Ronaldo: Real Madrid better than Juve

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Real Madrid “are stronger” than Juventus and hopes “it’s a tragic” Saturday night for Juventus.

Madrid are considered slight favourites over Juve to win the Champions League Final, and Ronaldo is confident his side will prove they are worthy of such a tag.

“How I see Saturday night going? With [Madrid] raising the cup to the heavens,” the Portuguese told Fox Sports.

“I would take a bad game but see Real win the Champions League. Juventus are an excellent team, it’ll be a balanced clash, but I’m sure Real Madrid are stronger and we only have to prove it.

“I hope it’s a magical night for us and a tragic one for Juventus.”

Juventus defensive masterclass dumps Barcelona out of the Champions League

An expert defensive performance – from back to front – was enough frustrate Barcelona and send Juventus into the Champions League last four.

Though Barcelona had plenty of the ball, they only created two proper chances over the course of 90 minutes, and could have no complaints that they were not beaten by the better team.

Juventus actually started the brighter, unwilling to allow their hosts time in possession and first to loose and second balls.

Eventually, though Barcelona took over with Neymar particularly influential.

Unusually, Lionel Messi was quiet, but then on 19 minutes he spread play wide to Jordi Alba and continued into the box, except when the cross came over, he drilled wide from eight yards.

That was as good as it got for the home side, who became increasingly tetchy as the night developed. Juvem meanwhile, could count on Giorgio Chiellini, the best player on the pitch, and Leonardo Bonucci, while Juan Cuadrado and Mario Mandzukic gave excellent support to Dani Alves and Alex Sandro.

Perhaps the most significant compliment one might pay Juventus is that the game, a Champions League quarter-final second leg, at Camp Nou, was a complete non-event.

Never did they panic; never were they even flustered. It is true that Sami Khedira picked up a booking, so will miss the first leg of the semi, but otherwise, it was another perfect night for the Old Lady.

    TALKING POINT

Can Juventus win the Champions League? They will certainly be asked more questions by Monaco and Real Madrid, who attack with greater fluency than Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid defend at least as well. Which is to say that of the remaining four clubs, they are the outsiders – but none of the other three will relish playing them.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus) A more or less perfect defensive display, giving away very little to some of the best players in the world and whose commanding presence inspired his teammates.

    KEY STAT

Tonight was the first time under Luis Enrique that Barcelona have failed to win a Champions League home game

In ten Champions League games so far this season, Juventus have conceded just two goals.

    PLAYER RATINGS

    Barcelona: Ter Stegen 6, Sergi Roberto 6, Pique 6, Umtiti 6, Jordi Alba 6, Busquets 5, Rakitic 5, Iniesta 4, Messi 5, Suarez 4, Neymar 7. Subs: Alcacer 5, Mascherano 5.

    Juventus: Buffon 6, Dani Alves 7, Bonucci 8, Chiellini 9, Alex Sandro 6, Khedira 8, Pjanic 6, Cuadrado 7, Dybala 6, Mandzukic 6, Higuain 5. Subs: Barzagli 6, Lemina 6, Asamoah 6.

    KEY MOMENTS

15 – Lovely ball from Pjanic setting Cuadrado away down the right and Dybala’s in the middle, but Pique slides in to block superbly. Immediately, Barca break with Neymar, and the move ends with Rakitic’s shot from the edge of the box which flies over.

18’ – We’ve seen this before! For the first time, Messi finds himself in space outside the box and lifts a pass into it for Jordi Alba. On the slide, he can’t quite arrive in time, shinning over the bar.

19’ – Barca have taken over these last few minutes, and here’s Messi! He spreads wide to Alba, makes his way into the box, and when the ball does too, Suarez tees him up … except, arriving onto it, he drags wide from eight yards!

49’ – Dybala robs Iniesta and finds Higuain, who slides right for Cuardrado … his low drive scuttles just wide, though he insists it’s a corner not the goalkick which is what’s given. Ter Stegen might’ve got a touch, but I’d say not.

56’ – Lovely from Rakitic, snapping a square pass to Messi from out on the right. Messi takes it beautifully too, moving it into his stride to shoot from 20. But Chiellini stretches every fibre of his being to narrow the angle, and the low left-footed curler is accordingly a foot wide of the far stick.

67’ – Barca win a corner, Buffon comes, misses, and Suarez clips the loose ball back for Messi! But it’s a little high and on his right foot, so though he leaps well, he can only guide yet another shot off target.

80’ – Chance for Barca! Clip over the top from Neymar, and there’s Mascherano in the six-yard box, without a goal in 300-odd appearances for the club, getting a feather when all it needed was a tickle! Dear oh dear.

Juve pulls clear as Torino also win

Juventus pulled 10 points clear of Serie A title rivals Roma with a convincing 3-1 victory over AC Milan, while Torino beat Hellas Verona.

Despite their inconsistent form, the Rossoneri certainly have the potential to match Juve and so the league leaders made sure to put them in their place early on through a goal from Carlos Tevez.

Recent signing Luca Antonelli pegged the reigning champions back ever so briefly but Leonardo Bonucci’s strike gave Juve the confidence to push on and consolidate the win through Alvaro Morata.

Earlier on Saturday, Torino reached seventh place by beating Hellas Verona, also by a 3-1 scoreline.

Giampiero Ventura’s men made it four wins from four as Josef Martinez, Fabio Quagliarella and substitute Omar El Kaddouri kept Verona at arm’s length in their own Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.

Luca Toni’s late goal gave Verona hope they could force the draw, but El Kaddouri’s last-gasp strike ensured they remained in 14th place and only six points clear of the relegation zone.

Rugani: ‘Honoured to be at Juve’

Empoli defender Daniele Rugani says he is ‘honoured’ to have been bought outright by Juventus.

It was announced yesterday that the Bianconeri had bought out the Tuscan club’s half of the co-ownership deal the clubs had on the player, and Rugani has spoken of his pride.

“I feel strong emotion, I’m honoured by this recognition,” the 20-year-old told Tuttosport.

“I will always keep that feeling in my heart, and it will give me the boost I need. It’s a feeling of pride and satisfaction, as well as joy because I’ve been a Juventino since I was a kid.

“However, now I have to stay focused on the present: staying up with Empoli, and the European Under-21 Championships.

I’ve still got everything to prove, starting with showing that Juve weren’t wrong to take up their option to buy me.”

Rugani came up through the Old Lady’s youth teams, and had already trained with the first team a few times before moving to Empoli, and the defender believes that was invaluable.

“It’s a great memory, I took inspiration from all of them, because they’re all champions.

“Of course, I looked toward the defenders more: [Giorgio] Chiellini for the way to mark, [Leonardo] Bonucci for how to set yourself, and [Andrea] Barzagli for concentration.”

  • Juve set to sell Pogba

    Juve set to sell Pogba

Chelsea have been alerted to reports that Juventus are ready to cash in on key midfielder Paul Pogba this summer.

The Blues are known to be very keen on Pogba and it looks as though they could be in with a chance of striking a deal after reports in Italy claimed that Juve are now ready to sell.

Juve are keen to add fresh talent to their squad and although they would like to keep Pogba and Arturo Vidal in their ranks, they may have to cash in on one of them, or maybe even both.

If Pogba does become available then Chelsea will make a move, but they will also face strong competition from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, along with both Manchester clubs.

Jose Mourinho has already been busy when adding Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa to his ranks, but reports claim the money has also been set aside to swoop for Pogba should he become available.

  • Juve sign Sturaro

    Juve sign Sturaro

Juventus have signed Genoa midfielder Stefano Sturaro and loaned him immediately back to their Serie A rivals for next season.

Sturaro has agreed a five-year contract with the defending Serie A champions after the two clubs agreed a €5.5 million transfer.

With competition for places high at Juventus Stadium, the club have opted to leave Sturaro with Genoa for the 2014-15 campaign, enabling him to continue his development before linking up with Antonio Conte’s squad.

A statement from Juve read: “Juventus announces that the agreement with Genoa for the definitive acquisition of the registration rights of Stefano Sturaro has been finalised.

“The contract includes the payment by Juventus of €5.5m over three years.

“The purchase value may increase by a further €3.5m depending on performances during the contract from 2015-16.”

Sturaro made 16 appearances for Genoa last term, having risen through the youth system at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The 21-year-old had a loan spell at Serie B outfit Modena in the previous campaign.
