  • Oyerinde: Edo CJ orders accelerated trial of suspects

    The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, has ordered the accelerated trial of suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Principal Private Secretary to former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde.

    Comrade Oyerinde was shot dead in 2012 at his Benin City residence by unknown gunmen.

    In a bid to unravel his killers, the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigerian Police paraded two different gangs as being responsible for the killing.

    Suspects paraded by the police were – Garba Usman Maisamari, Danjuma Musa, Muritala Usman, Auta Umaru Ali and Moses Asamah Okoro, while the DSS paraded Mohammed Ibrahim Abdullahi, Raymond Onajite Origbo and Edeh Chikezie as suspects in the murder.

    Justice Idahosa gave the order for the accelerated trial when one of the suspects, Danjuma Musa, was found with abdominal infection.

    The CJ, who will retire on January 25, said only the court could pronounce guilty verdict on suspects.

    Justice Idahosa spoke when he visited the Oko Security prison as part of his farewell visits to prisons.

    He granted clemency to seven inmates who have been in prison for between seven and 10 years without trial.

    Obaseki restates commitment to create 200,000 jobs

    The new governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki has promised to fulfill his campaign promise of creating 200,000 jobs in the state within the next four years.

    The governor made the remarks shortly after taking oath of office administered by the Chief Judge of Edo state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa at the Dr Samuel Ogbemudia stadium Benin City.

    Obaseki who extolled the achievements of former governor Adams Oshiomhole added that; “I’m honored to be succeeding a true friend and I will always uphold your trust. I will resolve to build your legacy.”

    In his speech with witnessed huge applause from the crowd, Obaseki promised to attract industries and aide small businesses for Edo people in order to produce goods and services

    He added, “Edo state belongs to all of us no matter our political parties. Let’s integrate our ideas with diligence and focus on investing on preventive medicine as it is better to prevent than cure.”

    On Education, the governor said, “We will thrive to improve the quality of our schools by introducing ICT and broadband into our schools.”

    On infrastructure, Obaseki promised to continue to consolidate on the infrastructural development which Comrade Oshiomhole started, saying; “We will focus on completing all on-going projects.”

    Edo state: Obaseki, Shaibu sworn into office

    Mr. Godwin Obaseki, winner of the September 28 governorship election, has been sworn-in as the Governor of Edo State.

    Obaseki took oath of office at about 12:45pm administered by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

    He was accompanied by his wife, Betsy.

    Earlier, Philip Shaibu was sworn-in as the Deputy Governor of the state.

    Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole personally drove his Jeep into the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, venue of the even.

    Obaseki: Oshiomhole hands-over Friday

    Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will on Friday hand-over power to the Governor-elect, Mr Godwin Obaseki.

    Obaseki and his Deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu will, however, be sworn-in on Saturday at the Dr Samuel Ogbemudia stadium by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

    Speaking at the inauguration of the  Edo University, Iyamho, Oshiomhole confirmed he will hand over on Friday.

    He said God has answered his prayers to finish well and to finish strong.

    Several flagship projects of the Oshiomhole administration including the new 200-bed Central Hospital, 6-lane Siluko road; Samuel Ogbemudia College, reclaimed Queen Edo gully erosion site, the Ugbegun-Ujiogba-Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi road, Edo University, Iyamho, Second East Circular road and schools have been inaugurated since on Monday.

    Obaseki polled 319,483 votes to defeat Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party who got 253,173 votes.

  • Edo CJ frees fowl thief

    A man who specialized in stealing fowl, Clement Omonoye, who is awaiting trial at the Benin Central Prison, has regained freedom.

    Omonoye, who was diagnosed of ulcer, was released because of his health condition by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Cromwell Idahosa.
    He was among eight inmates freed by the CJ at the Benin Central Prison.

    Others who were freed included Ufuoma Peter, Lucky Edafe, Blessing Joel, Jennifer Lucky and Phillips Kings.

    Justice Idahosa urged prisons authorities to be abreast of the new administration of Criminal Justice Act and its impact on administration of justice in the country.

    He warned them to be proactive, saying “it would be no longer be business as usual.”
