  • Community replies El-Rufai over relocation threat

The Gonin-Gora community of Chikun local government area of Kaduna State has replied the recent statement credited to Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai where he threatened to demolish and evacuate the community if the youths of the area don’t desist from attacking motorists that ply the route during crisis situations.

It would be recalled that the governor during a Hausa radio program recently threatened to evacuate and relocate Gonin-Gora, a community with well over 300,000 residents if the youths in the area attempt to block Kaduna-Abuja high way and attack innocent travelers.

The alleged threat by the governor generated lots of controversies as to why the governor had to narrow down the threat to only Gonin-Gora community as volatile area at the wake of any crisis in the state and exonerated other volatile communities like Tudun Wada, Mararaban Jos, Rigasa and Kabala West.

Meanwhile, addressing newsmen at the palace of the late Sarkin Gonin Gora on behalf of the leaders and elders of Gonin-Gora and environs, the Sarkin Yaki Gora said, Gonin Gora residents are peaceful adding that, the governor pronouncements is an attempt to give dog a bad name to hang it.

The text of the briefing jointly signed by Alhaji Baba Ali (Dallatun Gonin Gora), John Auta (Ciroman Gonin Gora) Sule Fulani (Wakilin Fulani) and Zakka Auta (Wakilin Atyap) said, “it is unfortunate that while the communal clash was going on at Kasuwan Magani and later spilled over to Kujama, Mararaban Rido and Sabon – Tasha, rumours were already being peddled inside Kaduna and certain areas of the town that killings, mounting of roadblocks and attacks of innocent motorists as well as kidnapping of passersby was going on unabated in Gonin-Gora.

“Indeed, all these false allegations and rumours are not new to the people of Gonin-Gora as this has always been the case whenever trouble is in the offing.

“What transpired in reality is that through-out the violent clash on the 18th October, 2018 at Kasuwan Magani and its subsequent spill-over to places like Kujama, Mararaban Rido and Sabon-Tasha on 20th, 21st and 22nd respectively, Gonin-Gora and its environs remained calm and peaceful.

“It is in the context of these realities that we in Gonin-Gora are baffled and shocked by the reported threats of His Excellency Governor Nasir El-Rufai to demolish and or evacuate the Gonin-Gora settlement on account of violence to and molestation of travelers which, to the best of our knowledge never ever occurred during this crisis.

“We are sure that it is either that the governor has been misinformed or ill-advised by people hell-bent on giving Gonin-Gora a bad and gory name in order to hang it,” he stated.

“Indeed, during this tense period the acting Sarkin Gonin-Gora and his ward heads appealed to the residents, and the youths in particular to remain calm and law-abiding. It remained so until Friday, 26th October, 2018 when news about the killing of Agom Adara started circulating.

“On that fateful day, unknown to the leadership of the Gonin-Gora community, a handful of miscreants around Buwaya out of pure mischief took the law into their hands by mounting a road block immediately after the bye-pass overhead bridge coming from the toll gate from Abuja.

“This happened to be at about the same time that His Excellency, Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his convoy were coming from the direction of Abuja where he encountered many motorists that had been caught up by the twenty-four hour curfew that had been imposed as well as the impromptu blockage mounted by the miscreants.

“On reaching the spot with his convoy and other motorists trailing behind him, the governor stopped and ordered the police to dismantle it to allow the motorists pass into Kaduna town.

“The leadership of Gonin- Gora community wishes to restate the community’s resolve to promote peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and inter- faith solidarity not only within the Gonin-Gora settlement and environs but with all our neighboring settlements.

“Our leaders will continue with our proactive interventions in educating our youths and all other members of our community on the primacy of the maintenance of peace, compliance with lawful orders and the pursuit of cordial inter-communal and inter-faith,” the community said.

“The 93 suspects are from different divides and from across borders.”

  • El-Rufai’s policies responsible for Kaduna crisis, says NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that “the cruel and reckless socio-economic policies of Kaduna State Government” should be blamed for the current crisis in the state and asked the government to immediately respite all security measures put in place by the Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi government to ensure peaceful coexistence across the state.

President of the Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said in a statement made available to newsmen that the failure of the government to take pre-emptive security measures when the crisis first broke out at Kasua Magani represents leadership failure on the part of the El-Rufai government in the state.

Wabba said the Kaduna crisis is not just a painful  reminder of a relatively distant past, but a sad  commentary on the state of our communal relations exacerbated.

The statement reads: “We at the Nigeria Labour Congress wish to lend our voice to those who have condemned the violent conflicts in Kaduna and it’s environs.

“These violent conflicts have led to multiple deaths officially put at 55 at Kasuwan Magaini,  22 in Kaduna metropolis and an unspecified number in other unnamed settlements.

“Almost a week after the violent conflict erupted over an issue as trivial as a dispute over the correct measure of grains of maize in the market place, it is yet to abate as reports say today there are fresh attacks and reprisals.

“The Kaduna crisis is not just a painful reminder of a relatively distant past we were better off without,  it is a sad  commentary on the state of our communal relations exacerbated by cruel and reckless socio-economic policies of the Kaduna State Government.

“It similarly represents leadership failure in the state as certain pre-emptive security measures  ought to have been put in place in Kaduna metropolis when this conflict started at Kasuwan Magaini.

“The root causes of these conflicts must be addressed and perpetrators brought to justice.  We believe human life still remains sacred in spite of our degeneration into a non-society,” NLC said.

That congress also said “It is equally important for the Kaduna State Government to restore the security measures put in place by the Government of Makarfi which ensured peace and security in the state for over ten years.

“Kaduna State cannot afford to continue to live on the edge of the knife.  The implications are enormous not just for Kaduna but the whole country. Our sympathy and condolences go to those who have lost their properties or loved ones,” NLC said.

“Let us unite against every criminal activity. Let us stand together as human beings who have a right to live in peace,” he said.

One of the traders on Lagos Street, Mr Sunday Emeka said most Igbo traders were still not comfortable with the situation and would not want to endanger their lives.

  • Kaduna Crisis: 22 people killed, 44 injured – El-Rufai

    …as ACF condemns crisis

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has disclosed that 22 people lost their lives during the Sunday crisis that rocked Kaduna metropolis while 44 others sustained injuries and several properties damaged within the city.

This was as the Governor vowed to enforce the various existing laws that impose costs on communities that permit violence in their midst, in order to stem the intermittent crises in Kaduna state.

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned the crisis, saying that, such crises have threatened the polity, politics and socio-economic development of the region.

El-Rufai issued the warning in an address during the emergency meeting of the State Council of Chiefs on Tuesday, stated that, laws impose on community members to bear the cost of repairs of damage arising from crises.

El Rufai mentioned that the various provisions of the Riots Damage Laws of 1958, the Collective Damage Law of 1915 and the Peace Preservation Law of 1917 will henceforth be enforced.

According to him, “these laws impose on communities that permit violence in their midsts, obliging community members to be charged and levied monies for the costs of repairing damage done during episodes of violence.”

The governor promised that his administration will provide details of the enforcement of these extant laws.

El Rufai also warned the Royal Fathers that government will no longer accept excuses from them when crises erupt in their domains.

“In situations of unrests, it is common for traditional rulers to disclaim any control over unruly youths. It is an excuse we can no longer accept. Where significant sections of a community disdain the counsel or authority of their traditional ruler, it imperils the rationale for keeping the traditional institution and the occupant of the office”, he argued.

The governor who traced the genesis of crises in Kaduna state, said that ethno-religious clash first occurred in Kasuwan Magani in 1980, adding that “since them, it appears that a constituency has developed which believes that violence pays, and is convinced that violence has no consequences for the perpetrators. ”

According to him, “it is time for a powerful coalition for peace to speak frankly and support actions against those who menace the right of our citizens to live in peace wherever they choose.”

The governor who vowed to prosecute the perpetrators of the crisis, however lamented the slow pace prosecution in the courts.

He stated that Kaduna State is working to secure the approval of the National Judicial Council in order to expand the bench with 20 additional high court judges.

In addition, El Rufai said that government is working with Kaduna State Police Command to establish a police division in Narayi and Sabon Tasha. He expressed gratitude to the police authorities for agreeing to establish a police division at Kasuwan Magani.

ACF in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, said, “Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is saddened with the spate of communal clashes in some parts of the North and in particular the recent one in Kasuwan Magani village, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State where about 52 people were alleged to have been killed.

“The communal reprisal clash over simple disagreement with its consequent loss of lives and destruction of property is most unfortunate and condemnable. Communities that have lived together peacefully over the years should refrain from such avoidable violent conflicts that in most cases also destroy trust and harmony among communities, which is not helpful.

“Threats to our peace as one united people and a region over the years have affected our peaceful coexistence, unity, polity and socio-economic development. We must therefore, come together and stop this unfortunate and condemnable carnage that does no one any good.

“Reprisal attacks are certainly not the best way to resolve disputes. ACF therefore calls upon the warring communities in Kajuru and in other states to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue in resolving their disagreements. Leaders of the various communities should also play a greater role in ensuring that peace and harmony are restored in the affected areas.

“ACF urges the Security Agencies to swing into action and not only fish out the criminals who perpetrated these dastardly acts, but also ensure that they face the wrath of the law to serve as deterrence to others. The Police and Judiciary should therefore fast track its investigating and prosecuting processes, as justice delayed is justice denied.

“ACF also commends the prompt intervention of the Security Agencies in the Kasuwan Magani crisis and its spill over to other parts of Kaduna and urges them to sustain surveillance in the areas until normalcy is restored.

“ACF equally commends the Kaduna State Government for imposing 24hour curfew in Kaduna and environs to stop further escalation of the crisis. We urge the Government to strengthen its peace building process by engaging the leaders of the affected communities and other stakeholders in finding an endurable peace in the Kaduna State.

“ACF extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones, the Government and people of Kaduna State over this unfortunate incident.

“As human beings, and believers in our two major religions, both of which have peace and good neighbourliness as part of its creeds, we have no reason whatsoever to descend to bestiality, citing reasons of religion or ethnicity, because even our ethnic groups have historically been known to live peacefully with one another…”
