Seven-year-old rescued from abusive father in Kaduna

Kaduna State Ministry of Human Services and Social Development has rescued a seven-years-old boy, Abubakar Sani, from his abusive father in Lere Local Government Area.

The boy’s two legs, our correspondent reports, were tied up by his father who poured hot water on them for allegedly stealing biscuits.

Commissioner in the ministry, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, told reporters when she visited the victim, who is recuperating at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital  that after medical examination, the only option to save the boy’s life was to amputate his legs.

According to her, “The boy’s report came to the ministry about nine days ago and by then, his legs had already rotted and had maggots coming out. So, the advice from the doctors was amputation to save his life.

“It is so disheartening knowing the pain and trauma the child must have passed through and as if that was not enough, the father with the help of his wife, the boy’s stepmother, locked him up in a room for over 20 days in that condition without proper food.”

She added  that the police had apprehended the father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, and his wife.

She said they would be charged to court after investigation.

She reiterated that the state government’s Child Protection Law is aimed at defending the rights of children because the social well-being of the child is the state’s paramount goal.

She emphasised that the state has zero tolerance for child molestation, domestic violence, rape and abuse of all sought on women and children is not taken lightly in the state adding: “We will make sure that justice is served to serve as a deterrent to others. I also want to warn parents that they do not have the right to cause such harm to their children as the government also has rights over that child.”

Chief Medical Director, Barau Dikko Teaching hospital, Kaduna State University, Dr. Abdulkadir Musa, said with the amputation, the boy would be crippled for life.

He said in future, perhaps the only thing that could be done to ease his survival is by equipping him with artificial limbs.

He counselled parents to know their limits when punishing their children and advised them to exercise caution and perseverance to avoid irreversible consequences.

Army Chief commissions 170 flats, new school for troops in Kaduna

As part of efforts to enhance the welfare of troops, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, on Friday, commissioned 170 flats for soldiers at the Jaji Military Cantonment in Kaduna State.

In addition to the residential accommodation, he also inaugurated a newly built Infantry Model Command Day Secondary School to bridge the gap in secondary education within the cantonment and surrounding areas.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Lt. Gen. Oluyede stated that he initiated both projects during his tenure as Infantry Corps Commander after identifying critical shortages in troop housing and the quality of secondary education available to children in the area.

He said: “As the Chief of Army Staff, I have embraced the same ethos in my quest for the best, in terms of welfare for our soldiers nationwide.

“The Infantry Model Command Day Secondary School we just commissioned is indeed a beautiful edifice and it will also be staffed with the best of teachers and other administrative staff. The goal is to give our children the best education and place them in a favourable position to compete with their contemporaries in public and private schools both at home and abroad.

“This laudable initiative will not end here in Jaji. Similar initiatives will be replicated nationwide in identified areas of need. As I speak, the final equipping of the newly constructed Command Children School in Daura Katsina is ongoing while renovation works are being carried out in similar institutions nationwide.

“These are all part of my grand plan for the improved welfare of our troops and their families. This is because I recognise that the standard of welfare of our personnel and their families is crucial to our Force Readiness and this informed the “Soldier First Culture” as one of the strategic objectives of my Command Philosophy.

“In that wise, the commissioning of these 17 blocks of accommodation today will indeed go a long way in providing the much-needed relief in the Jaji community. However, I urge all the beneficiaries to take proper care of these spaces and will continue to do more to give our soldiers a befitting quality of life in the barracks.

“I am sure you all are aware that the Nigerian Army under my watch is also focusing on the post-service housing needs of our personnel by rapidly expanding the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers program otherwise known as AHOOAS. All soldiers of the Nigerian Army should therefore be rest assured that under my leadership, their welfare will be my priority,” COAS said.

In his welcome address, the Commander Infantry Corps, Major General Abdulkhalifa Ibrahim said, the commissioning ceremony marks a significant milestone in their commitment to enhancing the welfare of personnel and their families and also reflects the unwavering dedication of the Nigerian Army leadership to build upon the achievements of the predecessors.

“The focus of our Chief of Army Staff Command Philosophy is clear: to consolidate the successes of past leaders and to bequeath a well-motivated and combat-ready force that is capable of fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.

“Central to this vision is the recognition that the welfare of our soldiers and their families is paramount. It is this philosophy that has driven the conception and execution of vital projects that are aimed at addressing the pressing needs of our troops.

“Today, we celebrate the completion of the first phase of 17 blocks of 10 flats at the newly renamed Lt Gen OO Oluyede Barracks in Old Kafanchan Barracks. This initiative directly addresses the accommodation challenges faced by our soldiers and their families, providing them with a secure and comfortable living environment,” the Commander said.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello has emphasized the State’s commitment to balancing technological advancements with human engagement and autonomy in educational settings.

He stated this on Monday at the official commemoration of this year’s International Day of Education with a focus on “AI and Education: Protecting Human Agency During a Wave of Automation”.

Professor Bello stated that the Kaduna State government has made significant strides in integrating Artificial Intelligence technologies into the education sector, earning an award as the second runner-up on ICT Human Capital Development at the 12th National Council on Communication and Digital Economy in 2024.

He said the initiatives include the procurement and distribution of computers, provision of internet connectivity, stable power supply through solar energy, creation of simulations for teaching and learning, and training teachers to leverage AI technologies.

“These efforts aim to improve access to quality education, enhance learning outcomes, and equip students and teachers with the tools needed to thrive in an increasingly automated world.

“The state government recognizes the potential benefits of AI in education, including improved learning outcomes, enhanced critical thinking and analytical skills, and better preparation for the future workforce”, he said.

He, however, added that the government acknowledges the risks associated with AI, including job displacement and the potential decline of human agency.

“To mitigate these risks, the state government emphasizes the need for a thoughtful and ethical approach to AI integration, ensuring that AI complements rather than replaces human involvement in education”, he said.

The successful commemoration of the International Day of Education was made possible through collaborations with esteemed partners, including ROOSCP, AGILE, PLANE, UNICEF, and SCI.

“The state government expresses gratitude for the contributions of various stakeholders and reaffirms its commitment to prioritizing policies that balance innovation with human development”, the Commissioner stressed.
