  • Rappers must be versatile, says M.I

Mr Jude Abaga, popularly known as `M.I.’ has advised other rappers to be more versatile so as to remain relevant in the society and not be overtaken by the hip-hop revolution across the world.

M.I told our reporters in Lagos that rappers need to create music that would be suitable to the audience and still maintain their originality.

“Rappers need to be hard working because one of the issues confronting the genre is that rappers do not do researches that can make them and their works stand out among their contemporaries.

“We must understand our audience because they evolve with each passing time.  We must learn to always come up with something that will be pleasing to their ears.

“Musicians, especially, rappers in Nigeria must be flexible and show versatility in their outputs so as to maintain relevance because engaging in rap-music in this part of the world is tough, “he said.

He said that rappers would be able to address all the issues he had listed above by involving in research findings and getting field backs from their fans on what they wanted to listen to.

M.I who is also the head of Chocolate City Record Label, said that most recording labels had their various challenges and shortcomings.“Most labels, if not all, have their various shortcomings in fulfilling their obligations to the artistes that signed them on,’’ he said.

He appealed to artistes, especially the up-and-coming ones, to always learn to be patient with recording labels.

“Artistes must know that there will always be ups-and- down in their relationships with their labels, and both parties must work together to put things right.

“Many artistes want to be successful at once but they must realise that there are different strokes for different folks.

“So, we must learn how to wait for the right time,” he said.

He urged the media to focus more on the positives and spread love.

He said that negative news items would always attract more audience but they would always do more damage for the society.

  • Why I don’t hang out with POLITICIANS–MI ABAGA

Why I don’t hang out with POLITICIANS–MI ABAGA

If the rap genre was a boxing ring, then, Jude Abaga, aka MI, would probably be the undisputed champion in Nigeria. So far, he has two albums to his credit and two mix tapes titled Illegal Music 1 & 2. But even as he keeps making waves in the music industry, MI insists that he is passionate about discovering and nurturing younger talents. OVWE MEDEME recently caught up with him at the Lagos office of Beat FM, where he talked about his next album, politics and other issues.

WHAT should we expect from your forthcoming album?

My album titled The Chairman will be released on October 30. I have decided about it; it has been a long time coming.

You have been talking about releasing the album since last year; so, what is really responsible for the delay?

I’ve been apologising to my fans everywhere I go. It took a long time to record. I wanted a certain standard and it took a long time for me to attain that. Also, there are some factors that have caused the delay.

For instance, last year, I was very busy. I tried to record, but I was a judge on the GloX Factor competition; I was also working on all the ambassadorships I was a part of last year and I was touring and travelling for shows too. I was very busy last year, so I wasn’t able to do much about the album. So, this year, I just took time off to work on it. If you noticed, I haven’t been anywhere this year; I have been hiding.

In terms of style, your last two albums were quite different from each other. What are  you promising your fans in this one?

At the end of the day, when I go to the studio, I don’t plan that I am going to do a different album. I just go in, open my heart and then whatever comes out, I accept it. What happens is, after you are done recording several songs, you just pick the ones you like most. That is what I’ve done with this album; so, I expect it to come out differently. It is really an album that is meant to inspire young people out there, telling them that no matter what their dream is, value should be added to it. If you believe in it and work hard, you will achieve anything.

What did you visit Beat FM today?

I just came in because I am a friend of the house. They just called me to come and help them, as they give out a plot of land to an amazing young man; so, I came to support him. I think it is a nice initiative. They stand by their words and that is commendable.

What is the situation of things in Chocolate City at the moment, against the backdrop of the recent crisis that rocked the outfit?

Chocolate City is standing on the shoulders of an incredible leader, Audu Makori, who is the CEO. He is a great guy and has been working so hard this year. In fact, he is involved with government and the Law. He is an activist and is doing so many things. So, the way it is, Chocolate City is founded on a great partnership and good brotherhood. Though some of our brothers have left to thread new paths, we still have Ice Prince, MI and a host of other artistes there too. There is still a lot of friendship that holds Chocolate City together.

How hard hit was the label when Jesse Jags and Brymo walked out?

I think when Jesse left, it was a different relationship than when Brymo left. Generally, the whole affair was very messy, but we had it easier than a lot of other people, if you look at Mohits and the other labels that had issues. It is a very tough and competitive industry. It is easy for people to write and talk about it, but it is very painful when you are inside. We just wish everybody well in this industry.

Does the split have anything to do with the delay in your album release?

Actually, it did, but it is only about the recording and not any other thing. When you are used to recording with people and you don’t have the opportunity to record with them as much, things change.

At some point, I wanted to record by myself, but along the way, I discovered that I needed people to help me. But Jesse and Ice Prince are so busy now. All the producers we came up with are all big stars now, so I had to look elsewhere. Another thing is, I like to bring younger artistes up. That is always a thing I like to do. Discovering those people has its own way of taking up time.

How far have you gone with that?

That is MI consistently. I’m always trying to look for the young talents and bring them up. I have been involved in so many people’s careers and I think it is a blessing from God to provide me with the opportunity to do what I do. I also believe that if you bless people, God blesses you back. That will never stop for me. I will never stop helping young talents.

Are you looking at releasing Illegal Music 3?

I am toying with the idea. I think that maybe I should move on and do something else. There is always going to be something else to do. My albums are made for the general market. For Nigeria, I don’t really go hard. So, I think there is always something hard core that I will do for the real fans. I don’t know if it will be called Illegal Music 3, but if it is, it will be the last one.

Another general election is around the corner; so, what will you be doing?

First of all, I already started sending out my own messages for the elections and that is the King James campaign. I’m not talking about the song. I have the pictures online. I tell people not to just vote. Ask yourself what kind of leaders you want so that when they talk to you, you are prepared. The youths of this country form about 60% of the population. We make the decision; nobody else does.

Is it right to say that you deliberately delayed your album release to coincide with the election period?

I kind of despise politics. If you notice very well, you will never see me hanging around any politician. You will never see me in their houses, taking pictures with them and all that.

What then is your view about artistes who are going into politics?

I think it is okay. If they are seeking elective offices because they want to serve the people, if their heart is there and it is not for money, then it is commendable.

You recently said you were leaving music scene…

    That was a publicity stunt.

  • I’m open to criticism, says M.I

I’m open to criticism, says M.I

With the launch of his album in a few days to come, Chocolate City recording act, Jude Abaga popularly known as M.I, has said that his songs are open to criticism because, “critics make the music industry up and doing.”

The rap heavyweight who recently released a single, King James, off his forthcoming album, spoke at the M.I Leadership Summit which took place at the Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“Shoutout to everyone that is active on the Nigerian entertainment scene. I’d rather have 1000 people say they hate my song than 50 people say they like it. The reason I said that is because the conversation gets things moving,” he said.

Otherwise called Mr Incredible, Abaga has won several awards, including the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009. In 2010, he was nominated for BET Awards for the Best International Act Category.

MI’s popularity is reported to have dwindled after his second album M.I2 dropped. Fans complained that he had grown lyrically weak, but perhaps these criticisms are what he said make his coming album thick.
