Jubilation as Akeredolu pays Ondo workers’ March salaries

It was jubilation galore yesterday in Ondo State as civil servants received their March salaries.

The state governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN,  has by this gesture kept the promise that his administration would not owe salaries.

His predecessor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, owed the workers seven months salaries before he left office.

The Nation observed an usual queue of  the workers at various Automated Teller Machines (ATM) after they  received the alerts on their phones.

A staff at Ministry of Environment, Mr. Bode Ojajuni, who spoke with our reporter commended the governor for keeping to his promise.

According to him, “we are happy because we are no longer in the era of waiting for months without salaries.

“At least I can now act like a father and husband at home. We have been sustaining ourselves at home with the little gains we make from the petty business of my wife.”

Another workers, Mrs Funmi Bambi, urged Akeredolu to clear the seven months owed by Mimiko..

She said “some of us cannot go to the bank to cash our money because our monthly salaries are being used to service out loans.

“If our governor can clear all the seven months or three months, we will be able to smile home,” she said.

Aside from the salary, the governor, also, yesterday ordered the immediate rehabilitation of all roads in the three senatorial districts of the state.

The governor mobilized engineers, technicians and other relevant officials of the Ondo State Agency For Road Maintenance and Construction (OSARMCO) to the areas where the massive Road Revolution Programme had kicked off.

A statement by OSARMCO spokesman ,Wale Omosebi, said major towns in the three senatorial districts were being affected as work has commenced on the internal and access roads in the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) in Okitipupa in the southern part of the state.

It said walkways were already being cast with kerbs just as the components of the car park are being put in place.

The statement said Akeredolu has assured that his administration would take urgent steps to put in place structures and processes that would make the dream on the academic institution a reality.

It said: “In the Central Senatorial District, reconstruction of the road linking Ilara-Mokin with Ikota  in Ifedore Local Government Area is in progress to ensure that the project is delivered in  time.

“The road, when eventually completed to Ikota will enable road users from Ilesa and Ibadan attempting to link Orita-Obele area of the state capital and Ijare as well as other neighbouring towns to avoid the FUTA area thereby reducing traffic challenges in the area.”

OSARMCO Chairman, Engr Kehinde Osikoya, said the first phase of Ilara-Mokin-Ikota road would be completed soon while the second phase is expected to follow in due course.

  • Jubilation in Ebute-Meta as ‘Terror’ dies in custody

Jubilation in Ebute-Meta as ‘Terror’ dies in custody

A man’ suspected to be a hoodlum died yesterday in police custody, sparking jubilation among some residents of Ebute-Meta, Lagos Mainland.

Sunday Terror was arrested by the police around 11.20am on Ondo Street, following a tip-off.

He had been on the police wanted list for over seven months. He escaped each time the police got close to getting him.

Residents, who discovered his hideout, tipped off security operatives and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Denton, Olarenwaju Quadri led a special squad to fish him out.

On sighting the police, Terror, said to be with his gang members identified as Dagbe, Omosoku and Oshankele, were said to have opened fire.

The police returned fire; Terror was caught, but the others escaped with gunshot wounds through the waterside.

When the news of Terror’s arrest was broken, people rushed to Denton Police Station, demanding that he should not be released.

He was said to have died around 1pm.

It was learnt that the crowd, which blocked the express road, included market women and traditional rulers. They cursed the suspect and reportedly asked that he should not be taken to a hospital.

Some eyewitnesses at the police station claimed that the suspect confessed before he died.

One said: “He has made life difficult for a lot of people here. So many people are afraid of Terror and his gang. People celebrated his arrest and his death because if he was taken to hospital, his godfathers, who are politicians, would have found a way to free him.

“He confessed here that he was behind the death of four people at Evans Square in December. His gang killed four people and injured over 20. He also confessed that he was the one who beheaded one member of the Black Axe cult, as well as killed two people in Idumota.

“He also told the police that Oshankele, his gang member who lives in Mushin was the one who keeps their weapons. Terror also said his gang members have killed many policemen and collected their rifles.”

“Yes people are happy and I am also happy. We have been living in fear in Ebute-Meta because of Terror and his gang of criminals. They have done so many bad things. People even fear him in death. I wish the police will arrest members of his gang so that we can have peace,” the witness added.

A security source told The Nation that Terror raped the daughters of some Baale (community heads) in the area.

According to the source, six Baales visited the DPO to thank him for apprehending the suspect.

“People helped us in arresting him. He ran into one house and when his colleagues saw us, they opened fire. When they saw that he would not make it, they shot him so that he won’t confess.

“But we were able to get him to talk before he died. He confessed that they usually engaged in Bank and ATM robbery in Ebute-Meta.  That they usually operated on motorcycles and they killed any stubborn victim. He also said they usually terrorised sawmill operators and extorted money from them as well as traders.

“The residents wrote several petitions to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations about Terror’s activities.

“He also confessed that some of his colleagues live at Ijora Badia and Lagos Island. He said they usually attacked people going for morning prayers by laying ambush by their homes and forcing them to part with their valuables.

“He also confessed that he raped many girls, including daughters of Baale, at gun point in their homes.

“He was begging us to give him water but we did not because that would have killed him instantly. He bled and died around 1pm.

“You needed to see the crowd that gathered here. They blocked everywhere, insisting that the police should let him die. They were shouting that he should not be taken to the hospital, that they were tired of his terror,” said the source.

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), confirmed Terror’s death, adding that a locally-made pistol and an axe were recovered from him.

She said a manhunt has begun for the fleeing suspects.

  • Jubilation as APC launches ‘Operation clean Bayelsa’

Jubilation as APC launches ‘Operation clean Bayelsa’

On Tuesday, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rolled out trucks and caterpillarss to clear heaps of garbage dotting different dump sites in the city. Hundreds of APC members rolled their sleeves and went to various stinking dump sites which were overfilled with garbage.

Adorned in T-shirts with an inscription, “Sylva cleans Bayelsa”, the party faithful who carried shovels, basins and other cleaning tools sang and danced as they helped to evacuate the rubbish. The gesture attracted admirations from residents who hailed the determination of party members to tackle intractable problems of environmental pollution in the capital city.

Why residents jubilated and endured traffic gridlocks as the sanitation exercise lasted is not far-fetched. The state capital has been characterised by poor hygiene. It has become a horrendous task for the government to clear refuse from dump sites. Most times, the garbage sites which are located along the roads and close to markets and schools are mountainous.

Such sites emit offensive odour and raise fears of possible outbreak of epidemics. It is as if the government was overwhelmed. Most times the refuse overflow into the roads and cause traffic gridlock. Even after evacuation, in few days, the garbage resurfaces. The government once blamed its inability to constantly clear them on paucity of funds.

Therefore, when residents woke to see heaps of garbage being cleared by the members of APC, they were happy that the opposition closed ranks with the government to come to their rescue.

As expected, the Bayelsa State government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state regarded the cleaning of Yenagoa, the state capital by the APC as mere political action.

But most residents of Yenagoa considered the decision of the APC and its governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva to clean the capital city as a humanitarian gesture. Most of them did not give political interpretations to the action.

They discovered that the government-controlled sanitation authority also mobilised to clear other garbage dumps. At the end, the city of Yenagoa was the major beneficiary. It became cleaner than it had ever been in a long while.

The APC cleaners paid more attention to mountains of garbage located along the roads, close to schools and markets.

The Director, Media and Publicity, Sylva/Igir Campaign Organisation (SICO), Chief Nathan Egba who led the exercise, said the campaign outfit and leadership of the APC initiated the cleaning exercise to avert outbreak of epidemics in the state.

He said the government was no longer able to manage the environmental situation in the state, especially in Yenagoa.

“Epidemics, diseases and other health hazards are likely to break out. Garbage is piled up in front of schools, markets and even in front of the Deputy Governor’s facility. We intend to help the Deputy Governor to pack the rubbish.

“The idea is to help the government clean up the place and ensure that our people are able to live in a disease and epidemic-free environment,” he said. He maintained that many communities had cried out to SICO for help in evacuating mountains of garbage in their areas.

He said: “Our focus at the moment is Yenagoa because the situation in the capital city is largely an emergency. Practically, everywhere garbage dump in the city is overfilled with trash and we need to clear them because it is obvious that Dickson’s administration has abandoned governance.

“They are focused on how to win an election which we all know they cannot win. As a party coming into power, we don’t need to wait. We believe that we should be doing this kind of thing until the election and the day of swearing in.

“We will continue to do it as long as Dickson’s people are not able to do it. It is Bayelsa people we are working for.”

Egba faulted claims by the government that it could not regularly clear the waste because of paucity of funds, saying the government misapplied revenue accruing to it.

He said if judiciously applied, revenues accruing to the state were enough to take care of every aspect of the state’s economy. He wondered what the government was doing with all the sanitation levies paid to it by all business ventures in the state.

“All funds have been misapplied and everything is channelled into politics and election alone. Everything has broken down. But an APC administration will ensure good governance and proper application of funds. When Sylva was a governor, these things were never a problem,” he said.

Speaking in the same manner, the SICO’s Woman Leader, Mrs. Vivian Ere Imananagha, explain that the exercise was informed by a directive from Sylva.

She said: “When Sylva came on tour of the city, he saw that there was so much hold-up and wondered what was causing it. He got to the point where it started and found out it was caused by mountainous garbage.

“He asked the women and youths of APC to assist in cleaning the state. People are sitting by the rubbish to sell and buy foodstuffs. Diseases that follow the trash are numerous. APC is the party that will clean Bayelsa.”

Also, SICO’s Director, Mobilisation, Dr. Selekaye Victor-Ben, said APC was on a rescue mission.

“We are out on the streets of Bayelsa on a rescue mission. We came out to answer the cry of the people of the state on the rising concern over the sanitary conditions in the state.

“The poor sanitary condition and the failure of Dickson administration to tackle it is indication that the people of the state have lost confidence in him. It shows that the emergence of Dickson was a mistake that should be corrected come December 5,” he said.

But the government only saw the gesture as bad campaign strategy. The Director of Publicity, Dickson’s campaign organisation, Mr. Jonathan Obuabite, described the APC’s action as “a deceitful style of campaign” and asked the party to look for other sane and more dignifying means of campaign.

He advised Bayelsans and other residents of the state to be wary of the antics of members of the APC “who are desperate to grab power through the back door by advancing various dubious means.”

He said: “This has now confirmed to everyone the earlier assertion that it is indeed the so-called change party that is responsible for the heap of refuse around the state, particularly in Yenagoa, the state capital.

“They decided to carry out the show of shame on a day that is usually set aside by the state sanitation authority for evacuation.

“We advise the APC and its embattled candidate, Timipre Sylva to look for other sane and more dignifying means of campaign as this latest style would not secure for him the votes required to be elected.”

Obuabite added that Dickson was fully committed to governance and ensuring a cleaner and healthy environment for all.

  • Jubilation in Ekiti over Fayemi’s nomination

Jubilation in Ekiti over Fayemi’s nomination

There was jubilation in Ekiti State yesterday, following the announcement of former Governor Kayode Fayemi as a ministerial nominee.

Some residents of Ado Ekiti and All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and civil servants stayed glued to their television sets to monitor the reading of the letter conveying the list by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

APC members milled around the party secretariat in Ado-Ekiti singing, dancing and congratulating one another on the nomination of the ex-governor, which they believed would benefit the party and the state.

Some eminent citizens have been congratulating Fayemi on his nomination, urging him to use his position to add value to governance in Nigeria.

State Chairman Olajide Awe urged Fayemi to strengthen the template for modern governance anchored on human development to contribute his quota to national development.

From the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti, Rev Felix Ajakaye, came an advice to Fayemi to use his God-given gifts and talents to “concretely and meaningfully” make a positive impact in the service of the nation.

The cleric enjoined the former governor “to continue to serve God and humanity with humility and to keep using your God-given talents for the common good”.

The monarch of Fayemi’s hometown, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti, Oba Sunday Owolabi Ajiboye, described his subject’s nomination as the “beginning of greater heights in life which affords him another opportunity to advance the course of governance”.

The monarch said: “This is a new beginning of greater heights in your life, which we believe you will exploit to advance the course of representative governance anchored on human development, which you championed over the years in your journey to political governance.”

For former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director, Samuel Bandele Falegan, Fayemi’s nomination presented “the second time within five years that my joy is full to the brim”.

The elder statesman said he was convinced that Fayemi’s nomination was a reward by God for dedication to selfless service to humanity and loyalty to his party, even as he said the legacy projects by the former governor had sold him beyond Ekiti frontiers.

The Alare of Are-Ekiti, Oba Boluwade Adebiyi, described Fayemi as “a politician of no mean stature, a complete gentleman, a child of destiny” and asked him to maintain the attributes in the service of the nation.

The Olupole of Ipole-Iloro, Oba Ezekiel Babatola Oladele, said: “God never closes a window without opening a door and God does not take anything from us without giving another.”

He urged Fayemi to dedicate his life to God in the service to humanity.

President, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Ekiti State Branch, Yakubu Sanni, said Fayemi’s legacy projects would remain unparalleled.

Sanni praised him for promoting Islam through the approval of hijab for female pupils and appointing Muslims into top positions of government.

Members of the Association of Traders and Market Leaders of Nigeria said they were happy that Fayemi as a proud son of Ekiti State “has never put us to shame”.

In his words, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, said Fayemi’s nomination was an attestation to his record of excellence.

  • 250 Ebola volunteers return amidst jubilation

Two hundred and fifty Nigerian volunteers against Ebola returned into the country yesterday after successfully helping to halt the spread of the deadly virus in some West African countries.

The volunteers were honoured with a commemorative plate by the Liberian government, bearing the inscription: “The Love of Liberty”. President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to receive the volunteers, who were deployed to the West Africa sub-region on December 3, 2014.

The volunteers, who worked in Liberia and Sierra Leone, arrived in Abuja yesterday morning.

They were sent to the West African countries after containing the deadly virus brought into Nigeria by a Liberian Patrick Sawyer.

The volunteers were said to be in perfect conditions and free of the ailment.

A chartered Ethiopia airplane that conveyed the returnees landed at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport at about 2.38am yesterday morning.

The flight was delayed for about three hours in Freetown.

They were later driven to a hotel in Central Abuja after security checks and screening at the airport.

One of the officials told reporters that the volunteers did not contact any infection; adding: “They spent between 26 to 42 days under inspection as their stint ended, before their journey back to Nigeria. But they would still be put under scrutiny watch.
