  • Joshua has 80 per cent chance of fighting Wilder next – Hearn

ANTHONY JOSHUA has a very strong chance of fighting unbeaten American Deontay Wilder in his next fight.  That’s according to the Brit’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Joshua will put his WBA and IBF titles on the line when he faces WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker in a unification bout on March 31.

Both fighters are unbeaten but if Joshua manages to get past the tough Kiwi, Hearn has tipped Wilder to his (Joshua) next up.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, he said: “Our job is to give the public what they want, that’s how you keep boxing strong.

“Anthony wants to do that, he wants to fight Deontay Wilder now – straight away. There is a very strong chance he will be next after Parker, an 80 per cent chance.”

Wilder came close to losing in his last fight against Luis Ortiz but managed to pull through a tricky seventh round to win. And, as Hearn pointed out, Joshua has to beat Parker before any talk of a bout with the WBC champion can happen.

“I think there’s a very good chance it could happen next, but we have to see on March 31,” he added.

But, according to bookmakers Betfair, Joshua needn’t worry when taking on Parker. They see him as heavy favourite, pricing him up at 1/10 to win.

    KING JOSHUA RULES AGAIN

•Stops brave Takam in 10th round

    •Retains Boxing World titles

    •Joshua praises opponent

    •Takam wants a rematch

ANTHONY JOSHUA stopped a resilient Carlos Takam in the 10th round to successfully defend his IBF and WBA heavyweight world titles in Cardiff.

The Briton made it 20 victories from as many bouts in front of an estimated 78,000 at the Principality Stadium.

Joshua’s nose was cut in the second by the head of Takam, 36, who replaced Kubrat Pulev 12 days before the bout.

Joshua, 28, then cut Takam’s eye in the fourth, but it took until round 10 for the Cameroon-born boxer to be stopped.

Joshua has now cemented his status as the best pound for pound heavyweight boxer on the planet after overpowering a resilient and determined Carlos Takam in front of a brimming Principality Stadium.

Eager to prove the bookmakers wrong who had stacks the odds so heavily against him, Takam started out determined to make a go of the showdown, digging in early on and catching Joshua with a clash of heads. Joshua talking in the ring, he said: “First and foremost, Cardiff thank you for coming out this evening.

“Takam, it was a pleasure. I come to fight, I don’t sit on the edge and make decisions. it was a good fight until the ref stopped it, so I have the utmost respect for Takam.

“I have no interest in what is going on with the officials, that’s not my job. I think people want to see Takam unconscious on the floor, and that’s what I was trying to get to.” Joshua’s gallant challenger Carlos Takam, who is asked whether the referee was right to stop the fight, replied: “No, I don’t think so.

“I don’t know why the referee stopped the match. I respect the champion and the UK fans, they are great fans and I am happy to box here. I don’t know why they stopped it.

“I want a rematch, I make my preparations with 12 days to fight Anthony. I want a rematch, I want to box him again, I want him, he is a great champion.”

After a brief short-out prior to the ring walk the power was back on in the area. Thankfully Joshua was with it as the first bell sounded. He bounded across the ring, perhaps open to stifle the expected early charge. AJ towered over the 6ft 1in Takam, who crouched even lower as if to minimise Joshua’s target further. He hardly threw a punch in the first, though, which Joshua took without landing many of his own.

Joshua, warned by trainer Rob McCracken that Takam possessed knock out power, was taking few risks at the start. But it was the challenger’s head rather his punches which inflicted he first facial damage of the night. Joshua reared away from the impact, which gave him a bloody nose, but then opened up in retaliation.

  • Boxing champion, Joshua set to tour Nigeria in August

Boxing champion, Joshua set to tour Nigeria in August

WORLD Boxing heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua is set to visit Nigeria on a three-day tour in August, 2017.

During the visit, he would pay courtesy calls on Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja and the Governors of Lagos and Ogun States.

He would also visit some royal fathers including the Ooni of Ife, the Awujale of Ijebu and the Oba of Lagos and attend a charity boxing match, Inspire Nigeria, 2017 at the Eko Hotel and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja where he would take questions from the audience.

The organiser of the three-day tour and Director of Peel Aston Global, Khomeini Bukhari, said in a statement on Wednesday that arrangements had been concluded for the homecoming for the boxing champion.

Bukhari explained that the Inspire Nigeria, 2017 is a platform for Joshua to encourage Nigerian youths that their dreams and aspirations are achievable and that there is hope for them.

He said, “This event is part of his (Joshua’s) social corporate responsibility and duty to give back to Nigeria where he is the son of the soil. Part of the tour will be to visit the Presidency, some state governors as well as pay his respects to the royal fathers.

“I have secured the endorsement and support of several notable people in Nigeria and am very positive that this event will be by far the biggest event in Nigeria in a very long time.”

The businessman stated that Joshua had really made Nigeria proud; describing him as a true role model, hope for the youths, and a fine example of a good sports man.

“We are working very hard on his trip as he is the best sports personality right now as far as I am concerned and thus deserves the best home-coming reception,” he added.

On reports that Joshua’s next fight may hold in Nigeria, Bukhari said it was up to the boxer’s promoter, Eddie Hearn to make the decision.

  • Build schools for rural dwellers, Joshua urges NGOs

Build schools for rural dwellers, Joshua urges NGOs

General Overseer, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet Temitope Balogun. Joshua, has urged governments and humanitarian bodies all over the world to always focus attention on the plight of people living in remote areas rather than the cities.

The cleric addressed reporters at the Synagogue premises on Sunday after returning from Ecuador where the Emmanuel TV, of which he is the Executive Producer, inaugurated a basic and secondary school in the country’s Esmmeraldas Province last week.

He said SCOAN has finalised plans to establish four basic and secondary schools in each continent to consolidate on its humanitarian gesture. However, the schools would be located in the hinterlands, where residents of such places are often abandoned by governments and their wards denied quality and affordable education, the cleric added.

Going down memory lane, the televangelist recalled that following the earthquake that shook Esmmeraldas Province in Ecuador in April, last year, killing over 500 and leaving many wounded and homeless, he received a vision from God to send relief materials to victims. He added that later God instructed him to commit more lasting legacy for the communities in the Esmmmeraldas Province, noting that it was at that point the idea of a school struck him.

According to him, his journey from Ecuador capital to Esmmeraldas Province for the inauguration of the project was hectic.

“It was about a four hours journey from the main town; but more difficult was the terrain. The ground was naturally marshy and it was raining heavily. My aides and I had to mount the back of a pick up van.  At a point, we had to use a raincoat to cover ourselves because of the intensity of the rain. At a pint, the vehicle sank deep into the ground, but eventually, we all made it to our destination by trekking through.”

Further, he challenged Africa to henceforth stop seeing herself as always begging for alms, particularly from the West, saying this is what has set the continent back for ages.

“For many years, Africa has enjoyed scholarships, grants and fellowships from the West. But I’m of the belief that we must reverse this trend by giving back to the West.

“In this part of the world, we have always complained of hunger, poverty and homelessness; but my experience has made me to realise that even developed countries suffer same fate. I have travelled wide and have seen people even in developed societies sleeping under the bridges and begging for food.

“I have since realised that in line with the words of God, you can only be greater when you learn to give. When we started this ministry, we had nothing; yet whenever I had the opportunity to travel out, I kept on giving, but see where we are now?

“On our own part, we have chosen to donate even to the West. We have decided to build four primary and secondary schools in each continent but they would be in rural areas where the poor can access quality education.

“We have also realised that even in developed societies, equal attention is not given to rural dwellers. It’s only schools in the capital that look beautiful, while those in remote communities are abandoned. This is the new task God has given to us and we have also hit the ground running.

“We are in talks with the government of Ecuador to make the road accessible and motorable for pupils. We will also continue to maintain facilities in the school. In the near future, we are considering offering scholarships to some of the best students in the school to study in some of the best universities in the world.

He said his greatest joy in Esmmeraldas was seeing smiles on the faces of the innocent children, their teachers and parents all of who now see a renewed hope of education for their wards.

  • What is Joshua fleeing from?

So, Prophet T.B. Joshua is planning to relocate to Israel. According to a report, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos, “told his followers that while in the Holy Land, he held meetings with Mayors of Jerusalem, Tiberias and the Jordan Valley. He said that the Mayors offered land and facilities in an area around the biblical site of the Sea of Galilee for him to organise meetings for international pilgrims.”

It is laughable that the Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Dr. Frederick Fasehun, thrust himself into the picture by asking the Federal Government to ensure that Joshua did not relocate. A May 14 report said: “Fasehun told reporters in Lagos that all well-meaning Nigerians must intervene to change the relocation plan.”

Hear Fasehun’s argument:  ‘’Thanks to Pastor Joshua, Ikotun has become a verifiable tourism hotspot for local and foreign worshipers, who flock the synagogue for verifiable healing, deliverance, miracles and prosperity. Nigeria stands to lose positive dividends currently bestowed by SCOAN on not just Ikotun, Lagos, but also on the entire country.’’

Fasehun observed that the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) acknowledged that the church hosted six of every 10 foreigners. He added:  ”We shall be losing the economic benefits and potential of religious tourism, a sector in which SCOAN commands about 2 million local and international tourists annually.” He argued that “Local businesses and hotels directly established to service patrons of this ministry will close shop.” In addition, “Nigeria, according to Fasheun, will also lose Joshua and SCOAN’s donations, charities and philanthropies worth not less than N8billion in scholarships, disaster reliefs, house rent support, sports and sportsmen sponsorship and others.”

It is interesting that a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, also thrust himself into the frame, saying that Joshua must not be allowed to relocate to Israel. Fani Kayode tweeted:  ”We will not allow T.B. Joshua to leave Nigeria and relocate to Israel. He is one of God’s end-time generals. We need him now more than ever.”

The tragic incident at SCOAN on September 12, 2014, is still fresh in the minds of many members of the public. At least 115 people reportedly died, 84 of them South Africans, when a guesthouse being redeveloped by the church collapsed. A government probe linked the tragedy with professional negligence and the church’s failure to act in accordance with regulations.

Curiously, Fasehun was quoted as saying that the government must immediately stop Joshua’s “ongoing judicial persecution.” Could this be a reference to the disaster and legal punishment of those found blameworthy?  When did sanction for illegality become persecution?

Those who are anxious to stop Joshua from relocating should not make it look like he is a victim. That is simply nonsensical.

  • Joshua ready to drop IBF title for Klitschko rematch

Joshua ready to drop IBF title for Klitschko rematch

Anthony Joshua could be stripped of one of his newly-won belts before his next fight, because of a rematch clause with Wladimir Klitschko.

Joshua added IBO and WBA Super World Heavyweight belts to the IBF belt that he already held by knocking out the Ukrainian last week.

But now he could have to give up the IBF title, just as Tyson Fury did after defeating Klitschko, because the federation has a mandatory challenger who he must fight next.

Fury was also stripped of the IBF belt, because he, like Joshua, had agreed to a rematch with Klitschko.

And Joshua would be happy to do the same, with a rematch prioritised over a bout with mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, according to promoter, and Sportsmail columnist, Eddie Hearn.

‘Talks with the IBF and Pulev’s promoter Team Sauerland are ongoing,’ Hearn told the Sun.

‘By the weekend we should have some clarity but it is very complicated.

‘We don’t want to drop the IBF belt but if we have to we’ll have no problem doing exactly that.

‘We won’t let boxing politics get in the way of AJ’s progression.

Ideally, we want all the belts but when you get close, it becomes difficult because of situations like this.

‘This is not going away, the IBF always follow their rules just as they did with Fury.

‘We could look to do a deal with Pulev and try to make an interim bout for the belt — with the winner of that to face AJ.’

  • Joshua promises victory in ‘gold medal match’ against Klitschko

Joshua promises victory in ‘gold medal match’ against Klitschko

Anthony Joshua promised victory in his “gold medal fight” against two-time world champion Wladimir Klitschko when the pair hit New York to promote their Wembley showdown.
IBF heavyweight champion Joshua takes on Ukrainian Klitschko in London on April 29 and said he was ready for the next big step in his career when making his first appearance in front of the American media.
The pair appeared together at Madison Square Garden and in Times Square recently, where Joshua’s message remained the same before their showdown at Wembley in front of an expected record-breaking crowd of 90,000.
“I know I’m going to be facing the best Wladimir,” Joshua, 27, told Sky Sports. “I think the time is right. It may seem soon to people. This is my gold medal fight once again. I’m here for a reason. I’ll handle business the way I’ve always handled it. The goal is the same – to be victorious.”
Joshua won super heavyweight Olympic gold at London 2012 before winning all 18 of his professional fights by knockout. Klitschko, who will be 41 when he bids to reclaim a world crown, has not fought since he was beaten by Tyson Fury in November 2015.
“Good day New York, I’m still around!” he said. “This fight is the biggest stage I have ever fought. I think it’s the perfect time for both of us. In three years he’ll be too good and I’ll be too old. It’s a signature fight for boxing. I am obsessed with my goal to become three-time world champion.”
The fight is expected to attract the largest British boxing crowd for nearly 80 years. The bout is expected to attract a crowd of around 90,000 after promoters struck an agreement with Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, to lift a capacity cap.
Crowds for major sporting events at Wembley are typically limited to 80,000 in order for London’s transport network to run efficiently.
However, following consultations between the Mayor’s office, Network Rail, Transport for London and Wembley’s operators, Joshua and Klitschko’s hotly-anticipated contest is likely to match the record attendance for a fight on British soil.
“Sadiq urged me to bring the biggest fights to the city and I’m delighted to have the biggest fight in British boxing history at Wembley,” Eddie Hearn told BBC Sport.
Khan said: “I can’t wait to see the fight of the year here in London and it’s fantastic that a post-war record crowd will get to watch it at a world-class venue like Wembley. I’m delighted Transport for London and Network Rail have pulled out all the stops to make this happen so we can move 90,000 people around the capital quickly and safely.”
The current record crowd for a British fight is also 90,000, set by Len Harvey and Jock McAvoy’s bout at London’s White City in 1939.

  • Joshua: Same old story

Repetition is a powerful weapon in the hands of a spin doctor, and a body known as the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC) is using it for the purpose of laundering the image of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos. Of course, the effort to show that the church is not as black as it has been painted is also an effort to paint its leader, Prophet Temitope Joshua, as an innocent player in the tragic drama in the church’s compound in September last year. According to official figures, 80 South Africans, 22 Nigerians, two Beninoise and two Togolese died following a building collapse at the church.

Based on a Coroner’s inquest into the disaster, the Lagos State government indicated that it would take legal action against the church and certain individuals. Specifically, a statement by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s spokesman, Habib Haruna, said the government “would prosecute the contractor, Akinbela Fatiregun, of Hardrock Engineering Company Limited, and Structural Engineer, Oladele Ogundeji, who built and supervised the collapsed building, for professional negligence.”

In addition, the government said it would prosecute the church for failing to obtain a building approval, contrary to the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2010. Reports said the collapsed building was originally a three-storey structure, which was being raised to accommodate three additional floors.

Nothing about the position of the state government is mystifying. But NHRC, self-described as “a coalition of 135 civil society groups spread across Nigeria”, introduced mystification when it said in a statement: “We use this medium to call on the United Nations (UN Human Rights Commission) to compel the Nigerian government to ensure full investigation into the matter so as to establish what was the cause of the collapsed building beyond the claims that the building fell on its own.”

Carrying the confusion further, NHRC said it “believes that there are new evidences that link the collapse of the building to terrorism”. According to the body, “Islamic extremists may have attacked the building due to Nigeria’ s war against Boko Haram, which found a new wave of support from South Africa.”

It is curious that NHRC repeated the same old story that Joshua told a disbelieving public when the tragedy happened. At the time, Joshua claimed that a “strange aircraft” flew over the church a number of times before the guest house collapsed. He also mentioned that an email he received showed that his church was targeted for bombing by the Islamist guerilla force Boko Haram. Joshua seemed fixated on the idea that the building must have collapsed as a result of an outside machination by those who do not wish him and his church well.

It is clear enough that Joshua’s presentation and the NHRC’s repetition cannot invalidate the points that support culpability, namely, identified professional negligence and failure to act in accordance with regulations. In this case, repetition has served no constructive purpose. The repetition of this particular angle sounds like a fictional construction; it is farcical.

  • The ‘evil one’ did it, says Joshua as congregation views video

The ‘evil one’ did it, says Joshua as congregation views video

Despite Friday’s calamity at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), service were held yesterday. Prophet Temitope Joshua’s sermon was, however, unusual. He attributed the incident to the work of “the evil one”.

Prophet Joshua had earlier said an aircraft flew over the building just before it collapsed.  A CCTV footage showing the “strange aircraft” overflying the building four times before it collapsed was shown to the congregation.

In the security camera footage, apparently from opposite the vast church compound,  an aircraft is seen over the building four times at 11:30 am (1030 GMT), 11:43 am, 11:45 and 11:54 am.

The uncompleted building, five floors of which are visible above a high wall, is then seen to collapse at 12:44 pm, throwing up huge clouds of dust into the air.

“After the incident, the “strange aircraft” does not return,” a commentary accompanying the images adds.

There was no independent verification of the authenticity of the footage but Joshua said he would make it available to Nigeria’s security agencies.

Managing Director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency  (NAMA) Mr. Ibrahim Abdulsalam said the matter is being investigated. He said Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka had not directed him to comment on the matter. He said details would emerge shortly.

Joshua brought out a white sheet of paper which had an email sent by a convert who he said was a Boko Haram member.

“I did not bring this out before now because I did not want people with little faith to be scared and stop coming to church.

“Even my wife did not know of the existence of this mail. Only the people at the email department and myself knew of it and I told them not to disclose it to anyone.”

He said the picture on the mail is that of a man from Kogi State, residing in Jos with his soldier parent.

“He was a Boko Haram member as you have heard them read it, who came to SCOAN to plant a bomb but could not do it because of our God and got converted and went back to Jos with the explosives.

“I am showing members for them to know the God they serve. If I had shown it in the past, faithless people may not want to come to church again.

“We have to believe what happened so that our people can learn and be educated to be on alert at all times,” Joshua said, adding:

“Boko Haram will not stop here. I have said it before. It won’t stop here but our God will get back at them such that they will know it is because of what they have done in this church.

“Maybe, this one will be the end of the whole thing. I have remained silent because I have to. My life has been like that. People will lie from the beginning and later realise the truth. It is my life and I accept it. It is a good life”.

Prophet Joshua saluted the “heroes and God’s generals. It is a security matter and so, I have to allow the security people to do their job,” he said.

Immediately Fashola got to the scene, he queried the presence of church members ordering security personnel to send them out in order for rescue agencies to do their jobs.

“What are they doing here? This is now a national disaster. Cordon off this area and let anyone who is not a rescue operative be sent out so that professionals can do their jobs.

“Anyone obstructing the duties of emergency agencies should be arrested.”

To Prophet Joshua who arrived while the governor was issuing the arrest order, Fashola said: “We understand that this is an unfortunate situation but we need your men to understand that it is an emergency situation.

“Let them allow those who are trained to do their jobs. We cannot carry out emergency and rescue operations in this situation.”

While walking with the Prophet to his office for a meeting, the governor, who observed that construction was ongoing in the main building of the church, queried the leýgality of the action.
