    Court jails man for stealing car battery

    A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 22-year-old driver, Daniel Evans, to four months imprisonment for stealing car battery.

    The Judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5, 000 fine.

    Ado advised the convict to desist from committing crime, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Evans, who resides at Mpape Karmo Abuja, was convicted on a count charge of theft.

    The convict pleaded guilty to the charge, but urged the court to tamper justice with mercy.

    He said he stole the car battery because his was bad and he had no money to buy another one.

    The Prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, had earlier told the court that one Samuel Fisayo of Life Camp, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on Sept. 11.

    Obatomi said the convict stole the complainant’s car battery, valued at N45, 000, on Sept. 9.

    The prosecutor added that Evans confessed to the crime during police investigation and begged for mercy.

    Obatomi said the offence was punishable under Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Three youths get 15 months for stealing carpet

    Three youths — Aliyu Ahmed, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Sani Bala — of between ages 21 and 23, who strayed into Gwarimpa area of Abuja and stole a carpet, are to spend five months each in prison.

    A Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Kado, Abuja, sentenced the trio of Ahmed, 22; Abdullahi, 21; and Bala 23 for joint act and theft.

    They pleaded guilty to the charges at the resumed hearing of the case on Monday.

    The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, who handed down the verdict, however, gave them an option of N10, 000 fine each.

    Ado, who warned them to desist from committing crimes, said the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.

    Before the judgement​ was delivered, the convicts pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Judith Obatomi told the court that the accused were caught by some policemen on patrol in Gwarimpa area of  Abuja on Aug. 9.

    According to him, a brown carpet was recovered from them.

    The offences contravened Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced 25-year-old Abdul Mohammed to 10 months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone.

    The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, who handed down the verdict, however gave him an option of N12, 000 fine.

    Ado warned him to desist from committing crimes and be of good behaviour henceforth.

    Mohammed, who is a resident of Life Camp, Abuja, was convicted for joint act, criminal trespass and theft.

    He pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying an urgent financial need pushed him into stealing.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Judith Obatomi told the court that the complainant, Onyechosi Chideboro of Utako Market, Abuja,
    reported the incident at Utako Police Station on June 16.

    Obatomi said the accused with another man still at large went to the complainant’s shop to buy clothes valued at N19,000
    and they ended up stealing his Techno phone valued at N120,000.

    She said during police investigation, the accused confessed to the crime and the item was recovered from him.

    The offences contravened Sections 79, 288 and 342 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation.

    Electrician bags three months imprisonment for removing roof top

    A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced one Abubakar Maikasuwa, 25, to three months imprisonment for joint act and theft.

    The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave the convict, an electrician N3, 000 option of fine.

    The convict who resides at Karmo, Abuja, was convicted on a two-count charge levelled against him.

    The convict prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, that he needed money urgently, that was why he committed the offence.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, told the court that one Awal Shehu, of Sarki Hausawa Dape village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on June 17.

    Obatomi said on that same date, the convict and one other person now at large, removed the roof and wood of the security house at Rain Oil, Karmo.

    He said that during police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 289 of the Penal Code.

  • Man in court for theft of home appliances

    A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday, arraigned one Nlarian Nlowe, 28, for alleged theft.

    The defendant, who is standing trial on a count charge, resides at Jabi area, Abuja.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, said one Ugomma Rita, of the same address with the defendant, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station Abuja on March 9.

    Obatomi said that the complainant alleged that sometimes in August 2016, she left the defendant as her childhood friend in her room and travelled to Lagos.

    On her arrival, she discovered that her LG home theater, stabiliser, DSTV, shoes and her clothes, valued N120, 000 were missing.

    The prosecutor said she called the defendant to confirm what happened but he switched off his phone.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him, saying that he was not aware of those items that were stolen.

    However, the prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 and one surety in like sum.

    Ado said that the surety must be a worker in any corporate organisation and must have worked for five years and should reside within​the court jurisdiction.

    He adjourned the case till June 21 for further hearing.

     

  •  Two housewives docked for affray in FCT

    Two housewives — Joy Nnamani and Rita Maduka  — were on Thursday brought before a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, over alleged affray.

    The women — Nnamani, 32, and Maduka 29 — residents of Daki Biyu Village, Abuja, are standing trial on two-count charge of breaching public peace and causing hurt.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Judith Obatomi told the court that Maduka reported the incident at the Life Camp Police Station on March 24.

    Obatomi said the complainant alleged that she saw her daughter fighting Nnamani’s son in their house.

    “While she was trying to separate them, Nnamani hit her with a piece of wood and and they started fighting.

    “Maduka sustained injuries in the face and was taken to Gwarimpa General Hospital, Abuja.”

    The offences contravened Sections 113 and 246 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation.

    The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Lawrence Enyisan, urged the court to grant them bail, promising they will not jump bail.

    In his ruling on the bail application, the judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, granted them bail in the sum of N10, 000 each and one surety each in like sum.

    Ado said the sureties must be family members, who reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    Further hearing has been adjourned until May 15.

     

     

     

  • Driver jailed for criminal breach of trust, cheating

    A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced one Emeka Uchenna, 31, to three months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust, cheating and theft.

    The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however gave the convict N3, 000 option of fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes.
    Uchenna, a resident of Gwagwa Tasha, Abuja, had begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
    Earlier, the prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, had told the court that one Martins Favour of Kado Fish Market, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on March 31.
    Obatomi said that the complainant said that on Feb. 2, he entrusted his Toyota Sienna vehicle to the convict for commercial purpose.
    She said that the parties agreed that the convict should remit N20, 000 every two days.
    The prosecutor said that since the convict collected the car he refused to remit any money, but instead switched off his phone to avoid any contact.
    Obatomi said that it was later discovered that he abandoned the said vehicle at Jabi Garage, Abuja, without telling the owner of the car.
    The prosecutor said that during police investigation he confessed to the crime, while the offence is punishable under Sections 312, 322 and 287 of the Penal Code.
