  • Reps probe Kaduna killings

The House Representatives yesterday urged the police to investigate the recurrent crises in Kaduna State and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The resolution of the House comes on the heels of the October 21 attack at Kujama town in Chikun Local Government Area, where 50 persons were reportedly killed.

It also urged security agencies to ensure the release of a paramount ruler of Adara people, who was abducted while returning from the scene of the crisis.

The resolution of the House followed the passage of a motion by Minority Yakubu Barde (PDP, Kaduna), titled: Killings, Abduction and Destruction of Property in Kajuru and Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Moving the motion, the lawmaker chronicled what led to the crises, saying: “It was a tale of an attack in Kasuwa Magani, a weekly market in Kajuru Local Government Area in the state, on October 18 and an allegedly retaliation on October 21 on Kujama town in Chikun Local Government Area by hoodlums.

“The paramount ruler of Adara people was abducted with his wife and driver while returning from the scene of the crisis.”

The House also resolved that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) should provide materials to those affected by the crisis.

  • PDP to APC: search your conscience on Benue, Rivers, Kaduna killings

PDP to APC: search your conscience on Benue, Rivers, Kaduna killings

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to search its conscience on the killings in Benue, Rivers and Kaduna States.

In a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party described the massacre of defenseless Nigerians in the three states as extremely wicked.

It also flayed as inexcusable, the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to act upon early danger signs and threats by taking cautionary measures that could have averted the killings, particularly in Benue State.

The opposition party further lamented what it termed the insensitivity of the APC Presidency, which it said, reacted to the ugly incidents only after the PDP and well-meaning Nigerians called them to task.

The PDP also called on the Presidency to do some soul-searching with regards to its silence and loud indifference whenever citizens fall under such horrifying attacks.

“What a way to start the new year? The sheer insensitivity of the APC Government has continued to cause our nation a lot of pain and sorrow.

“Is it not only a careless and inept leadership like the APC government that will ignore the danger signs in any part of the country and leave its citizens defenseless, just to be massacred by marauders?

“If the APC Federal Government had effectively acted upon the danger signs and had provided adequate security in flash points across the country, particularly in Benue state, north central and Southern Kaduna area, this massacre of Nigerians, who were already impoverished by the APC’s misrule, could have been prevented.

“Is it not a tragic trajectory of governance that while the APC Presidency was busy basking in its orchestrated New Year self-praise and empty promises, bandits were having a field day mowing down citizens in cold blood?

“Is it not also an irony that when the government was prompted to react to the spate of killings, all its officials could do was to respond in manners most indifferent, nearly unconcerned and almost without compassion?

“Indeed, the PDP aligns with Nigerians that the APC and the Presidency should have a serious soul searching on their clear indifference towards the persistent killings and maiming of citizens by bandits who constantly invade communities, slaughter the people and walk away with blood of our compatriots in their hands”.

The party urged the government to show commitment by ensuring that the perpetrators of these killings were brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law.

It also urged the military and other security agencies to leave no stone unturned in the fishing out the perpetrators.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us; every citizen has a right to life and no man should take the life of another for any reason or under any guise whatsoever,” the statement added.

  • How to end Southern Kaduna killings, by El-Rufa’i

How to end Southern Kaduna killings, by El-Rufa’i

KADUNA State Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i has offered a three-step solution to end killings in Southern Kaduna – a Christian-dominated settlement that has been constantly invaded by suspected herdsmen.

The governor said calming frayed nerves, prosecuting culprits and building peace are ways to go in healing injuries precipitated by the renewed crisis, which recently led to the destruction of lives and properties.

El-Rufa’i, who spoke yesterday on Sunrise Daily, a live programme on Channels TV, described the Southern Kaduna killings as a “reprisal” from trans-human pastoralists from outside Nigeria, saying some arrested suspects who participated in the carnage were helping security agencies in investigations.

He said: “We have studied these problems and we think the solution is in three-step. We are very clear in our mind that, that is the way to go. Based on previous experience and the study of the situation on the ground, and based on what Peace and Intelligence experts have told us; the first step is to restore peace and normalcy to the affected Local Government Areas through enhanced security and military deployment…

“The second step is to prosecute all those involved. We have made significant arrest; the police have paraded some of these suspects. Some have not been paraded because we have not got the entire gang… Most of those we have arrested now are local Fulani and the Southern Kaduna people, because they were also blocking highways and killing innocent people. We have both (groups) in custody… and we are getting closer to arresting the masterminds.

“The third step is the peace building. We need to bring the communities together, because no matter how many policemen and armed forces you put in a place like Southern Kaduna, which has scattered communities, there would be no peace unless people agree to live in peace.”

El-Rufa’i said there are people directly living of the crisis, accusing political and religious leaders for making gains out of the killings.

He said: “There people, believe it or not, that have been living of this (crisis). Subsequent events and prosecutions would reveal this. As I speak, we are aware of some church leaders that have been getting money from abroad to bury Christians that have killed and to re-build thousands of churches that are being destroyed. Because, the more they put these pictures on social media and give the impression that Christians are being targeted, the more the funds flow in.”

The governor cautioned political and church leaders in Southern Kaduna sending a “narrative of exclusion” to desist from making divisive statement.

He said: “There are political and church leaders in Southern Kaduna sending a narrative of exclusion that, only indigenes should live in that part; that only people of particular religion should live there. Unless people agree to live in peace, we will not have peace.

“No peace is possible without justice and foundations of law enforcement. What we have seen in Southern Kaduna is a result of impunity. People came and destroy property for 37 years and no one has ever been prosecuted.”

On the allegation that some traditional rulers and local government chairmen might be part of the problem, he said: “We are working closely with traditional rulers, but I want to tell you that some of them are part of the problems. We are prosecuting some of them. There was a case of policemen who went to Nasarawa State for an investigation. On coming back, they met a checkpoint manned by Southern Kaduna youths who killed four policemen and took their rifles. When the police investigated the matter, a traditional ruler handed over the rifles to police investigators. And we said, where are those people that gave him the riffles? Those are the killers. The traditional ruler refused. We are charging him for murder.”

  • Religion and the Southern Kaduna killings

HOW that tentative inventory of the killings has revealed that over 800 human souls have been wasted, it is important to ask the question: What could be the cause of the killings? How can an area that is the host of the famous Nok Civilisation, suddenly become the amphitheatre  of barbarism and incivility?

But since we have now come to the rather dubious and unempirical conclusion that religion is at the root of the matter, it is important to look at the issues very closely.

For students of religion and society whose eyes have been on Southern Kaduna in the last few years, since the unfortunate health challenges that took His Lordship Most Rev. Joseph Bagobiri out of the shores of this country, with the exception of Rev. Ibrahim Yakubu and the regular outspoken voice of the Chaplain of the Catholic Social Forum of Kafachan Diocese, Rev. Fr. Alexander Yayock, no other voice rang in condemnation of the killings. At least, publicly. And it is simple to know why: the clerics are either unaware of their prophetic social responsibility or they are out of touch with history books.

Are our holy books not replete with stories of confrontation between prophets and the rulers of their time much of which was on how society was to be governed for the realisation of the common good aimed at maximising opportunities to ensure the greatest good for the greatest number?

Even in contemporary times, there are many clerics who abandoned the comfort of their presbyteries to identify with, and also to speak in defence of the common good. In the 1970s, we heard of Bishop Juan Gardi of Guatemala who was an outspoken critic of military rule.

In the Philippines, the role Cardinal Sin played in ensuring local and international pressure in forcing Ferdinand Marcos to eventually flee the country needs no repeating.

The most obvious example of the role of the clergy in bringing about a just society is probably that of Desmond Tutu during apartheid in South Africa. In recognition of the role he played, Tutu was, in 1984, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, made the Chairman of the famous South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Here at home, there are names such as Cardinal Okogie, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Gumi, Bishop Kukah, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, Bishop Joseph Bagobiri, Sunday Mbang, etc, who are known for speaking truth to power irrespective of whose ox is gored. In the electioneering leading to the emergence of General Buhari as president, for instance, Gumi boldly came out to ask the General to drop his ambition arguing that being ‘God-fearing’ is not enough qualification to make one a good leader. The result was the intimidation of the Gumis again and again by those thought they could cry more than the bereaved.

But Sheikh Gumi is not alone. Apart from the Sultan who recently called on Governor Nasiru El’Rufa’i to punish criminals in the ongoing killings whatever name or religion they answer to, I was recently shocked to discover that contrary to what we think, there are Islamic scholars who are of the opinion that “The state must ensure that the equality of all citizens before the law, which is itself part of the common good of society, should never be impaired either openly or covertly for religious reasons, and that there should be no discrimination against any of them.”

It is this category of scholars who have continued to give fresh impetus for theological thought unlike others with doctorate degrees from Cairo, Tunis, Ankara, and sometimes from Europe; yet, they remain all the same wedded to the theological thoughts of 1804 and the Jahiliyya period. Their activities have continued to give the noble religion of Islam a bad image. With their education, they subscribe to bigotry. And when in power, they create tension by importing subjects such as Sharia, Islamisation, jihad etc not because they are good Muslims but largely in times of legitimacy crisis.

They transmit heresy among our large army of gullible people contrary to progressive contemporary Islamic scholars who are convinced that God really wills only freely-willed obedience. The Egyptian scholar Husayn Fauzi, for instance, believes that “Islam can no longer be spread by command and compulsion, but only through influencing public opinion, e.g., by way of education and by winning consent for the principles which one holds oneself to be truly Islamic and essentially for genuine Islamic living and thinking.”

What all this means is that: One, there are many from the other side of the divide who share our dreams and ideals. They believe in the common good of society and are ever disposed to make sacrifices in defence of democracy, the dignity of human life, freedom of religion, among other values. They are our friends not our enemies. We must be ready to collaborate with them to create a good society that reflects the ideals of the one true God we all worship.

Two, in moments like this, we must be ready to reject the heresies of some so-called religious leaders whose stock-in-trade is conspiracy. Rather than rising up to their social responsibilities like their predecessors, they settled for the blame game while pointing accusing fingers at those who do not belong to their camps as the culprits. This category of leaders is a nuisance to both society and the Kingdom of God.

Three, stakeholders are agreed that the handling of the killings by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasiru El’Rufa’I, leaves much to be desired. The essence of democracy, unlike dictocracy, is participation. A situation where only the decisions of one mortal matters is unacceptable. He must develop the capacity to listen and to integrate the ideas of others.

Four, Muslims in Northern Nigeria must rise up to defend the noble image of their religion that some politicians and selfish figures are dragging to the field for their games. It is the antics of these selfish elements that have made Islam in the region to look different from Islam as say, practiced by the Yorubas. To say the least, Northern Islam has continued to see others not as brethren-in-creation but as infidels.

Finally, to paraphrase a Jesuit scholar, Christian W. Troll, The believers of every succeeding age therefore must ask themselves not only: What do the wordings of the Koranic or Biblical injunctions command or prohibit here. But also: How does God ultimately want our social conditions – and hence also the laws, which regulate them – to be ordered in accordance with the higher ethical norms, enunciated in the Koran or the Bible?

And since the victims of this insecurity are the Christians, the Muslims, those Fulanis who knew our fathers, etc, they must also act beyond insularity by striking a common course with all these to defend our land against the threats of criminals whatever name or religion they answer to.

  • PDP knocks Presidency over comments on Kaduna killings

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned in totality the statement credited to the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, saying the killings in Southern Kaduna were partly the fault of the PDP because it is the only Senatorial District in the North West with PDP senator.

Shehu spoke during a live programme on Channels Television Monday.

In a reaction by the PDP spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party described the statement as sad, baffling and shameful.

The statement said, “We are baffled that such a callous, irresponsible and insensitive statement could come from a person who speaks for the President of Nigeria.

“This shows the extent to which every issue in the country today is viewed from the APC’s and the Presidency’s extremely narrow and jaundiced partisan political prism.

“Is Garba Shehu inferring that the hapless people of southern Kaduna were singled out for genocide because they elected a PDP senator?

“Or that the people invited such mindless violence upon themselves by choosing to be different in a sea of APC domination?

“Or is the Southern Kaduna massacre really an action to teach the people a bitter lesson for voting PDP and not APC? It is really unimaginable that any reasonable person can make such a reckless statement.

“One really wonders when the APC would finally accept responsibility for its incompetence and maladministration and end the blame game.

“They have spent the last two years doing nothing but blame the PDP for their woes. They will from all indications, spend the next two years doing the same.”

  • PFN seeks end to Southern Kaduna killings

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has called on the federal government to immediately put a stop to the killings in Southern Kaduna.

It said it was shameful that the killings were still ongoing despite the deployment of troops and aerial surveillance by military authorities.

PFN’s National President, Dr Felix Omobude, told reporters last Thursday in Lagos that government must stop at nothing to halt the killings immediately.

According to him: “Why are the killers invincible and evasive? We are concerned government agencies didn’t act as swiftly as they should.

“Government must bring peace to Southern Kaduna by all means. Those found culpable of the senseless killings must be bought to book.”

The body also lamented the massive poverty and hunger in the land.

Omobude said the “average take-home of the average Nigerian has been technically reduced to half or less than half. This is unacceptable and government must reverse the trend.”

On the Rann accidental bombing, the body asked Nigerians to show understanding over the unfortunate incident, saying the Armed Forces should not be condemned for the accident.

It commended the fight against Boko Haram, saying the rising Fulani herdsmen attacks must also be given prompt attention.

Much as he discouraged the idea of fighting back, Omobude said Christians should not hesitate to defend themselves against aggressors if they have the means.

According to him: “There is no law in the bible or constitution that forbids self-defence.

“If you have the wherewithal to defend yourself, of course do by all means especially if government has failed to defend you.”

He admitted there were bad eggs in the fold but stated that the body has begun the process of registering approved churches.

“It might take a while but we will do it to put our house in order,” Omobude assured.

  • Rivers, Yobe CAN protest Kaduna killings

Rivers, Yobe CAN protest Kaduna killings

    •Black Sunday declared in Rivers

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Rivers State has protested the Southern Kaduna killings. It declared yesterday a black Sunday.

By 2pm yesterday, Christians gathered at Christ Church in Port Harcourt City council, where they moved to the Government House, singing and praying.

The protesters turned the Government House to a prayer centre while waiting to be received.

About 30 minutes later, they were received by Governor Nyesom Wike’s Chief of Staff, Emeka Woke.

According to CAN Chairman, Primate Isaac Anyanasikike, the killing of innocent Christians in Southern Kaduna informed their coming together to observe a “Black Sunday” and let the world know that never again shall politics be played with the blood and property of fellow compatriots.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to confront what he described as “the hydra-headed monster” of Islamic Jihadists and bring the “satanic assignees to justice”.

The CAN chairman urged the Federal Government to begin the process of reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation and to pay full compensation to victims.

His words: “We have declared today a black Sunday, and a national day of mourning occasioned by unending spate of sectarian killing in Southern Kaduna and other parts of our country bound in freedom, peace and unity.

“The horror perpetrated by the radical Islamic Jihadists, which gave birth to this Black Sunday is more than culpable homicide. It is both genocide and a holocaust. We write to Mr. President with passion because we are aware that you were, and still a soldier, who knows what defending a defenceless people, is.

“We believe that by sending our protest letter through Governor Nyesom Wike, it will get to the President. It is our fervent prayer that God will strengthen and encourage our Christian brethren in Southern Kaduna and other parts of the country.”

Woke thanked the protesters for their peaceful disposition and promised that Wike will receive their letter and communicate with Mr. President.

The Yobe State chapter has condemned the crisis in Southern Kaduna.

Chairman Rev. Jibrin Joshua, in a news conference yesterday, called on the Federal and Kaduna State governments to find ways to end the killings. He called for justice, equity and fairness in handling the crisis.

The statement reads: “Such killings and destruction of houses, churches and farmlands are unacceptable and, therefore, condemnable.

“No individual or group of persons, disguising as Fulani herdsmen, are permitted to take the law into their hands. So, we call on both the federal and the state government to investigate and ensure that those behind the killings are brought to book.

“Concerned authorities should also redouble their efforts in ending these killings and ensure that those affected are adequately compensated” Rev Jibrin said.

The cleric commiserated with families who lost loved ones and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

He called on the state government and other northern states to allow the teaching of Christian Religious Knowledge in schools, which had not been in practice before now

  • President’s silence on Kaduna killings unacceptable, says CAN

President’s silence on Kaduna killings unacceptable, says CAN

The National leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday expressed sadness over the manner the federal and state governments are handling the killings in Southern Kaduna.

CAN described President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence over the ongoing killings as sad and unacceptable.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on the continued killings, CAN’s National General Secretary, Rev. Musa Asake, said although the church in Nigeria has since 2009 been subjected to systemic genocide and “persecution through the instrumentality of Islamic fundamentalists, Boko Haram, leading to the killing of thousands of Christians and destruction of hundreds of churches and over 50,000 houses, the current unprecedented onslaught against Christians in Southern Kaduna by Islamic fundamentalists disguising as Fulani herdsmen under the watch of Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and President Muhammadu Buhari has reached an alarming stage.”

The continuous killings, Asake said, have shown that the governor of Kaduna State “lacks the will power to arrest the situation and bring it under effective control.

“We know that Southern Kaduna has been under 24-hour curfew daily as directed by the governor, yet the enemies of the people are still prowling, going from house to house killing defenceless people without government protection.”

CAN, he said, has declared January 8, 2017 as national day of mourning by Christians, including those in the Diaspora, adding that all Christians are to dress in mourning attire of black clothes or dresses in all church services.

His words: “I have been directed by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo A. Ayokunle, to bring to your attention the ongoing ethnic/religious cleansing of Nigerian Christians in general and those of Southern Kaduna in particular in the last few weeks.

“While we commend President Muhammadu Buhari for waging war against Boko Haram fundamentalists since his assumption of office, his silence over the ongoing genocide in the last few weeks speaks volume of the perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts.

“The recent defence of the President’s silence that the President has received briefing from the governor of Kaduna State over the matter is unacceptable, because the Presidency knows that the people of the affected area had already protested against the governor’s unacceptable biased handling of the continuous killings.

“Common sense tells anyone that at that instance, the President has to more directly wade in because lives are involved.

“The security operatives in the area appear to be turning blind eyes to the killings.

“They only rush to trouble spots after the perpetrators of the evils had performed their enterprise of killings and destruction of houses and farmlands.

“CAN has previously drawn attention to the imbalance in the appointments made in our security institutions, hence we re-emphasise that leadership/management of security institutions both at the national and state levels be reviewed to ensure a balance of Muslim and Christian representation.

“Such balance will build trust and confidence among all citizens of Nigeria in the security empowered to protect our nation.

“We implore the state and federal governments to increase their efforts in putting an end to these killings and as well ensure that those behind the killings are brought to book under the laws of our land and those affected are compensated.

“In view of the present predicament, the President of CAN has directed that Sunday January 8, 2017 should be declared national day of mourning by Christians, including those in Diaspora.

“We are to pray fervently for our Southern Kaduna brothers and sisters who are victims of these wanton killings and also for the peace of our dear country Nigeria.

“Therefore, all Christians are to dress in mourning attire of black clothes or dresses in all our church services on January 8, 2017.

“We are to pray that God who delivered the Jews from Haman should deliver Christians from Hamans in Nigeria.

“Not only that, all celebrations/merriments associated with the New Year are to be done low key in solidarity with our brethren in Southern Kaduna who had lost their lives and who have been denied the privilege of celebrating the Yuletide.

“An injustice to one is an injustice to all.

“Each State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria should also address the press on the 1st or 8th of January, reading out the contents of this release.

“May God deliver our land from the forces of darkness on the rampage in Jesus’ name.

“All Christians in Nigeria and on the global scene should speak against this ethnic/religious cleansing to wake up the Nigerian security agencies from their deliberate slumber to carry out their responsibilities”.

  • El-Rufai, security chiefs meet over Kaduna killings

El-Rufai, security chiefs meet over Kaduna killings

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and security chiefs yesterday visited Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area,to commiserate with the traditional rulers and victims of the destruction which followed Monday’s protest.
The team visited the Emir of Jema’a, Alhaji Muhammadu Isah Muhammadu, Chief of Kagoro, Ufoi Bonet and Chief of Marwa, Tagwai Sambo. The governor appealed to aggrieved parties to sheath their sword and embrace peace.
According to El-Rufai, there was no need for reprisal attacks since the government was working to put necessary security measures in place to protect lives and maintain law and order.
“I and the Deputy Governor took the oath of office to protect lives and property of the citizens, and we are committed to ensuring this is achieved.
“Traditional rulers should please talk to their subjects against taking vengeance each time there is a problem,” El-Rufai said.
The governor, however, lauded Alhaji Muhammadu for stopping his subjects from fighting when crisis erupted during the rally, which according to him, left the government with no option than to impose a 24-hour curfew on Kafanchan.
El-Rufai also enjoined the leaders, irrespective of background, to support the peace process, calm the people and remind them that the government is taking proactive measures to stop the killings and restore peace in Southern Kaduna.
The governor further appealed: “Please if there is any suspicious movement or information about impending attacks, report immediately or send me a text message and we would take steps to contain it.”
In their separate remarks, the Emir of Jema’a, Chief of Kagoro and Chief of Moroa lauded El-Rufai for his commitment and the government’s resolve to restore peace to Southern Kaduna.
They assured the governor of their commitment to ensure peace reigns in their chiefdoms.
