  • Allow private varsities to grow, says JABU

Disturbed by the problem to meet annual admission quota in private Universities, the Federal Government has been urged to stop issuing licences to new private universities until admission situation of the existing ones improved significantly.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Joseph Ayo Babalola University(JABU) Ikeji- Arakeji, Prof Theophilus Olowokure, made the appeal while briefing  reporters on the ninth convocation of the institution.

The don noted that unless fees in public universities move closer to those in private universities or phenomena increase in the average income of the population, the admission problem would remain for many years.

According to him, the situation would sentence some private universities to bankruptcy.

Olowokure said: “JABU like most of the private universities has never been able to meet her annual admission quota which was due to high fees charged in private universities and government’s continual approval of new private varsities.”

He noted that that the high fee which is necessitated by the need to cover high overhead costs has the effect of making parents of prospective students and their wards shun private universities in preference for public ones that charged relatively low fees.

Olowokure said the fact that for political expediency government cannot increase fees in the public universities, justifies the clamour by operators of private university education for Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention.

He said at JABU, the discounts of between 30 and 60 per cent on tuition were given by the management to help low income parents benefit from admission into the university.

During the convocation,608 fresh graduates of the University were conferred with various degrees across its seven colleges.

Also, two eminent Nigerians- Founder, Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation(WOTCLEF) Mrs Amina Titi Abubakar Atiku, the Chairman, GMT Energy Resources Limited and Mr Seinde Fadeni-Oladapo, both received honorary doctorate degrees of the institution
