  • Why Osinbajo’s chopper crash-landed, by AIB report

THE Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) yesterday released the report of the helicopter crash involving Agusta Westland W 139 Caverton Helicopters, which flew Vice President to Kabba in Kogi State.

It attributed the February 2, 2019, crash of the chopper marked with registration number 5N – CML to effects of a brownout generated during its landing in a dry dusty environment.

It said Caverton should have carried out risk assessment test at the Kaaba Stadium before the flight.

Brown out in aviation parlance means a condition generated during landing in a sandy and dusty environment.

The chopper accident operated by Caverton Helicopter occurred at Kaaba Stadium in Kogi State. It flew Osinbajo, his entourage and three crew members.

The chopper was manufactured in 2012.

AIB Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Akin Olateru , at a media briefing at its headquarters at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said though the investigation into the crash is ongoing, it has , however, issued two safety recommendations to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the operator, Caverton Helicopters Limited.

Olateru said the NCAA should issue advisory circular to helicopter operators on the effects of brown out and how to mitigate its effects.

The second safety recommendation, Olateru said, is for Caverton Helicopters to carry out proper risk analysis and assessment before operating flights into unapproved landing pad.

He said the final report on the accident will be released in few months.

Bello lauds FG over Geregu power plant

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has commended the Federal Government and other stakeholders for the completion of three turbines power generation at Geregu Power Plant in the state.

Bello gave the commendation at the 22nd Power Sector Monthly Meeting with power stakeholders and other participants held at Geregu Power Plc, Ajaokuta on Monday.

The governor expressed his appreciation to the Minister of  Power, Works and Housing, the President and the Vice President for the good job they had been doing in the power sector.

“Today, we are glad that there is a relative improvement in the power generation and transmission across Nigeria, especially in Kogi.

“The Federal Government has virtually solved all the power problems but we need a little patience to identify the communities which do not have electricity in Kogi to install the required transformers.

“I want to encourage investors to make enough investment in power distribution so that various communities at the grassroots in Kogi and Nigeria at large can begin to enjoy the benefits.

“When we assumed office, we met a dispute regarding Kabba Power Transmission substation, but we immediately waded in and resolved the issues for the work to be completed.”

The governor said that the state government had made efforts to reduce cases of reported and unreported kidnapping and armed robbery cases in the state.

“Without adequate security, the power plant here will not be safe and we will not be talking about generation, transmission or distribution.

“We have been supporting and equipping our security agencies to ensure that the contractors and their workers working on the roads are safe and secure,” he said.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola said that the power production had reached an all-time high of over 7,000 megawatts in the nation.

According to him, the ministry in collaboration with all the stakeholders has created a safe and more conducive environment to gain the confidence of investors in the power sector.

“On December 8, we reached an all-time power production of 7,000 and a great peak supply of 5,155 Megawatts, which Nigeria has never produced or generated that much power into the grid.

“The last supply was 5074 MW in January 2016, after which we went into a season of disruption of gas supply by militants.

“It means that our policies and programmes are working, and we are also now able to evacuate substantially all of that power by transmission,” he said.

Fashola expressed his gratitude to the government for paying the compensation that was militating against the development of the Kabba Transmission Sub-station.

Mr Adeyemi Adenuga, the Managing Director, Generation, Geregu Power Plant, said that the plant was handed over to private company on Oct. 1, 2013.

Adenuga said that the new owners had invested about 94 million dollars into the plant to bring it the present state.

“Right now, we can successfully run three units (turbines) comfortably, effectively and efficiently. So, we hope that from this meeting, we will get the needed loads for our machine,” Adenuga said.

Mr Otayitie Eminefo, the Special Adviser on Energy and Power to the governor, applauded the minister and stakeholders for their visit to the state.

He appealed to stakeholders to give priority to electrification projects in the state.

•Bello sent thugs after me, says senator

Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) was, at the weekend, attacked in Kabba, Kogi State, during the Kabba Day celebration.

After speaking and donating N3 million, the senator was about to enter his vehicle when thugs attacked him.

The embattled senator, who is trying to stave off a recall, was pelted with stones, sachet water and other objects. Some  thugs were arrested; tear gas was used to control the situation.

Governor Yahaya Bello, who was billed to attend the event, allegedly returned to Lokoja when he got the situation report.

A source said Melaye’s loyalists could have caused further crisis, had the governor made it to the event.

Melaye alleged that his attackers were sent by the government, according to a statement by his aide.

“Two of the boys who attacked him were sent by the Kogi State government, but were arrested by the police. They were later granted bail following intervention of the state apparatus,” the statement said.

But the governor said he took a proactive step to avert impending chaos.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Petra Onyegbule, said Bello’s absence at the event was to avert chaos.

The statement reads: “The alleged attack on Dino Melaye, by some aggrieved Kogi West youths, would have been worsened if the governor was present at the event. As the father of the state, the governor decided to stay off to avert further violence.

“As the chief security officer of the state, the governor is committed to ensuring that the task of safeguarding the citizens is never compromised.”

Police spokesman William Ayah said the event should not be overflogged.

According to him, the two persons were arrested “to save their lives” because they were to be mobbed by some youths who wanted to have a share of the money they got.

He, however, said those arrested were released.

  • Redeeming Kabba/Bunu from feudal lords

A greet fellow Nigerians on our nation’s 57th Independence anniversary. I, particularly, praise the good people of Kabba/Bunu Constituency for believing in the Nigerian project. While our nation is referred to as Giant of Africa, we are celebrating this anniversary as a toddler with elephantiasis.

It is instructive here to state that Africa, before the 15th century, was civilised. The Europeans, however, navigated Africa and enslaved our forebears, destroying our history and every other civilisation we had. Aeons after the slave trade ended, Africa would be colonised by the same West that enslaved us. African countries, except Ethiopia and Liberia, got their independence when the imperialists felt Africans were lettered enough to be given the right to self rule.

Fifty-seven years after Nigeria got its independence, it is still very apparent that we are still far from our dream land. We seem to be slaves, not only to the Westerners who still control our leaders through neocolonialism, but also slaves to ourselves. This is because majority of our leaders are not accountable to us. They care less about welfare of the citizens; they see us all as nonentities yet we run after them to massage their over-bloated egos.

That our nation remains fragile many years after independence shows we have not achieved much in our march to nationhood. From communities in the far East to communities in the core North, there is despair in the land. In Kabba/Bunu Constituency of Kogi State, for instance, there is immediate and urgent need for action and intervention.

George Washington once said: “Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us no choice but a brave resistance or the most abject submission.” Our choice at this crossroad needs to be bold, productive and impactful. We don’t have to remain as slaves anymore. The resistance against bad leadership, abject poverty, and failed government needs to be brave. We must make resolve to conquer our common enemies at the poll or remain their slaves.

Let us, therefore, rely upon the goodness of the cause and the guidance of the Supreme Being, in whose hands victory lies, to animate and encourage us to the great and noble actions we are set to take.

The eyes of all our countrymen are now upon us, and we shall have their blessings and praises if we volunteer ourselves as instruments to save them from the tyranny inflicted against them by the ‘slave masters’.

Let us engage each other to always remember that a free man contending for liberty on his own ground is superior to any submissive mercenary on earth.

To this end, this writer, with all sense of responsibility, hereby vows to reposition participatory democracy and change the fortune constituency of Kabba/Bunu Constituency for irreversible development.

In tandem with where we are coming from, where we are and where we are going (the promise land) as a people, there is an urgent need to rebuild Kabba/Bunu Constituency and free the populace from feudalists.

Now that we are once again at the crossroads, we need to make a tougher but wiser decision of choosing someone who truly understands the plight of the people and not a politician who is interested in enslaving us.

The crop of politicians representing the constituency has left us with underdevelopment, youth unemployment, poor state of schools and roads.  Above all, the insecurity level is alarming in our communities is alarming.

I urge all youths and well-meaning denizens to increase their participation in the political process. We have another opportunity in the next general election to vote a candidate party that will identify with plight of the people, such as quality education, good health and rural and urban integration. I have offered myself to serve our people in achieving these salient objectives.

We must vote for a paradigm shift in our constituency. Only a new thinking is required to reposition our Jerusalem which lies in ruins. The youth must join hand to ensure we have good representation in Kabba/Bunu Constituency.

We have a date with history. We must not let this opportunity to change our story pass by us. The Kabba/Bunu Constituency needs to be recovered from the feudal lords who have been enslaving our people. Happy Independence once again.
