    Man in court over alleged visa fraud

    A 33- year-old businessman, Tunji Adekunle, who allegedly defrauded a woman who helped her to secure a Qatar Visa, on Wednesday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Adekunle, who resides on Sulaiman Street, Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe, told the court that Adekunle committed the offences on Oct. 1, 2010 on Abesan Estate, Ipaja.

    Ajebe said that the accused approached one Mrs Peace Udom to assist him to secure a Qatar visa

    “She charged him N650,000 which he agreed to pay.

    “After the complainant was through with the visa, the accused cunningly collected it from her without giving her a dime.

    “The accused travelled out of the country without paying for the service she rendered to him.

    “Some years later, when the complainant heard that the returned, she brought some policemen to his house to arrest him,” he said.

    The offences contravene Sections 280 and 313 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, granted the accused N700,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Komolafe adjourned the case until June 19 for mention.

     

  • Man docked for defrauding septuagenarian landlady

    A 40-year-old man, Daniel Ogundipe, who allegedly defrauded his septuagenarian landlady of N1.250 million was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused trader of 29A, Oyetoro St., Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for alleged fraud, obtaining by false pretences, stealing and causing a breach of the peace.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe, told the court that the accused committed the offences between Dec.14, 2016 and March 21 at the accused residence.

    Ajebe said that the accused introduced an MMM United Financial Scheme to his 70-year-old land lady, Mrs Clementina Edime, on the pretext of investing N1.250 million into the scheme for her.

    “The complainant, being an elderly woman and trusted the accused so much gave him N1.250 million to invest in the scheme for her.

    “Since then, the accused had failed to provide the certificate or proof of investment neither did he return the money to his landlady, “he said.

    The prosecutor said that offences contravened Sections 166(d), 278 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, entered a “not guilty ” plea.

    Chief Magistrate Alexander Komolafe granted the accused to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Komolafe adjourned the case until May 22 for mention.

  • Motorcyclist charged with stabbing NURTW official

    A 25-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Umar Saadu, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing an official of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) with a screwdriver on the head and chest.

    The accused, a resident of the Abattoir area of Oko-oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe, the accused with another man still at large stabbed the complainant, John Sanni, an official of NURTW on the head and chest with a screwdriver.

    Ajebe told the court that the incident occurred on March 7 at 10.30 a.m. at Oja-Oba Road, Abule-Egba on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    He said the NURTW official had intercepted the accused, who was riding his motorcycle with registration no. GGE 749 QD and demanded his tickets.

    “The accused who could not produce the tickets, suddenly brought out a screwdriver and stabbed the complainant on his head and chest several times, causing him grievous bodily harm.”

    The offences contravened Sections 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 provides three years for assault occasioning harm, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Further hearing was adjourned until March 27.

  • Teenager remanded over rape

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of an unemployed teenager, Useni Sanni, in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, for allegedly raping a 17- year-old girl.

    The Chief Magistrate, Alexander Komolafe, ordered the remand of the accused as he admitted committing the offence.

    Komolafe, however, granted the second accused, Ibrahim Bala, N100, 000 bail, as he pleaded not guilty.

    The magistrate, ordered Bala to produce two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

    Komolafe adjourned the case till March 27 for sentencing.

    Sanni, 19, and his accomplice, Bala, 22, residents of Abattoir area of Oko-Oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and rape.

    Earlier the prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe, told the court that the accused committed the offences at about 2: 45 a.m., on March 11 at Abattoir Cattle Market, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos.

    Ajebe said that the defendants, with two other still at large, conspired and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the complainant.

    “The accused persons armed with sticks and knife entered the victim’s shop where she usually sleeps.

    “She said that the accused threatened to kill her if she makes any effort to raise alarm for help.

    “The complainant said the accused who were on mask told her to undress and hit her on the head when she refused to cooperate,’’ the prosecutor said.

    Ajebe said that the girl alleged that Sanni forcefully had sexual intercourse with her, while others kept watch and threatened to kill her if she should shout for help.

    “ Two of the accused persons were apprehended by the police, while others fled,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 56, 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Varsity student in court for bitting off neighbour’s ear

    A 30-year-old student, Tobi Justice, who allegedly assaulted his father’s tenant by biting off his left ear, was on Thursday in Lagos released on N50, 000 bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum.

    The accused, a student of the University of Abuja, had pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge bordering on assault occasioning grievous harm and breach of peace brought against him at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    According to Prosecutor Joseph Ajebe, the accused committed the offences at his residence on Jan. 9 at about 10.40.p.m. at No. 33, Segun Aregbesola St., New Oko-Oba, a Lagos suburb.

    Ajebe alleged that the accused beat the complainant, Amadi Longinus, to a pulp and cut off his left ear with his teeth.

    “The complainant said that Justice had threatened to deal with him on several occasions.

    “Justice falsely accused the complainant of spying on him by flashing a torchlight to see his nakedness while he was bathing.

    “This led to a misunderstanding and a fight ensued between them and in the process, the accused beat Longinus to a pulp and bit off the left ear.”

    The offences contravened Sections 166 (d), 170 and 244 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    The magistrate adjourned the case to March 6 for mention.
