    England’s Hodgson ‘likes’ Jordan Ibe

England manager, Roy Hodgson, has confirmed he likes Liverpool forward, Jordon Ibe, “very much,” but he will not rush to cap him simply because the player could also be snapped up by Nigeria.

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has already met with 19-year-old Ibe over the possibility of playing for Super Eagles, although the forward has represented England at various age-grade levels including the U-21s, africanFootbsall.com reports.

According to the Sunday People of London, Hodgson said Ibe must show desire to play to the Three Lions before he will invite him to camp.

“The fact is he’s playing for the U-21s. They play for the Under-21s because they want to play for England,” africanFootball.com quoted Hodgson as saying to the newspaper.

“But my attitude for that is quite clear – I want players who want to play for England. I am not going to start making players English by giving them a few minutes in games.

“I want Jordon to fight for his place in the team like everyone else. He is certainly a player we like very much and certainly a player we have eyes on.

“It’s far from impossible that he gets called up in one of the next games. But if we do call him up it won’t be because we are worried about other nations.

“We’re England. And when it gets so bad that we can’t get enough players who want to play for England, who want to put the England shirt on, then we are in a difficult period.”

•Says Nigerian is an embodiment of talent

Nigeria-born Liverpool winger Jordan Ibe has been tipped to rank among the top English Premier League (EPL) players in the future. Teammate Joe Allen, who made the prediction, said it is not surprising that the 19-year-old has become an instant hit in the Reds senior team

Ibe made his second EPL start against Everton earlier this month and has since followed it up with further impressive showings against Tottenham and Besiktas.

The former Wycombe Wanderers, who is being closely monitored by out-of-contract Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, won the decisive penalty against Besiktas in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday as Liverpool won 1-0, and Allen lavished praise on the highly rated winger.

“From the first time I saw him I always knew Jordon had the raw talent to go as far as he wants in the game,” he told the club’s official website.

“He has been given his opportunity and he has taken it with both hands, which is great to see and it’s like having a new signing, which has been brilliant for the whole team.

“He was brilliant against Besiktas and he won us the penalty. To take a lead into the second leg is really important and we did everything we could to get the goal.

“I know [the goal] came late but we kept a clean sheet and made sure they didn’t get an away goal, which was an added bonus.”

With a 1-0 first-leg lead to defend in Turkey next week, and a home FA Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers on the horizon, Allen has his sights firmly set on lifting silverware.

“That’s our aim – to win a trophy,” he said. “We really have got the talent and we are pushing ourselves to try and win something this season.

“Considering the quite slow start we had I think we have really picked up the pace now and we are building up momentum at the right time in the season,” he submitted even as maintained that Ibe’s contribution in forthcoming outings will be vital.

Following Ibe’s impressive show on Thursday in the Europa clash, there are strong indications that he will be paraded when Liverpool take on Southampton today in the EPL.
