Group seeks cancellation of new FUOYE VC’s appointment

A Civil Society Organisation, the Public Accountability Project of Nigeria (PAPN), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to cancel the recent appointment of the Vice Chancellor–designate of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Joshua Ogunwole.

The group in a statement issued by the Secretary, Mr. Kolawole Abe, alleged that the selection process that produced Prof. Ogunwole was “marred by irregularities and driven by selfish interests.”

It accused the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, and the Chairman of the FUOYE Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, of manipulating the process in favour of Prof. Ogunwole.

The body urged President Tinubu and Speaker Abbas to launch a thorough investigation into the affairs of FUOYE, its leadership and the VC selection exercise.

It claimed petitions and allegations had trailed the outgoing VC and the Council Chairman for months, noting that it would be unjust for the government to ignore claims bordering on corruption, unethical behaviour and violations of due process.

The group stressed that leadership in a federal institution must set exemplary standards, warning that FUOYE “must not be allowed to sink into a culture of corruption.”

Calling for a credible and transparent selection process, PAPN urged President Tinubu to mandate the Federal Ministry of Education led by Dr. Tunji Alausa to uphold integrity and competence above favouritism.

It warned that allowing a flawed process to stand would only encourage deeper corruption and administrative failures, noting that a VC who emerged through manipulation could compromise the quality of education and jeopardise the future of students.

“The presidency will be putting the future of our youths and the nation at risk if this appointment is allowed to stand,” the group said.
