  • Six things to consider when buying a laptop

Six things to consider when buying a laptop

We’ll all need a laptop at some point in our lives and there are some broad guidelines you should keep in mind when buying a laptop so you can buy the right one. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 6 of these broad guidelines to help you out.

    The Screen

When buying a laptop, be sure to go for the laptop that gives you the best screen within your price range. A good screen typically considers three things: resolution, viewing angles and size. Laptops with higher resolution screens are generally the best ones to choose. For portability, smaller screens are better, but if you intend to use the laptop for entertainment and architectural or artistic functions, then a bigger screen is best. Lastly, in terms of viewing angles, a laptop screen that touts IPS (in-plane switching) technology offers the widest viewing angles for the best user comfort.

    Screen Quality

You should consider laptops that are comfortable to look at because you are likely to be looking at it for quite some time during the day. Many laptops these days have touchscreens, but these touch screens tend to be glossy and glossy screens leads to reflections that negatively affect your eyes. You should therefore try to avoid these glossy screens and maybe opt for laptops that aren’t touchscreen, but if you must buy one go for the ones that don’t have glossy screens.

    RAM

Typically, more RAM is better. For a decent laptop experience, 4GB RAM can be considered, but 8GB RAM is recommended. If you intend to do a lot of video and photo editing, you can consider buying one with 16GB RAM. More RAM allows for more applications to run at the same time, and for more data to be quickly accessible to the system at any one time. When buying a laptop, it’s always best to consider the ones with more RAM compared to others, within your favored price range.

    Keyboard Quality

It’s advisable to choose a laptop with a keyboard that’s comfortable for you, rather than one that packs in every key and forces you to start hunting for keys. You should go for a keyboard with a comfortable layout with full sized keys and some space around the arrow keys. The keys should have a sort of ‘snappy responsiveness’ and should be easy on your fingers. When buying a laptop, it’s best to get a feel of the keyboard rather than ‘buying blind’ (asking someone to buy it for you or ordering online).

    CPU

Intel’s Core-Based CPUs are one of the best to consider when buying a laptop. Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 offer some of the best performance when it comes to multitasking and multimedia tasks. However, for Core i7-based systems, though they offer the best performance for your laptop, the heat emitted from the base of the laptop tends to be a cause for concern if you plan to use the laptop for a long time.

    Battery Life

Pay attention to the rating of the battery in Watt-hours (Wh) or milliamp-hours (mAh); typically the larger the figures, the longer the battery can last.

There many interesting things to explore in this historic and cultural city. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 interesting things about Benin City.

    The Royal Oba’s Palace

The Royal Oba’s Palace is at the heart of the city and a repository of Benin crafts. It’s really a cultural and historic ‘goldmine’ with interesting ancient adornments and ornaments that are sincerely a delight to explore.

    The Benin Moat

You’ve probably heard this name once or twice and wondered what exactly it was. The Benin Moat also known as ‘Iya’ is one of the largest man made earthwork in the world. The Benin Moat was actually used as a defensive fortification for the Ancient Benin City and its archaeology is recognized as something that is indeed admirable. However, the monument has in recent times been described as a ‘neglected monument in search of a rescuer’. Nevertheless, it’s still a truly interesting feature of the city and a testament to the ingenuity and engineering acumen of the old Benin Kingdom.

    Igun-Eronmwon Quarters

It’s also called Igun Street and is listed as a Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. The quarters is home to brass/bronze casting industries in Benin City and gives an opportunity to witness bronze casting in its various stages and buy any piece of your choice. Igue Festival

This is the most popular festival in the city and is where the Oba celebrates the history and culture of his people as he blesses the land and the people. The festival is typically celebrated at a time between Christmas and New year and it involves traditional dances, a mock battle and a procession to the palace to reaffirm loyalty to and respect for the Oba. The festival is typically an annual cycle of rituals and rites, and is used as a platform by the Edo people to display their rich culture and tradition.

    Revelation Tourist Palazzo

It’s a privately owned museum and tourist center put together by music maestro Prof. Victor Uwaifo. There are different exhibition points at this palazzo and each one extensively treats a specific subject, from music to culture, telling different sides of the Binis. It’s an educative and culturally enriching site to explore.

  • Five ways to deal with toxic people

Five ways to deal with toxic people

Toxic people ‘defy logic’. Some of them are unaware of their negative impact on others and others derive pleasure in causing chaos and pushing others to the edge. Because toxic people are so difficult to understand, it generally makes it difficult to effectively deal with them. Jumia Travel, the leading online agency, helps by sharing 5 ways to push through this difficulty and effectively deal with toxic people.

    Know Your Weakness

You need to recognize what makes you weak and susceptible to the wiles of toxic people. The moment you understand what it is about a toxic person that affects you so much, it will immediately be easier to deal with the problem. It also gives you an opportunity to work on yourself so no other can get to you through that ‘route’ again.

    Set Limits

Set limits with people you consider as toxic and distance yourself from them when necessary. Think of it this way: someone is smoking in front of you and you move away from the second-hand smoke. You move away to save yourself from health problems related to something you didn’t even initiate. Setting limits can involve communicating with the person to desist from provocative and toxic behaviours etc.

    Emotionally Detach Yourself

Most times the behaviours of toxic people go against reason. You should understand that you can’t beat a toxic person at their own game, you’ll get sucked in. You have to rise above it all, emotionally distance yourself from the situation and remove yourself from their traps. Approach interactions with toxic people like a ‘science project’ – deal only with facts, logic and reason, keep emotions out of it.

    Be Aware of Your Emotions

Emotionally detaching yourself from a situation involves being aware of your current emotional state. It involves ignoring whatever emotions you feel about the situation and remaining logical enough to recognize the current situation for what it actually is. If you feel you are losing control of your emotions, step back from it all and give yourself a break to buy yourself time to get a grip and find the best way to move forward with the situation and person. At this point, depending on its effect on you, you might decide that distancing yourself from the person might be best.

    Don’t Fixate

Stop thinking of how troubling or difficult a person is. Fixating on how crazy or toxic a person is can, in an interesting twist, turn you into an equally toxic person. You should focus instead on how you are going to effectively deal with and handle them. Focus on more on the actions you are going to take to better yourself and circumstances. Focusing on the solutions helps produce positive emotions that help to reduce your initial stress.

  • Five ways you let social media weaken your self esteem

Five ways you let social media weaken your self esteem

Studies show that two-thirds of people find it hard to relax or even sleep after spending time on social media. Why do you let yourself feel stressed, anxious or have negative thoughts after using social media? Why let social media affect your self-worth? Perhaps, it’s time for a self-evaluation and possibly a social media break? Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 5 ways you let social media weaken your self-esteem.

Your Real World Thoughts and Interactions are influenced by Social Media

Thinking about social media first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed is not healthy. You’re allowing yourself develop a dependence for it that can work against you in the not-too-distant future. If you can’t find a clear distinction or draw a fine line between your real world life and social media life, you are letting social media gradually erode your self-esteem.

Your Thoughts and Feeling about Yourself are influenced by Social Media

The moment you become aware of the fact that your feelings, thoughts and perceptions of yourself are being affected by social media, it is time for a break – whether a brief break or an indefinite break. Social media is not real life, you must never forget that. Getting likes should not be a means of self-validation, also never forget this. On social media you see only what people want you to see; you hardly see a completely true picture of their lives. It is unwise to base anything, especially something as serious as thoughts and perceptions about yourself, on a phenomenon as fleeting and facetious as social media.

You Can’t Spend Time Alone Without Social Media

Surely you should be able to spend time by yourself or engage in one or two activities without a visit to a social media platform. If you find face-to-face communications difficult, social media isn’t helping matters. You need to be strong and come out of your shell to have actual, tangible and real world relationships you can be proud of. Besides, most social media relationships are typically shallow and not as emotionally gratifying as real world relationships.

The Need to Share Everything on Social Media

If this is you, please stop. A better alternative is to develop real world relationships with people you can share your issues with, rather than airing your dirty laundry before the world. Speaking to an understanding person or even to a psychologist or church counselor will serve you better than social media. Don’t open yourself up to trolls and bullies that will derive pleasure in mocking your pain.

You Begin To Measure Your Success by Others

If all of a sudden, after joining one or two social media platforms measuring your success and accomplishments by others is all you seem to do, that’s a warning sign. Social media success doesn’t mean real life success. Even if it does mean real life success it’s wrong for you to make it a standard you have to live up to when you know nothing about the said person’s success backstory. You don’t know details of the person’s dealings and undertakings to achieve that success, so why on earth should you try to copy it or measure your success by it? Focus on your journey and be the best you can be, take a break from social media if you need to.

Growing Nigeria’s tourism sector need stakeholders collaboration – Experts

Experts in the travel and tourism industry have stated that cooperation among the major stakeholders in the industry is the panacea for growth.

This was stated at the recently concluded Tourism Summit which had the theme “Redefining the Roles of Industry Stakeholders in Shaping the 21st Century Travellers Experience”.

The event was put together by Jumia Travel, Nigeria’s leading online travel agency.

Speaking at the event, Ikechi Uko, CEO of Akwaaba International Trade Fair Market said government cannot single-handedly develop the multi-billion dollars industry.

He therefore made a call to all stakeholders within the industry to collaborate for the country to attain its goal.

Similarly, the managing director of Jumia Travel Nigeria, Kushal Dutta spoke on the potentials of the country’s tourism. In his remark, he enjoined all the key players in the industry to come together and support the government in building the sector. Kushal also pointed out that there are a lot of tourist destinations that people are choosing to spend their holiday in the country. He encouraged Nigerians to travel within Nigeria and explore the amazing tourist attractions in the country.

“80% percent the travels within Nigeria is to Lagos and people are visiting places like Epe Resort, La Campagne, Whispering Palms; in Calabar, Obudu Mountain Resort is also a good tourism attraction but gets seasonal patronage. Outside Nigeria, people visit the likes of Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, and Zanzibar,” he said.

While commenting on the most popular locations that Nigerians are flying to, the representative of Kenya Airways who was also on the panel, Abiola Bakare revealed that Nigerians mostly travel to London and US, but not necessarily for leisure. He added: “There’s also a major preference for destinations in Dubai. However, the problem of the foreign exchange greatly affected the travel and tourism industry”.

Also, popular travel blogger and founder of Social Prefect Tours, Chiamaka Obuekwe mentioned Ikogosi in Ekiti State and Olumo Rock in Abeokuta as some of the locations people are looking to travel to. “Ikogosi and Olumo rock have been the major tourist attractions because many want some kind of adventure. South West is beginning to enjoy tourism traffic because of the opportunities the region provided.”

Chiamaka advised the Nigerian government to do a lot more in promoting tourism and destination sites in the country, adding that Zanzibar and South Africa are doing a good job in promoting the tourism in their countries.

  • Six surprising ways to make boring tasks interesting

Six surprising ways to make boring tasks interesting

Sometimes it might feel like you have to complete ordinary, frustrating and seemingly useless tasks. These tasks have a way of demoralizing and discouraging you and this can keep you from finding enjoyment or fulfillment in your work. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 6 ways to make these boring tasks more interesting.

    Change Your Mindset

Don’t give up and start dwelling on the erroneous fact that you are stuck in a rut and will never be able to find interest in or actually enjoy these tasks. Get rid of that thought completely. Understand that everything in life is a choice. You might not be able to change what you are doing, but you might as well find a way to make it bearable until you are able to make a change. Take the reins, take control and make completing that task a choice to enjoy as opposed to a depressing non-negotiable commitment.

    Stimulate Yourself and Your Environment

Try to make your surroundings interesting. If your present environment is dull, move to one that’s livelier for you, one that brightens your mood and makes completing the task more interesting; however, ensure you’re still able to concentrate on your work. If you can’t change your environment or if a change of environment will be too distracting, play some music, listen to a vlog or listen to an audiobook while you work.  Basically, liven up your environment in a way that will not disturb your concentration.

    Find the Bright Side

There’s always something to learn from these boring tasks. Discover things you can learn from completing such tasks. Find out how these tasks can benefit you or find ways to make these tasks beneficial to you. For example, writing a business report might be boring but the research you do in the process adds to your knowledge pool and teaches you important skills like how to communicate clearly, fact checking and how to organize important documents. The knowledge added and skills gained can help to prepare you for other opportunities and push you forward in your career.

Break the Duration of the Task into Manageable Periods

It can further worsen your feeling of discouragement and dissatisfaction, when you have to work on boring tasks with little or no break. It’s easier on you if you manage your time and split the completion of the task into manageable periods so you can dabble into one or two other things in the process. It helps to keep you energized and focused. If your task is one you can split into periods, then please do so.

    Reward Yourself

If there’s no one to appreciate and encourage you, then by all means please do so yourself. Self-love and appreciation is the best form of love and appreciation. To make completing boring tasks more interesting, give yourself a treat when you are done with it. It can be daily, weekly or monthly, it’s your choice. The treat can be as simple as watching a movie when you are done or if you want to be a bit more elaborate splurging on something nice after weeks or months of successfully completing the task.

    Count Your Blessings

This mainly helps you keep things in perspective and keep the right frame of mind while performing a boring task. Sit for a moment and think of how much worse it could be and the fact that someone somewhere in the world or even as close as in your neighborhood is living through that worst case scenario. You’ll feel a little more appreciative and completing the task will be easier to bear (at least until you are able to get something better).

  • Seven ways to maintain weight loss

Seven ways to maintain weight loss

Probably one of the most frustrating things ever is to go through all the work and effort to lose weight, and then in the blink of an eye, you gain back all your lost weight with some extra pounds. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 7 ways to help maintain weight loss to avoid gaining back the excess weight.

    Change Your Mindset

Avoid thinking of how you are eventually going to be free to eat whatever whenever when you finally lose the excess weight, and start accepting the very important fact that you became as big as you once were because you were nonchalant and careless with your eating. You thus need to change your lifestyle and start eating the right way at the right time, not eating whatever whenever.

Be Mindful of Your Food Intake

The exercise of watching what you eat is something that will never stop even after losing some or all of your excess weight. You should always be watchful of what you eat and how much you eat. Eat out of respect for your body, don’t be reckless with your food intake, don’t subscribe to just eating anything because you feel you can.

    Avoid Restrictive Diets

Crash diets, detox diets and restrictive diets are three of the worst things ever conceived to help individuals lose weight. Because of how restrictive they are, they actually slow your metabolism and shift your appetite-regulating hormones which are two of the main factors that contribute to subsequent weight gain. Rather than considering these diets and their extreme and near impossible rules, stick with lifestyle changes that will help you develop habits you can incorporate to help maintain your weight loss in the long run.

    Don’t be Immobile

Physical activity is important to maintain weight loss. If you’re not a gym or an exercise person, engage in activities that get you moving as opposed to just sitting and lounging all day. Physical activity helps to burn off extra calories, increase your metabolism and achieve energy balance. This energy balance means you burn the same or close to the same number of calories that you consume. As a result, your weight is more likely to remain the same.

    Stay Hydrated

Don’t be so quick to chew on something, consider drinking water the next time you feel like eating something without actually being hungry. Most times, you really are just thirsty not particularly hungry. Water promotes fullness and helps you keep your calorie intake in check. Drinking water before meals also helps reveal your true level of hunger and reduces calorie intake by more than 10%.

Get Back On Wagon As Soon As Possible

Holidays, vacations, owambe’s and many other celebrations and activities happen that interfere with your plan to eat properly and responsibly. It happens. Even models fall off the wagon and overeat or eat carelessly sometimes. What matters is for you to get back on course as soon as possible. Make it a learning experience, not a failure. Remember, weight maintenance is a journey not a sprint.

    Don’t Do It Alone

Weight maintenance is easier when you have support and are accountable to people. Get some help from family, friends and even co-workers you can trust to help keep you in check when they see you are starting to fall off the wagon.

  • Five telltale signs of a weak business brand

Five telltale signs of a weak business brand

How do you measure your business brand? How do you know when your brand is losing strength and beginning to weaken? It can be difficult gaining the right perspective about the state of your brand because of how intangible the factors to be considered can be, however it can be done. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 5 signs that help to identify a weak business brand.

You Can’t Clearly Describe What Differentiates Your Brand from Competitors’

When you can’t explain in a sentence or less what makes your brand different from competitors’, that’s a clear sign of a weak business brand. You should be able to easily and clearly identify what differentiates you from your rivals, aside price, colour or some new feature.

You Haven’t Properly Defined Your Values, Mission and Vision Statement

Remember the saying, “if you don’t stand for something, you fall for anything”. You need to clearly define your values, mission and vision statement and stick with it. It should not be something that changes every now and then; it should be constant and properly upheld in your corporate and business actions and even inactions. People respect and trust constancy and dependability, and when your business brand is identified with this it will go far.

Your Logo Constantly Changes and Isn’t Telling a Story

Your logo is your symbol of recognition. You cannot afford to be complacent with it. Settle down, think deeply about it, select a logo that best represents your brand and the story behind your brand and stick with it, come rain or sunshine. You can make improvements to the logo in the future, make a few adjustments here and there, but it should still retain its basic concept and design. Remember, your logo is unique, it’s yours and yours alone, so spend however long you need to make it count.

People Talk About the Founder Not the Brand

Your brand is your business identity, when people regard you, the founder, or anyone associated with the brand more than they regard the actual business brand, that’s indicative of a weak business brand. The point of having a brand is for it to develop its own identity, outlive its founders and reach far into the future. Creating a brand is more or less creating a legacy for your business. If people only remember the people associated with the brand and how the business brand is nothing without them, it will be hard for your brand to remain relevant in the coming future.

You Constantly Have to Compete On Price

One of the attributes of a strong brand is it being able to convince customers, clients or consumers that the brand is worth their money. If your brand has to keep struggling with prices to get customers, clients or consumers attention, that’s indicative of a weak brand because what that means is that your services or products are mainly being patronized to save money. However, if your brand is generally associated with the lowest prices like the Shoprite brand or Mr Price brand, then competing on price is quite normal and non-indicative of a weak brand.

  • Nine things to know about crowdfunding

Nine things to know about crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is a form of crowd-sourcing and alternative finance that basically involves funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people. It allows entrepreneurs raise capital without giving up too much equity. It has over the years become an effective alternative for raising funds for business ideas. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 9 things entrepreneurs should know about crowdfunding to take full advantage of it.

    Plan

It is difficult to plan a crowdfunding campaign because you don’t know what to expect and can hardly predict the kind of reaction your campaign might get. Your campaign may or may not go viral but either way, you should be prepared to handle possible press attention and to respond to your growing community. You should be able to manage things immediately as they come up.

    Choose the Right Platform

Spend time researching on the different internet-mediated registries or online platforms for crowdfunding, and choose the one that is right for you. Choose a site that fits your project and the industry you are in.

    Pay Attention to the Deal

You should pay attention to the details of the terms of the platform, the percentage the platform takes and when you get the money. This is to avoid nasty surprises down the road. Pay attention to the deal of your crowdfunding platform and find the one you are comfortable with.

    Think About Your Messaging

It is easier to raise money for an idea that touches a lot of people whether or not the venture is for-profit or not-for-profit. Consider the message of your campaign and think of how you can make it relevant to as many people in your target group as possible.

    Learn from Others

Check out and analyze other successful crowdfunding campaigns to see and understand what worked for them and how you can apply it to your campaign. However, you should be realistic about how much of what you learn from these campaigns you can apply to yours, considering your resources. Adapt ideas in a way that fit your budget, target group and brand.

Be Prepared to Tell Your Story (Be Transparent)

You need to be authentic with your campaign and be as transparent as possible. Without these, people are less likely to respond positively to your campaign, they’ll remain skeptical and unbelieving. Be as communicative, engaging and as open with your community as possible, let them know as much as they want to know and have as much evidence as they need to believe your campaign.

    Get Early Adopters

Get friends, family and people you know to invest right away. This is because people are more likely to invest when they see others investing and people tend to trust a campaign when it seems to be doing well. Investors are also likely to develop an interest to invest when they see your campaign is something the public/community are interested in and responding positively to.

    Have a Strategy for Marketing

You need a consistent and persistent marketing plan that will help you reach far beyond your circles – asking two or three friends to help you repost or share your campaign isn’t enough. Research and figure out where to find the people in your target community and create eye-grabbing, heart-grabbing and convincing social media posts and ads to grab their attention, generate interest and incite a positive response to your campaign.

You can also create genuine relationships with influencers and reach out to as many of them as you can to support your cause and help you get the word out.

    Crowdfunding Can Fail Very Easily

You should be prepared for this reality. You need to know when to crowdfund and when to approach other resources. Not all businesses are suited for crowdfunding. However, once you have considered these and work towards the proper execution of your crowdfunding campaign, its chances of failure are reduced.

  • Eight most fuel efficient cars

    Eight most fuel efficient cars

We all know Nigeria’s erratic fuel price situation – one moment it’s up and the next it’s down. The current removal of fuel subsidy has helped stabilize the price a bit, but it’s still on the high side compared to the low prices we once enjoyed. At this point, fuel efficient cars are more or less a blessing to Nigerians. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 8 of the most fuel efficient cars to consider the next time you’re in the car market.

    Hyundai Sonata

This is a comfortable ride with great rear-seat room. It’s affordable and has a sound and responsive handling. It has an estimated fuel economy rating is within the range of about 8.5 kilometers per liter to about 13.9 Km/L.

    Toyota Camry

Regardless of your reservations about Toyota cars, one thing you have to admit is that they deliver most of what consumers want in a midsized car. It is comfortable to drive, cheaper and easier to maintain than other car brands. The Toyota Camry offers a kind of ‘no-fuss’ driving experience with sound handling and a roomy and comfortable interior that makes it a pleasant car to drive. It’s estimated fuel economy within the range of about 9.8 Km/L to about 13.6 Km/L.

    Mitsubishi Mirage

This is another affordable car with an inviting image of economy and thriftiness. However, the vehicle still deals with issues of sluggish acceleration, a not-so-good handling and a not so powerful engine. Nevertheless, the car is reasonably roomy, cheap and economical. Its estimated fuel economy within the range of about 11.2 Km/L to about 17.3 Km/L.

    Toyota Rav4

This SUV provides a strong blend of fuel efficiency, comfort, roominess and reliability. It’s a great family car with sound handling, quiet with a commendable performance. It has an estimate fuel economy range of about 12.75 Km/L to about 15.73 Km/L.

Its estimate fuel economy rating is within the range of about 10.7 Km/L to about 14.5 Km/L.

    Mazda3

This is a fun to drive car with a perky handling and great engine. It is one of the most fuel efficient cars and offers some luxury features that are rare for compact cars in its category, although it’s not particularly as roomy as the others but it’s still very ok. Its estimated fuel economy range is from about 10.6 Km/L to about 13.9 Km/L.

    Honda Civic

This car delivers great fuel economy, is comfortable with precise handling, a spacious interior but unfortunately not the most reliable car out there. It’s however capable and refined with a reasonably powerful engine. Its estimated fuel economy range is from about 12.3 Km/L to about 13.9 Km/L.
