  • Kano spends N100 million on maternal, children free healthcare

    Kano state Government has set aside N100 million for the first round of 2019 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) designed to offer free medical care to thousands of women and children across the state.

    Speaking to reporters on the line up of activities for the programme, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabiru Getso said the programme, which will hold from February 27 to March 3, is one of the ways to carter for the primary and health care needs women and children, particularly those in the rural areas.

    According to him, the programme will be at over 1200 primary and secondary healthcare centres across the state.

    Dr. Getso explained: “It is a week where high impact low cost interventions are offered to pregnant women and children under the age of five with the aim of increasing coverage levels of some important preventive and curative health indicators that allow mothers and children to thrive and develop.

    “It also provides an opportunity to deliver health services for mother, newborn and child through the existing health system most of which are already enshrined in our aged-long free MCH services available at both primary and secondary levels of care.”

    Dr. Getso said the programme will render services such as offering Vitamin A supplementation for children aged six to 59  months, de-worming of children aged 11 to 59 months, immunisation of children under five years and nutritional status screening for children under five years.

    Other services include birth registration for children under five years, antenatal services including malaria prophylaxis for pregnant women child birth spacing services and HIV/AIDS counseling and testing services.

    He further informed the programme will include demonstration of key household practices such as hand washing, personal hygiene, exclusive breast feeding, complimentary feeding and use of long lasting insecticide treated nets, among others.

  • Ganduje tasks parents on immunization for children

    Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has called on parents in the state to ensure full routine immunization for their children.

    The governor gave the charge on Saturday while inaugurating immunization for the month of November at Panshekara Ward in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

    Represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, the governor said there was need for parents to support in sustaining the successes recorded in immunization in the state.

    According to him, “About 3 million children below the age of five are expected to be immunized across the 44 local government areas of the state.”

    He added that the state had recorded over 52 months now without any case of wild polio virus in all the local government areas in the state.

    The governor also stressed the importance of regular environmental hygiene to guard against infectious diseases in the communities.

    Ganduje said his administration has placed high premium on the health sector by provision of infrastructure, financing, human resources, procurements and drugs chain supply system, among others.

    He enjoined the people to continue to rally round the administration for more meaningful achievements in effective health care provision.

    The Chairman Kumbotso Local Government Council, Alhaji Kabiru Panshekara, expressed commitment towards ensuring the success of immunization in the area.

    Kano to propose compulsory HIV Testing bill

    The Kano State Government said on Friday that it had been working to propose a bill on compulsory HIV/AIDS testing for all new couples in the state.

    The Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, disclosed this at a news conference to commemorate the World HIV/AIDS day in Kano.

    He said that the Ganduje administration had taken health as a priority and was working tirelessly to ensure quality healthcare delivery services in the state.
    Dr Getso explained that the state government, in collaboration with the state Hisbah Board, had proposed the bill, which was awaiting passage at the state house of assembly.

    According to him, “The state government had demonstrated concern about the care and control of HIV/AIDS by giving the scourge all the necessary attention it required’’.

    He stressed that the state government established the State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), in order to record the progress and achievements so far witnessed in the control of AIDS in the state.

    “The state has, however, approved the sum of over N443 million to carry out many interventions and outreach services, as well as to create awareness across the state,’’ Getso said.

    The Commissioner said the government would continue to support people living with HIV/AIDS and would continue to create awareness on the prevention of the disease.

    The World Health Organization has declared every December 1st to be World HIV/AIDS Day, to give succour to people living with HIV/AIDS in the state

  • Kano intensifies surveillance after recording cases of lassa fever, CSM

    The Kano state government has strengthened surveillance after recording cases of cerebral spinal meningitis (CSM) and Lassa fever in some local government areas (LGAs), an official said Thursday in Kano.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, told newsmen that this has also led to government taking urgent measures to ensure proper control.

    He said 20 suspected cases of meningitis were reported in eight LGAs, with only four of the cases being confirmed.

    The commissioner listed the LGAs as Dala, Tarauni, Municipal, Tudun Wada, Gwale, Bebeji, Ungogo and Kumbotso.

    Getso further revealed that the state has also recorded two confirmed cases of Lassa fever in Tudun Wada LGA.

    “The state government has therefore intensified efforts to control the situation.

    “In line with this, the state government has approved the sum of N19 million to mount an aggressive response to combat these diseases.”

    He further revealed that the state has reactivated its Rapid Response Team to respond to such cases, adding that drugs and other items were procured for the team.

    “The state government therefore directs all citizens to be vigilant and report cases of intense headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and neck stiffness to the nearest clinics.”

    Getso also stated that help lines have also been opened to control the situation, just as sensitisation to the diseases’ early signs has also commenced in the media.

    He then urged residents to avoid contact with rats by ensuring the safety of their foods as well as observation of the general hygiene of their bodies and environment.
