    Court jailed 19-year-old for criminal intimidation

    A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old man, Shuaibu Abdullahi, to one imprisonment for criminal intimidation.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Jovita Binjin, convicted Abdullahi of Bauch Road, Jos, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal intimidation and criminal force on arraignment.

    On count one, Binjin sentenced Abdullahi to four months imprisonment but with an option of N2, 000 fine, and six months imprisonment on count two, with N3, 000 fine option.

    After the conviction, the magistrate said, “I hope this will serve as deterrent to others wanting to commit such crime.’’

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Gushe Michanan, had told the court that the case was reported to Nassarawa Gwong Police Station by one Shuaibu Babale of Bauchi Road.

    Michanan said that the convict threatened to kill the complainant’s brother with a knife and in the process, picked a stick and hit him on the head.

    “During police investigation, damaged five Airtel, two MTN and one Glo sim cards were recovered from the convict, and he could not give any satisfactory account of the sim cards in his possession,” he said.

    He told the court that the offences contravened sections 263 and 390 of the Penal Code.

  • Student arraigned for stabbing man

    A 20-year-old student, Idris Isah,who allegedly stabbed one Abbas Salihu with a knife and stole his cell phone, appeared before a Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

    The accused, a resident of Tudun Wada, Jos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, causing hurt and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Mr Joshua Kasuwa, told the court that Salihu, a resident of Yan-Doya, Gadan Bako, Jos, reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwom police station, on March 24.

    Kasuwa said that the accused, and some others still at large, accosted the complainant on the road, and started beating him “without any reason”.

    “The accused used a knife and stabbed the complainant on his forehead; while he was on the floor writhing in pains, they stole his phone valued at N70,000,’’ he said.

    Kasuwa said that the accused was arrested in his house after a tip-off to the police, by a member of the public.

    “ During investigation, Isah confessed that it was one Kabiru, who is still at large, that stabbed the complainant,’’ he said

    The offence contravened Sections 97, 288 and 323 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Binjin said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should submit two recent passport-sized photographs and their national ID cards to the court.

    The case was adjourned to April 19, for mention.

  • Three men docked for criminal intimidation, stealing

    The Police on Thursday arraigned three businessmen in a Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged criminal intimidation and stealing from their business partner.

    The men, Ken Osagie, David Bello, and Muyiwa Komolafe, all of No. 5 Panyam St., Jos, were charged with criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, mischief and theft.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Thomas Amuku, told the court that one Ishaku Kargo, of Rock Haven, Jos, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Division Police Station on Jan. 24.

    Amuku said that the defendants on the same date went to the complainant’s house to retrieve N30, 000 given to him as witness to a contract that failed.

    Amuku said that confrontation ensued, and in the process, the defendants broke the complainant’s Nokia cell phone, valued at N49, 000, and also stole N73, 000 cash belonging to him.

    The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the accused persons confessed to have committed the crime.

    He added that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 97, 322, 397 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Mafuyai, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50, 000 each, and two sureties each in like sum.

    The case was adjourned till April 27 for hearing.

  • Three men jailed for stealing palm oil, phones

    A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced three men – David Bulus, 24, Adebayo Musa, 25, and Hafisu Ibrahim, 28 – to various jail terms for stealing palm oil.

    Other items stolen by the convicts included phones and TV monitor valued at N128,000 and N6,000 cash.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first accused, Bulus, was charged with criminal trespass, housebreaking and theft, while the second and third accused were charged with receiving stolen property.

    The magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, sentenced the trio after pleading guilty to the crimes.

    Binjin sentenced Bulus to 20 months in prison for trespass, housebreaking and theft, while the second and third accused were jailed 10 months each, for receiving stolen property.

    He, however, gave the first convict an option of N10,000 fine, while the second and third accused were given fine options of N5,000 each.

    The magistrate said that the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

    Earlier, the police prosecutor, Mr Shuaibu Mohammed, had told the court that one Ndubuisi Uche, resident at No. 38 Nabor, Nasarawa Gwom, reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwom Police Station, on March 8.

    Mohammed said that the first accused person, Bulus, broke into the complainant’s house and stole some items and listed them to include palm oil, a TV monitor, UPS, two phones, some scraps, and N6,000 cash.

    The prosecutor told the court that Bulus later sold the stolen palm oil to one Hafiu Ibrahim, at the rate of N10,500, while the scraps were sold to one Adebayo Musa, at the rate of N2,500.

    He said that the accused person sold the remaining items to two other persons, who had not been arrested.

    “During police investigation, the accused persons pleaded guilty thereby running foul of sections 348, 346, 288 and 317 of the Penal Code,” he told the court.

  • Man jailed 6 months for stealing a bag of rice

    A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 24-year-old man to six months imprisonment for stealing one bag of rice, valued at N20,000.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Jovita Binjin, sentenced the convict, Olataju Habinu, after he pleaded guilty to the crime.

    Habinu, in his plea for leniency, attributed his action to devil and hunger.

    “It was the devil that made me do it. I didn’t know what came over me and I was hungry. I wanted to sell some of it and reserve some for myself.

    “Have mercy on me. I will not do it again,” he pleaded.

    In his ruling, the magistrate sentenced Habinu to three months in prison for trespass and another three months for theft.

    He, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N5,000.

    The magistrate said that the sentence was meant to serve as deterrent to those who might want to commit similar acts.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Shuaibu Mohammed, told the court that the accused trespassed into the house of one Matthew Pankyes in Chwalnyap, Jos and stole a bag of rice.

    He said that the accused with the help of another man now at large, successfully removed the bag of rice from the complainant’s apartment and made away with it.

    The said that vigilant neighbours, who saw the convict, took the bag of rice gave him a chase and tracked him to his hide out.

    The offences contravened Sections 343 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    Court sentences man for disturbing religious assembly

    A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Adamu Yakubu, to 12 months imprisonment for disturbing a religious assembly.

    Yakubu of Terminus Market, Jos, was charged with criminal conspiracy and disturbing a religious assembly contrary to Sections 97 and 212 of the Penal Code.

    The Magistrate, Mr Ashaibu Wase, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    Wase, who gave him an option to pay fine of N3,000, said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

    Prosecutor Thomas Amuku had told the court that Insp. Danladi Sabo of the ‘A’ Division Police Station, while on patrol arrested the convict and took him to the station on March 28.

    Amuku said that the convict and another now at large conspired and interrupted a Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Easter rally.

     

    “The duo undressed themselves and started to interrupt an Easter rally organised by CAN around the Charcoal Market in Terminus.

    “They were trying to also incite others to join them in interrupting the rally but the police arrested the convict while the other man escaped,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict confessed committed the crime
