for the PDP presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, by staging a series of concerts in some Nigerian universities.

They said 16 universities have been picked for the concert, including University of Abuja, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), University of Jos and University of Benin.

Leader of the group, Ikenna Chidoka, said that 15 popular Disc Jockeys, led by Cool FM’s D.J TTB, have been selected to thrill the crowd.

Tagged Goodluck/Sambo 2005 Rave, Chidoka, said that the show, which will also feature some comedians, will be used to sensitise the youths on the need to eschew violence, in the forthcoming elections.

He said: “It is quite obvious that we support the Goodluck/Sambo ticket, but not only will we be telling youths to vote for continuity due to how well the Jonathan  administration has done in the area of youth empowerment, we will also preach the message of non-violence.

“Already we are reaching out to young people on the social media on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag#gsr2015 on Twitter, to say we don’t have to fight each other because we have preferred candidates. We should not allow ourselves to be used to cause harm; rather we should allow our votes do the talking.”

  • Jonathan’s convoy stoned in Bauchi

    Jonathan’s convoy stoned in Bauchi

The convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan was yesterday stoned in Bauchi State, where he held a campaign.

His convoy was also stoned in Katsina State on Tuesday when leaving the home of the mother of the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The tense atmosphere in Bauchi State and at the rally might have resulted in the rushed programme of the campaign.

Unconfirmed sources said about six presidential bodyguards were injured, as the President’s convoy drove to the airport.

Speaking at the Ibrahim Babangida Square venue of the rally, President Jonathan said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would do its best for the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria.

With the continued support of Bauchi people and Nigerians, he said, “no retrogressive force will be able to dislodge the ruling party.”

Jonathan said no amount of opposition would be allowed to halt the good work his administration was doing for Bauchi people.

Urging the people to vote PDP candidates at all levels, the President said his administration would empower youths with education, skill acquisition programmes and job creation, so that politicians would stop using them to perpetrate violence.

He told the gathering to ask those who are instigating the youth to embark on violence, what they have done for the people.

Mentioning the great Nigerians produced by the state, including foremost nationalist, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Jonathan said Balewa never instigated Nigerians against each other.

“The great man never instigated us against one an other. He preached peace, unity and oneness,” the President said.

He continued: “ No retrogressive force can push PDP behind. We must continue to empower our youths through job creation, training and formal education so that politicians will not use us for negative activities.

“This state has strong agricultural potential. We have been building dams across the states to boost the sector.

“The people who are instigating us cannot tell us what they have done for us. Keep supporting the PDP, we will work with you for more democratic dividends.”

Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio reminded the people that insurgency was not created by Jonathan, adding that even the late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf, was not killed under Jonathan administration.

He urged the people to support PDP at all levels.

The President visited the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwan Suleiman Adamu, where he assured him that his administration would soon stop insurgency in the Northeast.

Stressing that his administration had achieved a lot, he regreted that the Boko Haram insurgency was diverting attention from his administration’s achievements.

Death wish advert: ‘Jonathan should apologise’

A Northern group, The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF), has given President Goodluck Jonathan a seven-day ultimatum to publiclly apologise to the people in the region over the death wish advert by Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, or lose all the votes in the North’s 19 states.

The NYLF frowned at the advertisement, which was placed on the front pages of two national newspapers on Monday by Fayose to canvass support for Jonathan with a Bible quotation.

In a statement by its National Chairman, Comrade Elliot Afiyo, the forum said if Jonathan failed to apologise within the seven days and call Fayose to order, the President and his the PDP would lose the North’s votes in next month’s elections.

The statement said: “We consider this act as a deliberate and conscious attempt to cause chaos in the country in order to call for election postponement; more so that it is coming from a leader and member of the ruling PDP. The silence from PDP and the Presidency has given credence to this belief that the death wish advert was actually the handiwork of the Presidency and not that of Fayose alone.”

It added: “In this regard, we wish to state clearly that as much as the forum is trying to cool the overstretched nerves of Northern youths, it is absolutely necessary that the President personally dissociates himself clearly from this advert.”

  • Jonathan’s re-election campaign on shaky note

Jonathan’s re-election campaign on shaky note

President Goodluck Jonathan stunned the audience at the commencement of his presidential campaign in Lagos when he said his generation has failed the nation. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN who was at the venue revisits the rally and its implication for his second term bid.

President Goodluck Jonathan started his re-election campaign in Lagos recently on a shaky note. The event was witnessed by prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, National Chairman Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, governors and governorship flag bearers.

Chieftains of the party took turns to address the crowd. They include the Co-ordinator of the President’s campaign in the Southwest and Ondo State governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; Chairman of the National Campaign Committee Col. Ahmadu Ali; Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; the PDP leader in Lagos State, Chief Olabode George, and Ekiti State Governor Mr Ayo Fayose.

They did their best to extol the virtues and achievements of President Jonathan and urged Nigerians to endorse his re-election in February. Mimiko, for instance, described President Jonathan as the most criticised, abused and insulted leader in this country. He said given his performance, Nigerians across the country can feel the impact of his administration in agriculture, power supply, education and resuscitation of rail system.

But, the campaign experienced some awkward moments, when Ali mounted the podium. It did not quite jell with the audience when the National Campaign Committee chairman uttered the following statement: “The PDP is the agent of change. We fought for democracy when others fled the country. We have remained in power for 16 consecutive years.” He added that Nigerians should vote for the party, for the above reasons. The message was lost on the audience because neither Ali, nor his other colleagues were known to be associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other civil rights organisations that fought military for the return of democracy.

As if Ali’s goof was not enough, President Jonathan also stunned the audience when he said that his address would be directed at young people, especially those aged between 18 and 23, who will be voting for the first time this year. More than 80 per cent of people present were 30 years and above. Invariably, President Jonathan considered this category of voters inconsequential to his re-election bid.

The audience had expected the President to explain what he has been doing in the past six years and what he intends to, if re-elected. Instead, he spent more time talking about those criticising his government. Some observers expressed dismay and disappointment at the inability of the President to utilise the opportunity offered by his campaign outing to tell Nigerians what he has done for them since his assumption of office. The same President Jonathan had earlier admonished parties and candidates to dwell on issues agitating the minds of Nigerians and how these can be solved.

Jonathan also shocked the audience when he said his generation has failed and urged the youth to vote for young people. He said: “I do not want to address old people like me because we have failed completely. We are spent already. This election is about young people. It is either you vote for the young people to be relevant in this country or your vote will be irrelevant. We have just introduced our governorship candidates and you can see that many of them are within your age bracket.”

Despite saying his generation had failed the nation Jonathan still went ahead to urge the youths to take their destiny in their hands by voting for the PDP.  He did not explain how or why a vote for a failed and finished generation within the PDP would be more beneficial to the country’s youth than a vote for the same category of persons within the APC.

The President vehemently condemned and rejected the allegation by his opponents and critics that his administration was soft on corruption. Attributing his success in fighting corruption to the innovation introduced into fertiliser distribution, Jonathan said the emphasis of his administration was in preventing corruption from taking place, rather than jailing those who loot the treasury. To him, that is more effective way of fighting corruption.

On security, Jonathan said the blame for the poor combat readiness of the Armed Forces should not be heaped on him because he inherited a weak army, navy and air force that had not been properly funded and equipped over the years by his predecessors. According to him, these people did not buy anything for the Nigerian soldiers. “Ask them what they did with the defence budget throughout the whole time they were in government, no equipment was bought for the armed forces,” he added. He was, however, not specific on which of the successive administrations.

To the criticism that a poorly equipped army was deployed to fight Boko Haram insurgents, Jonathan said: “Nobody equips the Armed Forces overnight. They are built over the years. Even if we spend $10 billion today, it cannot immediately equip the Army, Navy and Air Force because their capacities are built over the years. It takes a period of time”.

Public affairs analyst, Dr. Friday Ibok was disappointed that President Jonathan turned his maiden campaign into a forum of attacking personalities, rather than address the issues that are critical to the welfare of Nigerians. He said as a presidential candidate what the audience and those watching him live on television wanted to hear from him was what he had done in the past six years as President of Nigeria and what he would do in the next four years if he was re-elected.

Ibok said: “For almost 30 minutes that he spoke, President Jonathan never promised Nigerians anything, but used the whole time attacking past leaders. I am worried because as a President he should know better. Members of his campaign team should have prepared for such a critical public function.

“He admitted failure when he said his generation has failed the country and urged the youth to vote for the young ones if they want to be relevant in the country. What Mr. President was saying is that the salvation of this country lay in the hands of those within the age bracket of 18 and 23. So, the elders who travelled from different parts of the country to witness his campaign inauguration at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos are inconsequential and risked their lives for nothing. The irony of it is that Jonathan is still canvassing for their votes to win. It is unfortunate.”

In his response to President Jonathan’s utterances, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said Jonathan’s problems are personal, not generational. The former Lagos State Governor asked him to consider his deficiencies as his personal failure and that of his party, the PDP.

“It amounts to an error for the President to generalise the shortcomings as generational failure. If the President doesn’t know the history and responsibilities of his office, he should quit the office and go back home,” he said.

Convener, Nigeria Voters Assembly (NVA), Comrade Mashood Erubami carpets the President for failing to run an issue-based campaign. According to him, it is very disheartening that President Jonathan has continued to chase shadow leaving the substance out of his campaign in all the states he has visited.

Erubami argued that “he has at his own instance widened the gap of disconnect in the heart of those who have decided to use the 2015 election to change their lives by removing their destinies from the hands of Jonathan and likes of Femi Fani-Kayode, so that a new order could emerge from the hands of new leaders who abound in the APC which today represent the greatness that Nigerians are seeking.”

He said buying equipment for the army, navy, air force and police is not an end in itself, but a means of achieving the end of peace and security in the land. “Those who failed to equip the security agencies did not do much because the nation was not under the current siege under which Jonathan has put the country and his people. During the Buhari era, even under the Ibrahim Babangida’s administration, our children were not stolen, no group of political thugs gang up against the people nor steal their commonwealth unabashed as under the Jonathan.  Security agencies were not as partisan and irresponsible like we found in the Department of State Security (DSS) and the police misbehaving today under the clueless, unimpressive and un-rehearsed administration of Dr. Jonathan.”

Student activist Jerry Agbeyegbe, who watched the inauguration of the President’s campaign on television, was shocked to hear the President saying his generation has failed the nation. He believes President Jonathan came to such conclusion out of sheer frustration and disappointment.

“I think the President is overwhelmed with the problems of insecurity, corruption and mismanagement of the economy which his administration has failed to tackle head on. It is wrong to his own ineptitude to conclude that his generation has failed the nation. The problem is leadership deficiency which is peculiar to the people at the helm of affairs. The buck stops on Mr. President’s table and he must accept responsibility that his government has failed.

Erubami was not impressed with President Jonathan’s handling of the abducted Chibok girls who have spent close to 280 days in captivity, reported scams in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), police pension fund, missing $20 billion oil money, $9 million arms deal, oil theft and power outage. The human right activist said what Nigerians are expecting to hear are the reasons for monumental failure of President Jonathan on these issues, despite the power he wields under the constitution and the resource available to the country which can be used to fix the country.
