Madugu defends  picking Oshoala, Okafor for WAFCON 2025

Coach  Justin Madugu has stressed that Asisat Oshoala had always been an integral part of the Super falcons despite missing  the  team’s last set of friendly games.

Madugu said Oshoala was called up for the 13th  Women’s African Cup of Nations fixed for Morocco because her talent has never been in doubt and was away from the team’s recent games because of her inability to secure her permit.

Shedding light on key decisions surrounding the team’s composition , Madugu   defended the exclusion of forward Monday Gift, the return of Asisat Oshoala, and the inclusion of several debutants.

Speaking during a media parley before the team’s departure for their final preparation camp, Madugu emphasized the strategic approach behind his 24-woman squad selection.

Madugu said he has selected a blend of young and experienced players to cater for the present and future of the team and to ensure Nigeria have enough talents to call on at the WAFCON in Morocco.

“When you’re preparing a team for a tournament, you must consider the short, medium, and long-term objectives,” Madugu stated. “That’s why we’ve blended experienced players with younger ones. The senior players are expected to guide the newcomers, transferring knowledge and experience as they grow into the team.”

On the return of star striker Oshoala, who has missed recent national team outings, Madugu clarified that her absence was not due to attitude or performance.

“It’s not that we didn’t want her or that she wasn’t willing to play. There were permit issues that prevented her from joining us. Asisat brings a lot to the table, and we’re confident she still has much to offer Nigeria,” he noted.

One of the most discussed omissions was that of attacker Monday Gift. Madugu described the decision as difficult but necessary.

“These players are all national assets. Leaving anyone out is painful. However, CAF regulations limit the number of players we can take,” he explained. “We carried out detailed analysis across all positions—assessing strengths, weaknesses, and flexibility. It’s not just Gift; there were others we would have loved to include too.”

Also turning heads was the surprise call-up of Choma Okafor from the University of Connecticut. Madugu described her as a calculated addition to the squad.

“We’ve been monitoring her closely through match footage and analysis. Players like her can be surprise packages—unknown to opponents and useful tactically. She has potential, and we believe she will contribute positively,” he said.

With 11 WAFCON debutants in the squad, Madugu acknowledged comparisons to past Nigerian coaches who led similar transitions and achieved success. He reaffirmed his confidence in the team’s readiness and his aim to deliver a record-extending 10th title.

“We’re fully aware of our mission—‘La Decima’ or as popularly called here, ‘Mission X’. That’s the goal: to win our 10th  WAFCON title and bring it back home,” he declared. “This isn’t just about us as a team; it’s also a statement for indigenous coaches. A strong performance could open more doors for local coaches in the future.”

Amid high expectations, Madugu insists he is staying grounded and focused.

“I’m not distracted by anything. We remain focused on the task ahead. Stories will fly, distractions will come, but we won’t let them derail us.”

The Super Falcons, nine-time champions of the tournament, will begin their quest for a historic 10th title when the 2025 WAFCON kicks off in Morocco next month.

Madugu vows to pick  only ‘best players’ for WAFCON

Coach Justin Madugu  has said that only the  very best  players would make the  Super Falcons’ final squad  for next month’s Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, adding it is immaterial if  such players are from  the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership or foreign leagues.

Speaking after  Super Falcons  2-0 win over the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon  on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena  in  Abeokuta, Madugu  disclosed he was yet to get a balanced team  ahead of the WAFCON  hence he would use available friendly matches to have a fair assess of  the players.

“Whether NWFL or overseas player,  the first thing is that they are Nigerians and if they are good enough why not? There is no limitations and whoever that distinguishes self will have the opportunity for future call ups,” Madugu  said.

Despite praising the players   for their gallantry  against  their Cameroonian counterparts, Madugu noted that the Super Falcons is still a work in progress even barely a month before the start of the competition in Morocco.

He continued: “I want to appreciate the players for their gallant effort in the game. For us, we are still a work in progress. We are still trying to put our acts together in our preparation for the WAFCON. I think they did very well but we still have a lot of things to work on.

“We know that games with Cameroon is a friendly game on paper but in reality,  there is the prestige at stake.

“I must confess we would have appreciated the opportunity of playing more games so that we can put to test our philosophy and strategies to adopt in the WAFCON.

“It could also have given us the opportunity of giving other players chances to see what they can offer before determining the squad to take to Morocco for the WAFCON.”

He explained further  that the Super Falcons  who would be gunning for  their  10th  WAFCON title in Morocco, must  be ready to play enterprising and entertaining football along with good results.

“I want the girls play and enjoy their football along with going for the 10th  title which I know is very possible,” he added.

Madugu to recall Oshoala soon to Super Falcons

Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu has said Asisat Oshoala will soon return to the team after she was overlooked for Saturday’s high-profile friendly against France.

Madugu explained that multiple CAF Player of the Year Oshoala was not called up for the France game because her travel documents are being processed.

“Asisat Oshoala remains an integral part of the Super Falcons and an invaluable player in our squad,” Madugu said. “Her absence is purely due to logistical reasons, not a reflection of her talent or importance to the team. Unfortunately, her visa and work permit expired, and she is in the process of renewing them. Until those are finalized, she is unable to join us for the friendly against France.”

The coach added: “Asisat’s contribution to the team is immense, and we look forward to welcoming her back once her situation is sorted.

“Her absence for this match is solely due to the documentation challenges, not because of her ability or standing in the team.”

The Super Falcons will face France at the Stade Raymond Kopa in Angers Saturday.

Falcons’ fine form against Algeria excites Madugu

The interim coach of the Super Falcons, Justin Madugu, believes his wards can build upon their   dominant showing in the double header international friendly match against Algeria, noting that their overall performance breeds hope for a stronger Nigerian women team.

He shared his excitement after Tuesday’s 4-1 victory over the Algerian side at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos following their earlier 2-0 win at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne last weekend.

He said: “I must commend the girls for the performance over the two legs, given the circumstances under which we came to play these matches, we had very few sessions, just a few days to assemble, and a lot of them, this is the first time they are coming to the national team, and for them to have performed the way they did, I think they must be appreciated.

“It gives us hope and belief that going forward, we will be able to raise a very strong and solid Super Falcons team for Nigeria.”

Speaking on individual performances and team selection, Madugu noted that the team is ready to face each opponent as they come using the best players available.

“But it’s still a work in progress.

“It’s still a work in progress,” he noted. “We’ll be taking every game as it comes. Look at the opposition. Who are we playing against? What do we intend doing against such opposition?

“Those are some of the things that will determine who and who fits into what we intend doing going forward. “

Meanwhile, Algeria’s Green Ladies coach, Farid Benstiti said the friendly matches against Nigeria was to prepare them and acclimatize ahead of other future international competitions.

He said: “The weather was hot but I think it’s not an excuse because if we are competing against a team like Nigeria, maybe for the World Cup, or for the Olympics, or for the CAF, if we cross them, the weather will be hot, that’s why we have to adapt and to be very strong mentally, to be ready.”
