You’re a “little man’’, Chelsea’s Conte berates Mourinho

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte continued his ongoing feud with Jose Mourinho on Saturday by calling the Manchester United manager “a little man”.

Mourinho made a pointed comment about match-fixing during the week, a reference to the four-month suspension Conte was handed in the 2012/2013 season.

His offence was his failure to report match-fixing at his previous club Siena.

He was later cleared by an Italian court of any wrongdoing.

“I think when you try to hurt a person, especially if you know very well the truth of what happens, the court proved my innocence.

“When you do this it means you are a little man,” Conte said after Chelsea’s 0-0 FA Cup third-round draw at Championship side Norwich City.

“But this is the not the first time. He does this in the past and he continues to do this in the present.”

Mourinho and Conte have never been friends but their relationship deteriorated this week after Mourinho spoke about some managers behaving “like a clown” on the touchline.

This was taken as a reference to Conte and Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp.

In response on Friday, the Chelsea manager accused the Portuguese of “senile dementia”, which led to Mourinho saying he had not mentioned any names.

“This is his way, it is no surprise. We all know him,” Conte said. “Life will go on, I‘m not worried about him.”

Conte refused to criticise his players after making nine changes for the match against Norwich.

“It’s a bit frustrating. We knew the difficulty of the game. When you play away in this competition it’s not easy,” he said.

“In the first half we had difficulty to attack but in the second half we created chances to score.

“Norwich deserve to have another game. For us it’s not simple to add another game in the schedule. These are the rules though.”(Reuters/NAN)

  • Pep: i and Mourinho are like twins

Pep: i and Mourinho are like twins

Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have enjoyed a rivalry, in Spain and England, that has at times been acrimonious but the Manchester City manager believes they have something in common.

The Spaniard believes that when it comes to the desire to win trophies they are identical.

“Definitely. In that, we are twins,” said Guardiola when asked, ahead of Sunday’s derby clash, if he was as obsessed with winning as his United and former Real Madrid counterpart.

“They want to win trophies, we want to win trophies.

“I think Antonio Conte is the same as well, and Jurgen (Klopp) and Mauricio (Pochettino), and in all the leagues around the world, the managers are (like that),” the former FC Barcelona manager added.

“I never criticise my colleagues for the way they play. I never did in the past, I will never do it.

“Football is magnificent for that, because every manager plays in the way they play. There are different ways to enjoy football. It’s simple like that,” he said.

Keeping it simple is Guardiola’s mantra ahead of the highly anticipated derby.

Although City head to Old Trafford with an eight-point lead over their local rivals, the Spaniard is determined that his team keep their focus.

Their focus, he said, will be on doing what they have done so well this season — playing their style of possession football.

“The big challenge is to play good, to try to control the start point. It’s hard, because it’s United at Old Trafford. We want to try to play our game.

“The focus is going there relaxed and knowing that if we don’t win the individual duels, it will be almost impossible to beat them,” Guardiola said.

“We will try to play well, to play good football, what we have done, to be what we are. So I would like to finish the game and go to the locker room and feel we were what we have been for the season.

“As for the result, nobody knows what is going to happen. We will try to find the best way to play well and to win the game,” he said.

While a victory would send City 11 points clear ahead of the festive season, Guardiola has little time for the notion that the game could be a title decider.

“Winning, drawing or losing on Sunday, we are not going to win or lose the English Premier League. It’s December,” he said.

“It’s an important game, because it’s United. You can get points and deny your opponent points. But it’s the same for them.

“I am not going into the game thinking: OK, we have an eight-point lead. What do I have to do because we have an eight-point lead? The Premier League is a marathon. We haven’t even arrived at the halfway stage yet.

“There are a lot of points to play for, more than 70. We just focus on the game, and the result, and then after, recovery and then thinking about Swansea three days later.

“It’s simple like that. It’s about going there and doing our game. That is what I want to see from my players.”

  • Manchester derby: It’s not about height says Jose

Manchester derby: It’s not about height says Jose

Jose Mourinho has dismissed suggestions that the Manchester derby at Old Trafford will be a battle of United’s giants against City’s genius.

City have been vulnerable at set-pieces in recent games and Pep Guardiola has told his players to restrict the number of freekicks they give away to a United side that could include a number of six-footers in Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones.

When the height issue was put to Mourinho at his pre-match press conference, the united boss chose to look at the other side of the coin.

‘I think it will be easy for (Vincent) Kompany to compete against (Juan) Mata in the air,’ he said sarcastically.

Mourinho was reluctant to try and predict how the game would go, with many believing that United will be cautious and look to hit City on the break.

‘Football is unpredictable,’ he added. ‘You can try, me as a manager, I can try to define a game plan, to work in a direction but football is unpredictable.

‘We don’t know what can happen. There are so many things that are out of control that can totally transform the direction of the game. I wouldn’t risk saying what game we are going to have.

‘We are a better team than last year, no doubts about it, I think City is also a better team than last season. I think we can (win the league) but I think other teams can be champions.’

It is however good news for Man City as David Silva is set to feature in the Sunday showdown after returning from injury

The Spain international sustained a knock while scoring the winner in City’s late 2-1 triumph over West Ham in their last Premier League outing, missing the Champions League defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk as a result.

The news provides City with a major boost given the playmaker’s immense start to the season, setting up 10 goals in all competitions already.

“He is going to play,” Guardiola told reporters at his pre-match news conference, Friday he told me he feels really good.”

I and Ibrahimovic kicked each other in training – Rojo

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has revealed that he and Zlatan Ibrahimovic kicked themselves in training.

The duo returned to the first team squad two weeks ago after picking up injury in a Europa League match against Anderlecht in April

And According to the Argentine defender, Coach Jose Mourinho has warned the two to desist from kicking each other in order to avoid injuries.

“[Mourinho] always tells us to play calmly in practice because, with Ibrahimovic, we kill each other with kicks,” Rojo, as quoted by Marca.

On his relationship with Ibrahimovic, Rojo described the Sweedish striker as an ‘amazing character,’ who is always happy

Rojo added: “He’s always happy and close to the players. He helped me a lot. He got the best out of me.”

“He’s an amazing character, but for those who don’t know him, he seems big-headed,” he noted.

“He’s a phenomenon, he’s a beast who goes forward and wants to win everything.”

  • Willian helps Chelsea hold Liverpool at Anfield

Willian helps Chelsea hold Liverpool at Anfield

A strange 85th minute goal from Brazilian Willian earned English Premier League champions Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday.

This was after Mohamed Salah’s 15th goal of the season looked to have given the hosts the three points.

Two minutes after coming on as a late substitute at Anfield, Willian whipped in an attempted cross from the right which floated over Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the net.

Salah, who was outstanding for Liverpool, had put his team ahead in the 65th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain poked the ball away from a hesitant Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The Egyptian then pounced on the loose ball to fire past Courtois.

The result leaves Chelsea in third place on 26 points, eight behind leaders Manchester City who play on Sunday, while Liverpool are fifth on 23 points.

In other Premier League games also played on Saturday Jose Mourinho’s United bounced back from their surprise UEFA Champions League defeat at Basel in midweek to win.

It was their 39th straight home win in all competitions.

The win also meant the Red Devils equalled a 51-year-old record set by Sir Matt Busby, thanks to Lewis Dunk’s second half own goal.

“I think we were more spirit and heart than quality. My boys didn’t play well but they gave everything,” Mourinho said.

“For me probably Brighton deserve more than the result they got.”

Also, Tottenham’s bid to win the title for the first time since 1961 was left in tatters after a 1-1 draw with lowly West Bromwich Albion left them 10 points behind City.

Spurs have had mixed results at Wembley since moving into their temporary home while White Hart Lane is rebuilt.

But, once again, they lacked a cutting edge against supposedly inferior opponents.

“We weren’t clinical. It is always difficult in the Premier League when you concede a goal so early,” Pochettino said.

“I’m disappointed because the effort was massive, but we lost two points.”

  • PSG step up interest in Jose Mourinho

PSG step up interest in Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may not be impressing everyone right now, but not Paris Saint-Germain.

Mourinho, 54, spoke glowingly about PSG last month and numerous reports in France and the UK claim that Les Parisiens have reached out to Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, about him managing in the French capital, plus Mourinho wants assurances United will spend PSG-level cash. After a huge splurge this summer which saw them break the world transfer record twice to sign

Neymar from Barcelona for $265 million and Kylian Mbappe from Monaco for $208 million, Mourinho wants United’s hierarchy to back him in the transfer market.

Another report from the BBC says that Mourinho has been told he must sell players in January before he can bring in anyone else.

In his previous interview with French outlet TF1, Mourinho said that he would not finish his coaching career at Old Trafford which led to PSG, currently coached by Unai Emery, reaching out about his availability.

Mourinho’s deal at United runs out at the end of next season and despite guiding the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League and into second place in the Premier League 11 games into this season, plenty of critics are circling with regards to the defensive style of play at United.

League titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain prove Mourinho’s worth and two Champions

League titles over the years have added to his legend as a serial winner with FC Porto, Chelsea,

Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea again, and then United last season.

But maybe Mourinho has realized that it will take PSG-money to overtake Manchester City as the elite club in the Premier League for the next few years and he will try and get out of United next summer? PSG’s current boss, Emery, is on a short leash after finishing second in Ligue 1 last season and an incredible collapse in the Champions League Round of 16 against Barcelona.

A blank checkbook and the chance to manage Neymar, Mbappe and Edinson Cavani would be the stuff dreams are made of for any manager. Especially Mourinho.

All of that aside, call me a cynic, but this PSG speculation feels like Mourinho is pushing pretty hard to get a new long-term deal at United. Or, at the very least, a spending spree in

January from Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward,so he can try and close the ever-widening gap with Manchester City.

  • Jose celebrates with daughter Matilde @21

Jose celebrates with daughter Matilde @21

Jose Mourinho’s mind will no doubt be occupied by his return journey to former club Chelsea on Sunday, he nonetheless had no choice but celebrate with daughter Matilde who turned 21 on Saturday

And the proud father took to Instagram to celebrate his daughter’s landmark birthday with a selfie, followed by another image flashing back to her younger years.

In his first post, translated from Portuguese, Mourinho wrote: ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAUGHTER, 21 years of making us smile.’

The second sees a much younger looking Mourinho standing in central London holding little Matilde.

It’s a given that the image was taken long before Mourinho announced himself on the European stage with his Champions League triumph with Porto.

Judging by his looks in the snap, it came when the former Inter and Real Madrid manager was working as an assistant prior to his breakthrough as a manager.

Sunday though, brings a different kind of visit to London, and undoubtedly a much more professional one.

Mourinho takes his side to Stamford Bridge for his third match against former club Chelsea with United, looking to build on April’s 2-0 victory at Old Trafford and find revenge for the 4-0 thrashing he was dealt at the hands of Antonio Conte’s champions last season.

Conte has found himself in difficulties in west London after a disappointing Champions League showing on Tuesday night at Roma – losing 3-0 – and has reignited the flame of his rivalry with Mourinho by calling for respect.

‘I have respect for his (Mourinho’s) job. He must have respect for my job,’ he commented.

But while Conte has earned the kudos of so many, his predecessor Mourinho responded to the Italian’s plea with a jibe at ‘crying’ over injury woes, something that Conte has been riled by in the past. Mourinho used Paul Pogba as his prime example.

‘I know that I moan about a lot of things but I don’t with injuries,’ he said. ‘Probably I should cry every week about our injuries. Any other manager would be speaking about Pogba every day.

‘I don’t speak about Pogba one single time, it’s only when you ask me about his situation.’

  • Tax Fraud charges: Its case closed-Jose

Tax Fraud charges: Its case closed-Jose

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he has paid to settle accusations of tax fraud in Spain.

The 54-year-old attended court in Pozuelo de Alcarcon on Friday to answer charges of tax fraud totalling €3.3million, which he has always denied.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Mourinho said “the case is closed” and that he only attended to settle the matter.

“I was told that my tax situation was completely legal,” he said, as quoted by ESPN.

“A few years later I was told that there was an investigation opened and they told me that to regularise my situation I had to pay sum X.

“I did not answer, I did not argue, I have paid and signed with the state that I am definitely in compliance and the case is closed. That is why I am here, nothing else.”

Mourinho was summoned at the end of September over allegations he defrauded Spanish tax authorities of €3.3m between 2011 and 2012, while he was head coach of Real Madrid.

When the charges were announced in June, Mourinho’s representatives issued a statement denying he had been contacted by prosecutors and insisting his taxes had been paid in full.

United were forced to rearrange their pre-game media duties ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea due to the hearings but Mourinho insisted it was not a distraction.

“It’s just a change of normal training time because I want to be there and I can’t be there in the morning so I have to change the timings,” he said on Thursday.

Jose tax fraud case threatens Man U Chelsea clash

Jose Mourinho’s tax fraud case is in danger of disrupting Manchester United’s preparations for their match at Chelsea this weekend, with the Old Trafford boss set to travel to Spain for the hearing on Friday.

United have brought Mourinho’s weekly press conference forward 24 hours from its usual slot to Thursday, and sources in Spain say they expect the Portuguese coach to be in court.

Mourinho’s No.2 Rui Faria and his coaching staff will oversee training if he is out of the country, but the situation would be far from ideal.

He suffered his biggest ever Premier League defeat as a coach when United were beaten 4-0 on his return to Stamford Bridge in October, and can expect another stern test against Antonio Conte’s side on Sunday.

Mourinho is accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of £2.9million during his time in charge of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 by not declaring profits from image rights.

The case is due to be heard in Madrid at 10am, just two days before United face Chelsea. Mourinho has denied the charges.

He settled a previous claim against him in 2014, paying a penalty of £1m, but prosecutors claimed in June that some of the information in that settlement was incorrect.

Mourinho responded by issuing a statement insisting that his taxes had been paid in full. It read: ‘Jose Mourinho has not received any notification with regards to the news published today.

‘To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process.

‘Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 until May 2013, paid more than €26m (£22.7m) in taxes, with an average tax rate over 41 per cent, and accepted the regularisation proposals made by the Spanish tax authorities in 2015 regarding the years 2011 and 2012 and entering into a settlement agreement regarding 2013.’

  • Mourinho explains Lukaku penalty snub

    Mourinho explains Lukaku penalty snub

Without a goal in the previous five games, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was quick to grab the ball when his team was awarded a penalty in the 78th minute of their Champions League game against Benfica.

United were 1-0 up and had already missed one penalty, a soft effort from Anthony Martial saved by Benfica’s 18-year-old keeper Mile Svilar.

But with Lukaku ready to end his barren spell and secure the win, United manager Jose Mourinho signaled he wanted someone else to take the spot-kick.

Spanish substitute Ander Herrera showed his willingness to take the kick, but still Mourinho was not happy until his clear choice, Dutch defender Daley Blind was given the ball and drove confidently down the middle.

It was an unusual scene but Mourinho said it was simply the boss doing his job.

“I am paid to take decisions – good or bad. In the first half the decision was bad because the player I chose to take the penalty missed,” he said.

“In the second half I made another decision and I don’t see the drama.

The penalty taker for this match was Martial, he took it in the first half and missed and he was not even on the pitch for the second one.

“Then I have to make a decision.

“Romelu wants to take, he had the personality to take the responsibility, Herrera the same, but my decision, based on what we did in training in the past couple of days, was Blind.

“The players respected my decision and that is it – end of story.”

While United were far from their best, Mourinho said he was pleased to have picked up a fourth win in four games in Group A.

“We have not qualified yet? Four victories and it is still not enough? We must get that point from the two remaining matches.

“I am more than happy. We changed a lot of players, we broke the natural dynamic and routines of the team and we played a kid (Scott McTominay) from the academy.

“We scored two goals, did not concede, gained three more points, more money for the club because every victory means money and did not have any significant injuries.”
