His allegations have sparked reactions, raising concerns about the credibility of reality show prize disbursements in Nigeria.

“I came outside of the Nigerian Idol platform with zero naira in my account. As Nigerian Idol winner, I go waka all through Lagos, go for interviews without food for belle despite winning N7.5 million.

“They announced that I had won N7.5 million. When I asked about the prize, they said they are still branding the car. What they announced on national TV be say I won N7.5 million with a brand new car and I’m supposed to have a two week trip to Dubai. I go through hell after winning the show”, he said.

Anchored by ravishing hostess, Tush B the show kicked off with David Morris singing ‘The Greatest Love Of All’ inspiring the audience to ponder on God’s love for humanity. He ended with ‘Amata.’

As the concert wore on, Hathanda, a guitarist took the second season of the AR concert to another level. The highlight was when a Lagos State University (LASU) 300- level undergraduate, Biodun Haruna, serenaded the audience with a retinue of Apala songs by the late Apala king, Haruna Ishola.

Flugelhorn player, Kwitee and Nigeria Idols winner,  K-Peace mounted the stage one after the other to sing their songs. • I once hawked in traffic, says Nigerian Idol 5 winner, K-Peace

I once hawked in traffic, says Nigerian Idol 5 winner, K-Peace

Winner of Nigerian Idol Season 5, Olakunle Ogunrombi, aka K-Peace has made some revelations about his humble beginning, saying his life was once like that of a person living in the ‘wilderness’..

The Ogun State-born singer revealed that he once hawked edibles like Gala, pure water and soft drinks in the traffic after the death of his father.

He could not thank the organizers of Nigerian Idol enough, for the music contest that changed the story of his life as winner of the coveted prize of N7.5 million, an all-expense paid trip to Dubai, a Hyundai Sports Utility Vehicle and a N7.5 million recording deal with South Africa-based Universal Music label among other largesse.

“I come from a family of five children and we were well-catered for. My father was an engineer with Leventis Motors at one time, but he lost his job and later tried his hands at trading in motor parts. We eventually lost him to cardiac arrest. That marked the beginning of many difficult years for every one of us, including our mother whose duty it was to provide for us,” said the 32-year-old who took the competition by storm with a unique genre of music; the FujiRnB which he calls a fusion of contemporary and Fuji music.

“At that time, I covered Mile 2 to Maza-Maza and Alakija, selling Chin-chin. I later sold Gala, Pure water and soft drinks around the “Chopping Centre” neighbourhood of Festac Town,” he said.

K-Peace had started out sealing and supplying Chin-Chin to some roadside traders, but opted to go into direct selling when he realised he would make more money doing so.

Prior to this, he had worked as a casual worker in a factory at Maza-Maza where he worked daily from 7 am to 5 pm for a paltry sum of N120.00 with an option of overtime at N30.00 per day. He was on that job for a year before switching to roadside trading.

All that had changed on coming to the show, but his glorious triumph and the attendant rewards, monetary and non-monetary will obviously boost his finances and music career.

During the show, K-Peace repeatedly shone like the star that he is today. He was a leading light among the final top 12 contestants and he left no one in doubt about his music qualities and, more so, his rating as a top contender for the top prize throughout the seven weeks that the spotlight was cast on them.

K-Peace wins Nigerian Idol Season 5

Kunle Ogunrombi, also known as K-Peace, on Saturday, emerged winner of the Etisalat-sponsored Nigerian Idol Season 5. K-Peace beat Dolu, his final rival, to cart home a brand new SUV, cash prize of N7.5 million and a mouth-watering recording deal with Universal Music Company at the shimmering grand finale show which held at Dream Studio, Omole Phase 1, Lagos.

From thousands of people that auditioned in Benin, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan and Lagos five months ago, the contestants were whittled initially to 100 and finally 12, before K-Peace and Dolu became the final two contestants remaining in the music talent reality show.

K-Peace, 32, who won the hearts of the judges, studio audience and national audience with his fusion of Fuji in some of the songs was declared winner after performing the chartbuster, Ace, by Sir Shina Peters, for which he received a standing ovation and accolades from all.

Upon being announced as winner following voting results being collated by Alexander Forbes, K-Peace’s mother, wife and daughter were exhilarated. His mother, Funmilayo, overwhelmed with gratitude, muttered repeatedly, “Thank you Jesus.”

An ecstatic K-Peace who shed tears of joy said that he was shocked at being crowned the winner of the competition.

“I am overwhelmed getting to this stage today because I faced tougher and amazing talents, especially Dolu,” he said. “I thank the sponsors of this competition for giving me the opportunity to pursue my dream.”

Chief Marketing Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Francesco Angelone, said the company recognised Nigerian Idol as a veritable platform to identify, nurture and celebrate young talented Nigerians.

“Etisalat is living up to its reputation as a lifestyle brand that is passionate about the youth and Nigerian Idol is one of our platforms to celebrate the Nigerian youths,” Angelone said. “This season, all the contestants have been amazing in their individual right and K-Peace particularly has been outstanding from the audition stage and we are glad that the voting public has crowned a winner deserving of his crown.”

The highlight of the finale was the energetic performance of the Nigerian-French singer, Asa who lit up the stage and dazzled guests with hit songs from her current album, Bed of Stone. One of the judges, Darey Art Alade also performed his songs while comedian Acapella, kept the audience cracking their ribs.

The show’s first runner-up, Dolu received a cash prize of N1.5 million and a brand new Hyundai car, while the second runner-up Nex2 got N1 million.

Since 2010, Etisalat-Sponsored Nigeria Idol has discovered some of Nigeria’s talented artistes including Yeka Onka (2011), Mercy Chinwo (2012), Moses Adigwe (2013) and Evelle Zibilli (2014), all of whom have regularly graced numerous entertainment and musical events nationwide.

  • Nods for K-Peace, Nex2, Preye on Nigerian Idol 5

Nods for K-Peace, Nex2, Preye on Nigerian Idol 5

As the ongoing Nigerian Idol 5 inches towards climax, what looks like the possible winners is beginning to be evident, going by the performances of some of the contestants.

After the most-aided contestant, Sther, was eventually evicted last week, the remaining five candidates on the show played a game of supremacy, each singing two Nigerian hits, to impress the audience and judges.

But it appears K-Peace was the most favoured on the night, singing Shake body by Skales. That performance further stamped him as the people’s favourite. Having picked up the tempo from where Dolu left off, he put up an electrifying and sensational show that got him a standing ovation from Darey and others.

“I can watch him all night. He looks like a true performer, let’s be honest. The song is not exactly vocally challenging, but he showed the ability to carry the audience along and get response from them because he is a performer,” said Mannie, a guest judge on the show.

The night had started on a low key, as Classiq Tunez and Preye failed to deliver on their renditions of Wizkid’s Show me the money and Johnny by Yemi Alade respectively.

Mannie, an on-air-personality with Cool FM, believed that Classiq Tunez struggled with his pitch while Preye, on the other hand, produced a somewhat interesting performance, but did not light up the stage with the appropriate energetic dance required to match the theme of the song.

Dolu showed a different stuff when she performed Tiwa Savage’s Wanted. “After all the struggles, it’s nice to see you come of age. You are beginning to own the stage, oozing confidence,” said Darey.

Nex2’s performance of Davido’s Gobe was a reflection of the typical energetic performance he appears to have made his own on the show.

In the second round of performance, Classiq Tunez, like his first show, failed to hit the form that has endeared him to his fans on the show. His delivery of Wizkid’s Back to the Matter was adjudged flat, as it did not resonate with the audience and judges who were unimpressed with a telling puckered brow. As a result of that, Mannie advised him to avoid songs by Wizkid while Dede, echoing same sentiments with Darey, noted it was worse than the previous one.

“For today, I am sorry, my brother, your second outing was worse than your first,” he noted.

The other four contestants gave good accounts of themselves, but the duo of Preye and Nex2 produced the two best performances of the second half.

Preye’s rendition of Kcee’s Limpopo was enough to make up for the obvious gaps noticeable in her first half showing. She may not rank among the Show’s great dancers, but she did enough to provoke a standing ovation from the four judges.

Nex2 posted his best performance ever on the show when he took to the stage to perform Timi Dakolo’s Iyawo Mi. It was one performance that etched itself in many minds with the accompaniment of theatrics.

The show, which focuses on discovering Nigerian youths with talent in music and giving them a unique platform to take shots at stardom, is staking a whooping N7.5 million cash reward for the would-be winner. The cash prize is complemented with a brand new SUV, a recording deal worth N7.5 million with South-Africa’s Universal Music label and some high-end devices.

Nigerian Idol season 5 is sponsored by Etisalat Nigeria, Payporte, Cool Fm, Tantalizers, Cadbury Nigeria, Zaron, Dabur Toothpaste, So-Klin, ORS and Ellis Suites.
