    Will Smith joins jury of 70th Festival de Cannes

    American actor, producer, rapper, and songwriter, Will Smith has been named as one of the 9-member jury of this year’s edition of the popular Festival de Cannes, taking place in Cannes, France from May 17 to 18.

    Other members of the jury, which is being headed by Spanish movie director, writer and producer, Pedro Almodóvar, as President, include Maren Ade (Director, Screenwriter, Producer – Germany); Jessica Chastain (Actress, Producer – United States); Fan Bingbing (Actress, Producer – China); Agnès Jaoui (Actress, Screenwriter, Director,  Singer – France); Park Chan-wook (Director, Screenwriter,  Producer – South Korea); Paolo Sorrentino (Director,  Screenwriter – Italy); and Gabriel Yared (Composer – France).

    The jurors are expected to select from among the films in competition, and the winners will be announced on Sunday 28th May at the closing ceremony, following which the Palme d’or (the best film category) will be awarded in the presence of the winning team.

    AFRIMA jury storm Lagos

    Members of the jury for the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, have arrived in Lagos, Nigeria and have commenced the adjudication exercise ahead of the nominee announcement which comes up today.

    The screening/nominee selection is scheduled to hold in Lagos State just as the city was last Monday, declared the host city for AFRIMA 2016 by the African Union.

    The 13-person International Jury of AFRIMA, which represents the five regions of Africa, the Diaspora and AUC, are: Kawesa Richard (Eastern Africa-Uganda), Delani Makhalima (Southern Africa-Zimbabwe), Christian Syren (Southern Africa-Southern Africa), Rita Ray (Diaspora-UK), Kiki Toure(Central Africa – Equatorial Guinea), Rab Bakari (Diaspora –USA), Oscar Kidjo (Western Africa-Benin Republic), Laolu Akintobi (Western Africa-Nigeria), Tabu Osusa (Eastern Africa-Kenya), Robert E. Ekukole (Central Africa-Cameroon), Angela Martins (African Union Rep.)   promises to uphold the AFRIMA’s value of FACEIT (Fairness, Authenticity, Creativity,  Excellence, Integrity, Transparency).

    The entry submission process that was opened to artistes, music professionals and other stakeholders living on the continent and in the Diaspora, commenced on Monday May 30 and closed on July 30, 2016, realizing a total score of over 2,714 entries from music practitioners across the continent for this year’s edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA.

    According to the organisers, the purpose for this 7-day screening exercise and nominee selection is to provide for well-deserving artistes and music professionals to emerge as winners ranging from the regional categories to the continental categories. The adjudication process, organisers say, will be concluded by the final announcement of the nominees’ list in all 34 categories.

    Cussons Baby Moments unveils Season 3 Jury

    Three  renowned professionals, ace movie actress and producer, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, creative photographer, Yetunde Babaeko and a bespoke tailor and fashion designer,  Mai Atafo have been unveiled once again to continue as jury of the Cussons Baby Moments Season 3. The three celebrities have been the jurors of the events since Season 2 in 2014.

    The brand has taken yet another step towards rewarding babies and their parents, having previously rewarded Daniel Uwadia in 2014 and Morireoluwa Modesire Davids in 2015. It would be recalled that Cussons Baby recently hosted ‘Toddler Grow and Shine’ competition for toddlers to exhibit their talents.

    The inaugural Cussons Baby Toddler Grow and Shine produced Imisioluwa Oladapo as the grand prize winner, and she took home N1million education grant.

    While introducing the panel of judges to the media in Lagos to kick start the season 3 of the competition, the Group Brand Development and Activation Manager Faith Okoli, said that the Cussons Baby Moments initiative is a platform meant for parents to share the captivating and amazing moments of their babies in pictures and videos.

    Mrs. Okoli said “We are proud to have the season 3 of Cussons Baby Moments because this is yet another occasion to celebrate our bundles of joy”

    Speaking on the platform as a means of showcasing captivating and amazing baby moments, Mrs. Okoli said parents upload pictures of their babies on the Cussons Baby Facebook page and these uploads are voted for. Selections are based on the highest number of likes. The judges subsequently review the selected images based on some key parameters. Basically, the selection is 2-tier: Family and friends of the babies and the Cussons Baby judges’

    While explaining the rationale behind the choice of panelists, Mrs. Okoli said ‘’every baby is amazing and it is very difficult to select a winner among winners. Hence, our choice of  three professionals that are not only parents and well respected members of the society, but are also renowned in their chosen careers. Our judges have been with us from the inception of the Cussons Baby Moments in 2014. They can easily identify with those unique budding attributes and captivating moments we desire to celebrate in our babies’’

    2015 Uganda Film Festival: Nigerian chairs jury

    Celebrated filmmaker, Femi Odugbemi, has just returned from another successful international assignment serving as the Chairman of Jury of the just-concluded Uganda Film Festival (UFF) held in Kampala, Uganda.

    Odugbemi, a three-time lead judge of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, was also jury’s chair of last year edition when he headlined the festival’s international guests along with Nollywood star actress Patience Ozokwo.

    At that time, the organisers of the festival, the Uganda Communication Commission, through its Executive Director Mr Godfrey Mutabazi, wrote a glowing tribute stating that Odugbemi’s “professionalism and commitment displayed during the task, together with the quality of decisions made contributed highly to the resounding success of the UFF 2014.”

    It was no surprise, therefore, that Odugbemi was invited once again to chair the jury along with distinguished international members, including a professor of Literature at Makerere University, Kampala, Dr Sister Dominic Dipio; an German film curator MsBarbel Mauch; President of the East Africa Film Network, Mr Leonce Ngabo of Burundi and pioneer Ugandan TV Producer, Faustin Misanvu.

    The Uganda Film Festival, in its third outing, showcased films of Uganda filmmakers and other East African countries, including Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda. The festival also featured exhibitions, a film market, training workshops and master classes. The final day of the festival was capped with an elaborate gala evening of glamorous red-carpet and awards in various categories.

    Speaking at the gala awards, Odugbemi revealed that the jury began work over three months ago with over 130 entries into the 2015 UFF. The pre-selection process for the competitive categories was electronically conducted over the course of 60 days and five nominees per category were identified and announced by the organisers in the first week of August.

    The jury then reconvened in Kampala from August 24 to 27 to select the winners. While congratulating the winners, Odugbemi expressed delight at the remarkable progress in the talent and technical quality of the nominated works, especially in the areas of storytelling, casting, performance, visual aesthetics, cinematic values, sound and music.

    While calling for more efforts in the areas of additional dialogue recording (ADR), sound design, music score and final mix, he noted that there has been an improved in the quality of sound, which was usually a weakness of some films in the past..

    The celebrated winner of the festival was the feature film Joseph Ken’s House Arrest which carted prizes for Best Feature Film, Best Sound, Best Screenplay and Best Actress. Other winners of UFF 2015, included Boda Boda Thieves, which won the Best Cinematography and Best Editing prizes; Walk With Me by Peter Muhumuza and Johan Oetitinger which won Best Short Film; Matovu Francis’s Chimp-Boda which won Best Animation and “HALF A DOLLAR” by Oris Ssebowa which won the Best Documentary prize.
