Gov Godwin Obaseki of Edo has promised to operate an open door policy and commended workers in the State for the trust they have in his administration.

The governor spoke at a dinner on Monday night to felicitate with members of the Nigeria Labour congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on 2017 May Day.

The dinner was held alongside an award night organised by the Edo chapters of NLC and TUC.

The governor assured that he would operate an open door policy with them provided they continued to have confidence in his administration.

“Nothing good thrives in a community where there is no trust, you have given me your trust and I will not betray that trust.

“Today marks a new dawn, I want to be able to look back and say while I was a governor, I never had an incident of strike.

“As long as you trust me, I will put every issue in front of you for dialogue”, he said.

Obaseki promised the workers that the hosting of the Workers Day dinner would be a yearly event.

The governor said his government did not the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), from collecting dues and levies from its members in the state.

He said the present administration had adopted electronic system for revenue collection sequel to the ban on collection of taxes and levies by non government agents.

Obaseki explained that the technology was being test run so that the union would start collection of tax and levies from its members via electronic payment before the end of May.

The governor also commended leaders of the labour unions for the presentation of awards to outstanding personalities who he said had contributed immensely to the development of the state.

Chairmen of the NLC and TUC in Edo, Emmanuel Ademokun and Marshall Orhue commended Obaseki for hosting the unions’ members to a dinner after gracing the May Day celebration earlier in the day.

The duo said that the dinner went to show that the governor was workers friendly.

They added that the labour unions working with the state government would build a stronger Edo state.

Former Gov. Oserheimen Osunbor, former Deputy Governor Pius Odubu and immediate past Secretary to the State Government, Julius Ihonvbere were honoured.

The organisers of the award said it was a tradition of the labour unions to present awards of excellence to outstanding Nigerians during workers day celebration.

    Mixed feelings for Julius Ihonvbere

Professor Julius Ihonvbere, the Secretary to Edo State Government is presently faced with the dilemma of being caught between grieve and celebration. Ihonvbere was thrown into mourning with the death of his father, Chief John Ihnovbere, who died on Monday, February 2, 2015, at the age of 92. However, while still in the mourning mood, he still finds enough space to celebrate his wife who turned a year older. In the best ways he could, the late Pa Ihonvbere served his community and was the Odionwere of Aghoenlokhua (biggest quarter) in Luleha Clan. Pa Ihonvere was no slob and before his death, he worked in the health sector all his life.

Following the creation of the defunct Mid-West State, he was transferred from Oyo, the old Western Province to Warri, and then to Central Hospital, Benin, where he was later transferred to the General Hospital, Uzebba in Owan West local Government Area and retired after attaining the retirement age. Pa Ihonvbere left behind a wife, Chief Alice Titi Ihonvbere, and four children. Burial plans for the late icon are in full swing. But just as the family is yet to come out with the burial plans for their patriarch, Professor Ihonvbere is not sparing anything to celebrate his better half, Grace Ihonvbere, who waltzed into the golden age. As she breezed into her golden age in style, her husband ensured she had what can be called a little, but classy celebration, when they hosted friends and family members to an exciting time.

The Edo State government is to establish a new university and upgrade the College of Education, Ekiadolor, to a University of Education.

This was contained in two executive bills sent to the House of Assembly with a letter addressed to the Speaker and signed by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere on behalf of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

The letter dated March 24 and read by the Clerk of the House urged the lawmakers to consider a bill for a law to make provisions for the establishment of a university and a bill for a law to make provisions for the establishment of a University of Education at Ekiadolor and other matters connected therewith.

The bills were given first reading after the adoption of a motion by Majority Leader Philip Shaibu and seconded by Minority Leader Emma Okoduwa.

The government has granted the College of Agriculture, Agenebode, autonomy to operate as a diploma-awarding institution, subject to the ratification of the House of Assembly.

“It’s true that the governor granted autonomy that the school should operate independently at the State Executive Meeting. The school has operated as a Campus of the College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi since 1987 but now, it is a full-fledged college.

“It will now be called Edo State College of Technology, Agenebode. We have a consultant who is on ground to help set it up. The consultant has gone to the school to see the facilities on ground just as they were also at Iguoriakhi.”

  • How Oshiomhole can succeed, by Edo SSG

How Oshiomhole can succeed, by Edo SSG

Secretary to Edo State Government Professor Julius Ihonvbere has urged the people to support Governor Adams Oshiomhole in his bid to tramsform the stste.

He described him as a man of courage, integrity, and credibility, adding that the governor will do more for Edo State next year, if they cooperate with him.

The former university don spoke in Benin-City, the capital. He said: “Let us continue to pray for him to move higher after his stewardship here but I think what should concern us is who comes after Oshiomhole. If the person has just 50 percent of Oshiomhole’s quality, we can have parties and dance.

Ihonvhere urged the indigenes to be weary of fake leaders with myopic conceptualisation and pedestal understanding of the values of democracy.

He said: “The amount of money this government has invested in reconstruction of roads is huge. It is easy for Oshiomhole to construct cheap roads without street lights and drainages such that what we see is on the surface ,but the governor did not do that.

Anybody who has been to New York will know that New York does not have any road that is as good like the one Oshiomhole is constructing here and he is doing all these for all of u, our children and generations yet unborn, to show people that government and development is possible”.

The Secretary to Government called for the evalustion of politics and assessment of the elected representatives.

He said Edo State must always have in the National Assembly competent people who can articulate its interest in a country whose federalism has been eroded.

He stressed: “There is also the erosion of our federalism; we need people in Abuja as members of the National Assembly who can speak out because it is not enough to go around as Senator or House of Representatives member and wear suit or agbada, no. That is a place where you educate, where you use your brain, do pure research, articulate ideas, present facts and figures to convince your colleagues to say yes, you know what you are talking about.

“But they behave as if they are headmasters, who can summon classrooms teachers to the headmaster’s office whenever they like; this is not possible. I hope in the new year, we can take the lead on this.

“There is the need for us to begin to work on Edo identity where we can have our own anthem, our flag, our broach that we can give to anybody who comes here and this does not mean we do not recognize the national anthem or national flag because Edo is a federating unit.

“Oshiomhole has a social contract with the people, but before now, there were non. God in his infinite mercies looked down on Edo state and saw that our suffering has gone beyond the human solution and sent us a Moses; even his detractors now agree that yes, he has performed perfectly well beyond the social contract.
