    Julius Agwu honours Arik MD

ACE Comedian Julius Agwu last Friday presented the MD of Arik, Mr Chris Ndulue, with an award for his support for the Nigeria entertainment industry. The presentation of the award came weeks after the entertainer honoured the MD at the 10th anniversary of his show, Crack Ya Ribs, in London which held August 30, 2015.

Agwu, who recently had a successful surgery, thanked the airline for supporting his ventures.

“I have written proposals to other airlines on so several occasions all to no avail but Arik has always been there for me and my colleagues,” said Agwu, “which is why I thought it necessary to appreciate them for the good thing they are doing.”

Mr Ndulue responded by saying Arik appreciated Agwu’s brand and entertainment in Nigeria.

“People ask all the time why does Arik support the Entertainment industry,” he said.

“And my response to that is, why would any business not support the entertainment industry with all the success they have made? Arik is proudly Nigeria and we understand the impact of entertainment and we keyed into that as our own way of giving back.”

Agwu who said he almost contemplated suicide because of peoples’ comments, disclosed he was holding a thanksgiving service on November 8, the same day he is holding his show, ‘Laff for Christ sake.’

“I have said it I’m going to start using all my platforms to promote God’s work,” he said.

“He has giving me a second chance and He’s all I’m living for now. Next year, February 7th I am going to be doing a show I tagged: life as I see it, celebrating God. On that same day I am going to be unveiling my second book and album also entitled Life as you see it. “

  • Julius Agwu opens up on state of health

Julius Agwu opens up on state of health

Rumours were rife that celebrated Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu was battling a strange illness but nobody could particularly place a finger on it. This became even more so as the entertainer chose to keep mute about the issue.

However, the ‘musicomedy’ champion has decided to open up on his near death experience.

Speaking with Yes Magazine recently, the Theatre Arts graduate of the University of Port Harcourt described his survival as “God at work and that is why I will forever thank Him”

He revealed how at some point, he started noticing that he was losing weight, which got many people wondering. According to him, some concerned people proffered solutions, both medical and spiritual, while others resorted to murmur and gossip.

Agwu said that sometime in May, things heightened when he had a seizure at home  while his wife, Ibiere, battled to save him, he ran out of breath, in an almost lifeless state.

With the likely consequences starring her in the face, he said, Ibiere got their maid and the security man to get him to their hospital in Lekki.

At the hospital, Agwu narrates, the doctors battled for hours and, upon stabilizing him, he immediately left for the United States of America with his wife.

Upon arriving the States, Houston to be precise, arrangements were made at a Hospital. After a series of tests, two lumps were discovered in his brain, he explains.

The artiste recalls how the lumps had been ‘messing up his health and causing his incessant weight loss.’ The Caucasian surgeons  Immediately went to work, operating on him for about 4 hours on Tuesday, May 12.

Upon being discharged, Julius said that he rested in the US for sometime before recently returning home.

Julius Agwu started drawing attention to himself sometime last year when fans noticed that he had been losing weight and colour. Things got so bad that his looks became the attention of a heated twitter debate in December last year.

  • Julius Agwu worried over Rivers State

Julius Agwu worried over Rivers State

These are not the best of times in Rivers State, following the Presidential and House of Assembly elections which held yesterday, and comedian Julius Agwu seems to be particularly worried over developments in the state.

Dropping a poignant one-liner on his Twitter page, the diminutive entertainer who was eyeing a career in politics wrote: “I weep for my state #RiversState.”

However, despite the replies, Agwu remained mum as to the direct reason for sending his tweet. But there are indication he was referring to the confusion in Rivers State, following Saturday’s election.

In the aftermath of the elections, violence had erupted in some parts of the State. It was reported that four persons died while some houses were burnt in different places across the state.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi had called for the election results to be cancelled, saying there was no election. “I realised that in all polling units in my ward, all the result sheets had been hijacked and I sought to know why (and) the presiding officers reported that the EOs, that is the Electoral Officers had taken all the result sheets from them,” Amaechi said in an interview.

“Then I began to receive calls from all over the state that they took all the result sheets.”

Sequel to this perceived anomaly, supporters of the APC in the state took a protest to the INEC office, demanding that elections be rescheduled in the state.

Agwu, a successful Nigerian entertainer, who founded a genre of music called musicomedy, was widely reported last year as being interested in contesting the governorship position of Rivers State.

  • Julius Agwu Fetes celebrities at daughter’s birthday

LIKE a dome of many colours, Fun Factory, a leisure spot in Lekki, Lagos, was in full glow last Sunday.

The amusement park lived up to its promise of unrestrained fun, courtesy of popular comedian, Julius Agwu. The occasion was his daughter’s birthday.

It was indeed a terrific weekend for Lagos fun seekers as Agwu ensured that there was food in excess for everyone at the event. Friends and family members also played appreciable roles in making the event a resounding success.

Julius and his wife showed what hospitality was all about as they treated guests to a classy display of affluence. The calibre of guests that turned up was a testimony to Julius’s status as a big player in the entertainment sector.

  • Julius Agwu for governor

    Julius Agwu for governor

Let’s get this straight from the beginning.  The man I write about is Julius ‘the genius’  Agwu. The same Julius Agwu you have probably attended his Crack Ya Ribs comedy shows or seen his comedy VCDs, which sell for as cheap as N100. You can even get the VCD for N70 at Alaba International Market on the outskirts of Lagos.

Some years back, Julius Agwu was one of the many graduates of Theatre Arts trying to find their feet. He had always had a funny side and comedy came easy to him. Many who underwent the one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme with him in Katsina, including my elder sister, said he cracked their ribs at the orientation camp.

I understand that when he was still struggling, he squatted with ace actor Segun ‘Oju’ Arinze in his flat somewhere in Lagos. From Arinze’s home, he tried his hands on some comedy and theatre stuffs. With time, comedy paid off and his story changed from that of grass to grace.

After conquering the comedy world, it is time to move on. And what else is there to move on to other than politics? It took a lot of begging from his people for Agwu to finally take the bait. They pleaded and pleaded and sent delegations upon delegations before he deemed it right to join the crowded race for Rivers governor.  The knee caps of some of the women involved in the begging almost peeled on the floor of his mansion before he decided to serve his people and help continue the legacy of his brother, Rotimi Amaechi.

The message on Agwu’s poster on the social media simply reads: “Our moment of change. Julius Agwu for governor. Rivers 2015.”

You may never see the poster on the streets of Port Harcourt, where for four years he was a university student. Chances are that you won’t see it also on the streets of Buguma or Finima. The world has gone digital and ‘the genius’ is taking advantage of this.  There are so many platforms on the social media that it will soon become needless wasting money on billboards and posters and all those stuffs politicians do. ‘The genius’ is set to put that to test using the social media.

Forget his height; it has nothing to do with being a governor. Pay less attention to his financial capacity to run for such an exalted office; he will disarm the people with his jokes and he will have their votes free of charge. For security reasons, he is not revealing the identities of his financial backers.

Agwu has no political party. My mind tells me he wants to run as an independent candidate. Don’t tell me the constitution does not allow it. What a genius will see sitting down, a fool will not see even with the aid of binoculars. What does he need a political party for anyway? Political parties are sources of headache, which ‘the genius’ can do without.  Better still, he can run as a quasi-independent candidate by using a less popular platform like the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which had a dismal outing in the Osun governorship race by scoring a little over 400 votes. He stands no chance in the big parties in his state.

In Rivers, there are two dominant parties: the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which already have power centres, which ‘the genius’ cannot break into. In the APC, Agwu stands no chance of clinching the party’s ticket. The race is between two serving members of the National Assembly. And to add salt to injury, he will also find a bottleneck in his kinsman, Governor Rotimi Amaechi who has vowed that nobody from his area will succeed him.  Like Amaechi, Agwu is Ikwerre. Amaechi, by next May 29, would have been governor for about eight years. On this basis, he says he will not support any Ikwerre person to be governor.

The PDP, whose ticket he could have sought, is a mad house. At the last count, there are some 20 men who have shown interest in being its governorship torchbearer. But the man who seems in control is Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike. He helped install the Felix Obuah-led executive council, which has not hidden where its loyalty lies. The others are not leaving anything to chance. Last weekend, some of them announced a breakfast meeting with the sole agenda  of  ‘cutting Wike to size’. The Wike camp last weekend too, through an advertorial, condemned the breakfast meeting.  So, with this sort of fire in PDP, Agwu needs a new order.

He also does not need the brouhaha associated with which part of the state has the right to produce the governor after Amaechi. In over 15 years, the upland part of the state has been in charge. The riverine people, who are basically Ijaw, say it is their time. The Ogoni are also angling for the position. They say as the majority in Rivers Southeast the seat should be conceded to them. The riverine people have said this will amount to still keeping power in the upland part, which has had it since 1999. And they are screaming injustice.

This is my advice to Agwu. First, he needs to rebrand by presenting himself simply as the third force and severing every ethnic tie. He should sell himself as the Rivers candidate. His manifesto should also show the power of comedy in disarming the Federal Government to give the state its dues. Federal roads in the state need attention. Agwu’s manifesto should promise that he has got the skills to get the Presidency to fix these roads and other infrastructure pronto. The manifesto should also show that never again will Rivers be cheated of its rights. In fact, he can promise to get back the oil wells taken from the state through his comic skills.

With Agwu as governor, the state will also be saving a lot of money. Never again will the state spend any kobo on any Master of Ceremonies (MC). Governor Agwu will play this role. All he needs do is to dash from the high table to the microphone stand as the need arises. The era of the state wasting money on stand-up comedians will also be gone. Agwu will also dish out comedy free of charge at government functions. And in case the state decides to go into film-making,  Agwu’s’ training as a theatre artist will come into play. He will act, produce and direct at no cost to the state. He will also be able to get his colleagues to work on the production at a reduced rate. Since he can also sing, there will be no need to pay for the soundtrack. He will simply head for the studio and produce the soundtrack.

And if you think this whole Agwu-for-Rivers-governor stuff is a joke, the 41-year-old Choba indigene, in an interview on his ambition, said: “Ever since that story broke, I have been receiving calls and getting text messages from people. Even on social media, people have been telling me to just stick with comedy. They think it’s just another joke from me but it’s not. I mean to contest in 2015. I am above 40, to be precise I am 41 and I doubt if those who go for governorship have two heads. I think it’s high time youths realised they need to be part of the change that they so much desire and that’s exactly what I am doing.”

What more is there to say? All hail His Excellency Julius ‘the genius’ Agwu, the next governor of Rivers State.

  • Grammy: Nobody shut us out, say Nigerian celebs

Grammy: Nobody shut us out, say Nigerian celebs

Wthe news hit town, there were mixed reactions. It was said that some Nigerian celebrities, who travelled the United States to attend the last Grammy Awards ceremony, were reportedly barred from the event because they couldn’t afford to pay $4,000 for a table.

As soon as the news went viral on the social media, many wondered if the celebrities were invited for the show.

While they could rationalise the presence of the duo of Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye of Prime Time Entertainment at the event, not a few claimed that artistes like Kcee, Julius Agwu, Harrysong, Seyi Shay and Dencia, who was mistaken for Nicki Minaj, had gone only to show off.

However, the celebrities, who are rankled by this seeming insult, stated their own side of the story.

Julius Agwu said: “I had a pass already into the Grammy, so also other celebrities. We arrived the venue in a limo and walked through the red carpet. However, we can’t deny the fact that we are not known as celebrities. We might be big in Nigeria, but nobody knew us there. Maybe that’s why we just entered the venue, just as every other person that attended.”

In his comment, Adeneye, alias D1, said: “I don’t know why we (Nigerians) like spreading rumours. What do we intend to gain from spreading falsehood? I’m not happy about it; I must confess. This is because you can’t get to the red carpet without an invitation. In fact, you need to get an invitation and tickets are not being sold. You can’t even work freely on the street when you don’t have business at the Grammy. You can’t snap pictures inside the hall. Pictures are not allowed, except at the red carpet. It’s part of the rules.”

Ayo Animashaun, chief executive officer of Smooth Productions, explained: “Let me correct that impression. They don’t sell tables at the Grammy. We were invited. In fact, we drove our limo to the red carpet. You can’t even get to the red carpet without an invitation and once you get to the red carpet, you have access to the main hall. So, it’s a rumour.”
