Kaba Diawara: We’re aiming not just to out play Senegal, but to beat them

Guinea coach Kaba Diawara revelled in Friday’s 1-0 CAF Africa Cup of Nations victory over Gambia, calling it revenge for their 2021 defeat. Mohamed Bayo’s goal gave Guinea a key win in Group C after losing to the same opponents at the 2021 finals.

“This victory is payback for that previous loss which was so hard to take,” Diawara told reporters.

“Winning is more important because it shows we’ve improved over two years and worked hard to get better.”

The former Guinea international felt the performance highlighted their progress despite some first-half struggles.

“What didn’t go well early on was our lack of efficiency, but after changes, things improved,” analysed Diawara.

“Creating chances is the hard part, now we just need to finish them off, and that will come in time.”

Diawara described their upcoming clash with Senegal as “the group final”, emphasising his lofty ambitions.

“Facing Senegal will be the group’s biggest game and we’re aiming to beat the champions, not just play them,” he insisted.

The coach added: “With four points already, we’re targeting top spot and trying to qualify in first place from the group.”

After gaining revenge on Gambia, Diawara’s buoyant Guinea side now believe they can dethrone Senegal in Tuesday’s west African derby.

in the same vein, Guinea match winner Aguibou Camara praised Diawara’s inspirational words after their win over Gambia.

The 22-year-old Olympiacos midfielder scored the only goal on Friday to be named man of the match.

“I dedicate this award to my late father,” said Camara post-match. “I’ll keep working hard; I’m at this level thanks to my family’s help.”

Camara also highlighted Diawara’s motivational impact on the squad during games.

“Kaba is a coach who pushes us to work. In the changing room he speaks to us and motivates us a lot during matches,” explained Camara.

The goals corer emphasised he is happy to play wherever required for the team.

“I’m a professional and must remain available to the team. When I play wide, I have to perform,” stated Camara.

“It’s not me who chooses my position; I just make myself available to help the Guinean team.”

After a perfect match where he shone in an advanced midfield role, Camara revealed the inspiration behind his display.

Diawara’s rousing team talks clearly struck a chord as Guinea claimed a vital victory over Gambia.

The young star will hope to have more of an impact in Tuesday’s huge Group C clash with reigning champions Senegal.
